Hi chowdarygm,
when you say data connections, are you referring to Wi-Fi?
If you are using Advanced Configuration tweaking tool, open the application and then select Menu | More Settings | Connections. The options below should let you know if your connection is set to automatically disconnect after a specific amount of time.
EDIT: also check HD Tweak as you can set you Data Connection to automatically disconnect after a certain amount of time.
I hope this helps you out.
Regards.

No problem, i will keep my fingers crossed for you

I've had problems with a couple of roms being unable to connect to 3G, even with the correct radio. Most of them are fine there's just 2 or 3 that didn't work. Never figured out why.

chowdarygm, this is a power management issue meaning the phone is pre-set to disconnect after it's been idle for awhile so as to save battery. It's normal. If you haven't fixed your issue by now and If you're handy with a registry editor, go to HKLM\Comm\PPTP1\Parms. Inside "parms" look for "disable power management" and set its dword (decimal value) to 1, hit "ok" and softreset. Your data should then stay on continuously. This setting allows me to stay connected to my VPN using the PPTP protocol, but to do so it keeps my carrier data connection alive. This should work for you whether or not you use a VPN. Good Luck!!

Auto-Disconnect UMTS?

I have searched the forum for a tweak that can automatically disconnect the UMTS data after being idle for X minutes but do not see it. I only see a tweak to keep it alive. I want the opposite. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
On most roms all you have to do is press and hold the hang up button to disconnect the data by yourself.

I know that. But that is manual and tedious.
Some of my apps automatically open the data connection, so I want a way to automatically close it after it's done.
I am interested as well if someone knows of a tweak for it... When I hit the 3G area near my home, my battery goes pretty quick. On EDGE my battery life is awesome.

There's a little program which does exactly this for GPRS. I haven't tried, but I would assume it also works for UMTS. To achieve this functionality, it just sets the value of the registry key HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\CacheTimer to the idle time (in seconds) after which GPRS (and hopefully UMTS) will get disconnected.
Cheers

Nope, just tried that in my registry and it still doesn't disconnect.
GB-SOFT GPRS & Audio Tweak
i am running this on my universal for that purpose and it works on umts in tokyo. i haven't tried it on my hermes though as i want to keep the connection always on for my push email, but i think it should work on hermes as well. give it a shot, it's free.

Here's something that may or may not be useful to some. I used to think that for ease of access to webpages I would have GPRS always set to on. I did this using Tweaks2k2 under phone tricks. But this was a pest as when I wanted to use wifi the GPRS kept trying to take over.
I went back to Tweaks2k2 and unchecked GPRS always on. Now when I'm not using wifi and I go to a webpage the GPRS connects nicely but the second it's downloaded the page it instantly disconnects itself and stays off - ideal for me.
Before, enabling the continuous connection and then disabling it using Tweaks2k2, if I connected to GPRS it would stay connected until I manually turned it off again, but now it does it automatically and without delay. (I'm assuming it was THIS that has created my, as and when needed GPRS connection). Certainly saves having to set idle times etc to get it to auto shut off.

Try PhoneAlarm
It has an option to do exactly this. I use it to disconnect after 2 mins and activesync to run every 30 mins and it has improved my battery life immensely.
Rob
I think it can help you. It's very usefull and saves the battery.
It's a little C program that checks the gprs/umts connections every 2 minutes. althought the pda could be suspended the program checks the connections every two minutes. If there isnt data flow then the connection is closes.
It has 4 buttons.
DISABLE: It disables the checks. So if you are surfing the web and you dont want the program closes the connection push this button.
ENABLE: Enable the checks again.
OK: Closes de window (the program continues activated. You can open the window again tapping the little blue icon in the botton).
CLOSE: Close the program.
I recomment the put it in ROM and you should create a shortcut and put it in \windows\startup directory.
Yip, another good one to try. Thanks

It doesnt modify any registry setting. It is a program checking the state of the ras connections each 2 minutes........ Later i will post the source code. Now i have to go.....

I'm sure you are right but ever since I used Tweaks2k2 and turned the GPRS setting off the always on connection it disconnects from GPRS the second the page is downloaded. There is no wait for a period up to 2 minutes. As soon as I tap on another link to another webpage it fires up GPRS again followed by an instantaneous disconnect after page downloaded. Of course if it's caching the page the period of time it takes to display the page might be getting on for two minutes. However many pages take far less time than that - e.g. text only pages and I'm not aware of any delay in the GPRS disconnecting but I'll test this tonight.
Bottom line is this works for me, but as there seem to be, according to posts above, lots of applications to power the GPRS on and off (and stay off until it's needed), then presumably we are all happy now??

That is the program I linked to in the first post, and it uses the registry key I mentioned.
Just to double-check - after you made the change to the registry, did you shut down (keep power key pressed until a dialog box pops up - do not just soft-reset!) and reboot your TyTN?
Also, make sure GPRS Always-On is off: check that "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A3 8-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\<your GPRS connection name>\AlwaysOn" is set to 0.

All my other registry edits only require a soft reboot.
Btw, my AlwaysOn for that key is defaulted to 0 anyways. So just this registry setting alone does not disconnect my data when idle.
A side note, I have an 8525 and not a Tytn, but that shouldn't matter.

That depends on how quickly you reboot after you made a change. The registry is not immediately flushed back to Flash memory, so if you do a soft reset too quickly, your registry changes may get lost. A shutdown with the power key forces writing any unsaved registry changes to Flash memory, so you're always on the safe side.
Something different: SKTracker can make snapshots of a system (including the registry), and also compare such snapshots. The trial version is limited, but it can create snapshots and the resulting "diffs". I used that tool to find out what GPRS Tweak does. Might also be of interest to you. And you can uninstall it afterwards.
Cheers

I'm suprise not more people are asking about this since UMTS appears to drain the battery so quickly. Oh well.

GPRS tries to connect when already connected to Wifi

Hi, i have a very strange and unpleasant problem with my Hermes.. At home I am using my wifi connection to receive mails etc. My Hermes connects to the wifi network normally, but when I want to use internet connection (IE, Outlook..) it will start GPRS. I have to turn wifi of and back on to be able to use it. It is pretty annoying as you can imagine. Now I am using latest Tytn WWE rom, but i have had same problems with T-mobile rom.
My old Wizard is connecting normally and has never done something stupid like this Do anyone have some clue what may cause this strange behaviour?
Have you confirmed that the home WiFi connection is configured as 'Connects to: The Internet'? In comm manager turn off the WiFI then go into settings/connections/Network Cards and you will be presented with all the networks used or previously found by your TyTn wireless card.
Select you named home wireless connection and you will be presented with the screen "Configure Wireless Network". Make sure that the entry against "Connects to:" i sset to The Internet - then press OK (top right), then dismiss the settings windows.
Try the connection again - it worked for me a while back. If already set at "connects to the Internet" then try deleting the settings and creating the entry again: press and hold on the connection (your home WiFi) then select "Remove Settings". Then turn on networked and set it up again remembering to select "connects to the Internet" when asked during the configuration of the WiFi connection. Of course you will again be prompted for a network key if you have a secure wireless router.
- if you all this then sorry but you didn't say. Hope it helps
I have already set it to connect to the internet few days ago. But i will try to remove those settings and do it again.. Hope it will solve the problem.
Thanks for your help. I'll report later..

Hi
I hear good things about Danielherrero's bandswitch app. This is a long thread and I think there are revisions along the way so best read through a sample of the pages:

Whether it will solve your particular issue I don't know - but worth a look?

Hmm.. I am already using that band switcher. Really a great program but unfortunatelly it cannot solve this issue.
But.. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel I've deleted my network settings and than set it again. And now it seems to be working! Hmm.. cannot be quite sure if it isn't just lucky day, but I've tested it more than 10 times and it seems to be OK.
Anyway... thanks for your help
Hopefully it will continue to work.
PS Is "cancer man" still alive or have the ciggies killed him off?
Mike
Glad to hear it worked OK. I too found it was teh only way to get mine initially working - since deleting and recreating the link it has worked OK (3 mths plus)
Aaah.. I heard that cancer man is still alive. But.. trust no one Hope he will not follow the Marlboro Man..
And by the way.. After few hours it still seems to be working. Thanks guys!!
Out of a month of use it has happened to me only once. I just turned off wifi then turned it back on. I believe the tytn is not recognising that it has a valid Internet connection.

Auto disconnect from Data Connection

Hello everybody.
I would my phone to disconnect after a set period of time from GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA or whatever else.
I tried registry hack, as mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377873.
I tried HD tweak and GS-SOFT tweak too. In every case I noticed that the registry key change effectively, but unfortunately the connection remains active.
Any solution?
Thanks in advance
Hello,
i have the same behavior, i tried GBSOFT and GPRS auto-disconnect, after the installation i can see that cachetime is 600 seconds in the registry and my connection is not closed after 5 minutes so I don't know how to stop it.
Sometimes the radio signal icon is not changed back to a G but the connection is really closed.

I have used HD Tweak and it works perfectly. What I did find however if you set up e-mail to check about the same amount of time as the disconnect it will never disconnect or reconnects pretty clost to disconnecting. So watch the software times for connecting to retrieve data, that will force a reconnect and then another wait to disconnect.
I am having exactly the same issue.
i have also tried changing the setting in advanced config and tweak HD but still nothing. very annoying!
If in POutlook I choose the option to download e-mail once in a day, how can I change the time of retrieval?

what schedule do you have it set at for it to work? i've tried to get email to check every 15 and 30 mintues and HD Tweak to disconnect after 1 minute and 5 minutes and just about every combination of them both and none of them will get the phone to disconnect data connection after retrieving email....help!!!
Yes, it seems new roms aren't compatible with these tweaks, did someone manage to do it? It sure is a battery drainer! :x
Start>Settings>Phone>Data>"Disable data connections (e.g. GPRS/3G) when device enters Sleep mode
Then set sleep mode to whatever you want the delay to be before it closes the data connection.
This may not be ideal for all of you, but hopefully it will help some. It works great for me. The data is never on unless I'm using it (ex. Opera) or if it's dling my email (once every 30min).

[Q] Data Connection Lost when on Standby

Hi,
Has anyone had the problem before, that when your screen switches off or goes in to standby, the Data Connection is lost.
Is there a fix for this?
Your help is much appreciated.
same here
I have the same "problem".
This is annoying since I use an app called Trackr, which displays live gps position.
you can change this with advanced config
I checked through all the configurations in advanced config and I dont see any relevant setting for keeping my connection "alive" even when my phone goes in to standby mode.
Could you point me to the right configuration? I might be overlooking it.

navigate to network->turn off wi-fi if no activity and change it to No
You could use Diamond Tweak for it. Setting 7.1 in this program allows you to keep WiFi running in standby mode.
What about data connection but NOT wifi connection? The data connection to my phone service always disconnects itself when in standby. Maybe I should use a new radio?

Why does my HD2 keep connecting to the internet? (on its own)

Every now and then, I notice that my phone connects to the internet (t-mobile internet). I find this strange because I've disabled everything (i can think of) from automatically updating or connecting (weather, email and msMyPhone). I have an unlimited data plan so I'm not particularly worried about the cost; however, it drains my battery fast. Just yesterday, I tapped the top of the screen to see my notifications and I noticed that t-mobile internet had been connected for over 2 hours. I just can’t figure out the cause. I've even done the auto disconnect registry tweak (auto disconnect after 60 seconds) but still no joy. If anyone can help or even suggest a process monitoring application, I’d be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

I think stock was the culprit. I removed it from the home tab from day one and as a result couldnt access it's settings. I put it back on and sure enough it was connecting every 30 mins.
Thanks alot mate. I'll report back in a day or two with the results, though I'm pretty certain it was the stock application.
If you want to be able to turn internet off so it cant connect when you dont want it to then just install the attached cab, run the program then you can enable or disable both settings as appropriate.
I also recommend to use NoData.
Just go to settings->wireless control->connection->advance->select network(choose my work connection if you havent rename it yet) If you would like to use hsdpa/edge/gprs again you will have to change it to as it was before.

Pls note that with nodata, you disable the internet connection but, if the connection is active while disabling it, you still need to end it manually after exiting nodata.
This sounds weird I know...
With dial-up enabler/dsabler it is a lot easier as you will see two connections: one is the internet connection configured on your phone and the other is the current active connection, and you can disable them at the same time.
In addition it does not have annoying confirmation messages on disabling and exiting

HD2 connection problem
Connect your HD2 to your computer and transfer the cad file to your mobile.
Find the file on your phone using File Explorer (on the phone).
Double click on it and follow the instructions.
Then go to Start and locate the nodata programme.
Start it and disable what you want.
I disabled the Orange (in my case) internet connection and WAP.
In my case it is crucial that I donet't g automatic access to internet services when I roam because I am on a PAYG tariff.
£20 last me up to three months normally with a different phone (SIC) and since I started using my HD2 my last top up lasted me less than a week.
It's a rip-off!
Once beaten, twice shy...
I won't be caught again!
Hope this helps
