Hi guys,
I have checked my HTC Hero with the application named "eRay" and "Gphone Manager". Both applications say to me that my HTC Hero has only 192MB RAM!
How it should be possible if the specifications says that it comes with 288MB RAM inside??

Thats because the android operating system uses the rest, I believe. If you search for this on the forums, then you will see that the remaining memory is taken by the OS. I remember seeing a dream/magic forum question that was around the same topic.

I don't know about the Hero but the G2/Mytouch that are telco branded come with 192MB RAM. Those are the 32B (I believe) boards when you look at the fastboot screen. (Power on + Back)

Magic has 512 MB RAM and 288 MB ROM, while the dream has 256 MB RAM and 192 MB ROM.
Magic and Hero are similar in memory size.

EDIT: Blah, 4 different sites gave me 4 different answers.

Unless you swap RAM with ROM.
lol i cannot believe this is so hard. So what is the right answer?
Comptech, these are the facts (in alphabetic order):
Dream: ROM: 256 MB; RAM: 192 MB
Hero: ROM: 512 MB; RAM: 288 MB
Magic: ROM: 512 MB; RAM: 288 MB
These specs are found on the HTC website so I think they're quite trustworthy.
Apparently there's a Taiwan version (288mb) and a regular one (192mb).
I dunno

Sense UI/ G1 w/Google idea
Now, you can tell me how this would not work or critique it, but I have an idea:
Basically, when an update is released for non-"with google" devices and "with google" devices get the manual update of both and change the files in the "with google" update to where it has the sense UI instead of the Google one. Does that make sense?
I'm sorry if this is really stupid as I am only 15 years old and do not understand coding all the way

REPOST
not exactly, this is more of a way to do it rather than a question
google or no google
In canada ours is 288 what they mean by google is one and non google is other is on the back of the phone if it says google its the 192 version.. in canada ours say Rogers so they were made for our carrier so we are non google phones.. hope this helps
New to forums, and sorry for digging up a new thread, but just to clarify, the carrier branded models are 192 mb of ram and the htc branded ones are 288 mb. The model names for these are PVT32A and PVT32B incase you want to look it up.
PVT32A - 288MB RAM
PVT32B - 192MB RAM (usually Google branded)
And for brands such a "Rogers" if you're unsure of what board you have then simply power down your handset and when you power on hold the Power button and "Back" button at the same time to bring up the Boot menu.
Here it will show on the top line in green "32A" or "32B" and there you are!
The VODAPHONE/T-MOBILE Branded magics have 192mb of ram
THE HTC/ROGERS branded ones have 288mb of ram
the rom is the same

I just read this on engadget

Well its for Magic which is essentially dream. so lets hope one of our Devs get a dump of this rom add the english language and we'll finally have FULL Sense UI in our G1s

We already have the sense dump for the magic, and it's already been ported. Buuuuut it's for the 32A, the 288mb ram model, just like the Hero. Apparently it's the fastest yet, but it's still meant for hardware with a 1/3 more ram.
I believe the Google branded phones are the 32Bs which have the same ram as the G1 (192mb) so it would would make sense (pun intended) for them not to get the update (RAM wise + licensing).

Aahh.. so thats the "Sence UI" roms floating around. well i think days of my G1 are limited then, as most of the new roms will be for the new HTC or Motorola hardware with more ram. We have been trying Compcache & Swap but its still not up to the mark. forget Cyan's ROM even the T-Mo's 1.6 without modification runs faster than any of the Hero Roms.

Yup, the Sholes/Droid sounds awesome on paper, seems like much more of an upgrade than the Cliq. I'd buy one the second it's released if I had the cash.
This has been an issue I haven't seen addressed directly yet. I'm hoping some savvy users here can answer it once and for all.
This TI wiki article states the following:
OMAP Linux cannot support more than 256MB of SDRAM by default because of software conflicts.

This XDA post seems to indicate that N1 does not support 512MB but instead only about 200MB is seen but that it can be fixed with a firmware update, maybe patched with what was proposed in that wiki article.
Additionally, a look through the new DROID Eris 2.1 ROM shows a bunch of new phone codenames and also the supported FLASH and RAM combinations, none of which has SDRAM greater than 256MB, indicating to me that they know they can't do anything with more.

SAMSUNG_256MB_FLASH_256MB_SDRAM
SAMSUNG_256MB_FLASH_128MB_SDRAM

So, can no Android phone currently make use of more than 256MB of SDRAM?
Do a search next time!
The .29 kernel only supports ma 256mb RAM
the .32 kernel supports the full 512mb RAM.
You can install a custom ROM like cyanogen which has .32 or .33 kernel to get the extra memory.
Is the extra ram noticeably faster? I guess its almost twice the ram it currently uses but I don't see posts about it being a lot faster. And since the fix is widley available I can only hope google hasn't implemented it because maybe its not that impressive of an improvement...
definitely faster and i don't know why you haven't seen people commenting on it being faster because i've seen various comments about it being faster in different posts here, youtube, and cyanogen's site amongst other android sites/communities

Thanks. I'm not rooting so I haven't spent time in dev forum just general forum and a few standard (not android-specific) tech websites but no other forums. I intended to just wait for whatever google wants to share with me...I had only seen one post about the mem hack and the poster said there wasn't much difference. Which seemed odd but I believed it since, like I said, I figured if the kernels out surely google has this under control and would want me to have it if its a big difference. Oh well ill be patient, as a stock user I've got a lot to look forward to with this hot rod!
Hi
So I'm new to these forums and I have some questions.
I would like to run Android on my HTC Touch, but I'm not quite sure if it's possible. I started reading some threads but it's really confusing.
As far as I understand the HTC Touch and the Vogue are practically the same, except that the Touch is GSM, and the Vogue is CDMA. All of the tutorials that I find state that a CDMA Phone is needed, so I guess it's not possible to boot Android on a GSM?
So mine is a Regular HTC Touch, with a SIM Card, so it's a GSM Phone...
Is it possible to run Android on it, and how?
I hope you can help me.
Greets and thanks in advance.
The GSM version of the HTC Touch is known as the HTC Elf, while the CDMA version is known as the HTC Vogue
The Vogue has twice the ROM and RAM of the Elf (256mb ROM and 128mb RAM in the Vogue vs 128mb ROM and 64mb RAM in the Elf). The Vogue also has a 400mhz processor vs the 200mhz one in the Elf.
As for Android on your Elf, take a look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385129
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554479
The poster above is absolutely right. In fact, the only similar thing between the Vogue and the Elf is the outer body... the internals are completely different.
Thanks for these quick answers.
So basically Android on a HTC Elf is possible, but it's not really a smart thing to do ...
Why not a smart thing to do. Even I was thinking to load an Android ROM on my Vogue.

Vogue has no issues. Keep in mind that the build must match the device. HaReT basically is processor driven, which means that if you are not sending the right instructions to the right processor, it simply will not work. Why am I saying this? Processor for Vogue and Elf are different.
The site tells the tale. Here is the canadian HTC site with the specs for the Desire Z. ROM shows 4GB:
http://www.htc.com/ca/products/desirez-bell#tech-specs
Here is the UK HTC site for the Desire Z. ROM says 1.5GB
http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desirez/specification.html
Someone getting screwed again??
Typo on the Canadian site ?

And G2 says 4GB too, yet most of them get 1.5GB :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796421&highlight=1.5GB
Look again. There's more than just the ROM that's different from other specs. we've seen.
The battery is 1230mah
The weight is 164g instead of the 180g we've seen everywhere else.
Weird.
I will be very very happy if it has 4 GB of ROM. (CDN Version).
@LickTheEnvelope: but very, very improbable. T-Mobile G2 has 1.5GB for you as a user, period :
http://www.facebook.com/TMobile?v=wall&story_fbid=107096669355183&ref=mf
The G2 includes 4GB of internal memory, of which a portion is accessible for downloading applications from the Android Market and a portion is allocated for both the operating system and preloaded applications.

Same applies for Desire Z and same will apply for Desire Z NAM. There is no 1.5GB and 4GB variant, all have 1.5GB user and 4GB total internal flash memory. HTC states the real, usable size of memory, T-Mobile states the total amount of memory.

You would likely be correct. Bell's spec sheet lists their desire Z at 1.5 GB. Oh well.
That is so deceiving cause the Desire HD and the Desire Z (UK version) both say 1.5GB and the Desire Z (CA) and G2 (T-Mobile) say 4GB. That is WAY off from 1.5GB. What the hell do they need 2.5GB for OS and pre-installed apps for?!? That's CRAZY!!
Good question, but i have no answer.
There's a massive ongoing discussion on the whole 1.5 GB vs 4 GB thing over on the G2 forum. So far, it's been shown (via dismantling a G2) that it really does have a 4 GB chip in there, but only 1.5 GB seems to be accessible - so far, no-one can explain why.
This has been extensively discussed previously
Search for the "HTC vision" variants thread
They all have 4GB memory but "only" 1.5GB is user accessible for apps,
which I still think is enough,
more than plenty when considering the other phones in the market have less than half that ammount, and the number of apps you could ever possbly install into your phone
To make this clear again:
Some operators are marketing it as "4GB" and some are saying "1.5GB", but thats THE SAME because in the end ALL HTC VISION VARIANTS (T-mobile G2, HTC Desire Z, Desire Z NAM-US, Verizon's Merge...) have memory of 4 GB/1.5GB accessible.
Id Say topic is clear and edification by grab. This thread should be closed to keep these clean
