Hi, i have a very strange and unpleasant problem with my Hermes.. At home I am using my wifi connection to receive mails etc. My Hermes connects to the wifi network normally, but when I want to use internet connection (IE, Outlook..) it will start GPRS. I have to turn wifi of and back on to be able to use it. It is pretty annoying as you can imagine. Now I am using latest Tytn WWE rom, but i have had same problems with T-mobile rom.
My old Wizard is connecting normally and has never done something stupid like this Do anyone have some clue what may cause this strange behaviour?
Have you confirmed that the home WiFi connection is configured as 'Connects to: The Internet'? In comm manager turn off the WiFI then go into settings/connections/Network Cards and you will be presented with all the networks used or previously found by your TyTn wireless card.
Select you named home wireless connection and you will be presented with the screen "Configure Wireless Network". Make sure that the entry against "Connects to:" i sset to The Internet - then press OK (top right), then dismiss the settings windows.
Try the connection again - it worked for me a while back. If already set at "connects to the Internet" then try deleting the settings and creating the entry again: press and hold on the connection (your home WiFi) then select "Remove Settings". Then turn on networked and set it up again remembering to select "connects to the Internet" when asked during the configuration of the WiFi connection. Of course you will again be prompted for a network key if you have a secure wireless router.
- if you all this then sorry but you didn't say. Hope it helps
I have already set it to connect to the internet few days ago. But i will try to remove those settings and do it again.. Hope it will solve the problem.
Thanks for your help. I'll report later..

Hi
I hear good things about Danielherrero's bandswitch app. This is a long thread and I think there are revisions along the way so best read through a sample of the pages:

Whether it will solve your particular issue I don't know - but worth a look?

Hmm.. I am already using that band switcher. Really a great program but unfortunatelly it cannot solve this issue.
But.. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel I've deleted my network settings and than set it again. And now it seems to be working! Hmm.. cannot be quite sure if it isn't just lucky day, but I've tested it more than 10 times and it seems to be OK.
Anyway... thanks for your help
Hopefully it will continue to work.
PS Is "cancer man" still alive or have the ciggies killed him off?
Mike
Glad to hear it worked OK. I too found it was teh only way to get mine initially working - since deleting and recreating the link it has worked OK (3 mths plus)
Aaah.. I heard that cancer man is still alive. But.. trust no one Hope he will not follow the Marlboro Man..
And by the way.. After few hours it still seems to be working. Thanks guys!!
Out of a month of use it has happened to me only once. I just turned off wifi then turned it back on. I believe the tytn is not recognising that it has a valid Internet connection.

I don't know what is going on but when I'm at home, I woud usually be connected to UMTS/GPRS. Of course, having wifi at home, I would rather use that (speedwise) but when I turn on wifi, I notice that I would be connected to both WIFI and UMTS/GPRS.
FIRST QUESTION:
Which am I utilizing? UMTS/GPRS or WIFI?
Now, considering that I "THINK" I'm using wifi, I would launch PIE and to go to a website, it takes forever...... The task bar keeps saying locating. I have to literally wait and wait before I get to the website.
SECOND QUESTION:
What is going on here?
At any rate, if I turn WIFI off and I'm just connected to GPRS/UMTS, I can browse using PIE without any problems. No "locating..." etc. or waiting.
Please help!

While on wifi you can temporarily turn off GPRS using connections hard key below on/off hard key. Just tap on the icon that looks like a pda with two arrows. When off wifi reconnect GPRS using connections in settings menu.
Mike.
Ok. goodie. I was able to shut off the GPRS.
Now I launched internet explorer. The only connection that I'm connected to is my wifi. Still the taskbar is saying "Locating.." taking forever to go anywhere.

At least one step in right direction. I'm not so hot on the slow connection. Assume ports and proxies are setup ok.
Perhaps others have some ideas.

In Start>Settings>connections there is an option "edit my proxy server" and within this lots of options.
I will have a different provider from you so don't know what settings should be there. I am also not an expert on this so hopefully someone who is will jump in with some info on this.
One person I was posting with queried why their wifi connection needed any proxy settings as they were not connecting through to their mobile operator but to their home broadband connection. However when they tweaked a setting here their Wifi suddenly started working. See Mariete's last post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284867
We need someone with more knowledge!! Anyone?
Mike
Well for one thing, there is no setting for proxy server. Even then when i did find anything to do with proxy server, it is not even activated.
Next..
Phew...Someone else with the same EXACT issue. I was on with Cingular/HTC support today and they really didn't help. I will keep trying new things and checking back to this thread to see if anyone else thinks of an idea.
I have a Apple Airport (802.11g) with no security settings. I have a few laptops on the network and friends who can connect their laptops without any issues.
I actually got tired of this issue. I downloaded and bought netfront. It was something I was going to buy anyway. So after installing it, I tried it again and this time, it goes to the website flawlessly. It must be something to do with IE.
On the other hand, I'm having some issues with shutting down the GPRS again. It keeps turning on automatically.

everyone make sure they arent on their providers connection that utilizes the proxy.. i dont know about any provider except cingular.. when using wifi stay off MEDIA NET.. everyone's best bet is to make sure they are on the connection for MY ISP, go to settings, connections, connections, advanced, select networks, change the drop down to MY ISP. also make sure wifi is off before doing this, after changing to my isp then turn wifi back on and you should be ok...

I will give this a try. Thanks. I will keep everyone posted to my hopeful success.
Absolutely fantastic!!!
Hi All,
First of all, let me tell you that I was also suffering from the same problem of MediaNet proxy settings. I've done the same changes asked by "shogunmark" which really sounds good logicaly. And my wifi connection started working miraculously! Yes, it is miracle for me as I am trying to connect to WiFi for last 3 days! Thanks a lot again...
I got it to work as well. However, I couldn't use "My ISP" connection as it was pointing to a Cingular domain. I ended up creating a new one called Home and it works fine. I do have a question. Under Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks...
What does everyone have selected in both drop downs? I had to select my new Home connection for both to get WIFI to work.
that cingular domain/AP is only used for edge/3G data with no proxy.. this is why this is used for wifi.. theoretically MEdia net would work if it didnt have the proxy... but the phone doesnt look at the AP name when on wifi, only the proxy, you shouldnt have needed to create a new connection!

ok, so I should be able to keep Media Net on the top drop down and My ISP on the second drop down? I assume I should just be able to use the Comm Manager to switch between WIFI and the Cingular Data Connections?

Mmmm... First turn on WLAN - one way is use the button below the On/Off hard button on the side of the case. This opens a screen that shows your connections. One of them looks like an aerial with waves coming from it. It should not have a cross on it. If it has, tap it to turn on Wireless mode.
Move within 10metres of your WLan Router.
Your device in a short time should automatically detect the WLAN and give you a pop up message. You will be offered the chance to connect to it and to enter any codes/keys for your LAN.
If you still have problems there is another little app. that might help so let me know.

I assume of course you were wanting to use WLAN not GPRS.
If so you need to ensure GPRS is switched of, else it just keeps getting in before the WLAN has a chance to connect.
There is a recent thread called UMTS/GPRS and WLAN switching or something like that, that has a lot of discussion on how to do this. Presume Opera connected fine on WLAN.
From the sound of it though ravenclaw has not managed to get any connection on WLAN.

I'm puzzled by your WLAN problem. I assume you get no pop-up saying WLAN detected?? You could try downloading the hitchhiker application and see if that helps. http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ remember you also need the .Netframework as well http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&displaylang=en
As for the clock, I'm sure I saw a post (and a solution) somewhere on this forum not so long ago about this skipping time zones thing. Perhaps somebody remembers it and where it is??
Mike
ill try! but one stupid question how i can shutdown this machina? not pressing 5sec power button (cause it will disalbe changes... but like normal way? )
how i can reset this damm thing?!? ... doing it hard way...
Er..I think maybe you need to take a few steps back, then sit down and read the manual?
The on / off button is top right side, just a press will put device into standby (suspend) a long press turns the device completely off.
The reset button is the small hole at the bottom just to the right of the IR lens - poke it with the stylus to soft reset. As for hard reset - havent a clue, never had to do it.
yeah time thing solved
and phone reseted
I've been having a bugger of a time with the Wi-Fi on my 8525. I keep getting a response that the WEP key is incorrect. I was able to connect once, and have since deleted my settings that the Wi-Fi network, but nothing I'm trying seems to get me connected.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
I had a problem with my Wifi working when I first got the phone. But since I wanted to SuperCid the phone I had to downgrade the IPL to do so. I re flashed to the same Cingular 1.34 with IPL 1.06. Since then I have not had any problems with the Wifi.

Here's a thought. Why not try the Hitchhiker application. It tends to get round quite a few issues in set up. Also once you've got it working and connected to Wifi you can close it down if you wan to and you'll find it has saved correct settings for your normal way of connecting to wifi. Another benefit is that you can cut the wep key from a text document and paste it into the box it gives you (saves a lot of hassle whenever you need to re-enter the key - which in my case is 28 letters digits long!!) WM5 box as you may have discovered does not allow wep pasting!!
You need to have .netframework installed as well byt the link I give you also has a link for that as well:

i recently got att 8525 but i havent able to connect wifi with my home network. it asks for wep key, then shows connecting to network and after a while shows wrong network key...no success so far...i even tried the abive hitchhiker sf and all but no luck...has anyone come up with any solution??? i had np connecting 8125 b4...!!!
btw i use wm5 and the most recent att rom update posted on htc site...
hoping for some solution...
I have similar problem too with my cingular 8525. I unlock it to work with t-mobile and also upgrade to wm6 . Now, I can not connect to my home wlan. If I click on wlan, it show my wireless network. But if I click on internet explorer, it show me the default internet window explorer with at & t and window mobile icons. when I click on either one, it take me to media net log in screen. help me
ok, i dont know how but my wifi started working last night!!! b4 it always looked for IP address and eventually disconnects b4 connecting to home network. so i installed "hitchhiker" but no luck either...so i uninstalled and then tried but this time it said connected to network and as soon as i open IE, it disconnects...it looked like wifi connects but then disconnects or timeout due to power settings, so i changed power settings under wifi settings to best performance and now it just connects right away...

Thank You Thank you Thank You. I've been at this for a few days now. It would have to be that simple.
Just remember you need to run the remove proxy cab file if proxy is has been set to use GPRS/WAP. Also make sure the right network interface is selected - like work uses 802.11 etc..
Hi I have a wifi issue and can't find any other related posts. I can connect to wifi networks however when I use IE, Opera or Skype the programs seem to time out and say can not find network although the icon and conections tab say I connected. I have check all the posts and even the manual and I seem to have all the settings correct. Has anyone seen this before, have overlooked something? any help to get me connected and surfing would be great.
thanks and happy new year to all members

I solved similar problem with my HTC Trinity by changing WLAN Power Save Mode from "Best Battery" to "Best Performance".
i tried that and it still didn't work,
thanks
What kind of network are you connected to? if you are on a home network that has an ISP which requires a login, then that could be the problem. A friend of mine has a setup like that where even with the wireless router he still logs on via the PC and not the Router.
worked for me

I have been having the same problem since moving off the Dopod rome I got the phone with.
Thanks for speaking up. I can finally wifi again. :-D
hi all,
Ifigured it out, or at least I got it working. Not really sure what I did, but as people suggested I changed everything to connect to "work" and this seemed to do it, I want to try connecting to a couple other networks to see If I can figure out exactly what i did right.
thanks for the help, Mike
Hi guys. If you don't remember me - here's my story in a nutshell. I got a 8525 about a week ago. Since day one I tried and tried and tried but never managed to get the wifi working... (as you can imagine I am beyond desperate at this point)
Anyway last night I got thinking and decided to give it another stab. I hard reset, messed with the settings again...and this time manage to get a little further. My phone is now showing me as "connect to network", only problem is I get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change connection settings, tap Settings." each time I try to access anything internet related. I know I'm close especially since I'm actually connected now, I think it's just AT&T's rom doing everything it can to get me to use their networks (I'm on T-Mobile and don't have a dataplan anyway...).
Anyway can you guys think of what the problem might be? I'm so close I can taste it! Thanks.....
Bump... Anyone home?
where did you get your 8525? my wifi on my 8525 works perfectly fine, have u tried upgrading to WM6?
I have WM6 already. I got it off ebay. Everything is perfectly fine with it, it just doesn't want to use the wifi connection to get online.
Try a hard rest.
my 1st 8525 i got off ebay, and it worked great up until a few weeks ago, when the screen stopped functioning it just turned white, i called AT&T and they sent me a new 1 i just got it this morning and now, i cant make calls >.> it will ring then my phone will say i have no service when i have full service and the call will end. but my wifi is fine... did u use the WM6 upgrade that was released by AT&T
No thanks re: the hard reset. I've already done that... If I can't figure this out I'm going to sell my phone and steer clear of ppc phones. I like it, but I bought it for wifi and this is just getting ridiculous. I have tried everything. I've spent hours and hours on this. I've reset my router god knows how many times, played with security settings, reset my phone over and over to start over.....
The worst part now is that I know it's connected. The wifi aspect is fine. It's just the stupid phone not wanting to use the wifi connection for the internet.
Maybe someone with a 8525 and a Linksys router can post ALL of their wireless related settings for me.
Ekh
Yes I used the AT&T update.....
i use wifi and my linksys router, the 8525's range isnt that great u need to be within a few feet of the router to get good reception, im about 30 feet from mine and i get 2 Wifi signal bars and an ok speed. but try this
Start > Programs > Proxy Manager > Disable Proxy
then try to use your wifi, then go back and restore the proxy when your done, i think some 1 told me to do that because att uses that so u can use their internet service or sumthin
Thanks but I'm way ahead of you. I've already tried every piece of advice I've come across on xda. My last hope is someone elses detailed settings.
is your network passworded by a WEP or TKIP ?
It's WPA... My device has the password, and I added the MAC to my router table. It's connecting to the router/wifi...
...it's just that my device won't use the connection
* Sigh * Looks like another one of my please help me posts has gone dead...again...

Your problem may be one of the following:
1. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "work" and programs are set to use an internet connection.
2. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "internet" and programs are set to use a work connection.
Nope that's not it. But it does remind me of something so thanks. I deleted all the connections seeing as I don't have a dataplan... I made a new connection called "Wifi". BUT, it's not like I can specify any connection for it so it's just blank (no connection specified). By this I mean the options for a connection are:
bluetooth, cellular line, cellular line (GPRS, 3G), Generic IrDA, Hanes...COM1. No option for wireless...
Does that help?
Check that your router is set to allow connections by devices with 802.11b, which the Hermes uses. Most default to 802.11g only.
It's set for b and g
Helloooo...?
Hallelujah!!!!!
People, I have WIFI!!!
Thanks to everyone who tried to give a helping hand... It's really appreciated.
For future reference to those who are suffering from the same problem - this is what seemed to fix it... I entered google into IE via it's IP address rather than it's name (open command prompt, ping google.com...). To my surprise the page quickly loaded. I then instantly realized that the problem was with the DNS settings. I opened up "Wi-Fi" in settings, went to the "Network Adapters" tab at the bottom and entered in the DNS addresses for "IEEE 802.11b/g...". If you need help with this just PM me (I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this topic now).
I thought I was never going to get online. There IS a god!
