After seeing an official Android 2.0/2.1 update being released for the T-Mobile G1 discussed here and here, I haven't see anything else about it. Does anyone know if this will still happen, or are Dream/Magic users out of luck when it comes to anything beyond 1.6?
They can say they're official all they want, but it's not official until TMo says it officially. Nobody really knows at this point. . . just a ton of speculation.
Has nothing to do with tmobile.
Has to do with HTC.
It doesn't matter if tmobile wants it or not -- if HTC doesn't produce it, it doesn't happen.
Note: tmobile can even REFUSE it, but that doesnt mean that any of *us* are out of luck since HTC [is supposed to] support ADP1 directly -- tmobile has nothing to do with this AT ALL.
Ok, thanks for the responses. I asked because I really want something new. With Android 2.0 and 2.1 being out, and with other phones having the awesome Sense interface, a phone with Donut and without Sense is downright boring to me. If no official 2.0/2.1 ROM will be released for the Dream, I may take the plunge to root and switch to the CM ROM. I'd rather have an official 2.0 though!

tmobile has to request the update from google. In the end t mobile gets to decide if we get the upgrade, if old gen phones keep gettin updated then no one will buy new phones.
Well the Roger's Magic is getting 2.1 with Sense. They said, however, that their G1's will not get the update due to certain limitations on the device. So those with other carriers, like T-Mobile might not get it either...
http://androidandme.com/2010/01/pho...s-android-software-updates-for-select-phones/
Makes me wonder if the MT3G might not get the update either due to it being a 32B and not a 32A like the Roger's or other 32A phones.

They claim that they can't upgrade past 1.FIVE due to hardware limitations... well gee, everybody else everywhere already has 1.6.

Google has NOTHING to do with it. Google does NOT have the required source. HTC has the required source. HTC supports ADP1 directly. If HTC is unwilling, then nothing happens. If HTC chooses to build the necessary binaries, then we're good as gold. Tmobile can ask until they're blue in the face. It is still ENTIRELY UP TO HTC.
I'm new to Android and Android modding, so can I get some advice as to where to go from here? I've flashed phones before (most recently my SE TM506 to the generic SE firmware), but that was extremely simple by comparison.
I feel that a G1 user with stock T-Mobile OTA Donut is really getting left behind, so I'd like to try something newer. I would love 2.1 and HTC Sense, but that doesn't seem likely, and an official 2.0/2.1 OTA ROM seems less and less likely as well. CyanogenMod is an obvious choice, but the upgrade procedure is very intimidating to me, and I also hear a lot of conflicts/bugs that people experience with that ROM.
What should someone that's new to Android modding do to keep getting the most out of their Dream?

Well, the Cupcake release looks great as it adds loads of new features and bug fixes!
I was just wondering how one would install it on the G1? And when we would we be able to do so?
Hi, thanks for your reply in my thread btw I have read that it will be OTA (over the air i think)? So should be wireless and automatic, but then again I only found that out by one website 10 minutes ago
where did you find out info on the cupcake upgrade, cuz I never heard of it yet and would like to know more.
Googling it isnt so hard is it?
This one is nice..

You can either
1. (For those running RC30 stock) you will be notified that an update is available and a reboot is required. Just hit reboot and you will phone will install the update and come back up on its own.
2. (for those with root or RC30 stock) download the update package from Google, rename it to update.zip and put it on your sdcard. Turn off your phone and turn it back on again holding power + home. You will eventually see a picture of a phone with a exclamation point. open the keyboard and hit alt+L and then alt+s. The update will be applied and then you will be prompted to hit home+back to restart.

Discussion about Cupcake....G1 involved
And here I thought it was a given.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/30/cupcake-confirmed-for-t-mobile-g1/
Wow. If T-Mobile are going to refuse to give us Android updates later, even though the G1 will be capable of handling all of them for a long time to come (maybe because they want us to upgrade to a new phone), then I've lost all hope for the Android platform altogether.
Who knows what T-Mobile could do out of greed? When the G2 comes out, perhaps they will force us to get that in order to get the latest Android updates... But if HTC isn't even 100% sure that the G1 will get Cupcake unofficially, then I'm suspecting something sour on T-Mobile's end.
Say the G1 post RC30 never gets a proper jailbreak exploit. G1 users may all be stuck on some outdated update.

well, you have to understand that T-Mobile and Google need to work to ensure that the everyday customer will benefit from this update. Yes the new functionality is great but if there are security problems with it, it wont be logical to deploy to thousands upon thousands of customers. Look at the bigger picture. If you want complete control over your device and want to use cupcake everyday, the DevPhone is your option. only 10% of g1 users are devs.

There's the Dev Phone argument again. There's two problems with the dev phone:
1. G1 Early adopters (I'm in this camp)
2. No cheaper option with a contract
HTC is implying they aren't 100% sure if Cupcake will ever come to the G1. This, I think, is pretty dangerous thinking.
Well basically Google developes the updates then gives them to Tmobile. Then Tmobile decides if it meets their standards then they release it. Its not official till Tmobile says they are going to push it out. I doubt Tmobile wouldn't release it but they never officially release Winmo 6.1 but you can still get it.

You can only do that if you have a "jailbroken" phone (pardon the vocabulary). And that's just not possible with the official RC30 now.

yes i understand that is the devphone argument, i too am an early adopter, but i am also one that jailbroke (i hate that term) rooted my phone.
of course there is no cheaper option with a contract - discounts on handsets for contracts is called subsidy - which means that the carrier discounts the phone in exchange for a contract. there are no discounts without contracts.
if you read the article that you wrote about it clearly states that HTC is out of the loop, they build the hardware, then the carrier bids for it, then google writes android for that targeted device and t-mobile adds its software to it and it is BRANDED to T-Mobile (which falls in line with the subsidy)
HTC does not control when/why/how or the what of updates so clearly HTC can only speculate that the update will be available. they do not have any hand in delivering updates to T-Mobile G1s.
G1 Cupcake update released?
I was just on the line with customer support for T-Mobile (g1 keeps freezing) and the woman asked me what firmware i had.I told her I had RC30, and then she said "Ok because I know we just released the Cupcake update, and i received a lot of calls from Arizona yesterday about it." She said she was notified that it started rolling out as well.
Obviously take it with a grain of salt from a CS rep, but the fact that she knew about Cupcake gives a little hope.......right?
Sounds promising (I don't think she'd mention it if they'd put it on themselves). I know CS reps are kinda unreliable, I got my G1 today, and had an indian guy who kept asking his friend in the background what to say =/ Also wanted to charge me £250 for "Default" options i never asked... I specifically chose a price plan I knew I could afford as it's my first contract (actually my girlfriend pays for it, but its her first contract too, since we live together, our money is shared) I hardly ever go abroad so i'd never use the International calling, Voice + Data roaming which were apparently activated by defualt. Imagine having your credit rating destroyed at 18!!
I hope the G1 version of cupcake comes with a small onscreen keyboard like WM phones, i hate having to flip the phone out do do a one word reply or something... And possibly autorotate, atleast on pictures!
lol CS reps rely on rumors and **** too...
well I'm speaking of in store reps actually. I went to pre-order my G1 (thought I had to do it in store) and I asked if he had a place to sign up for one, and he said nah, its not coming out for a month, we are getting that....and the Android phone...and I'm like wtf? whats the android? he's like I'll show you...and he shows me an image of the Touch HD. lol.
I knew he was wrong from the get, but i wanted to see where he was going with this.
japan fast wtf!
Alright guys, I'm a relatively new android user owning the MT3G since the day it came out. As it stands, I'm pretty confused with google's branding and partnership with my device. As it stands, even though I have a "with google" device, I don't receive updates for their operating system first, they only go to the highest bidder or newest tech despite the fact that my phone is less than 3 months old. I don't receive any special updates other than the updates everyone else gets as well. All of the applications "with google" are available free from the market. My "with google" version has 100+mb less ram than the normal HTC Magic. HTC offers their customers the Sense UI. Motorola entices customers with Blur. Google customers get... nothing. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why any customer after doing some research, would want to have a "google experience" phone. So far, my personal experience has been: With Google = **** you.
To me it just seems like an expensive name drop and a lubeless fist to their customers, or am I just completely missing all the amazing features of my google device?
you (should) get OTA updates ... devices which dont have the "with Google" dont and need to wipe for every update (and there is no 1.6 for HTC magic ...)

Btw the Verizon Hero has the 'with google' branding and it has Sense UI, so I'm not sure that 'with google' really means anything on Android phones. It certainly does not make them exclusive in any way.
Its not google that youre pissed at its "Teen-Mobile". They had the first Android (g1) over a year ago. It took them an entire year to release the MT3G, that means it took them an entire year to add a small amount of internal memory, and NO ram. thats the only improvement they could manage.
I feel your pain, its pretty embarrassing to be with a company who's third and "best" Android, the culmination of over a year of work is still literally worse, according to hardware and overall capability than ANY of their competitor's Android phones.
Im pretty sure they cut the ram by a third because they knew that they had the Cliq coming out after the MT3G, and it has 256mb ram so if they didnt screw the MT3G then the Cliq wouldnt have much to make it an improvement. I not sure what TMO's angle is but it definitely isnt consumer friendly

The "with Google" has nothing to do with if you get OTA updates or not. OTA updates depend on the carrier. Some Sprint Heros have the "with Google" branding, but it will not receive OTA updates, instead they have to update it through computer because Sprint doesn't send OTA updates, so I've heard.

Actually, the mytouch and htc magic are different, that's why we have 32a and 32b roms and not to be hurtful or anything but he did say the devices that don't have the "with Google " dont get ota updates and last time I checked, the mytouch has it and the HTC Magic doesn't.
Im not concerned about the absence of sense ui or motoblur, because i like the vanilla android the most.
Im more concerned, as you are, about the lack of updates for android. It's really weird that they cant come up with some sort of standard making it possible to update an androidphone like magic to 2.0. Noone knows if 2.0 will come to magic. Thats what concerns me.

If anything, 2.0 should come to the magic because it has enough space. Phones with custom UIs will have to wait, since the UIs will also need to be updated.

I don't understand why there is so much discussion on whether the Magic will get Android 2.0. It is only 6 months old in Europe, and even younger than that in the states. I thought the whole idea of Android was it was designed to be an upgradeble OS. Seems obvious to me that it will get the 2.0 upgrade - and 2.5 and 3.0 until the hardware is no longer capable. HTC would not abandon a device that has been out less than a year.

I think people are just nervous that since the G1 might not get the update, even though it's less only a little over a year old, the MT3G/Magic will stop getting updates soon.
So I'm reading on Android sites that 2.1 will come to Droid and Eris on Dec. 11th. I know Sprint doesn't have OTA updating for things larger than 10MB sorted out yet so are we screwed? I am really going to be pissed if the Eris gets Sense with 2.1 while Hero's get left with 1.5. Does anyone know if there would be an updater like RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release.exe so that Hero users can install without waiting for some OTA fix? The people at Sprint seem less than competent when it comes to Android stuff so I have no faith. For example, my wife's Hero came with the wrong firmware (version 1.22.651.1 instead of 1.29.651.1) and she couldn't get the OTA bug fix. The Sprint solution was to take it back to Best Buy and do an exchange because, and I quote, "there is no way to update that phone." Well I came home and ran the RUU and it worked perfectly. So much for their tech support.

Well, if it comes down to it I am sure we could get an Eris 2.1 dump and port it over to the Hero but I am sure once released we will get our hands on Hero 2.1. Also, if the Dec 11th date is correct then that is great news. I don't see why HTC wouldnt release Hero 2.1 and Eris 2.1 in tandem. Speculation I hate you. lol
These updates and dumps are NOT coming to us for some reason. I don't there is one person that is going to port a full ROM to the CDMA verision of the Hero. We're just smelly Americans that don't deserve it apparently.

I think that HTC will release it for the Eris and not the Hero because they won't have Sprint's permission to release it. When I was having the firmware issue I described in the OP I talked to HTC first and they admitted they could fix it but since Sprint won't give them the go ahead for any updates they are bound not to release anything. I asked about future updates and he said it would be only with the carriers permission. I know it sounds pessimistic but I can see HTC rolling out the update for Verizon because their OTA is working. Sprint, on the other hand, would be forced to have customers download the update and manually install or have them come in to the service centers. I'm sure they think their customers are too inept for the former and considering the level of competence in their service centers I don't see the latter happening either. If by some miracle they have OTA working I will gladly eat my words but from what I have heard they aren't even close to having a fix.
I don't see why Sprint would make a big issue with the OTA bug or whatever it is. There is no reason why they wouldn't post an update for people to download. That's how it's been done for years with WinMo. And I don't think the average Hero user would even know there is an update. Mostly it would be people like us. And if the average user knows about it, well, it's probably cause one of us told them about it

Ok. First off, Sprint will release an update. It may be more delayed than others but we will get it. That said there are two options. Either A) We get a dump of the HTC official rom before Sprint releases it or B) someone posts an Eris 2.1 rom which we can then mold.

We are not getting any roms made for us because we are 1.5. 1.5 was easy to make roms for on GSM because it had GSM built into it officially from Google. CDMA however was not native until 1.6. Once the 2.1 firmware is released we should be able to more easily port over other roms including Cyanogen and all the others. Also, if there was another 1.5 firmware from HTC we could port it. For instance, the Eris dump we can port. It wouldnt make sense to because its the same as the Hero so we never did. Porting over Moto or LG or Samsung is more difficult because of driver issues.
Look, simply put, we could argue back and forth about this forever but when it comes down to it CDMA Hero will be as good as any other phone out there when the update is released and one way or another we will have the update shortly after HTC releases it.
Oh and I may be smelly but if I'm American I don't mind being smelly. Politics should really not be mixed with these posts. We are one community regardless of nation.

10mb has to be some fictional number, I've gotten PLENTY of OTA updates in excess of 10mb, specifically one for the pre which was 80 something MB
And before you say something about wifi, I started and finished the d/l at work with no wifi coverage what-so-ever.
This restriction is just a rumor... and a lame one at that. Someone is misinformed, even if a sprint rep is saying that, I would love to talk to him and find out exactly where they THINK the restriction is at.

Knowing that my hopes are always crushed, I can only assume Sprint will drag their feet for the next 2 months getting it to us. We will probably have to rely on those really nice Droid and Eris owners to dump us a Rom that one of the smart devs (this eliminates me) here can do something with.
My opinion, make it yours.
dont you need root to be able to dump a system rom? i dont think the droid or the eris are rooted yet, so how would we get a dump? just asking.

True but this is a good sign as obviously the Hero 2.1 dump has been unwatermarked. I am trying to see if there is a way I can get ahold of the dump because I believe it might be a CDMA dump. If not, then we will just have to wait.

Wait if Android 1.6 and 2.0 both have CDMA support built in then all we're missing our the specific drivers for the Hero which should be available in the 2.0 leak to GSM phones right?
Also, I don't understand how we are at a disadvantage because CDMA wasn't built into 1.5. The drivers for individual phones aren't built into Android so why wouldn't that sink us just as much as the no-CDMA thing?
Is it just me, or it looks like the HTC Magic is been forgotten by HTC.?
HTC Android phones are getting updates, while the Magic (and there for the Dream) are being forgotten... even the Droid is getting updates!
Whne are we gonna get some love from HTC?
Yep sure seems that way, I was waiting for the sense update but doesnt look like its happening. Be rooting it soon
I know, they promised a update on NOVEMBER!!! its already december and no news =(
Take the plunge and root it. Putting the CM rom on my Magic made me totally dig my phone
That's the sad state of our beloved HTC Magics. Really it isn't a stretch to expect updates since the Hero has the same hardware.
The Magic is easily the most under rated android phone, being able to do anything a Hero can do just is never given the chance to do so.
we had cupcake to donut the problem is becasue we have a smaller internal memory chip

Very tempted but mine is a work phone but if it goes bad, even unusable for a few day I`d have to buy another phone.
Also see alot of the roms have problems with BT etc which i cant have
i think another problem is HTC/the networks want to sell the new handsets they are releasing and if they update the handsets then it will be as good as there newly released handsets (software wise) so why would we want to buy a new handset from them untill it becomes a hardware issue
What annoys me is that HTC leaked the were updating the magic to sense. So I brought the magic(cause the hero is ugly) thinking I will update it and now there is no update.
Dont think my next phone will be htc

My new MyTouch 3G was just automagically updated to firmware 1.6. Could it be that 2.0 is close behind? Be still my geeky heart. #TMobile

does this mean that Tmobile is indeed working on getting 2.0 out for mytouch3g and possibly g1 (sincei ts similar HW)?
no
The one thing we can say for sure about tmobile's android strategy is that they prefer to stay at least 1 or 2 large steps behind their competition. So until they show more than the slightest interest in Android, which could happen should the rumors prove true, im not holding by breath. It took them nearly a year to produce their 2nd Android phone (mt3g), and it had 0 performance improvements on the first Android phone (g1). This simply isnt a carrier that, at this point, has done anything to show any confidence in the google operating system after their initial attempt with the g1. Im hoping to baby jesus that their confidence and outlook for Android changes, but tmobile is the cheapest carrier, and they have poor coverage, so i would expect them to believe their customers arent interested in high-end devices. On the other hand i bought out my last contract just to get a g1, so hopefully their are enough of the same type of customers to get tmobile interested in keeping such customers...
mytouch is not getting 2.0, it's getting 2.5 and it is going to be released in january and it has flash player
the next release after 2.0 is 2.1, 2.5 is not coming out for a WHILE. I dont know where you heard about this but this is impossible.
Impossible is such an overused word. Improbable is more like it. this has already been discussed in a couple threads in the dream forums. that's why I said what I did about it. Someone was saying the release date for it is january 18. go check it out yourself.
Actually believe it or not I to have seen the talk for T-Mobile releasing the 2.5 update. I don't remember where, I will track down my source. But ya it wont be for the MT3G thou. I am pretty sure any way. I will look tonight for it. I think I was reading up for the Cliq and read after the decision on the Nexus One and a few other phone deals are made it will be decided on when the update will be allowed. Once again I will search for where I saw this. I am sorry for being empty handed right now. Please try and remember how fast all the other updates came thou. So 2.5 really isn't as far as we all think. The updates are only minor fixes that the Google staff and other affiliates get to work on everyday they punch in. So I would not be surprised if there isn't a 3.0 already being worked on.
I too have read in a few places the mt3g was getting 2.5. All I want is the better 2.0 onscreen keyboard and flash support.
UPDATE:
just psoted on same twitter:
@Sergiolvrd T-Mobile is coordinating with Google on future updates. Plz watch http://tinyurl.com/yatd2ul for news as available. Thanks!
