T-Mobile indeed upgrading mytouch to 2.0? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hey I was reading through Tmobile USA twitter and they posted something regarding to mytouch3g and 2.0
@articulategeek Yes, it is upgradable. T-Mobile is coordinating with Google on the next release.

My new MyTouch 3G was just automagically updated to firmware 1.6. Could it be that 2.0 is close behind? Be still my geeky heart. #TMobile

does this mean that Tmobile is indeed working on getting 2.0 out for mytouch3g and possibly g1 (sincei ts similar HW)?

no
The one thing we can say for sure about tmobile's android strategy is that they prefer to stay at least 1 or 2 large steps behind their competition. So until they show more than the slightest interest in Android, which could happen should the rumors prove true, im not holding by breath. It took them nearly a year to produce their 2nd Android phone (mt3g), and it had 0 performance improvements on the first Android phone (g1). This simply isnt a carrier that, at this point, has done anything to show any confidence in the google operating system after their initial attempt with the g1. Im hoping to baby jesus that their confidence and outlook for Android changes, but tmobile is the cheapest carrier, and they have poor coverage, so i would expect them to believe their customers arent interested in high-end devices. On the other hand i bought out my last contract just to get a g1, so hopefully their are enough of the same type of customers to get tmobile interested in keeping such customers...

mytouch is not getting 2.0, it's getting 2.5 and it is going to be released in january and it has flash player

the next release after 2.0 is 2.1, 2.5 is not coming out for a WHILE. I dont know where you heard about this but this is impossible.

Impossible is such an overused word. Improbable is more like it. this has already been discussed in a couple threads in the dream forums. that's why I said what I did about it. Someone was saying the release date for it is january 18. go check it out yourself.

Actually believe it or not I to have seen the talk for T-Mobile releasing the 2.5 update. I don't remember where, I will track down my source. But ya it wont be for the MT3G thou. I am pretty sure any way. I will look tonight for it. I think I was reading up for the Cliq and read after the decision on the Nexus One and a few other phone deals are made it will be decided on when the update will be allowed. Once again I will search for where I saw this. I am sorry for being empty handed right now. Please try and remember how fast all the other updates came thou. So 2.5 really isn't as far as we all think. The updates are only minor fixes that the Google staff and other affiliates get to work on everyday they punch in. So I would not be surprised if there isn't a 3.0 already being worked on.

I too have read in a few places the mt3g was getting 2.5. All I want is the better 2.0 onscreen keyboard and flash support.

UPDATE:
just psoted on same twitter:
@Sergiolvrd T-Mobile is coordinating with Google on future updates. Plz watch http://tinyurl.com/yatd2ul for news as available. Thanks!

Discussion about Cupcake on the G1!!

Well, the Cupcake release looks great as it adds loads of new features and bug fixes!
I was just wondering how one would install it on the G1? And when we would we be able to do so?
Hi, thanks for your reply in my thread btw I have read that it will be OTA (over the air i think)? So should be wireless and automatic, but then again I only found that out by one website 10 minutes ago
where did you find out info on the cupcake upgrade, cuz I never heard of it yet and would like to know more.
Googling it isnt so hard is it?
This one is nice..

You can either
1. (For those running RC30 stock) you will be notified that an update is available and a reboot is required. Just hit reboot and you will phone will install the update and come back up on its own.
2. (for those with root or RC30 stock) download the update package from Google, rename it to update.zip and put it on your sdcard. Turn off your phone and turn it back on again holding power + home. You will eventually see a picture of a phone with a exclamation point. open the keyboard and hit alt+L and then alt+s. The update will be applied and then you will be prompted to hit home+back to restart.

most likely early Jan
Discussion about Cupcake....G1 involved
And here I thought it was a given.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/30/cupcake-confirmed-for-t-mobile-g1/
Wow. If T-Mobile are going to refuse to give us Android updates later, even though the G1 will be capable of handling all of them for a long time to come (maybe because they want us to upgrade to a new phone), then I've lost all hope for the Android platform altogether.
Who knows what T-Mobile could do out of greed? When the G2 comes out, perhaps they will force us to get that in order to get the latest Android updates... But if HTC isn't even 100% sure that the G1 will get Cupcake unofficially, then I'm suspecting something sour on T-Mobile's end.
Say the G1 post RC30 never gets a proper jailbreak exploit. G1 users may all be stuck on some outdated update.

well, you have to understand that T-Mobile and Google need to work to ensure that the everyday customer will benefit from this update. Yes the new functionality is great but if there are security problems with it, it wont be logical to deploy to thousands upon thousands of customers. Look at the bigger picture. If you want complete control over your device and want to use cupcake everyday, the DevPhone is your option. only 10% of g1 users are devs.

There's the Dev Phone argument again. There's two problems with the dev phone:
1. G1 Early adopters (I'm in this camp)
2. No cheaper option with a contract
HTC is implying they aren't 100% sure if Cupcake will ever come to the G1. This, I think, is pretty dangerous thinking.
Well basically Google developes the updates then gives them to Tmobile. Then Tmobile decides if it meets their standards then they release it. Its not official till Tmobile says they are going to push it out. I doubt Tmobile wouldn't release it but they never officially release Winmo 6.1 but you can still get it.

You can only do that if you have a "jailbroken" phone (pardon the vocabulary). And that's just not possible with the official RC30 now.

yes i understand that is the devphone argument, i too am an early adopter, but i am also one that jailbroke (i hate that term) rooted my phone.
of course there is no cheaper option with a contract - discounts on handsets for contracts is called subsidy - which means that the carrier discounts the phone in exchange for a contract. there are no discounts without contracts.
if you read the article that you wrote about it clearly states that HTC is out of the loop, they build the hardware, then the carrier bids for it, then google writes android for that targeted device and t-mobile adds its software to it and it is BRANDED to T-Mobile (which falls in line with the subsidy)
HTC does not control when/why/how or the what of updates so clearly HTC can only speculate that the update will be available. they do not have any hand in delivering updates to T-Mobile G1s.
G1 Cupcake update released?
I was just on the line with customer support for T-Mobile (g1 keeps freezing) and the woman asked me what firmware i had.I told her I had RC30, and then she said "Ok because I know we just released the Cupcake update, and i received a lot of calls from Arizona yesterday about it." She said she was notified that it started rolling out as well.
Obviously take it with a grain of salt from a CS rep, but the fact that she knew about Cupcake gives a little hope.......right?
Sounds promising (I don't think she'd mention it if they'd put it on themselves). I know CS reps are kinda unreliable, I got my G1 today, and had an indian guy who kept asking his friend in the background what to say =/ Also wanted to charge me £250 for "Default" options i never asked... I specifically chose a price plan I knew I could afford as it's my first contract (actually my girlfriend pays for it, but its her first contract too, since we live together, our money is shared) I hardly ever go abroad so i'd never use the International calling, Voice + Data roaming which were apparently activated by defualt. Imagine having your credit rating destroyed at 18!!
I hope the G1 version of cupcake comes with a small onscreen keyboard like WM phones, i hate having to flip the phone out do do a one word reply or something... And possibly autorotate, atleast on pictures!
lol CS reps rely on rumors and **** too...
well I'm speaking of in store reps actually. I went to pre-order my G1 (thought I had to do it in store) and I asked if he had a place to sign up for one, and he said nah, its not coming out for a month, we are getting that....and the Android phone...and I'm like wtf? whats the android? he's like I'll show you...and he shows me an image of the Touch HD. lol.
I knew he was wrong from the get, but i wanted to see where he was going with this.

Sprint has spoken :P (twitter)

Slight clarification on Android OS updates for the HTC Hero & Samsung Moment. Will be updating straight to Android 2.1, not 2.0, in 1H2010.
http://twitter.com/sprint
So we have as much as 6 months to wait, but at least they've spoken!
And if google releases android 2.3+ within the next 6 months.....HTC & Sprint will just delay again and go with the newer OS...This is sooo un-cool.
Haha...I love the 1h...We are gonna have 2.1 up by then. Go XDA! XD

I was about to say that. It's almost like they are delaying on purpose. Not to worry...anything that is in the newer Androids these guys here at XDA can put in the Hero.
i guess we will have to wait for Sprint to have another delay before they say EXACTLY what we want to hear for our Androids..
XDA RULEZZ!!
Don't worry guys, once Verizon releases the Eris update, we can pretty much pick that apart and put it on our devices.
You think Verizon will get the 2.1 update out before sprint does? I mean there's a first for everything and all but I remember almost every Win Mo phone that has shared the two, software updates where much more likely to see sprint first. I haven't heard Verizon say when there's is coming out either and they seem to be slower or more thorough in testing.
If sprint doesn't get off there butt and release 2.x soon, then they will be loosing a customer. I for one am tired of their lazy asses being last to do upgrades. you know im sure that they could release the source with the module sources, and the more than qualified Devs here could have us a 2.x rom within days. Who cares about Rosie. I mean really. GET WITH IT SPRINT!!!!!
Sprint is waiting for all the devs on here to get the Hero on 2.1 then they will take all these dev. hard work and put it into their install and say that it' ready. I think the people on here are moving faster than Sprint can ever hope to.
At this rate, we're gonna see 2.1 looong before Sprint does.

I have been with sprint for a long time and dont get me wrong they are really slow when it comes to releasing updates, but at the same time I noticed with my blackberry that when they do finally release updates that unlike some of these other carriers that just push the stuff out to try to be the most up to date. sprint doesnt have nearly the same amount of problems with their release. yes they are slow, yes if you are on this forum then you want to be cool and be farther ahead than the general public, and that there is nothing wrong with that but, dont get mad at sprint because they want to be a little cautious and and make sure that stuff works right when they send it to their customers.

And if they were updating to 2.0 and not to 2.1, then a LOT of people would be upset that they did not update to the latest available OS. Give them a break, at least its an official word that they are in fact updating to the most current OS. I do understand they take forever, but hey, for such a cheap monthly charge I am more than happy to wait and maximize the experience with 1.5 and then get a feeling for new phone when the update comes out. (OF Course... 2.1 its gonna be around XDA WAY before, but kudos to sprint for coming out officially and giving us the official word).
Im spreading a rumor.Flipz is a secret undercover agent for Sprint. he develops all these hot fixes and tools and laughs at you wanting more.
So glad that we can Root and forget about waiting on sprint to hand a OTA update.
I honestly dont care about 2.0. As others have said, there is only one phone running the OS so not that big of deal. What i dont understand is why not the upgrade to 1.6? It came out right about the same time as the hero if memory serves me right. And based on what i have read, it really just 1.5 with some fixes, not all the added features like 2.0. Now im sure the bright minds at sprint could have had sense working on 1.6 in a matter of days if its just some fixes, but i cant know for sure. Most android phones run 1.6, apps are being created for 1.6 and higher, yet we have to wait for 2.1? Doesnt seem like a good way to keep or gain customers.
wow i posted that then logged off and its already on the second page

Sprint Speaks via Twitter on 2.1 Update

Might be the bearer of unhappy news here, but Sprint sent a couple of tweets out today concerning the update.
http://twitter.com/sprint/status/13553847246
"Android users:Sprint continues to work closely w Samsung/HTC on 2.1, on track to be avail Q2. Sprint had hoped to have this resolved by now."
http://twitter.com/sprint/status/13553862034
"Many thanks to our customers for your continued patience as we work to bring you a positive experience with the 2.1 upgrade."
I guess the fevor pitch got too high and they felt a need to defuse it. Was that a hint of frustration on Sprint's part there as well? ("...had hoped to have this resolved by now.")
Anyway, back to being satisfied with our ROMs for me. Sorry everyone.
least it's still a bit of hope for us not running 2.1 yet. It's a small step in the right direction. Sprint is finally communicating at least something.
How does this pertain to us ? I mean I am not currently waiting on a possible update for my Sprint Samsung Hero.

Couldn't agree more.
Things like this really make me wonder why people are so into the Evo. This is like Deja Vu. The hero came out with old software that had been running on the g1 for a year. Then we sit and wait for 7 months for an update that will most likely be old by the time we get it. They are working on 2.2 and that is coming soon. Now people are going to jump on the same bandwagon for the evo which is the exact situation with the hero. They release the phone in june with software that is going to be considered old a few months later. Everyone that gets the evo will then complain that they are not on 2.2 and how sprint and htc dropped the ball again.
Me personally, I don't think I will get the evo just because of this fiasco. I have been using 2.1 for a while and it's great but is it worth all this headache.....NO. If android doesn't fix this fragmentation they will lose lots of customers. This will really be felt when the new iphone comes out. It's easy for them to play back and forth now but when the biggest competitor comes out, these problems will not be overlooked by most consumers.
I personally think that this update is being held back till the evo comes out so they can sway consumers to that product. Business isn't always about pleasing the consumer. Sprint has got your money and htc has got your money. They want you to buy a new phone and that's that. I wouldn't be suprised if the update drops the same exact week as the evo. They will say sorry for the delay and not meeting the Q2 but it's coming out soon. Nothing is etched in stone and we are just hanging on every word hoping something new will be released.
We have been dealing with broken youtube player and nothing has been done or mentioned to fix it. Do you really want to take the risk in doing this again. Everything is going to be put aside till the evo drops. That is the phone that is supposedly going to save sprint it's decline in customers. The eris is going to be discontinued by verizon this month. This should show everyone that htc is not interested in these products anymore. If they were we would have gotten 1.6 when it became available. The hero was made to open the eyes of cdma customers to android. It did just that and now it's time to get you to upgrade so they can continue to make money. Why does sprint care if you get 2.1. There not going to make any money in dropping the update, so why rush.
my point exactly
I am really curious to know what problems with 2.1 are causing the delay?? After all we have a decent working version now. If there really is some big issue wouldn't we have found it by now?
I don't think its "Android," its Sprint w/ HTC and Samsung implementing 2.1 to their devices. But that's just me.

SMH........
My guess is that the problem lies with one of the POS sprint applications that are stripped out of almost all the custom ROMs since the problem is effecting both the Samsung and HTC updates. They have never worked right and in an application rich environment like Android, I don't think they are necessary. Nav was nice for 1.5, but no longer necessary. NFL is a decent application, but poorly implemented. You can't even let the screen turn off while streaming audio. Sprint TV is a cool idea, but again poorly implemented. It would always start up in the background for no reason. Many people have said it in defense of Sprint, sprint is not a software company... I know they outsource these applications, but it is to a company that has no apparent android experience.

The draw is that the Evo has sweet hardware, that and we Hero users have had a fully functional 2.1 for quite some time due to devs. What is the problem? Is there some other Android handset which shipped with 1.5 Android that has had break neck updates?
Does it really matter? If someone is THAT hard up for the updated OS, they can get it without waiting for the official release. And if they're not that impatient, they're probably ok on what they're using.
The people that really want to upgrade their phone can and will do it. I see no reason to freak out about if/when Sprint will release their version of the upgrade.
And for what it's worth, Sprint has ALWAYS been behind in releasing OS updates. They were like that with WinMO as well. Hence one of the reasons people started hacking and developing ROMs to begin with.

Isn't Sprint still on track to have the only phones in the US upgraded to 2.1? I mean they are at least going to be the first ones to do it. Not that there aren't companies with a 2.1 phone.
And about fragmentation...it affects EVERY software company, unless the supply exact hardware. FroYo will likely take care of most of it - they approached it with a very modular design. And Rumor has it Gingerbread+ will have more specific hardware requirements, thought still less restrictive than Iphone and WinMo.
We are in an interesting time in the Mobile World. A lot of innovation is happening VERY quickly. It's simply Moore's Law. The next generation of hardware coming down the pipe is just TOO different than what we are running now.

Froyo's fast! Will we have it?

So does anyone know if the Evo will ship with Eclair (2.1) or Froyo (2.2)? I ask because I read an article today that said the built in JIT in Froyo is getting 37 MFLOPS on the Nexus One as opposed to the 6 MFLOPS in Eclair. If we are only going to have 2.1 on release I really can't wait until it's rooted so we can get 2.2.

The Evo will ship with 2.1 - mod 1.
However, there are rumors that once the phone is turned on, it will be prompted for an OTA 2.2 update -- The other rumor is that FroYo has already been put on some of the test Evo units, and will be out within six weeks of launch of the phone...
Then there's always the pessimists who say: The Moment and Hero has taken a millennium, so Sprint is gonna screw us over on the Evo too.
Believe what you will.

That gargantuan increase in speed is a bit misleading. The program they're using an application called LINPACK.
LINPACK is a number-crunching application that has performance properties that are almost the opposite of most types of software. Floating point operations are very easy to speed up with a JIT compiler (which is what Froyo is doing).
General purpose code is much harder to speed up. I wouldn't expect more than a factor of 2-2.5x speedup for the first generations of the compiler. But it'll still be a big improvement, I'm sure.
What's the big change with froyo, why is it so much better?

Versions of Android up to this date have been pretty rough around the edges; 2.1 is the only version that manages to show off what the operating system can really do. As time goes on, Google will refine it more and more, to the point where crashes and lag are virtually nonexistent.

Where are those rumors from? Got a link?

I hope since this will be Sprint's flagship phone, they will actually treat it like it is after it is released.
evo = Froyo?
www.google.com/m?hl=en&gl=us&client=ms-android-google&source=android-unknown&q=will+evo+get+froyo?
I spoke with a sprint store clerk the other day, he said that the evo will get the FroYo update soon after the nexus one, or so he thought.
I'm sure someone on XDA will have a JIT hack working for the EVO well before an official 2.2 update anyway... there's a JIT patch available for the moment and while it's a bit buggy (I had random reboots for a day before it stabilized) it already works. and the community for the EVO will be much larger than that of the moment

Sprint reps know LESS than most people in who visit this kind of forum. Sprint wont pass down confidential info to retail/call center reps since theres always someone who will go and spill the beans. You are better off reading engadget.com or some other site that deals with technology.

I second that. And I'd be that the froyo would be on EVO WITH sprint support since flash would work very well on the 4g network. This could boost Sprint back up from their bad names.
And those sprint reps usually don't know too much... unless they are on these forums and are phone fanatics like the rest of us.

im kinda hurt lol i am a sprint employee but u guys are right they do hold out on us juss not as much as you guys think....
I would almost count on the EVO not getting FroYo for a long time because Android 2.2 comes with built in wi-fi hotspot capability. A feature Sprint will be hoping to sell you at +$30/month. Unless they decide to cripple that aspect of 2.2 so they can continue to charge for their own version of it.

I bet we get it. Sprint and HTC will want to push a f****on of these things out to customers. The best way to do that is to keep them updated. It'll be Sprint's flagship phone for the next year.
Mod Edit: Please watch your language. Thanks.
who knows whether or not Froyo will come to the Evo, but this is one positive sign. where google used to be promoting the nexus one, they still are (on tmobile) but if you click on "Get Your Phone" at google.com/phone you'll see Google mentions the Evo if you have Sprint:
"For Sprint, you can pre-register for the HTC EVO 4G, a powerful Android phone with support for Sprint's 3G & 4G network. Go to sprint.com to pre-register now!"
https://www.google.com/phone/choose?hl=en&gl=US&s7e=
so basically at least google is paying attention to and acknowledging this handset... not a bad sign
Agreed. I'd really doubt that Google would totally neglect a device they themselves are pushing on their own website. Furthermore, Sprint kind of needs this update to make at least some of the features of the Evo work in the first place. If they were to block the update altogether, the phone wouldn't sell nearly as well as they'd like it to.
No one knows for sure. This is because these companies have serious commitment issues and refuse to announce anything until they have to. There is no logical reason to suspect that this phone won't have a FroYo release very soon. I must say I'm rather annoyed that it won't have it at release since I see no reason they couldn't have been working on it this past month or two. Google needs to find some contractual way to light a fire under the handset manufacturers/service providers collective arse to ensure they stop dragging their feet on updates. It only hurts them in the end.

It won't be Google that neglects the handset, it'll Sprint if it happens. I personally feel that it will ship with 2.1 and won't be immediately updated with Froyo. Most people who will buying the EVO won't know of benefits (if any) of Froyo. Sprint usually likes to sit on updates to make sure all their apps (Nascar - good grief) continue to work as expected.
Confirmed: HTC EVO 4G Will Run Froyo

take it with a grain of salt

No Froyo Yet..SORRY!

Just got off the phone with 611, they said that a update should be sent out this week and/or by next week.
It was confirmed around 1pm yesterday! BELIEVE IT!
Froyo here we come!
Im running a Cm6 Nightly build and I love it, I'm still contemplating about getting the update of just staying rooted. We'll see
Happy Flashing!
Okay guys, good and bad news!
I decided to call 2 more times bc Tmobile has the tendency to lie to customers, so there will not be a update coming out for us as of yet..
Sadness news I've ever given..
It makes me mad sometimes i was talking to a rep (dust under my screen) and i asked if the update was coming out soon... and the lady said were not even getting one i hope this is true i heard it may start pushing on the 25th

Well I called tmobile and they said that they are planning to update our phones to 2.2 but not until the Mytouch 4G is coming out.
Edit: This is what I got from this website... http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/myTouch-3G/Ladies-and-Gentleman-Froyo/td-p/496813
"Q: When can non myTouch 3G devices expect the Android 2.2 (aka Froyo update)
A: We are working to provide Froyo at a later date for non myTouch 3G devices. (i.e. myTouch 3.5mm jack, Fender Limited Edition and Slide) Check T-Mobile Forums for updates."
I honestly don't know why anybody would trust ANY of the call center CSRs. It's clear they don't know ANYTHING. They are typical tier 1 type support staff who only know how to read from a script. Step 1: power cycle, step 2: reset the phone...ect ect. They don't have any inside info on release dates for updates....clearly. Because both on here and the Tmo forums, I read all kinds of comments about what info people are getting when they call support. Some say the Slide is getting it tomorrow, some say next month, some say never....and some say "What is Froyo?".
The BEST information source is this forum and the Tmo forums. Every leaked phone, or leaked OS update, has been a bad scan or photo of an internal memo given to employees. THEN you will have the date. Until then, anybody who claims to know when or have a date is just completely guessing or listening to false information from someone else who is guessing.
Gosh, thats all the way in November anyway so looks like we have to wait.

lol thanks for that info, will check it out
I actually got word from a rep in the store that end of august was the target date. But at this point.. i've seen/heard/read so many "a rep told me...." stories i don't pay any of them any attention. All official docs say we'll get it at a "later date" and I'm happy with that. to be honest.. i'm only hoping it comes out so devs can mod it and get fully functioning bluetooth and sense ported over. I'm not interested in the stock one from t-mo. CM has more options. i'm good with that right thur.

We're definitely getting it right after the myTouch 4g. T-Mo is making chess moves, in other words they're playing it smart by giving us a chance to get rid of the Slide and pick up the 4g. The 4g is a very good phone but it still isn't enough for me to drop the Slide. If you watch the video reviews the software is very similiar. The processor and front cam is another story though. If we all had the Froyo update with flash support then I don't think that most of us would buy the phone and that's why T-mo isn't giving us the update till the phone is released. The only way I'm dropping the Slide is for the Nexus 2. Google's flagship phone will always get updates before any other phone.

I'm not going anywhere near the 4g. If the G2 root problems are any indicator.. the 4g my be just as hard to get rooted.. and secondly
i like my friggin keyboard. and no one uses vid calls! i have friends with iphone 4. they use it to show off to other non iphone people... thats it.. they rarely make calls that way

I agree with you, but that's only as of right now. Video calls is the future so more and more people will have it. It will be the new standard, but I can live without it. I love having a physical keyboard although swype works well. I think T-mo is gonna release a keyboard version accouple months down the line.

agreed. I think they will as well and I'll probably jump on that one. I was kind of hoping there would have been a cam on the g2 but alas... there was not... so right now i don't really see it as an "upgrade" from a slide... thats more like a lateral move... i mean really.. what are you gaining? a faster processor.... on a mobile phone....?!? other than that the hinge is cool and it's a sleek device. but I'm not shelling out hundreds for that. I'll await the next mytouch with keyboard (besides.. i LIKE the sense ui... i HATE the genius button)

I love the sense ui also. The genius button has potential, but the biggest downside is the load time. I thought it was a low processor issue, but if you watch a few reviews on youtube of the myTouch 4g then you'll see that even it loads the software slow so it must be the program that needs tweaking. As for waiting for the next slide, i would choose the nexus 2 if it comes first so you know that you're guaranteed updates.
