Why remove all those apps though? I don't think there will be any speed gain from freeing up a dozen megs of data...

the music player on the nexus one is far from usable in my opinion, especially since I was spoiled with the iPhone's music player for so long.

well...a lot of them would be ones that would just automatically come on and I would end up killing them with a task manager anyways, this way I save the trouble of killing and sorting, etc. so I just have more readily available ram at all times.

Common misconception... your phone, or any computer, shouldn't slow down until it gets past a certain threshold of available memory. So having 150mb or 100mb of free RAM ought not be noticeable, and likely aren't.

Wrong thread?
i used to be a ram nazi like that...and then I learned better. Constantly killing tasks is not needed - and actually slows down the phone - for 2.0+. The platform's designed to have everything open and in a "sleep mode". This allows you to open all your common apps blazingly fast because it doesn't need to be loaded from the beginning.
Ditching my task killer OCD has resulted in my phone being faster than ever. My N1 instantly opens and closes apps like it was racing for its life. I often sit at my desk at work doing but going in and out of apps and admiring the speed and smoothness.
Having more unused ram does not result in more efficient or effective operation. Quite the opposite actually. Linpack and other benchmarks prove it. You can have 200MB free ram after a fresh task killing and score a really low benchmark score and visibly stuttery movement, or not use any task killer, 50MB free, score the highest benchmarks you can, and have the smoothest, quickest experience.
I can't speak for 1.6 and under because I haven't had experience. And the above is just my experience. I still use a task killer, but only for apps gone rogue.
Its ironic that you only have 4 apps on your homescreen, and you choose Market to be one of them. You're not going to download anything anyways. If you want nothing to run in the background, might as well stick to your iphone.
little did you all note, I have 300mb of RAM free, and that's at all times with facebook and twidroid always open 8)

HTC EVO 4G Camcorder Dropping frames
I've had the problem for over a year. Been to the Sprint store 5 times had hard resets done wiping my phone and no fix. They replaced twice and both new phones do the same thing. Went to the store again today because i'm due an upgrade and they will not do anything but give me another same phone unless I want to get the NEW HTC LTE that would cost $200. They told me that is the only way to fix it. That sounds like crap that I have to pay and switch to another phone to fix the issue.
I can't remember where I read this, but it said to fix this or at least make it better you need to change your read/write speed for your sd card. Haven't tried this myself though, because I don't use the camcorder.

I am using nitrous 1.55 with ca1ne's nitrous kernel. I just ran a few test videos on my own phone. At 128kb r/w under 30 seconds no problem over 30 seconds a little jittery.

Move the readahead speed to 512kb, if it still lags, use 1024kb.. also, it could be the CPU speeds and gov. that's slowing making the video lag.
1 with the Lag fix and one without? I wanna see a vs video. Ive done all lag fixs and have not seen a difference other that quadrant scores. I never had lag to beging with even coming from a Nexus one running FRF91 Froyo.
I dont get the lag thing. Maybe a video could help me see the difference.
Where is the lag? All my menus open quick, apps open fast etc. When I did the lag fix I tested everything and it just all around felt the same... Not slow becasue I dont think it is either way, but not faster than without the lag fix. I just dont know if its worth the 1 gig or 512 mb rom.
A video would be cool, im sure no one has this or even 2 vibrants to test this out with.. I think it would really make a statement if a video showed the difference...

I completely agree with you. I had a mytouch before this phone and have yet to notice any sort of lag at all. Of course the lag fix didnt do anything for my phone, it was already faster than anything else out there anyways. Personally I dont use the lag fix any more because I dont see the point.
I did not notice any lag either for about the first 72 hours I had the phone. But once I started installing all the apps I usually use it became quite apparent. To the point that I had to go back to using my myTouch Slide until I could take the time to root and apply the fix. I experienced lag mostly with the market, corporate email and really any app that was pulling info from the web. The market was most noticeable with it taking a full 10 seconds to get into the download area. Corporate email was the deal breaker, it would take 5 to 10 seconds to delete each email and move onto the next one. Multiply that by 100 to 150 emails a day and you would want to pull your hair out! Luckily the lag fix corrected almost all the lag for me in comparison to my MT3G Slide. Now when I delete an email it instantly deletes it and moves on to the next one, phew!
As for other people not experiencing the lag that is a mystery. Perhaps it has something to do with specific applications our maybe the number of applications being installed. All I know is for me personally the phone was unusable in its original state, and the lag fix has made all the difference for me.

I've had the phone since release and have aver 120 apps installed. Market downloads takes about 1 second. Every now and again some stuff takes a couple seconds, but only sometimes, most the time things are instantly ...
Don't know, like I said I think a videobwould be helpful ..
Or even a before lag fix test and a after lag fix test...

Yep I too have had no clue what people were complaining about with the lag. I installed the lag fix anyways and didn't notice a difference. My best friend just bought her Vibrant a few weeks ago and I compared to hers last week and noticed no difference in between the two identical Vibrants.

As others have stated I saw a huge lag in the market place, it was near impossible to navigate taking well over 5secs to load. I didn't have a huge issue with other apps, but some ran slower. I had a 870ish score in Quadrant.
I installed the LAG FIX, which if I remember right, is very similar to a ram hack. It basically moves it to write on the SD Card, which is much faster. I now score 2155 in Quadrant and the market place loading screen in there within 1-2secs of loading in.
I personally think its a great fix, not sure why yours didn't work.

I was pointing out that if you don't see a need, and do not see a difference, then don't use it. What do you care if someone cranks out a video showing the difference? Would you use it then, even though you don't see it yourself? I mean do you seek validation for the other things you do in life from strangers on the internet?

Anyways, I do not use my phone straight for like 16 hours like OP, but when I do use it, I use it as such:
- Stream Pandora over Wifi (well I try to use wifi, tmob's 3g is **** around where i live.)
- Browse Web / browse marketplace for new apps I'd like to try.
- Test out those apps.
- Text my friends and family bout **** to catch up.
- Switch back to ninja's live every 4-5 minutes to play out some more stamina points.
And guess what guys, while I am switching between these I notice pretty substantial delays, 3, 4, 5 seconds sometimes. With lagfix it might lag for a second, maybe two.

Nope. I never said I'd use it if I see a difference in a video. Now your putting words in my mouth saying now I need validation?
Dude take your negative butt outta here. I'm just saying I don't see no lag and wondering maybe I'm missing something.
****. Got a video? No cool, anywhere to check to see if I have lag and where the lag fix is supposed to blow my mind besides quadrant ....
Please no negativity ...
Edit: just tested with Pandora on and I'm right now typing away with ease. I actually believe its now faster with Pandora playing. Thanks for the tip..
For me the Lag Fix didn't make much of a difference. In fact I got random pauses on my phone more with the Lag Fix than I did with out it. The only difference between the two was the Market loaded faster and my games loaded slightly faster, like 1 sec faster. I used the Lag Fix for about 4 days then I got a low memory warning and couldn't get text.
Its def a step in the right direction but for me the cons out weighed the pros. Benchmarks are great and all but stable real world use trumps that.
I've heard a lot more negative issues from trying to do the lag fix. I understand WHY a fix is needed, but my phone performs more than adequate for me... MUCH faster than my Cyanogen Froyo G1 did.
Quadrant scores means absolutely nothing.
I too would like to see a video... mostly because I think it would point out that though there would be an increase in opening apps... thats it, apps open faster, wooptie doo.
I'm waiting for froyo since this will also incorporate samsungs fix for this (my guess since both have been announced for possible Sept release).
I don't think Zad's post was meant to be offensive.
Anyway, I have no lag on either my Bell or TMO Vibrant, although I confess that I don't install 100s of apps, but I do multitask and run intensive stuff like uncompressed 720p MKV files and The Sims 3!
I had my vibrant since launch day and have never had any real lag problems. But a few days ago when JAC released his new kernal w/ the lag fix, I thought I might give it a try. Boy am I happy I did it. Browsing websites are a lot faster. Some apps even open faster.
One app that was bugging me was ROM Manager. Don't get me wrong, I love the app, but it literally took a good 5 seconds to open (All I would see is a black screen for 5 seconds), but now with the lag fix, the app opens up in less than 2 seconds. I still see a black screen, but it's a huge improvement.
I also came from a MT3G and never thought the Vibrant had any type of lag. But after installing the Lag Fix, I can see what people are talking about now.
You can always try it and if you dont like it then nandroid back.

In the second post of the thread about RyanZa's One Click Lag Fix v.2
Q: Why does this lag fix work? Is it slowly destroying my phone?
A: Let's say an application counts from 1 to 10, and writes the value each time to disk.
Stock:
1 -> App tells RFS to write 1 to disk -> RFS writes 1 to disk -> RFS writes journal saying to changed the value on the disk.
2 -> App tells RFS to write 2 to disk -> RFS writes 2 to disk -> RFS writes journal saying to changed the value on the disk.
..
9 -> App tells RFS to write 9 to disk -> RFS writes 9 to disk -> RFS writes journal saying to changed the value on the disk.
10 -> App tells RFS to write 10 to disk -> RFS writes 10 to disk -> RFS writes journal saying it changed the value on the disk.
Total physical disk writes: 20. Speed: SLOW! Wear and tear on disk: HIGH!
Lag Fix:
1 -> App tells EXT2 to write 1 to disk -> EXT2 stores 1 in RAM.
2 -> App tells EXT2 to write 2 to disk -> EXT2 stores 2 in RAM.
..
9 -> App tells EXT2 to write 9 to disk -> EXT2 stores 9 in RAM.
10 -> App tells EXT2 to write 10 to disk -> EXT2 stores 10 in RAM.
..
EXT2 tells RFS to write 10 to disk -> RFS writes 10 to disk -> RFS writes journal saying it changed the value on the disk.
Total physical disk writes: 2. Speed: FAST! Wear and tear on disk: LOW!
This isn't exactly what is happening, but it gives you the general idea.

I think his commentary is more about JAC kernel + lag fix however.
First of all, id just like to say, i love my epic, however.... i had it for almost a month and today i tried the video camera which is supposed to be good... right? Well unless im doing something wrong, it looks like crap. If anyone is moving fast it has a HUGE trail behind them. Is there something i can do to fix this issue? i have everything on max settings.

I haven't tweaked any settings and it's perfectly fine. Try deleting the Data under Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Camera > 'Clear Data'.
See if it works better that way. My playback is incredibly high quality and I don't touch any settings.
Strange I've taken quite a few vids with my Epic and never had that issue. In fact they generally turn out quite well.
do this: wave your hand infront of it and see if you can see the tracers.... thats waht im talking about... so for instance, if i record someone breakdancing or something else that they are moving fast, its ALL tracers and looks terrible. P.S. that didnt work

for real? wtf... yeah im running the eb13 ext4 with the OC kernal... so how would i go about fixing this? downgrading back to dk18?
Yeap people are downgrading back to DK18 but I like froyo too much so I will wait for the fix
Yup, I would say screw that, and just downgrade back to Froyo dk28, it's what I have and until I see some decent roms with EB13 I will probably stick with DK28 until, I was OC'd with Genocide too, but that causing my phone to freeze sporatically,.
So I say stick with a dk rom.
There is absolutely no reason to"upgrade" to eb13 until there are some good custom roms. I'm running viper trinity with genocide kernel and my phone flies with no issues whatsoever. Why would I want to"upgrade" to a stock rom with evidently lots of bugs?
I say hold off, let these great devs work their magic, and then flash a true "upgrade."

Which camera App?
I have found the camera on the Epic to be very inconsistent. Sometimes the photos look great, rivaling a good point-n-shoot. But, other times, it's just not sharp. It doesn't help that the lens sticks out and seems to get dirty just from holding the camera.
Has anyone found a better camera app?
I was able to record a basketball game...and even zoomed in all the way and out while recrding while they were running and there was absolutely NO blur. It was buttery smooth.
Infact, whenever someone watches a video on my phone, they ALL say "...wow....your phone takes really clear vids!"
Unfortunately tho, I don't see that being the case anymore if I take a video in lowlight

It's not junk. It's the EB13 ROM causing problems. I'm still on DK28 and my cam is perfect....although a little grainy in low light.
The irony is that Samsung makes cameras, so one would think this is an area where they'd have an edge over HTC...
Am I the only one that has 720p recordings fail every time within the first 30 seconds.

It's the speed of the micro SD. Get a class 6 and it wont happen anymore.
Lag on preview
Are you looking at the resultant videos, or the screen when you're taking the movies? Because during video the screen is definitely laggy. As for the motion artifacting, well, you're not going to be able to catch even moderately high speed activities with a sensor the size of the Epic's in low light. That's because it looks like the Epic doesn't adjust the ISO when it gets dark, it just increases exposure time for each frame. This keeps the images from being terribly grainy, but also makes everything look like slomo watercolors when it gets dark enough. If you want good motion capture in low light situations, you're going to have to get something with a larger sensor. Actually, I'm surprised how nice the epic's movies look. I'm the first one to criticize samsung, but they did pretty well with the limited sensor size.
Does anyone know the speed on it, since a lot of my high read apps have huge issues with my transformer. I wanted to also know if there was anyway to point or force them to run off my class 10 card I got in it.
Its not a hard drive, its NAND flash memory and it should be as quick or quicker than your SD card

Weird, for some reason my tablet seems to be getting slower and it's driving me nuts. Now I am not sure if it's the custom rom or not, maybe I should just say nuts to it and get rid of root and reload the stock rom.
Is there a way to test the read wright speed so I can double check?

Do you have a task killer running? If you do, then that's most likely the culprit.

Nope, the biggest issues are when just pictures or chandroid is running. They move fine but slow to a crippled crawl in a bit, as for a task killer I don't have any unless it comes stock off the custom rom.
Honestly it is annoying as hell when it gets to a craw and then force close over and over.

No, they both work fine on my nook and my hd2 and my other tablet. It's just the newest one I got (ie the transformer) that I started to notice the issue. I worked with the dev from chandroid and we tried everything and he said as he looked over the crash report that there was nothing wrong with the app.
On the stock build of OS, he said it was an issue being caused by splashtop stuff. Is there anyway to rip every program out by the core needed to run and let me add them one at a time to test?

If you're rooted, you should just be able to uninstall stuff with Titanium Backup.. but make sure you backup the app first.

Aye, I got root. I was hoping to find out if there was a rom that was just barebones. So more or less do a full backup and then pull them all out and test it one at a time? I can just do a backup in clockwork mod.
I am just reaching a head with being annoying and asking for help.

Yeah, I'm not aware of a super barebones rom. Full backup and uninstall one by one is what I would do.

What is the best way to remove anything/everything? Cause if I got it backed up and if I blow the OS I can just do a recovery.
The easiest way would be to freeze the app with titanium backup, you could also just manually rename it or delete it.

Should be obvious. Does it look and act identical to the transformer?
Once thing I have found is that apps can run well on older versions of android but have issues with honeycomb. Like cut the rope, it crashes and is slower to load on the tablet but blazes on my evo. Asked the dev and he said its not yet developed for honeycomb.
My TFs internal memory is plenty fast.
Just root it without someones Rom. Stock would be your goal to see if a Rom affects it.
Watchdog from the market would help. It would show you what apps are running and how much they are using the Cpu
When I use Dolphin HD or Pad I can see when it's hanging up...not loading the page then..it dies lol freaking apps.

It wasn't obvious cause I wasn't at home. Yes it is running 3.0 it's a stable honeycomb build but I never use the nook much if at all.

I will try that, honestly I just want a way to see what's going on with it. I am not sure if it's using all the memory or what with all the images it loads. Since my problems always come from mass images loading.
Possibly just eating up your RAM then - the SSD shouldn't be (that) active if it's image loading and not saving.

Well like with just pictures, it's a big display of thumbnails for viewing your images. I know it can cashe the data to make it faster but that just seems to make it slower, as for chandroid the longer I use it the slower it gets. So maybe it's not purging old data?
