Mytouch 3g Rooted - Complete Noob Here - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello all,
Please bear with me, I am very new to rooting and this is my first post here . I rooted my MyTouch3g today with the 1touch method, no problems whatsoever. I Have the CryogenMod 4.0.1, and everything seems to be working fine. I just have a few questions that i would appreciate if anyone could answer.
1) What is the difference between 32a and 32b? I see these terms being thrown around alot.
- I think i read somewhere before rooting that the MyTouch3g is 32b, so i made sure to get Cryo for 32b, but i do not actually know the difference.
2) Is there a good USB Tethering application for MyTouch3g? I have the Wifi Tether app, but would like a USB one for my Desktop Computer.
3)Do Class 6 SD Cards make a huge difference? I just ordered one from newegg after reading that it would greatly improve performance.
4)I Installed Apps2SD, and i ran the program, then all my applications disappeared and i had to reinstall them. I did not create any partitions or anything yet, which i think might have caused it to do so. Has anyone experienced Apps2SD seemingly getting rid of all applications?
5) Are there any good stable/fast completely new interface roms besides the Hero UI? I heard that the Hero UI roms are not as fast as the original/Cryo roms. Please correct me if i am wrong.
Thank you for your time.

i can answer a couple of your questions. and i think you mean Cyanogen, not Cryogen...
1) 32A and 32B are the two different types of HTC Magic devices. The difference is the RAM where 32A has 288 MB and 32B devices have 192 MB. As a result of this, rom's made for 32A will have trouble running on 32B devices as it will be expecting 288 MB of RAM and vice-versa.
2) dunno about this
3) In my experience, if you are constantly running files from the SD card, the class will make a difference.
4) dunno about this
5) you could always install the Cyanogen rom and use a Hero theme. if you're lucky enough, i've heard the Palm Pre theme is stable and pretty fast.

1) 32A is the HTC branded or rogers Magic. It has 288 MB of Ram. the 32B is the Vodafone or Mytouch. It has 192 megs of Ram. Not as powerful. It's also CyanogenMod. Not CryogenMod.
2) If you search you can probably find one. Wireless Tether for Root Users is probably what you have and it is great in my opinion. Prefer it over a wired tether anyways.
3) Class 6 are badass. Good move on buying it from newegg. You will notice a difference.
4) CyanogenMod does apps2sd for you. If you ran another apps2sd program, it will break it. That's probably why that happened. Wipe your phone and reflash. When you install apps, it will do it on its own, but only if you have your SD card partitioned. You do not need to run any apps2sd programs.
5) Cyanogen has the best ROM in my opinion. Fast, stable, very clean, etc. Hero is basically your other option. If you do go that route, I recommend Qtek's Hero. It is wicked fast. Haven't really had any lag issues myself. Cyanogen had a Palm Pre port but I think that was removed due to Palm, Inc. filing a complaint. Not 100% on that one.
Hope this helped.

Thanks
Thank you for both of your replies, heh i will now refer to it by the correct name, Cyanogen.
I Guess i will look up how to partition the card, but ill just wait until my Class6 comes in the mail rather than bothering to do it with the lame stock 4GB Card.
Thanks again.

if you have a mytouch, i would actually suggest just formatting your memory card with just the plain fat32 1 partition, and not bother with apps2sd... apps2sd was really created because people were running out of memory on the g1... i'm currently running cyanogen's rom without apps2sd and i actually find it faster... all you have to do is not partition your card for apps2sd and cyanogen's rom will not install apps2sd... i'm sure you can find reasons to use app2sd in the future, but you can fit hundreds of applications on the onboard RAM instead of the sd card, which is always going to be faster...
look for pdanet for usb tethering... it costs 29.99 for the full version, but you can use it for free for HTTP web browsing ONLY... it won't work for most anything else... its not available on the android market because google pulled it, but just do a google search for it and you'll find it... you'll have to go into settings > applications > and check unknown sources so you can install the .apk after you download it from the website

more of a newbie
I just got my mytouch and i wanna put this on it where do i begin....from the 100% start..?
thanks in advance

you're gonna have to root it and upload 3.9.7. Then from there you can flash the theme.

The mytouch has 192 there are no 288 for mytouch. If u do root it, you are already flashing a modified rom to begin with. Depending on the rom, it could have multi touch. Cyanogen has it in his newest 4.0.2 version. The hero roms are the only ones with flash, but they are not that great. It aslo has multi touch but they lag. Hope this helps

Ok, this information must be out of date because we just gota MyTouch for my wife and it has 288mb out of the box. So what other way is there to identify if this is 32a/32b? Is it possible that Tmobile just decided to release a 32a version? Or is it a 32b just because its a MyTouch? I saw a post that lists them by which board is in them. How do you see which board is installed? Please excuse if this is all something that has been covered, I have used the search function which is how I found this article. And Im new to android so I'm not quite sure what to search. Thank you in advance for your time and courtesy.

No, it's not out of date. You are probably referring to the ROM, that's the space where your apps are stored. If you download a lot of apps, that space will go down. To give you further confirmation as to what board you have, which is 32B, power off your phone and then press the "back" button and power at the same time. You will go into fastboot from here. It will show you that you have a 32B board from there. The mytouch has 192MB of RAM. In the first quarter of next year, a special edition of the mytouch will be released, which will be 32A board, having the 288MB of ram. It will be a Fender edition. Hopefully this answered your questions.

Best Mytouch 3G 1.2 Rom?

I know, I know, you reading this thread are very disappointed of me, a noob, for asking this since a billion other of my fellow noobs already asked this. I just wanted to know what is the best rom out there today for the T-Mobile Mytouch 3g 1.2 (w/3.5mm). I have recently moved over from the HTC Touch Viva forum and I am amazed by all the development going on, considering the amount of people here compared to there. I have installed Amon_Ra's recovery and flashed a rom but didn't quite like it due to the Google apps always force closing (I think most people were having the problem with the rom) so I restored the backup. The only thing done to the phone is that I rooted it and installed the recovery. Thank You very much if you decided to point me in the right direction, and if you didn't, have a nice day.
Don't hate on me just because I'm a noob! I'm 16 and android modding is way more confusing than WM6.5/6.1, haha.
The best in my opinion is the one linked in my sig. The slide rom. it has everything you could want from dounut and a hero type rom. The reasons for all the google apps FC is because you have either not done a full wipe before flashing the rom, or may not have your sd card partitioned in 3 partitions.
Download, put on sd card, flash, Let it sit for about 15 min, it will take a long time to boot the first time.
That's probably why it FC so many times. I didn't do a full wipe nor did I have the SD card partitioned.
Do all ROMs require a partition of the SD card? How would I go about partitioning it?
I'll search around for it later. I have a math final to study for!
Can't go wrong with Cyanogen's Eclair ROM. No partitions required.

Thanks for pointing this rom out, I really like it so far (just loaded it, loading my backup of my microsd on).
Looks very nice, runs very smooth and everything is supposed to work accept bluetooth so thats great. Hopefully it doesn't slow down once I load up my apps and this will replace CM as my daily driver until the hacked 2.2 comes out for MT3G 1.2

Thank you all for the input. I've downloaded SuperE a few days ago and it was the best ROM yet, everything works to the best of my knowledge. It's fast, smooth, and everything I would want from a non-official ROM. It actually feels like an official update from using it. I did have some random force closes, but it doesn't lower the overall score of the ROM. Eleven out of ten in my book!
The only thing left is a keyboard. I'm using the stock android one, but the keys are too small and make the input experience ****ty.

Don't you just need a different kernel for 32A?
I have no idea. BUT I have successfully booted cyanogen-mod 5-ds which DOES say is compatible with 1.2.. and it's an EXCELLENT rom.
Super E and CM 508 are already compatible with mt3g 1.2... dont need the 32a port
Any cyan based rom or rom using his kernel should be compatible with the 1.2 i suggest kolohes speedteam rom.

I got a G1 from ebay. Its rooted and OS is 1.6. It has cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1. build number DRC83. I need to install OS 2.2 and don't have a clue from were to start.
Thanks
Look through g1 development. Cyanogen has a froyo (2.2). Chromatic also has one that's based off it that has good reviews. Just wipe everything in recovery. Download Rom and flash in recovery. You can email me if u have questions. [email protected] also have to have danger spl. There are instructions on all that here on xda

Welcome aboard - if I have but one piece of advise, it is to take your time, read, read, read - search, and make sure you have all of the details and options understood before you jump in. ( I did not follow this rule - and jumped in without fully understanding - and proceeded to brick my first android phone )
To install 2.2 - you will need to get familiar with this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
This will help you to not have to install the "Danger SPL" which appears to have been necessary previously - but with these modifications, you can do without.
Be careful with where you take your information from - there are some posts in reference to upgrading, etc that are a bit out of date with the current modifications and files available.
Good luck - welcome aboard

If i get a Google Dev phone, do i have to use danger spl?
danger spl
I think bill is right. Dont know much about dev phones though. The g1 was the only phone that required it due to its internal rom space but firerat made a mtd patch that frees up a lot of internal space so you no longer need that. Thanks for the correction btw. Its a much better way to go. Like he said read read read. There is a vast amount of info in here. Maybe using search for dev phone would be of some assistance.

The Android Dev phone (if you can find one) is the exact same as the standard T-Mobile G1 (Dream) except it is defaulted with the engineering spl and it is sim unlocked. So even if you have the Android Dev phone and want to use Cyanogen's 2.1/2.2 you will still need the Danger SPL. Firerat's mtd patch is an alternative to this and it is much safer.

Plain Android

Just got my Desire Z today & as much as i love it I hate sense. I'm using ADD.Launcher atm to try & hide it but I still get there crappy apps.
So my question is, which is the best ROM to flash my phone to get to Vanilla Android?
Thanks in advance

Try Cyanogen. Check out the thread in the G2 dev forum, where there's loads of activity (the thread on the DZ side is pretty dead).
I've used Cyanogen before on my G1 & its good but it never felt like stock to me. Just wondering is it possible to flash the G2 Rom onto the Desire Z?

According to Cyanogen it's still not a totally stock build. But if you use gfree to get full radio S-OFF, you should be able to flash the G2 ROM. Do not try this with just S-OFF from the engineering hboot.

What is 'Radio S-OFF'? And what's 'engineering hboot'? Think I need to read up a bit more before I even consider rooting this device, if you could point me towards the best place to start I would be greatfull!

I have not seen stock Android running, only with Sense on my Desire Z, and I've not been able to find a simple list of what specific features Sense has added over vanilla.
Could someone point me to somewhere which might tell me whether I might prefer vanillia Android, as I'd hate to switch to an otherwise better ROM only to find lots of features that I liked have suddenly vanished...

If you look through the dev forum, you will find lots of custom ROMs. There are some custom ROMs based on the stock G2 ROM, and you may want to try one of those our (or possibly more than one of those).
What you need to do is to get permanent root on your phone (I recommend using the "rage" method, documented in the dev forum). Then you need to get S-OFF (Security Off) so that you can flash unsigned (i.e. custom) ROM images.
Originally there was a sort-of S-OFF using an "engineering" version of the bootloader. This was ok but kinda risky. We now have a much safer method, described in the stickes on the dev forum, using a program called "gfree". It now is clear you haven't used the engineering hboot, so just forget I ever mentioned that lol.
What I recommend you do is read up on "rage" and the new "gfree" S-OFF, read some more, ask questions if you're not sure, then only finally once you're clear, go ahead and do those procedures. Before you try another one, install ROM Manager from the Market, use it to flash Clockwork Recovery (it's an option inside ROM Manager), and then use it to do a full backup of your ROM - so that will mean if you don't like the new ROM you can very easily restore to what you have now.

You'll lose all the HTC apps. So if you like any of them, maybe you won't like a stock Android ROM ?
Have a look at HTC's spec sheet on the DZ, which does list all their add-on apps and widgets too, that should give you an idea - http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desirez/specification.html
But you could always do a Nandroid backup of what you have now, flash a new ROM to try it, then you can easily go back if you don't like it.

This.
Also want to point out that HTC's enhancements go beyond the apps, rosie-launcher and the widgets...
The T9-based dialler is theirs, as is the camera, the deskclock (with world cities), the music player, etc...
Oh and lots of little things like the icons/black statusbar etc.
I generally don't like having to use Sense, but I wish Google would up their game with regards to the dialler and camera especially. They're just terrible at the moment (which is why Cyanogen went to the trouble of practically making his own camera app).
Hopefully for Honeycomb...

I have to say that I'm a Sense fan. I can't fault it over stock Android (aside from the slight performance overhead, which is a non-issue if you overclock).
Vanilla Android - awful camera, contacts, dialler, ugly as hell, launcher looks nice but is plain annoying cos it doesn't fling more than a few lines, you don't get the Sense weather animations which I think are awesome eyecandy for showing off your phone to other people, Sense widgets are all generally pretty, the list goes on...
But ultimately that is MY preference, and the awesome thing about Android is you can customise it to fit your preferences. Try vanilla out - you have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain

Quick question for you, Why do you recommend the 'rage' method over other methord's such as 'visionary'?
This topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390&highlight=gfree talks about using 'gfree' & 'visionary' & seams like a very easy & straight forward way of gaining root access.
n/m: Kinda kept reading over topics & found that some people have been having problems with visionary with partitions etc. Ill pass on it just in case!
Well i followed your advice, read up on every thing & i am know running [ROM] NO SENSE: 11/Nov 1.22.531.8 r1 - HTC Vision (G2/Z) Stock & am loving it!

Yep, a lot of people seem to run Visionary and end up stuck in a boot loop or similar. I've never seen any problem like that with rage, the worst that seems to happen is it just doesn't work (but the phone is still fine), and that's usually because a command hasn't been typed in correctly or an error message came up and the user didn't realise it was important.

Engineering hboot, radios... Please help me understand

ok so I have been reading and what not... I have searched far and wide but still don't quite understand. But anyways here's my question.
Pros and cons of going to the other hboot?
Is there any reason to change my radio version? Will it benefit me at all?
is this idea of the way the phone works kind correct?
The phone starts up, hboot will load up the os files (which is my royalginger rom I installed)
So changing the hboot ver is like changing your BIOS ver on a computer motherboard.
now, what kind of tech is actually in this phone... A proc, graphics proc, memory, some storage space. Can any of these parts be modified, upgraded, or even touched? Or is it all permanently on the phones main chip.
And the last question. I know its possible to overclock phones.. But what is the best way to do it? Like, on my computer I never oc using software, always do it through the bios. But what's the best way on the glacier?
Thanks for answering any of these ?s... It'll all help me better understand my phone and how it works and I would like to learn this stuff well so I can help people out on this forum someday soon
To overclock:
1. Flash overclock kernal.
2. Install setcpu from market.
3. Go crazy.
4. You didn't search far and wide enough.

the .85 hboot will allow you to flash any part of a ROM, wipe any partition on the phone, and install recovery images from the Engineering scree. It helps you to not brick your phone. There have been a couple of people on this forum that would of bricked their device if they didn't have it.
Is there any reason to change my radio version? Will it benefit me at all?

IIRC the HBoot would be similar to a BIOS. It physically loads the OS. However i've never changed a BIOS on a Windows Computer so i cannot tell you.

It's all soldered into the main board and cannot be tampered with unless you feel like soldering, writing a kernel and a new OS.

The best way to over clock a ROM is to download and install a kernel. You will need a program similar to SetCPU to manage the speed. If you should download Cyanogen(mod)'s CM7.x it will have a overclocking kernel natively.

No problem, feel free to ask question and use the search alot of stuff as already been hit on.
well as far as the radio goes, some people (such as myself) have reported a better signal by flashing the newer radio, i noticed between 1-2 bar increase within the same spot in my room

With the caveat that, not always but often, better a radio with better signal will come at the expense of battery life.
screw up your bios and you pull the cmos battery, unplug the power supply and you're fine. screw up the radio or hboot and you have nothing to fall back on. A phone is a lot like a pc, without all of the fallback and replaceable parts.
I've been using the engineering radio for a few weeks now, no complaints, was worth the simple flash.
1. ok so to overclock I flash an overclock kernel. Can I flash in a new kernel without changing to a different rom (as in can I keep my royalginger thing I flashed in)
2. By installing the engineering hboot I can change any part of the rom. Does this mean I can do the above? Change my kernel without changing the whole rom?
3. A newer radio has the potential to increase my signal?
4. I've been searching for a while and still can't figure out the difference between an asop, sense, etc types of roms?
You guys are an amazing help... Thank you so much

YES. You need to make sure that you use a AOSP ROM kernel or a Sense Kernel. I'm not 100% sure about Royal Ginger. I believe it's AOSP but you'll want to double check

Yes. But you can flash kernels w/o needing the E-hBoot. You can flash them from the recovery. and not they will not mess with anything.

Yes some people are reporting that.

AOSP = Android Open Source Project. Look at the G2 for an idea. Cyanogen has AOSP style UI, but they throw some extra options in.
Sense = HTC Skin. It's what the Droid Inc, Desire, come with
MotoBlur = Motorola's Skin all of the Moto Droid line & the Cliq come with
Espresso / MySense = T-Mobile's custom Skin for the MyTouch 4G
thanks man. That helped a lot. One last question? By check what it is do you mean look up on the internet or on my phone

Kernels are based on the style of skin that you are using. We uses either Sense or AOSP. You need to know what type of ROM you are using, and flash the correct kernel. Meaning you cannot use a AOSP kernel on a Sense ROM. So make sure you know what RoyalGinger is prior to digging though Kernels.
Is there a way to confirm or verify if I have engineering boot installed?

power off, hold power and volume down together. 0.86 is default, 0.85 is engineering.

Could you explain how the eng hboot can help me not brick my phone?

Because it will allow you flash, wipe, or load specific sections of your ROM or allow you to reflash recovery images if one should fail. most people will never encounter this but it's a good failsafe to have on your phone.

So if i ever have an issue like some people are having where recovery says something like "cannot mount cache" causing the flashing to not work, I can fix that through the eng hboot?

faux's kernels clearing state which rom they will work for, so pick a rom, then pick a kernel if you want, overclocking isnt really necessary on our phones since its plenty fast already
btw royalginger is based on cm7 which is based on aosp

i assume it would depend on the exact reason why it stop reading the cache partition. I do know i've see a few threads where people flashed a different recovery image and was able to re flash a ROM and getting it work. But then again it'd all depend on why it failed.

Is there a newer version of eng hboot above 0.85
EDIT:
While we're on the subject of radios, where can I download the latest version for mt4g

[Q] Need Help..

first sorry for being a noob on this things..
i got a wildfire A3333 with android 2.2.1 running on it..
my question is..i want to root my phone..its possible? what should i do first? do i need to check anything b4 starting to root it?
and again..sorry being a noob :'( please help me!
You have to get S-OFF using Revolutionary. Don't touch Unrevoked, because its not needed and will not work. You can refer the outline of the process here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
after i doing this S-off stuff, its means my phone is rooted and i can run livewallpaper?
No. You will have to install a ROM which supports it. (Which can only be done after getting S-OFF, so its unavoidable)
Just a word of caution - Live Wallpapers immensely slow down the Wildfire, except a few ones.

except a few ones? didnt get what ur means buddy..
There are just a few I personally have tested which doesn't seem to slow down the phone as much as others.
- Starfield 2D
- Solar Wind
- Pixel Rain
- Nexus Like Live Wallpaper
There are probably more out there, but, with the above 4, slowdown is minimal, atleast for me.
ok last question here..
what is the different between rooted and unrooted wildfire..also the advantage of doing this root things :S
Advantages are potentially plenty. You can:
- Install Custom ROMs, including ones with Android 2.3.5
- Remove System Apps from ROMs you dont need
- Live Wallpaper Support
- Proper Apps2SD Support
- Many Root only apps like Titanium Backup (App Backup), SetCPU (Overclock CPU) etc.
In a nutshell, thats about it. There are quite a few more, but I'll keep my post short.
Obviously, none of the above things can be done without rooting your device.
ok many2 thx to u @3xeno..
do u think this stuff easy to do for a novice like me? i really wanna do it..but afraid will broke my wildfire >.<
I would say yes. Everyone is a novice when they start off, so, don't worry about it.
Besides, I would say the process is pretty safe (and easy - Its literally 1 click. I remember the process when Symbian S60 V3 had to be hacked. It needed a digitally signed certificate from an authority!) as well. Haven't seen any brick reports yet. Further, everything is reversible, so you shouldn't have issues claiming warranty in the future if the need arises.
Cyanogen Mod 7 <<-- what is this? i have read it somewhere.. :S
Cyanogenmod 7 is an 2.3.5. AOSP (android open source project) Rom, very fast and stable but it has no sense UI
Edit:It has some problems with GPS and Bluetooth file transfer but i think that can be resolved by flashing a new radio image

so u means if i put this on my wildfire it will bring some problems? and do u know how to fix the problems?
Well I don't know, because when I flashed it i didn't notice any problems except for the Bluetooth. But It's not the same for every phone.
Anyways no major problems, and I recommend that you do a nandroid backup before you flash any Rom just in case something goes wrong.
