VERY annoying email bug(s) - HD2 General

I have set up my own personal email account in the HD2 - not outlook, just a standard personal email.
Configured all well and good; works fine except for the very poor implementation by HTC which gives the user absolutely no audio / visual conformation that your messages have actually been sent successfully....?!
However, I have it set to retrieve new emails from my server every 15 minutes, but it does this so erratically that I can't trust it. Today I was wondering why no email had come through by 1pm, so I manually pressed 'send and receive' and 8 important emails came through from 8.40am!
So I decided to check the mail settings (again) to make sure it wasn't just me being dense. That's when I discovered an even more annoying bug -
Every time I access my POP3 email account's settings the HTC automatically changes my incoming mail account user name from whatever I saved last time, to just the first 3 letters of the user name.
ie I put in a user name of [email protected] and the next time I view the settings there's only HTC in the username box.
It gets worse still, everytime I also check the outgoing server details, at the same time it also defaults the 'outgoing (SMTP) mail server' to 'use the same username and password for sending email' IN-SPITE of the fact that I have now set this up 15 times and saved it with a different user name and password!! AGHHH!
So, it's very unreliable in retrieving emails (over wifi or 3G or GPRS) and the email account settings need re-setting up every time I access the account settings to check why they are not working...again.
I am very quickly losing faith in this bit of tech, this is my second HD2 handset and it's freezing and crashing more in a few days that my old 3G did in a year. So frustrating!
Does anyone have any idea what's up with the email issue?
Cheers.

Yep, I've seen the first problem you have, where part of the username (more specifically, everything from the ampersand onwards) are truncated. This, and presumably the other problems, seem to be down to the HTC email configuration program trying to be too clever. If you go to Pocket Outlook, by tapping on Inbox when you're on the email Sense tab, then go to Menu -> Tools -> Options, and set your accounts up there, they stick. Annoying bug, but circumventable reasonably painlessly.

I have no Tools in Menu of the Inbox
I only got the account setup when in the sense tab and there i only get to the htc account settings. So how to I get to the outlook settings?

I also had this problem with it not automatically syncing my hotmail account as specified.
The newer 148 ROM seems to address this BUT introduces a number of irratating bugs along with it - depends if you can live with them or not....

Windows live and pop3?

Hello again fellow Touch 3g owners,
So ive come across this article and i was wondering if anyone has tried this. Im not able to try it with the standard email application for the touch 3g. I have been using the windows live application to sync my emails but i dont like it because it only syncs emails i havent read and i think its kinda stupid to have to open another application just to sync ur emails. Would gladly appreciate any input on this.
EDIT:
Ok so ive got it working by following one of the comments of the article. The email program automatically detects settings for these 3 domains: live.com, hotmail.com and msn.com. You do not want this to happen, so what you have to do is enter a fake domain like [email protected] and then enter the settings found in the article. Remember to tick the box for ssl and authentication for both ingoing and outgoing in the advanced settings. when ur done you can change the accountname to ur real email. this worked for me (accessed my emails, havent tried sending yet but i dont think that will be a problem).
just an update
So ive got it working, however its not to my liking. It works great exept for a few things. One is that i cant preview the messages in touchflo, it shows when and from who but not a preview of the content. Second is that mails already read elsewhere it downloads as unread. And last but not least, it takes a long time to sync. So if any of you has found a workaround pleas let me know.
Why don't you just configure all your pop3 in the mail tab. There you can easily and quickly send/receive or sync.

I configured my mails (including hotmail) using the Mail Tab. Once configured it gives the icons on the right as to which accounts I am looking at. And when I tap Menu - Send/receive, the individual icons (accounts) shows how many e-mails have come in (still unread) for each account (if any).
Follow this link http://www.ghacks.net/2009/01/22/enable-hotmail-pop3-in-all-countries/ for hotmail configuration.
When first configuring, do not put [email protected]hotmail.com, put something else (e.g. [email protected]zzxxyy.com). Configure manually, do not let it search. The rest follow instructions from above link. Once completed, then update - which gives fail. Then Tap Menu-Tools-Options-tap the hotmail email acc - and input all the correct info from there (the actual account login name, password.) Tap send/receive... Wallllla !!!!

Well, it depends on the beholder. I configured it in less than 5 minutes, just once. Well that's the only way now, that I know and would like to share. Others may have a much more simpler, easier and less complicated way. I don't know.

Emails disappearing

I have searched for email problems but found none that describe my problem.
The problem is this.
1. Emails that have been read, but not deleted are removed from my HD2.
2. I get a notification that an email has been delivered. If i don't read that email, pick up my phone and so on. I can return to my phone knowing that i should have a message to read and find none.
I believe that what may be happening is that my emails are getting cleared down on every send/receive schedule.
Can anyone assist?
I am not saving messages to the SIM card currently.
I had that problem.
I guess that messages are deleted from hd2 when they are deleted from mail server
In other words, when you download them with computer for example, where you probably set it to: delete messages from server after they are downloaded, they are deleted from hd2 after next send,receive...
So I guess that these emails you would like to read them on your hd2 are deleted because in the mean time you or some software deleted them from email server
I find this happens if I empty the deleted items folder in Outlook on the Windows PC to which my HD2 is synched.
Disappearing email
On HTC Touch HD, when I wanted to save an email, I have deleted it. In that way it stayed preserved in the "deleted items" folder.
However, on HD2 email is disappearing from that folder also, after it has been deleted on the server.
Is there any way to save e-mails permanently on HD2? Except moving it to the "drafts" folder...

find the email options screen that lets you set the storage location, and on that page is the option to control when and how to empty the deleted items which by default is set to automatic on connect disconnect.

Thank you for your reply, samsamuel!
I have tried to find an email option screen that you are referring to, but I just don't see it anywhere.
Could you please guide me to it?
TNX
sure, from home screen go mail -inbox -menu -scroll down to tools -options switch to storage tab and there it is.
Oooops, I 've missed the scroll down part.

hehe you aren't the first

Ok, switched to "Manually".
What I do (just for testing purposes):
1- I'm at home and using Outlook 2003, so from one email account of mine I send a short email to THE email account which is also set up in my HD2.
2- Once I see the email has been delivered, I force my HD2 to refresh and I receive the email.
3- Now I refresh Send/Receive in my Outlook. Fine, I receive the message too.
4- Finally, I refresh again (Send/Receive) in my HD2...
5- The email I had on my HD2 screen, is gone. If I go to my InBox folder, there's nothing there.
What's wrong? Although I know the server deletes the messages, why can't my HD2 keep a message that had already been received?
Cheers,

thats because when you check the account from the mobile, it leaves a copy of the email on the server, and creates a copy in your phones inbox. When you check from Outlook on the pc, it physically downloads the email, thus removing it from the server, so when you check again from the phone, the inbox is empty.
You can alter outlook to not remove messages, but you end up with all your mail stored on your pop server, and the isp might not like it if it grows too large.

Hi there samsamuel. Thanks for your answer.
I understand this behaviour, but what I can't possibly understand is why the email is not kept in my HD2: I get the notification, I click to download it, hence, in that very moment a copy of the email is in my device. Then, why can't it be kept in my device if it was already there!?
It's fine if later on, it refreshes and it detects that there's no email in the server's inbox....but please, don't delete me the copy that I already had in my device! It has no sense!
Isn't there an option to keep these copies?
And yes, you're right, I don't want to alter my outlook, that would be a nightmare.
Cheers!
No choice for that?
Are you all happy with this email behaviour?
..I'm asking because there seems not to be a solution for this...
Up...
I'm having the same problem man... it's giving me the ****S. How do I put android on this PoS HD2?!
figured it out...
Open inbox > Menu (scroll down to tools) > Options > Click your email account > skip through all the bull**** until you get to the "Email Setup, automatic send / receive & dowload messages" drop down boxes screens, Hit "Advanced Settings", then change the 'When deleting messages:' from delete them off the server to keep them on the server.
Stupid WinMo.
Try an email account that supports IMAP. Some providers allow POP3 or IMAP so you might not have to change accounts.
I don't like the way IMAP looks in Outlook, but it works much better across several devices. I have two PCs and a couple of phones. No matter where I am, each device always reflects what is ACTUALLY in my email online. It took a little adjusting to, but I think it's much better. In Active Sync/Windows Mobile Devie Center, I no longer have Outlook set to synchronise with my device. Try signing up for a free Gmail account and try it on your phone and in Outlook on a PC and see what you think...
Somehow found what seems to be the problem...
inbox - tools - options - accounts tab - choose your account - edit account setup - click next until:
Automatic Send/Receive:
[Every 60 minutes]
Download messages:
[From past 3 days]
Change this from past 3 days to All messages and voila!
It's seems to save space by providing you only with latest e-mails. Make sure to do the Storage options mentioned earlier!

Help: deleting mail while keeping it on the server

Hi! I have the following problem ( not directly HD2 related):
I've configured my hd2 to retrieve my mail from my yahoo account each hour ( don't really need push services) and it works flawlessly. The only problem is that when I delete a mail on the phone, it also syncs with the server and the mail gets deleted there too. I'd like to have the option of deleting it only on the phone, and keeping it on the server, is that possible?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, go to mail, enter the inbox.
menu - scroll to tools - options select account
then send/receivce schedula
advanced settings
"when deleting messages:" and change to the appropriate option
Thanks a lot, can't believe I didn't see the "Tools" menu (t'was because I didn't scroll down ).
Wait, I don't see an advanced settings tab at all...
i also would like to know how to do this.....
i use Hotmail for my email..... I have the account set up and working on my phone, but there is no Advanced settings tab available, to select "deleting messages" options ???
is this just not possible to keep messages on the server, using free online email accounts such as Hotmail, Yahoo, gMail ???
PS: I have no idea what these things mean, but I have heard the terms before regarding email account.... is it something to do with being a POP or IMAP account ???

E-Mail Settings -- How Do I leave messages on server?

My TP2 e-mail settings allow me to leave the message on the server (POP3) when I delete them from the phone. However, my HD2 doesn't have such a setting as far as I can see. Anyone know how to do this? I also posted this question in the T-Mo support forum, but haven't heard anything.... This is very important to me, and if indeed there is no such setting on the HD2, I will return the phone.
This is for pop3 or imap but don't know how it is for exhange server etc.
Inbox>
menu>tools>options....
then select the account you want to "edit"
then select edit account setup>next>next>next>next>next
how ever many "next" it takes to get to Automatic Send/Receive and on bottom of the screen is "Advanced Settings"
that is where the option you are looking for is.
That is how it is on my phone anyway.
Good luck
I posted this yesterday for you on the T-Mo site:
Start key> Email>Menu>Options> select email account >Edit Account Setup>click Next 5 times, then Advanced Settings. The next screen will let you select whether to delete them from the server or move them to server trash. I have all of my email accounts set to delete them from server and when I delete emails, I do a Send/Receiver and have had no problems with my emails deleting. If I have it set to move to server trash, it leaves them on the server.
you can skip about 5 button presses by just selecting send/receive schedule rather than Edit Account Setup. From Send/Receive menu select Advanced Settings and you just arrived at the same point.
True, but I thought perhaps there were other options that the poster might also want to change or review. But your way is the most direct.

Problems configuring IMAP/POP on Windows Mobile 6.5

Hi. When trying to configure Gmail on my WM 6.5 device, it automatically chooses the IMAP mode which leaves me only with the options:
=> Once the messages deleted from the phone:
1 - Delete them from the server
2 - Put them in server's bin
(3 - Keep them in the Inbox doesn't exist).
I actually don't want any action to take place (once some messages deleted), cause it doesnt mean if a message is too heavy or unneeded to keep on the phone that i want it to be deleted completely. Thats completely absurd and a major unexpected drawback on WM 6.5. Yet, i can't get the option to configure my Gmail as POP, to avoid this problem. In the same time i can configure mailboxes on other servers as POP and get the right options. Those are servers that WM 6.5 doesnt have pre-loaded settings for (meaning all mainstream servers fall under the IMAP rule). I just dont see why for Gmail the system forces you to select IMAP with those restrictive useless options. I tried deactivating IMAP in my mailbox but it doesn't change anything. Im sick of that.
What the issue is here about? Is there any patch for this problem which i consider to be really serious?
Thank you.
To bypass Windows Mobile's bullheaded insistance on choosing Imap for gmail, yahoo, etc email accounts:
When you do Menu-->Tools-->"New Account" DO NOT enter a gmail or yahoo email address on the first E-mail Setup page. Just use [email protected] for the address, enter your real password, hit next.
Next screen has "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the internet". This is what you are looking for. Uncheck the box and hit next.
Choose "Custom Domain" for your e-mail provider. Hit next.
Enter foobar (or anything actually) for E-mail Provider Domain. Hit next.
Now you can fix things up and enter relevant data on following screens. It will let you set your incoming and outgoing servers and choose pop or imap. Just make sure to correct any entries where it used the earlier bogus data you fed it to fill things in (like the user name)
Be sure to fill in "Display name" exactly the way you want it to appear in pocket outlook - it CAN NOT be changed after you create the new account. If you mess that up you have to start over from scratch, and any emails already downloaded in that account will be deleted from the device.
Works on HTC Tilt2 (AT&T) w/ stock WM6.5
