Every now and then, I notice that my phone connects to the internet (t-mobile internet). I find this strange because I've disabled everything (i can think of) from automatically updating or connecting (weather, email and msMyPhone). I have an unlimited data plan so I'm not particularly worried about the cost; however, it drains my battery fast. Just yesterday, I tapped the top of the screen to see my notifications and I noticed that t-mobile internet had been connected for over 2 hours. I just can’t figure out the cause. I've even done the auto disconnect registry tweak (auto disconnect after 60 seconds) but still no joy. If anyone can help or even suggest a process monitoring application, I’d be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Did you disable the rest of the services ( HTC location service, stocks, Internet time sync, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube as well ? In my case the Stock were causing unwanted connections before I figured out..

I think stock was the culprit. I removed it from the home tab from day one and as a result couldnt access it's settings. I put it back on and sure enough it was connecting every 30 mins.
Thanks alot mate. I'll report back in a day or two with the results, though I'm pretty certain it was the stock application.
If you want to be able to turn internet off so it cant connect when you dont want it to then just install the attached cab, run the program then you can enable or disable both settings as appropriate.
I also recommend to use NoData.
Just go to settings->wireless control->connection->advance->select network(choose my work connection if you havent rename it yet) If you would like to use hsdpa/edge/gprs again you will have to change it to as it was before.

Got a brand new HD2 and each time I install NoData, I get an error. What should I do to fix this please?
What's the error message you are getting?

Even better, you can use Dial-up Enabler/Disabler: works like nodata but interface is a little better and is more user friendly ;-)

Pls note that with nodata, you disable the internet connection but, if the connection is active while disabling it, you still need to end it manually after exiting nodata.
This sounds weird I know...
With dial-up enabler/dsabler it is a lot easier as you will see two connections: one is the internet connection configured on your phone and the other is the current active connection, and you can disable them at the same time.
In addition it does not have annoying confirmation messages on disabling and exiting

HD2 connection problem
Connect your HD2 to your computer and transfer the cad file to your mobile.
Find the file on your phone using File Explorer (on the phone).
Double click on it and follow the instructions.
Then go to Start and locate the nodata programme.
Start it and disable what you want.
I disabled the Orange (in my case) internet connection and WAP.
In my case it is crucial that I donet't g automatic access to internet services when I roam because I am on a PAYG tariff.
£20 last me up to three months normally with a different phone (SIC) and since I started using my HD2 my last top up lasted me less than a week.
It's a rip-off!
Once beaten, twice shy...
I won't be caught again!
Hope this helps

Hi
Without going through every application how can I setup the connection options to only automatically connect when wifi is available or when docked. Idealy I would like to be prompted to connect via GPRS or 3g network? Any reg hacks on this one?

GPRS connection disable or prompt
hi, I'm having the same issue as above...would like to connect to GPRS manually only.
anyone !??!
me to, i am only on a limited plan for gprs/3g and the costs are quite high 2c p kb.
i use wifi at home a lot, so usually not a problem, but dodgy activesyncs to exchange server, or accidentally opening IE auto connects 3g gprs without prompting.
Any hacks, or software that anybody knows about.
I also need this, i ran my bill up without knowing/wanting to

I have changed my default IE page to "about:blank" - at least it means that IE doesn't go off trying to load a page by default that I'm most likely not interested in, but it also prevents it from connecting GPRS/3G should you start it by accident.
Cheers,
Steve.
Has anyone had any luck with this? I also am on an expensive tariff and unwanted connections prove costly. I have not yet found the answer, but will keep you all posted if I stumble across a setting/hack.
Would also like some tips on this, dont know whats dialling up 3g, but everytime i looked at my phone it was bloody connected grrrr.
Im also intressted, i need like a on/off button for the gprs. My damn egress updates my blogs/rss streams all the time. I have disable autoupdate in egress but it still wants to update sometimes :/
I've found nothing yet and have resorted to removing my GPRS settings until sorted.
I will crack open C# and attempt my first PDA utility - with the aim being to prevent GPRS/GSM from connecting unless something is manually toggled. Wish me luck

What does this cab file do exactly? Does it give you an option to manualy connect or does it turn GPRS off completely? Plus where can we find the option to turn it ON if we can?
One more thing please, can I install this cab file on my O2 XDA Exec without any conflicts since it was made for T-Mobile?
I am not 110% but I believe it appears in a number of carrier ext roms, and just stops GPRS from being attached all the time (like an idle disconnect perhaps?)
When you want GPRS, then you can connect by starting the application you want (ie : Internet Explorer) and GPRS kicks in.
Hope it helps.

Hello everybody.
I would my phone to disconnect after a set period of time from GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA or whatever else.
I tried registry hack, as mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377873.
I tried HD tweak and GS-SOFT tweak too. In every case I noticed that the registry key change effectively, but unfortunately the connection remains active.
Any solution?
Thanks in advance
Hello,
i have the same behavior, i tried GBSOFT and GPRS auto-disconnect, after the installation i can see that cachetime is 600 seconds in the registry and my connection is not closed after 5 minutes so I don't know how to stop it.
Sometimes the radio signal icon is not changed back to a G but the connection is really closed.

I have used HD Tweak and it works perfectly. What I did find however if you set up e-mail to check about the same amount of time as the disconnect it will never disconnect or reconnects pretty clost to disconnecting. So watch the software times for connecting to retrieve data, that will force a reconnect and then another wait to disconnect.
I am having exactly the same issue.
i have also tried changing the setting in advanced config and tweak HD but still nothing. very annoying!
If in POutlook I choose the option to download e-mail once in a day, how can I change the time of retrieval?

what schedule do you have it set at for it to work? i've tried to get email to check every 15 and 30 mintues and HD Tweak to disconnect after 1 minute and 5 minutes and just about every combination of them both and none of them will get the phone to disconnect data connection after retrieving email....help!!!
Yes, it seems new roms aren't compatible with these tweaks, did someone manage to do it? It sure is a battery drainer! :x

Then set sleep mode to whatever you want the delay to be before it closes the data connection.

Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?
Hi - I cant seem to get this to work correctly.
I have 2 email accounts set up to connect to and get new emails from every hour.
I have advanced config set up to disconnect my data connection after 1 min. But still it is very random weather it works or not. Sometimes yes most times no (still connected 2 hours later).
I have tried running HD tweak with the same settings but no luck. I have tried HDtweak on its own and both together.
I have also tried changing the time to 2mins or 5 mins.
Does anyone else have this problem? It just does not seem very reliable at all.
Any help would be amazing.
Thanks
anyone any ideas?
Still looking for some help on this one if anyone would be kind enough??
Well, I'm not aware of additional apps that resolves this automatically but the fastest way manually to disconnect is to use the Long End Press Button to disconnect.
Just a thought for the meantime....
Thanks but that is not really practical every 30 mins or so when your phone receives new emails. I cannot believe this amazing phone has such a strange short fall. For people with data shortages on their tarrifs this must be a nightmare?
I suggest to disable data connections in sleep mode. This can be fond under phone->settings->data
If data tab is not available, you can enable it using a cab called "Dutty enable data tab" or something similar (search the forums).
This cab works only for certain ROMs. I am using XNOR and it works perfectly.
Please note that your activesync will continue synchronising as programmed. and automatically disconnecting after.

Is this because you are worried about going over your internet allowance (500mbish) or because you want to save on battery? I'm a tad concerned about both and I would feel better if I could easily disable mobile web activating every so often.

I'm afraid the only way to actually disable data connections is NoData (i uploaded it for you). If you change your connection settings it won't connect via HSDPA or GPRS but it will connect via WAP.
If you install NoData simply make a shortcut to it and turn on data connections whenever you need them.

Why do you want to stop it connecting?
You are only charged for actual data transfer, not for time connected, and the amount of data used for FB and Twitter updates is relatively small anyway.
If you are being charged for all data I can understand your problem as you would want to stop some of the background downloads, otherwise there's really no point. The effect on battery life by disconnecting (as opposed to switching to GSM) is miniscule.

probably giving you a right headache now but, how do i do that ^
If you get charged for this, just tell the carrier that you accidently enabled it and didn't mean to use any data usage.

Hi, i have already used all methods discussed above. i have nodata and i also use the on/off switch to 3G network. The thing is that there IS a difference in battery times with all these... with 3G on and connection on battery lasts about 24 hours with minimal use. With 2G and connection on battery lasts 48 hours (2 days) with minimal use. With 2G and connection OFF from nodata it can hold 4 days on a single charge!
At least thats happening with my battery, coz i heard some stories about batteries holding 6-9 hours which never happened to me unless im using it fully for those 9 hours...
PS: by minimal usage i mean a couple of phone calls, a couple of sms and around 10-15 mins of internet connection either wifi or gprs just to update weather, twitter, email etc. The rest of its time, in sleep mode.

I'd say that 3MB in 19 hours without knowingly using any data is a bit of a concern
It may be wise to look into the updating schedules for location services, weather, twitter and Facebook (if you use them) and Stocks and Shares. The stocks and shares stuff does use a lot of data if you don't change the default settings.
For NoData- download the nodata.cab file to your phone then use File Explorer to locate it. Tap the filename to run it and this will install the program and place a shortcut in your Programs folder. You could then add the shortcut as one of the 9 links on the home page for easy access, to turn the data connection on & off at will

If those figures are typical for you, then you are doing very well! Most users see about 25-30% improvement by turning off 3G, and significantly less for turning data off.
It's important to realise that it is mostly data transfer that uses battery power, not the state of being connected or not. To go 4 days without any data transfer at all would mean a substantial reduction in overall device functionality, as you'd be simply using the installed programs in self contained mode- that may well limit the amount you even turn it on, so saving even more power. No email/web browsing/weather etc may well improve the battery life, but at what expense in terms of functionality?
As I mention above, it might be better to find out which programs are downloading data and at what intervals, and modify those settings to save both data use and battery life.
Not quite sure I am after the same as the op, but its close and I don't see the point in starting a new thread.

The HD2 and all Windows Mobile phones ought to use an open WiFi connection in preference to the phone signal without you having to do anything.
There are some provisos though:
It must be a valid WiFi connection, so check that the device can use the WiFi signal properly
The data session needs to be initiated after the WiFi is turned on, or it may continue using the phone signal. So, for web browsing, exit the browser, and restart it after turning on WiFi. Stuff such as location services, weather updates etc might continue using the phone, but the amount of data they use is relatively small unless you have a very short update interval.
Wonder if anybody has made a cab: "Connect ONLY and ONLY using WiFi"
*lol*
if there is - I will get it
