G1 vs iPhone 3GS

I have been a loyal T-mobile customer since 2003, so when I had to move to Iowa, I tried really hard to live with the local roaming partner and my G1. After many problems with my service and signal strength at home, I decided to move on. I want to give T-mobile credit here, because I had 15 months left on my contract and they waived the ETF. Thanks to them and here is a rare story for everyone of some good customer service reguarding ETFs. I travel out of the country a few times a year, so I wanted a GSM phone that I could take with me. In my area, that really only left me with the roaming partner I had been frustrated with, (Iowa Wireless) and AT&T. Timing was just right, so I went ahead and bought 2 3GS iPhones for my wife and I. I did get my G1's unlocked and they are for sell if anyone's interested, (one rooted, one stock, both black, one has a small ding from a drop, the other's perfect, make an offer) but I've always wanted to try an iPhone out for myself and this just worked out well for us. I love Android, the open-ness of it, the customization possible and the general ability to tinker and hack it is very appealing to me. That being said, the 3GS is a great phone. The video recording is the best on any phone I've ever used or seen firsthand. I'm sure some of the unlocked HTC or Nokia phones that cost 400, 500 or 800 bucks can match or beat it. But for a subsidized US carried phone I am impressed. Also, the anti-fingerpring oleophobic (probably spelled that wrong) coating is amazing. A friend stopped by with a 3G iPhone and the difference was amazing. Also the speed difference is very very noticable. People here bash some ROM's for being too slow or not "snappy" enough compared to others. The difference between a 3G and te 3GS is way more than any difference I experienced with the roms I tried on my G1. I know this is a HTC dream forum, but as a big Android fan, I wanted to share my experience with the switch. Now after the HTC Hero comes out, among many other different versions of Android phones, I'd place my bets on them. For now, however, the new iPhone is hard to beat in my opinion.
Also, I have not posted very many times as I rarely have any useful input that hasn't already been shared, but I have used this forum so much for the last year. Thanks to everyone who contributes here. Without XDA the G1 and Android wouldn't be near the phone and platform they are.

ive got a g1 and a iphone 2g. i like both of them a lot but even the iphone 2g is a better and faster phone than tha g1

The reason I liked my G1 is totally different than why I like my iphone. Honestly, my G1 was almost a hobby by itself. This started when I got my old Nokia 5300 and started tinkering with it. Then I got a T-mobile Shadow / HTC Juno. Windows Mobile is kind of a pain in the ass, but there's no questioning all the capabilities you can get on your phone if you're patient enough. With Android it was all about what can my phone do next? With the iphone its, damn, this phone actually made my day easier and more enjoyable. So far I use my iphone's capabilites more than I did the G1.

I guess in this sense its arguable that the iPhone's reliability factor beats the G1. However, I think if we all dropped the custom ROMs and Apps2SD we might be able to gain that reliability factor the iPhone has through the stock ROMs. I don't see many people flashing custom ROMs onto iPhones now ;D

True, we are all blazing ahead with custom G1 roms that aren't as clean or ultimately reliable as the OEM's (although once again the custom roms are a huge part of why I think we all love android). I never really had a problem with reliability on my G1. I kept a copy of a ROM I knew worked well at all times on my sd card and only had to use it once when apps2sd went a little haywire one day. I just don't feel the need to modify the iphone as much as I did with the G1. The one thing I wasn't looking foward to was giving up the G1's actual keyboard. This has proven to be easier than I thought it would be. I can type pretty fast on the iphone. Not as quick or error free as my G1, but it's getting easier and hasn't been the stubling block I thouth it would be. I am a huge google user though and I miss the close connectivity the G1 had more than anything so far.

The big thing is that the G1 LETS us modify it, the iPhone... does not.

g1 has potential to be great but is hindered by internal specifications by the devices in which their released with. as soon as there is a phone with the same internal specs as the iphone whatever generation it may be then we will see android pure potential.

i think thats called the HTC Hero

never had the I phone, but i had many clones and many touch phones in the last 2 years and have many friends with the i phone 3g 3gs and there sorry as in the look and fell they are a nice device. as in speed pssst. my G1 smoked any i phone on 3g with stocked webkit and there browser and on wifi they where still lodading java pics and i was all ready browsing face book. and now with the rooting vs pawing or what ever it is that u do to unlock the i phone remember the first unlocked i phone had to be cracked open and rewired. the first g1 was a change in a bash file directory lol. The i phone is the jessus phone dont get me wrong but the g1 and android are the gods that every person prays to when there phone is stolen broken or lost.

Not really, the htc hero is identical to the dream except for double the flash/ram and it doesn't have a keyboard. Junk in my opinion.
The Sony X2 looks interesting though, assuming that it'll be possible to root/customize it and ditch their goofy UI.

AT&T's First Android Phone, The Backflip

So, I know this isn't about the HTC Hero or anything, but if it needs to be moved or deleted so be it. It is off topic. I just wanted to discuss the first Android phone on AT&T. I think it just launched over the weekend. So, specs are very, how should I put it, out-dated for being a newly released phone.
528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201a(same speed as our HTC Hero which came out over a year ago. Well, the GSM one anyways.)
172mb of storage for apps.(I think we have 159)
3.1 inch screen. (We have 3.2, yes?)
And get this, it only has Android 1.5!
Talk about a Backflip that lands you on your head. But that's not bugs me the most about AT&T's first Android phone...Get this, apps outside the Android Market are blocked/disabled. Yes, that's right. Disabled. Talk about iPhone mindset. That's kinda against what Android is about.
What do you guys think? AT&T trying to ruin people's first Android experience so they will switch to the iPhone?

It's a POS... thank GOD I jumped to Sprint to get the Hero and didn't wait for whatever ATT was going to offer for Android

Motorola was at are center showing off the phone and the funny part was the gentleman that was showcasing the phone didn't know anything other then what was on the promo sheet.... the phone is just like tue clic from t mobile

Look at it this way. If they didn't "disable" the out side apps thing, they would then be competeing with them selves. Also with yahoo, ATT has a deal with Yahoo to use them as there primary search for Mobile phones.
They released a crumby phone so Apple couldn't get to pissy with them over competition. Welcome to corporate America. Same stuff goes on where I work on a smaller scale. We will sell 3rd party hardware that is crappier than our hardware. It makes us look real good and gives a reason to charge our premium.
I put disable in qoutes because an advanced user can push the APK's with ADB.

I do think the track pad navigation on the back is a cool idea, though I think partially ripped off from Apple's plans for the next ICrap. It is supposed to have a touch sensitive back if the rumors are true. Yet another law suit for Apple to push out I'm sure.

It only gets 1.5? Ouch. It would not be to bad of a phone if it wasn't for that. Hopefully they can root the sucker and upgrade it

I can't believe AT&T would have the audacity to cripple an Android phone and then on top of that, decide to put Yahoo search in place of Google search on an Android device, what retards. Thank God I'm on Sprint and have a Hero and can look forward to the amazing Supersonic and what not.

I am now in an all android household. I have the hero, one roommate has the mytouch on t-mobile and the other one just got the backflip as he has been desperate to upgrade on att. Feeling bad for him now. Did not know the phone would be so gimped
out of the box. Thought yahoo search was the only impairment it would have. Tried to get him to switch to Sprint but he wanted to stay loyal. This is the reward att gives him!

Wont 95% of users care less that yahoo is the default search and that they can only install applications from the marketplace?
My wife is due for an upgrade and shes debating between the Sprint Palm Pre or the backflip on ATT and although ATT's @#!& actions are infuriating to hardcore users like us I think the average user with their average interest wont care a bit. It seems that the back flip will still be a better device than the iphone right?

It does feel like they did that to keep Apple happy. But again, why the backflip in specs? The phone barely beats our phone in memory....and our phones are "old" now. I think they should do it right. They could have made a lot of money with a better spec'ed phone. Every review says not to buy it. Why not sell the N1? Hmmm. I guess ATT likes their noses covered in a brown substance.

I would NEVER buy that. If I wanted an Android on AT&T I'd get a G1, root it, unlock it, and put an AT&T sim in it.

I could definitely see this as a deliberate attempt to hurt android. AT&T has been making wheel barrels full of cash off the iPhone and have no reason to be interested in open technology like Android.
In 6 months AT&T will point to sales numbers and say "Android just isn't preforming, people don't want it" I think they want it to fail, that or they're totally incompetent morons.

NEWS: Sprint HTC Supersonic - > HTC Evo - Summer 2010...

Probably not the right forum, but I thought I'd break the news to you guys:
It seems like that the rumored Sprint HTC Supersonic is gonna be called, "HTC Evo" and it will be released on Sprint in Summer of 2010.
How do I know this? Engadget's coverage is sponsored by Sprint, and even though it's not officially released, they already have a banner that popped up as an advertisement and linked to a Coming Soon Sprint page.

@mazzarin: If you look at those pics on engadget, it has the same keyboard as HD2..
I for one, hate that keyboard since it has this arrows on the bottom, and when in landscape they're on the right.. So typing in landscape means keyboard is not "centered" (if you know what i mean, i'm sure HD2 users do).
So optimal solution would be that desire HTC_ime, since it's also 800x480

Cool beans. I will keep my HD2 and hope one day we get WM7 running on it. But come summer, I am getting this baby which will most likely become my primary phone.

The Qualcomm 8650 chip does support GSM as well as CDMA, so is say there's a possibility for a GSM version.

You should try Android... it works for business just fine. I can't ever see going back to Winblows

I've got a Sprint Hero, and use it as my primary phone. Work, play, addictions. It's great at just about everything. (Android, the Hero is kindof lacking cajones)

I'm using an HTC HD2 on AT&T's network. I absolutely love the phone. Coming from a long line of qwerty keyboard packing HTC phones, getting used to typing on the screen has taken a few weeks. I have also been playing with a nexus one. I truly believe that Android will kill off Windows Mobile. This is a shame because the HD2 running WM6.5 is an extraordinary device. This device comes a little too late. HTC should have built something like this two years ago instead of that touch pro with the little teeny screen. I digress.
It will be a miracle if MS can pull off WM7. They are already so far behind Apple and Android. Even if WM7 is great, Android will be so far ahead by then in term of apps and numbers. Even of MS gives the operating system away for free, it may be a tough sell.
This is sad but the writing's on the wall. Heck, there isn't even a Kindle app for WM. It seems developers have already pronounced WM DOA before the announcement of WM7.
I'd love to use a GSM version of the Supersonic. CDMA is such a lousy network. The battery has to be much larger to last even a day. With Wimax going, the thing will be lucky to last half a day per full charge.

Hero was a mistake I regret

So basically I'm phone-savvy and all (maybe not at as much as the devs here) and bought the HTC Hero around 6 months ago.
I made a big mistake.
First of all, I'm on T Mobile US and I got the unlocked European version and though I knew 3G wouldn't work I just said "who cares" but now I realize that 3G is actually quite a big jump from the slow EDGE.
Second, I'm not quite satisfied with the HTC-ized Android. And plus we still haven't gotten a 2.1 update.
Third, it just doesn't feel that good of a phone as do several others.
Sure it can do just about everything, but hell even the iPhone is simpler to use and easier. By simplicity I'm talking about the time it takes to achieve a task which is on average longer on my HTC Hero (at least for me).
Now the 2.1 update has been pushed back further and I'm very disappointed with HTC. All in all I think I'm going to trade in my phone for something else, maybe a blackberry or an iphone or just sell it and wait for something else.
I don't want to start a flame war, and I'm glad those of you who are satisfied with the HTC Hero have a phone you enjoy... but for me, I guess it's over.
I'd also like to thank all the developers who worked so hard to make my Hero that much more usable and interesting. Thanks guys!

I have to disagree. I have been working in the wireless industry since 1999 and also consider myself to be phone savvy. I've been using smartphones since the Motorola MPx200! The Hero is HANDS DOWN one of the BEST phones I've ever had. I'm using mine in the US on AT&T (Telus Hero, so 3G works). I don't think it is slow at all. If you don't like the HTC "stuff", load a Vanilla ROM. I had a Magic before my Hero and only had EDGE on the Magic, so I can see where that would bother you. But that's not because it's a Hero, but rather because you are using it on the wrong network. When the official 2.1 comes out and the devs have access to the proper kernel, these phones are going to fly! It's a pity you can't get 3G on it, because I think you would have a much better opinion of the phone.

Well, not really.
You should have known a smartphone relies on a decent data connection. Downloading one or two emails and updating the weather app is about as much as I can take on GPRS/EDGE.
You aren't satisfied with the Sense UI? Did you even watch any online videos before you bought the phone? Surely you didn't just walk in to a purchase like this blind. The 2.1 update is going to be Sense UI too so why are you holding out for it? Why don't you just put a vanilla 2.1 ROM on your Hero and have it now without Sense?

eatmydave, speed really isn't the issue. My Hero is running perfectly fine, and as for data I'm mostly on a WiFi which is why I got the Hero from Europe and back then the Telus Hero wasn't out. Personal opinion, I just didn't have a satisfactory experience with the phone. I'm not bashing on the phone at all It's great and a lot of people love it... just not me.

Even I do disagree.
HTC Hero is a great phone. Its proved that It can handle 2.1 ver well including 3D Gallery n Live wallpapers. Its just missing the 2.1 Update from HTC. But not doing that might make HTC to loose some customers.

I run on edge most of them, and for day to day usage, you wouldn't notice much difference with Edge vs 3g vs HSDPA. The web is a bit slower, but I use opera mini so pages are small.

The lack of 2.1 is annoying, but give Villain a whirl. I'm running 5.3 it's the first time I'm happy with a 2.1 rom. I had been running the Mr Bang performance rom for a few months previous as I felt it was the best 1.5 rom.
I to got the urge to move to something else, but there will be bigger upgrades around the corner.

No, I'm not being defensive. EDGE is crap and on average you get less than the speed of a 56K modem. The times I find I really need a decent data connection is when I am not near any WiFi, say if i'm lost somewhere or need to find a nearby business or shop. Doing this on EDGE is a real ball ache and if I knew that's all I'd ever have I'd reconsider my phone/network choice.
Sense ties the OS together visually but I wouldn't call it eye candy because IMO Android needs this. It also provides quite a few useful widgets and shortcuts, meaning you don't have to go hunting in the market as soon as you get your phone for something as basic seeing the weather, bookmarks or connectivity toggles on a home screen.
I agree no one who can afford a Legend or Desire would buy a Hero now. Furthermore the only reason to buy a Legend is because you have a soft spot for aluminium or can't cope with the physical size of a Desire - there's only a £15 price difference between the two phones on devicewire.com!
HTC are dragging their heels with the Hero's 2.1 update but it'll be here eventually.

It seems to me that despite what you said you did want to start a flame war. Why even post something like this? We are all on this forum because we love our Heros and want to get the most out of them. You've gotten 6 months of use out of a phone you wanted so much you imported it, there's no use complaining now about how it's not up to scratch. So what if 2.1 hasn't come through the official channels yet, this is an open source project and if you're relying on official roms, then I truly believe you are not realising the full potential of what your phone can really do.
Maybe you should just join the ranks of the drones conforming to consumer commercialism and buy an iphone

This is a valid topic imho, if he doesnt like his product which he has bought with his hard earned money, this is his prerogativ.
Nobody had to respond to his post, people could just let it die, but people keep posting, therefore, its a valid topic.
If i had known about HTC's unfriendly update/customer policy, i wouldnt have bought it either.

I sat here for far too long constructing a long scathing reply but I decided i'm not going to waste any more of my time on it! So:
OP - If you really hate your Hero so much that's your choice. You have a right to your opinion and the world would be a dull place if everyone liked the same thing.

All I'm saying is that I, personally, didn't like the Hero. Never said anything about the Hero being bad or anything. It's all a matter of opinion. I have friends who love their Motorola Razrs and laugh when I tell them I paid 600 dollars for a phone, they just say "what's the point of using internet on your phone?" so yeah there are people like that also.
As a device Hero is definitely great. As something I would like/want/need/use, it's not. Just not for me.
I'd appreciate it if people didn't try to argue their points here, I'm not disagreeing with anyone.

Well I have to completely disagree with you I got my Hero in April and I love it I am running Kimera's overclocked ROM so I basically have a Legend and my Hero does do everything I love to show off with it and everyone thinks its so cool and its so fun to just play with and i absolutely HATE Apple

@MentalDeath - Agree on all accounts. Especially the Kimera ROM.

why did you not just get a htc magic (mytouch 3g) its same specs as hero bar the camera and would work on T-Mobile with 3g

No I dont think this will help as that do not have the bands the US carriers use

[CLOSED/DZ] Stock Android > All

Hardware aside, I'm willing to sell my Vibrant for this phone for the simple fact the G2 will have stock android. I'm getting very close to the point where I will not support phones that do not ship with stock android. Seeing motoblur or touchwiz makes me sick. The manufacturers might as well design their own OS because that IS NOT ANDROID.
Only T-Mobile has released stock android devices to this day (in the US). This could set T-Mobile higher than the competition if they would just release more stock phones. The first MyTouch ran on vanilla android so why can't the new one do the same?
I'm really looking forward to the G2. Looks like a great business phone. The keyboard looks great (could be better with a 5th row) and the z-hinge will be a cool addition. This thing is going to have incredible developer support just like the G1. Why do you think so many G1 owners still use that phone? The dev community kept it alive. All of the stock android phones have huge dev support. This one will be no different.
Still disappointed that it only ships with a 1300mAh battery. Even if you can overclock the phone it would be smart not to as it would drain hella fast. Hopefully they will sell 1500-1700mAh batteries that don't make the phone too much thicker.
Can't wait to see actual footage of the phone. Hopefully tomorrow at the HTC event they show it off. I've heard T-Mobile employees who have seen the phone saw its amazingly fast. It better live up to the hype, although for practical use I don't think HSPA+ will be much faster than 3G at this point.

I agree. I cant wait for the G2. Ive been a G1 owner the past 2 yrs. Cant wait to upgrade. Oh by the way, the Droid 1 had stock android.

actually i can vouch for the HSPA+ speeds, on 3G my mytouch slide was getting just under 1Mbps and when they flipped on the towers around me i started pulling 4-5 Mbps so with the limit of the device set at 14.4 Mbps then i am sure we can get at least 8 possibly more than that(of course it will diminish once more people are on the network just like anything else

If that is the Idea then there is no room to ***** about the fragmentation of the OS itself by Google. I for one like the idea of a vanilla platform. As many have stated, this allows for quicker updates of the software, where all the tightly integrated crap like motobelch either causes huge delays, or the updates never come due to development costs. Hats off to t-mobile for this phone and I'm glad I did not jump on the Vibrant even though its a great device.
I just hope I can get it on our corporate plan.

agree. people should be able to do whatever they want with android. I don't have the expertise to know about licensing and when you can legally profit off of customizing someone else's work, but I think there should be a free market so people can choose what they want. personally, I prefer stock. I'll continue to support handsets that come with stock. but I like how there are other versions. I mean... the same principle that allows android to be modded into sense and touchwiz is the same one that allows Cyanogen to legally release his mods.

stock is awesome cause froyo has built in tethering and hotspot support also allows for faster updates and better compatibility with custom roms.

G2 having vanilla android was the nail in my nexus coffin to Oklahoma thank you ebay.
The G2 is going to be friggin awesome. I cant stay off the computer waiting for the email from T-Mobile.
Edit: sold that baby for 480 buckaroos, had to do it while the gettin's good.

except the original droid was pretty slow and the ally had some proprietary apps and themes on it.

My buddy that has used both phones said the N1 was snappier than the G2 in OS performance. Kind of bummed, they keyboard alone isn't enough for me since I've gotten used to SlideIt but maybe the hspa+ will be enough. I'll be keeping both phones just in case.

could have been an early version and i find that odd since every other report says its supposed to be as fast or faster. its best to just wait and see for yourself. such as with more ram the phone will stay faster longer and multitask better then the n1 also more internal memory so you can have more apps without having to use aps2ext. plus a hardware keyboard is a must for some people though maybe not to you. the point is the nexus is dated in many ways so the g2 will outperform it in the long run. its better to wait until everything is finalized and the product is released then phonescoop and phonearena can do the comparisons with actual video and show which is faster.

agh. just want it to come out so we can run linpack on it and compare it with other phones

Here in lies the problem with calling the G2's Android 2.2 "stock" Android.
TMO has removed the wifi hotspot option from the OS.
Can it really be called stock then ?
Seems to me it cant be.
I have 2.2.1 on my Nexus and it has the wifi hotspot.
And its faster than tethering.
So TMO is in my estimation ripping people off calling it stock or vanilla.
Just saying.

Yeah, I don't like that they removed the hotspot in their flagship HSPA+ phone. That is insult to injury. I am not even getting > 1MB and am squarely in a HSPA+ area - that, my friends, is the injury.
