are there any free IM's for yahoo messager that will alert you when you get an instant message?
mmmmm Instant massages.
Did you try Fring?
I am using Palringo. It's free and does some nice things, can quickly capture and send a picture (url to it), send voice files.
It also supports Google Talk, Hotmail (i think?).
goto beejive.com and try jivetalk. its a little buggy alpha but still pretty good.
the best one is Agile. it does all the messaging services, it has been around a LONG time, no bugs, very trimmed down but supports video, voice, and it's free...here's a link: http://www.agilemobile.com/

i must have downloaded an already regg'ed CAB file then, cause ive used mine for over 2 months.
#10, thanks for the info on Slick. I've been using it for a few days and I like it.
Best of all, for me at least, it supports custom status messages and "Idle" time on Yahoo.
Thanks again, I didn't come across it when I was searching for IM clients.
Id use slick but it has problems with away messages and does not play nice with clients such as trillian or pidgin. People dont receive your messages at all. IM+ seems to be the best solution. I tried jivetalk it crashed too much. Palringo was okay but did not support tabbed ims . My only gripe with IM+ is the screen flashes as you hit enter during typing. Almost like flickering. Slick or the others didnt do that.
But IM+ feature wise is very good, and has a today plugin for listing new received ims.
IM+ .Parlingo. Both very good programs.

my one gripe with IM+ is that when the person you are talking to is using the "official" AIM client it will randomly lock up when they send you a messege
i love that i can do voice chat over agile. it rocks. glad i downloaded a free version on accident, lol. works like a charm.

I've been using slick 0.38. I can explain to you how to uninstall .42 and install .38(it involves a reg edit). PM me if you want, or someone reply here if there's enough interest and I'll write up a quick doc for it.
On a more serious note. I am using Fring. But memory consumption is a problem.
Does anybody out there know if there is a way for you to be offline, and shown in your buddies contact list but in away mode, and then when they send you a message maybe it pops up a message on their contact list saying that you are currently away but if they would like to page you that the program would call your phone with an sms message to jump online and log into your IM program?
Confused yet? Me too.

I have uninstalled Fring and am now using Palringo. Much happier. The memory footprint is way smaller. I like the threaded messages and the ability to send recorded voice messages and photos thru IM. I dont use Skype so Fring is just more program than I need.

Thought I would start this thread to identify the best IM for WM5.0 or Wizard. We are looking for a universal IM that connects to MSN, ICQ, AOL and Yahoo.
I have Agile Messenger but it seems to disconnect all the time while in a call or just randomly. Not to reliable. My wife has the sidekick and the IM is flawless.
What do you use and recommend?
Agile Messenger
Pro:
Nice interface that allows you to see all contacts from different services
You can pull ICQ info so you can see who are ebhind those numbers
Separate tabs for each IM window
Alerts when an IM appears
Con:
Connection drops when on call
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects)
The application will randomly close
I use Agile
About the cons:
Connection drops when on call (It uses GPRS/EDGE, which is the same part of the phone that makes/takes calls. The only other way is to use text messages, and that is costly)
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects) (I've never had that happen to me)
The application will randomly close (I've never had that happen to me)
Does anybody use the AIM that comes setup on the MDA? If not, why not? I don't use anything other than AIM, and the one that came with the phone seems to work fine (although I've only had it for a day now).
From what I've heard, the OZ messenger app which comes installed on tmobile mda uses sms to chat. this means you pay for each sms message unless you have unlimitted sms plan. also, i've found it to be painfully slow.
I think agile is great, especially the WM5 alpha build. agile must disconnect during a call because GPRS/EDGE and voice cannot be used at the same time. I also had random disonnects before I updated to the qtek AKU2 rom. Now that i have updated, agile works flawlessly.
the oz communicator does not use sms. i dont know why people start these nasty rumors. the problem i have with oz is that it constantly occupies the notification slot telling you that you ar available. the led will always blink orange when it is on. and i actually caught it disconnected with the available icon still in the notification tray.
if they fixed the notification to only when you get a new message then i would probably use it.
my agile closes its self too.

OZ absolutely does use SMS. I have performed tests on this where the ONLY use that could have been made of the SMS was the OZ client, and the counter got hit for EVERY message.
That's not a "nasty rumor" - its a FACT.
I totally agree that OZ uses SMS. I don't have unlimited SMS, so I never use it. After testing OZ, I suddenly had 45 text messages on my bill. Coincidence? NO! Like I said, I never use SMS, so it certainly was OZ that was using SMS to transmit those IMs back and forth.

I agree, we don't use unlimited SMS either, OZ is definitely SMS-based.

Yes of course. WiFi or GPRS connections will enable you to use any instant messaging program that doesn't use text as a way to "IM."

I don't know of any good IRC client as I do not use any but this one has very good reviews on every site I see it on (And magazine reviews) http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=5713

If you use Agile Messener, or the new Windows Live Mobile, you WILL NOT be charged using text messages. the AOL program (and the protocol, in my opinion) is retarded in it's method of message delivery. The two programs I have mentioned above, send IMs using your data tariff ONLY, unless you are connected to a WiFi access point, in which case, IMs will be sent over that network, rather than the mobile one.
Hope this has re-assured you...

I have been using this program for about 3 days now and I must say that it is pretty good. You really have to follow the setup to get it right. I did not select to do the transcribe feature but I am thinking about it now that I like the Visual Voice mail side of the program.
My only downside now is the program is not giving me a notification that I have new emails. They say it is supposed to work......but! The way I overcame this is that on the setup screen, I have notification set to send me a email to let me know. This is a work around but still a great app.
Anyone else using this..........if so let me know what you think and how it is working for you.
CallWave does this too...
...and it is free.
i saw this on boygenius.com. but i also read that the .cab file is only for the smartphone and not for pocket pc.

Been trying to sign up for callwave but it doesn't recognize my phone number format and I'm in Canada.
How should it be written?
as for simulscribe, yes make sure u follow instructions or it wont work
I tried callwave.....it seems pretty good, but there is not a program for the PPC that will allow you to see each voicemail that you have. It does send to your email. If you have push email turned on, it is ok. SimulScribe still seems to be a little further in with its PPC Visual Voice Mail. Maybe someone will come out with something better quick!

You mention you were having problems with email notifications. Does this work with your email, or is it a standalone app (there's not too much info on the simulsays website). Also, the website mentions it's compatible with a few Blackberry devices and Windows Mobile Smartphones (not Pocket PC's). You didn't have any problems installing it?
It is a .cab file that you download. After you do setup on their site and download the cab file, it will update itself with a new .cab. The second .cab is for PPC not smartphone. I have no trouble with anything but it's internal notification. As a side note you can setup a notification via email and this works great. I just hate having to apply this fix! Anyone out there without this problem.

You can get your voicemails transcribed and sent to you via email or text message. You have to pay for this feature.
Tomcat - have you noticed any extra battery drain using this app? I'm wondering if it works sort of like push email, where it's constantly checking if you have new voicemail, or if it only works when you actually get a new voicemail.
I'm removing this. My phone doesn't alert me when I have a voice message. I have to go to the program to check. Also the voice mail volume is really really low.
This looked quite cool, but it seems to require a monthly fee for the service (which is fine, but I wouldn't use it enough to make it worthwhile).
However, I am wondering something now....
I have a wizard and it was said that a wizard is not capable of accessing the audio for the phone, but I see that you can "record" calls on a Hermes. I'd guess this is limited to you recording your side, but if you could record/monitor the incoming signal and I have free voicemail, would it be possible to transcribe messages on the phone when the program is activated by an incoming voicemail notification?
Ahhh pipe dreams...

While neither of these apps are just Google Talk, they both work well with it. I have been using Slick for several months without any problems, and recently started using OZ IM. Both work great with gtalk.

You can use a couple different google voice dialers to pull your contact info from google voice, and you can send and reply to SMS messages through outlook. That's what I do

What is a good ad free text messaging app? I used to run MIUI and LOVE their texting ap. But MIUI isn't working right for me now so switched to CM11. And while I like it the lack of a good text messenger sucks.
I send lots of MMS messages because of work, and I have 3 different gmail accounts logged in on my phone, and while hangouts is boarderline ok, the fact that I get sign in issues because of the two accounts I don't use hangouts with and then the fact that I have to select what account to send the mms over, it's just a pain, and not nearly as smooth as I think it should be, or that it was.
I have tried and tried to find the APK for the MIUI texting ap so I could just install that, but I just can't find it.
Please help me find a suitable replacement. I don't mind paying the few bucks for it, but it has to be worth it without being all bloat ware, I don't care if it has 9999 different emoticons. I just want to be able to text and send good resolution MMS.
Thanks,
PS, being able to schedule text messages would be awesome too.

If you're a Uber-texter,
Sliding Messsaging Pro:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.messaging_donate
Evolve is okay, But it's essentially a pared down version of Sliding Messagin Pro (even made by the same people)--except for the funky UI. It looks nice, but it's wonky to use:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.evolve_sms
Handcent is another beloved SMS app…It's been around for eons and is a favorite around here. It's got every feature a bacon-loving man could ever want…but it's butt ugly:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Go SMS Pro -- Essentially on par with handcent. But it has a downside. Even though it's one of the most customizable of the bunch….it takes hours to configure, and even then, just like GO Keyboard, it loves to place big buttons in places you don't want them, and it hides obscure details and features deep within the config and settings….which means that you'll find random numbers and other metadata in your inbox, not really understand what they mean, and then you'll spend the next 20-30 mins trying to figure out how to get rid of them. While this is probably the most-heavily-themed of the bunch, the themes are almost universally garbage. They're unpolished-- the whole lot of them. It's nearly impossible to find a theme that actually skins/themes absolutely everything. Dev's choice of colors, graphics, design is questionable at best. Lastly, the GO Dev team's relentless drive towards integration means that any day now, your app will update and you'll suddenly find out that your SMS app is now your dialer, your lock screen, your camera app, and your flashlight app. Oh…and they'll want you to pay for the "prime" version of every one of those apps-- with GETJAR Gold.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
Other options:
Hangouts now integrates SMS into your Hangouts inbox.
ATT Messaging App-- will integrate voicemail, SMS, MMS, and a few other things like account notifications into a single box for you…which is really, really nice…but the app is also really, really ugly.
There are also apps like SMS Popup which will give you the chance to respond to an incoming message via a notification action or popup.
Lastly, you can just find a AOSP SMS app, configure it, and then theme it with XPosed's XTheme.
Good luck.
