Hello again fellow Touch 3g owners,
So ive come across this article and i was wondering if anyone has tried this. Im not able to try it with the standard email application for the touch 3g. I have been using the windows live application to sync my emails but i dont like it because it only syncs emails i havent read and i think its kinda stupid to have to open another application just to sync ur emails. Would gladly appreciate any input on this.
EDIT:
Ok so ive got it working by following one of the comments of the article. The email program automatically detects settings for these 3 domains: live.com, hotmail.com and msn.com. You do not want this to happen, so what you have to do is enter a fake domain like and then enter the settings found in the article. Remember to tick the box for ssl and authentication for both ingoing and outgoing in the advanced settings. when ur done you can change the accountname to ur real email. this worked for me (accessed my emails, havent tried sending yet but i dont think that will be a problem).
just an update
So ive got it working, however its not to my liking. It works great exept for a few things. One is that i cant preview the messages in touchflo, it shows when and from who but not a preview of the content. Second is that mails already read elsewhere it downloads as unread. And last but not least, it takes a long time to sync. So if any of you has found a workaround pleas let me know.
Why don't you just configure all your pop3 in the mail tab. There you can easily and quickly send/receive or sync.

I configured my mails (including hotmail) using the Mail Tab. Once configured it gives the icons on the right as to which accounts I am looking at. And when I tap Menu - Send/receive, the individual icons (accounts) shows how many e-mails have come in (still unread) for each account (if any).
Follow this link http://www.ghacks.net/2009/01/22/enable-hotmail-pop3-in-all-countries/ for hotmail configuration.
When first configuring, do not put hotmail.com, put something else (e.g. zzxxyy.com). Configure manually, do not let it search. The rest follow instructions from above link. Once completed, then update - which gives fail. Then Tap Menu-Tools-Options-tap the hotmail email acc - and input all the correct info from there (the actual account login name, password.) Tap send/receive... Wallllla !!!!

Well, it depends on the beholder. I configured it in less than 5 minutes, just once. Well that's the only way now, that I know and would like to share. Others may have a much more simpler, easier and less complicated way. I don't know.

I had the same issue with my Polaris. I can't find the resource that told me how to fix it, so I'll just tell you:
1) when creating the new account, DO NOT enter your gmail address in the first page of the wizard; instead type something like so that the wizard doesn't auto setup for gmail.
2) point your browser to this gmail help page and use the information from the Standard Instructions section.
3) two VERY IMPORTANT things to remember!! I learned them the hard way
a) be SURE to disable IMAP and enable POP. The link to do this is in Step 1 of the Standard Instructions. Before enabling POP, though, if it says POP is already enabled, DISABLE IT FIRST, then click [Save Changes] then go back to the page and THEN enable POP and [Save Changes].
b) remember to ENABLE SSL for both the incoming and outgoing mail servers. you have to use the port numbers provided, but there's no place to enter them, so enter them like this in the server name fields:
POP3 server name: pop.gmail.com:995
SMTP server name: smtp.gmail.com:465 -or- smtp.gmail.com:587
4) after the wizard is finished and your new account is created, go back and edit the account and enter your correct gmail email address, and it will allow you to change it without goofing things up.
Hope this helps! I have to do this every time I change ROM's, which seems to be every few weeks these days, and the above instructions work for me.
Cheers!! --Jesse
Should THIS INSTRUCTION not be the one for setting up an imap google account on WM6?
I didnt try it myself til now cos my HD will only arrive tomorrow morning. So no garantee if it will work or not. Only looked up in the Gmail Help Section for Settings for a WM6 Client over imap.
Give me some feedback if I am wrong.

You can go to the Gmail help page and get all the settings to set up a pop account also. I used pop for years but now that I've tried IMAP, I'll never go back because to me it is so much better. I can see all of my emails sent and received on all of my computers, no more manual syncing. Anyway I guess you have your reasons for preferring pop over imap. Good luck.

Never knew it worked that way. I prefer POP because it just seems to take way too long to check for new IMAP mail because it has to load in all the folders, then load in all the headers, then load any new messages. I thought IMAP was supposed to be the new better way, but for me it just seems to take much longer, and I only use gmail on my mobile and from web browsers. I'm open to suggestion, though, especially if I'm missing something that would benefit me

You're right that it does take longer to get imap mail on a PPC than pop, but the difference is only 1 or 2 seconds.
Benefit example: I am at home on my laptop and send out several emails with information that I found on the web etc. I then go out and have my phone with me, I forget something that needs to be added to the already sent emails. Gmail IMAP allows me to look in my sent folder and reference the emails. Gmail also will fetch emails from other accounts so that you have them all in one place. You can even reply to emails from other accounts and have them sent out showing that they came from the original account. I promise I don't work for Google I just like my IMAP email.

That does sound handy! I appreciate you taking the time to answer. As for gmail performing 'proxy' services for your other email accounts, that sounds way too cool. I'm going to look into that... Thanks again.. Jesse
Just a note on Gmail Imap: In the U.S. Imap version only for the moment you can activate Advanced Imap Controls in Labs, and then choose the Imap folders you want to see under Settings. And in Forwarding and POP/Imap you can configure to acutally immediately delete messages, not flag them for deletion. In order to see and test the Labs offerings you can change your default language to English, and revert back if you like.
Can someone please give me some simple instructions on how to set up googlemail push. I have googlemail set up and email frequency box is set at 5 minutes, it gives no option for push. I have not found the option to sync contacts etc. Maybe I am having another senior moment!! Thank you.
Check out the beta section on google sync website -That should give you the info you need. I have not got it to work yet though.

if you create an new email account, don't select the gmail option. You need to create an active sync (exchange) connection... then you have push mail. instructions are indeed on the google sync beta page....
Many thanks, I will head over there now
in activesync app, type your gmail email and password, server is m.google.com ., go thru options for cal, contacts, and email, frequency, and peak times.

dont think so. I prefer using activesync for google contacts and calendar, and setting up gmail but without push in the email inbox. You should get email noises, no matter if both are there. Go to home screen, settings tab, menu, all settings, sounds and notifications, tab sounds, scroll to new email and check options are ticked as needed.
I can't get the push to work despite having hard reset the phone a couple of times. ( now got to get my music and photo's back on)
Contacts not so bad as they will sync with myphone.
I think I am going to have to go back to normal google syncing every 5 minutes. unless someone has another solution.
Thanks for your help

Can you maybe post a small howto on the setup (srver and client site)?
I think that this would help a lot of users who would like to have this!
If I use GMail, but use my own domain instead of @gmail.com, can I still do Push Email?

Your provider will need to support this.
It's NOT a normal thing they do.
Only "free" push providers that I know of are Gmail and Hotmail (live)

Sure!
This is what worked for me after lots of attempts.
I deleted the original IMAP googlemail account
Iwent to activesync
Put in my googlemail address ie
Password xxxxxxx ignore tha fact that it then adds extra digits.
Save password
leave domain name blank
username will come up as santa, this needs changing to
edit server will come up and this is m.google.com
Choose the data you want to sync
Choose schedule as items arrive
The forst sync I had to press send and receive thereafter it worked.
What was confusing me before was the fact that I had the phone charging in the computer as I set up, it would not sync until I unplugged it. After unplugging it only pushed new mail not the mail already on the server.
I hope this makes some sense I am very new to this.
Ok.. Looks easy. Did you set anything in your gmail account on the server?
Also. I'm not sure if thats your true e-mail address, but if so, and if you do not like spam, you better remove it from your post!
Lot's of spam bots WILL get your e-mail address, and use it for sending spam to you!
Ok I managed to get it working after a bit, but syncing still seems slow. Also when I send a message from the phone it shows up in my mail client inbox anyway to stop this happening.

did anybody try to send a mail with some attachment to your gmail push account? When i get the mail on my device, i can see the attachment, however, i cannot open it or save it. When i click on the attachment it says downloading... but still cannot open or save it? does it work for you guys?
So,
in a first look, this question may seam as an waste of time.. but, two days ago, i went from e71 to HD2... i find hd2 excelent phone, but some features are not as good as i suposed that would be.
first of all, it took me TWO (?!) days to configure e mail, but man would say it is not a rocket science... lol (i had that well known proxy problems, etc...)..
but now, i find VERY iritating the fact that e mails come to my phone with 5-20 (depends on don't know what...) delay?
I use GMAIL, and in a nut shell - my settings are - automatic every 5 minutes.
It is very strange, because my Nokia E71 was perfect, mail arrived SAME time on mobile and gmail....
what should i do to make it "100% push"?
thank you!
I don't know, but if it took you 2 DAYS to configure the e-mail and went thru proxy issues, it is very likely that at some point you misconfigured something and therefore, it's not working smoothly....
I say so because my gmail works just fine, as it should be. Perhaps you should just delete the account and set it up again from scratch.

thnx for answer.. but, today i went thru ROM update (to 1.48), and i set up whole mobile again (no backup), and same problem again.
i went thru auto setup, not manual, - "like as it should be done"..
if you want push then go through "Outlook" in the Email account wizard and set up your gmail account that way.
if you've set it to check every 5minutes, then it's going to give you a delay.
you can add push gmail through active sync - add server source, through device center or ActiveSync on your pc or through 'data services' on the settings tab of HTC sense. instructions are outlined at Google sync services webpage, you could eh google that.

I don't think that's possible, I also want to add 2 accounts for push e-mail (Exchange and GMail)
As far as I know, you can only use one exchange account.
When you've added push gmail through active sync is there any way to rename the outlook account to Gmail ? Just looks a bit odd going to 'outlook' to read my gmails.

Thanks everyone in advance for any help you may give me.
I have just bought an HTC Desire and my company e-mail runs through MS Officelive (i.e. Hotmail/Windows Live for Business).
I have heard previous Android devices syncing with Hotmail (probably through 3rd party apps installed).
Does anyone know of a good email app that enables HTML etc. and syncs with Hotmail/Windows Live which isn't POP3 (which is terrible as it doesn't sync).
Tried Maildroid and it will only work over POP3 again (even though it says it works with Windows Live).
Would be great if there's a push one too!
Don't mind if it's a paid app either to get it working without POP3.
Any help?
Thank you again.
RE: MailDroid
Hi Urp,
MailDroid will work for it over IMAP if you have set the correct settings. Most people have POP3 so it defaults to that, but if you add in your username/pass and click manual setup, you will be able to add in your imap settings.
PM me if you need some help.
-Joe
P.S. I did not even know live supported IMAP
I tried Seven Beta and if kinda works with hotmail but is very buggy at the moment and support is lacking as it's only beta.
It may work better for you so give it a try
Sully
Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. Do you know the IMAP settings for Windows live then? Everywhere I've read said it isn't supported.
Thank you again guys!

RE: Windows Live
Right, that is what I thought. MailDroid works over POP3 for hotmail/live/msn etc. and will do a poll of the server. My understanding is that windows live mail means that the desktop client can access other IMAP accounts and not that Hotmail itself has IMAP.
You can get push mail by signing up for other companies (shangmail and maybe seven (not sure how seven does it)) and they will poll and get UIDs and then push to you. Essentially, they are polling and pushing from their application. Personally, I am biased, but I will tell you that I have many happy hotmail/live/msn users.
Are you seeing issues using MailDroid?
edit: Go to windowslivehelp.com and search for IMAP and you will see that it is not supported.
I have my hotmail account synced directly to my desire, i simply told it to set up an account used my hotmail addy and it got the settings from the internet for me.
However in case yours isnt picking them up for some reason I have provided them below for you- Htc Desire on Tmobile Software number 1.15.110.11
incoming settings
protocol =pop
pop server = pop3.live.com
security type =ssl
server port =995
outgoing settings
login required =ticked
username =hotmail addy ie
smtp server=smtp.live.com
security type=tls
server port=587
Account name =Hotmail
Your Name =what ever you want it to display
hope that helps you.
The op doesn't want to use pop access he wants imap or push email, where it deletes messages from server and shows read items as already read etc
Sully
Then simply select your live/hotmail account and select the three vertical bars from the widget to take you into the full email app.
then from there you need to press the menu button and select more.
then select settings and under send and receive settings select
Delete mail on server to be on ie ticked.
this will then delete them from your hotmail account as you delete them from your device when you press refresh to resync the account.
This wont mark them as read on the server however, what you can do as a workaround is to select the unread function on the device to read your unread from the device or to switch off the delete from hotmail account setting and delete them all from your device after you have deleted the ones you dont want which will leave the ones you want to keep on the server but remove them from your device. Then when you sign into hotmail you can mark them all read.
isnt perfect but better than nothing.
btw just to add the delete settings can be set up seperately for each account etc etc

I am aware of the delete function, I was just giving examples of what imap has over a pop account. If you delete a message from hotmail after your phone has synced then it will remain on the device, I know what you are saying but it just doesn't offer the functionality of imap or push email
Sully
Appreciate that but unless you want to hand over your login details to a third party to handle that we are stuck with the above as there is no imap support with hotmail for paid or free accounts to the best of my knowledge, the only item i know that uses imap in conjunction with live mail is the windows desktop live client however there is no visible settings shown on what ports or settings are used.
Until someone can figure them out we are stuck with the above.
re:
Correct, or until Microsoft decides to catch up and implement IMAP
Thank you so so much guys, you've been so helpful. One reason I need IMAP or push is because I quite often move mail between folders. I need something like mboxmail on iPhone but on a far superior OS!
The nearest looks like seven but it isn't perfect by any means.
Thank you again guys, you've been so helpful.
P.s. noticed an engadget post saying HTC desire had overnight upgraded its Google maps to include turn by turn and its fantastic!!!!
I've looked all over..and can't find a section that mentions push mail from yahoo, aol, etc.
I'm coming from the iPhone so the push mail works on the Yahoo side and I believe on the aol side.
I know that MS exchange has push feature to the phone but what about the other standards? gmail?
I noticed on Cookies HT there is a push mail icon but that did not work (i take it that's for ms direct push?)
Lastly...is there a setting or app that allows ALL mail to send / receive vs just doing one account at a time (annoying)?
Thank you!
the microsoft direct push functionality (supported on ALL windows mobile devices in at least the past 3-4 years) works with ANY microsoft exchange server.
this means it will work for gmail (i am using it myself!) because google has the exchange server on their end. google itself provides a generic windows mobile tutorial on how to set it up and you can find a video guide on youtube specifically on how to set it up on a stock HD2 (technique should work on custom ROMs too). my only additional advice is to back up your contacts (either to microsoft myphone or using pimbackup) before proceeding because the google sync can also upload your contacts to google, and you don't want your contacts to get nuked in case something goes wrong during the initial sync. another potential confusion you might face is that you will see the labels set up on gmail as folders on your device's client. by default, syncing of folders is disabled, but you can go into "manage folders" under one of the menus when viewing your inbox on the device to pick the folders that you want to sync in addition to the inbox. finally, the first sync may take several minutes (even an hour) depending on the duration you have set up to sync (i use a setting for last one month worth of emails) and on your connection speed (try to use wifi for the first sync).
i don't know about yahoo or aol but if they support the microsoft exchange server on their side, then push email should theoretically work in these cases also.
all in all, i rather like the functionality because it is highly configurable. you can even set up "schedules" such that it works in push mode on, say, weekdays from noon to midnight and switch to, say, 4 hour poll mode while you are sleeping.
then again, i haven't experienced push email on any other device such as the black berry or iphone so my view point is rather limited.
Simply put yes. I have yahoo pop3 servive and get my yahoo mail just fine on the HD2

pop3 in "poll mode" is different from push email, which is what the OP was asking about.
however, for most practical purposes, pop3/imap in quick poll mode (like once every 5 minutes) is really not that bad, but it might adversely affect battery life.
i suppose poll mode is fine for most of us but some individuals/businessmen might rely on quick email delivery straight to their phone so its more logical to consider poll vs push as two separate technologies in discussions!
Do the folders selected to be sync with inbox will sync automatically?

another potential confusion you might face is that you will see the labels set up on gmail as folders on your device's client. by default, syncing of folders is disabled, but you can go into "manage folders" under one of the menus when viewing your inbox on the device to pick the folders that you want to sync in addition to the inbox.

Hi,
I was searching for this and thank you for letting me know how to do it! I didn't know there is a "manage folders" option until I scroll down (Din knew I can scroll down, lol)
By the way, as mentioned above, do the folders selected sync automatically? Will they appear on the mail tab?
Thank you.

you can create an exchange account using your gmail login,if you have it,otherwise you can create a new gmail account and use it for send/receive your mail in push:in gmail web page you must add your yahoo account for check and than configure the exchange as i explane!
pop3 is NOT push. There is a delay. Depends on when you have it checking.
As far as i know, the default windows mobile does NOT support push email for yahoo. If you want push email, use seven like i did. Worked fine on my hd2.

It will allow push email from yahoo and many others. It is NOT an email app where you read them in seven, but a tool to push it to your phones normal email program. (what you would be using now)
I have been using it for a long time and had no problem.
