720P Recording Dropping Frames and Audio Not In Sync - EVO 4G General

After last update any new EVO 720p camcorder recordings are dropping frames, freezing on frames and the audio is mismatched.
Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix?

I've always had this problem. It's not my SD card either, cuz it's pretty fast.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is this 720p camcorder??

Ditto for me, always been crappy it's a shame too because it looks good until a 5 min video is out of sync by 30 second's.

HTC EVO 4G Camcorder Dropping frames
I've had the problem for over a year. Been to the Sprint store 5 times had hard resets done wiping my phone and no fix. They replaced twice and both new phones do the same thing. Went to the store again today because i'm due an upgrade and they will not do anything but give me another same phone unless I want to get the NEW HTC LTE that would cost $200. They told me that is the only way to fix it. That sounds like crap that I have to pay and switch to another phone to fix the issue.

I can't remember where I read this, but it said to fix this or at least make it better you need to change your read/write speed for your sd card. Haven't tried this myself though, because I don't use the camcorder.

I am using nitrous 1.55 with ca1ne's nitrous kernel. I just ran a few test videos on my own phone. At 128kb r/w under 30 seconds no problem over 30 seconds a little jittery.
After changing r/w speed same thing. I'm sorry that this didn't help out. I was just relaying something I had read, and never tested b/c I don't use the camcorder on my evo. Hope you get this fixed.

Move the readahead speed to 512kb, if it still lags, use 1024kb.. also, it could be the CPU speeds and gov. that's slowing making the video lag.

The main cap is probably being set in the radio, which leaves us with having to work around it to uncap framerates. Ideally if it's possible to get both uncapped framerates and hdmi-out working at the same time that's the solution that will be used.
I vote framerate for now... but hopefully there is some long term solution to both
I'll take framerate. HDMI would put up more of a fight if we could get full output of the android system instead of just selective video.
I still don't understand why the cap is a big deal. What can't you do that requires double the framerate?
I'd go with the fps because the hdmi is still restricted with output options anyway

Gaming without annoying lag and stuttering. Smooth transitions between home screens. Better live wallpaper performance. Feel as smooth overall as the HTC Aria

the device being capped at 30 fps wouldn't be a problem if the device wouldn't drop below 30fps but it often does during 3d games (the human eye typically perceives anything over 19 fps as fluid motion, without choppiness or studdering). so the main reason to uncap the framerate is because it gives you more wiggle room for the fps to drop without you noticing choppiness.
so if you were capped at 30 fps and a game caused a performance drop of 12 fps then you would now be at 18fps and you will notice choppiness,
but if the fps were unlocked to 44 (which is the novatek right now i think) and that same game dropped the 12 fps, you would now be running at 32 fps and you will notice no choppiness.
it can be hard for someone to understand sometimes as most people dont properly explain WHY having higher fps is nice instead of just sounding like iphone users "its so smooth!" like the guy above me lol.
I vote frame rate. Less than 1% of the time would be spent using HDMI for me anyway.
Didn't someone post this already ?

I couldn't care less about HDMI, disable it permanently to uncap the frame rate for all I care.

What about just maintaining 2 different kernels and if u wanna use hdmi you could easily flash one kernel then flash right back to the fps fixed kernel when your finished seems like the most logical way to go

Considering the OP is spear heading development on a dual Nova/Epson kernel, I think it is okay for the question to be asked on a very real basis...
the poll was our idea. we needed to see who wanted what. it came from a discussion we were having on #HTC-EVO (<~shameless plug) about the issues were facing and what to do about the community kernel. we figured the real answer would come from... well... the community. anyhow they both need to be fixed for there to actually be a fix. imo a broke isnt fixed so that was the discussion. anyhow hope that settles ths little debate.
Unless a future work-around includes being able to use the HDMI output for use with the actual phone interface and not just videos, I see no real point of using it at all.
So, definitely uncapped.
My only complaint about the Evo has been the laggy touch response. If uncapping the framerate fixes that, which the op's kernel that I flashed today has on my phone, I am willing to do without the hdmi. While I would prefer to have everything working, getting rid of the touch lag is the highest priority to me.

Not a prob. Let me know how it works out for ya.
I have not modified my phone in any way, and I have had this happen a few times as well on highest resolution videos.
Starts camera just fine.. then about 15 seconds into recording it says, "Warning, recording failed."
I would say maybe 2-3 times has this happened to me so far, and I have recorded dozens of videos, so it is a once in awhile thing. Still a bit annoying though.

Interesting, I may have to give that a try. I just tried four tests on stock Froyo (DK28), which I know isn't final, but I was hoping this issue would be fixed. On two of my tests, I recorded for longer than I ever have on the highest res (7 minutes and 8 minutes), I stopped both those recordings manually. My other two tests failed around 25 seconds and 35 seconds. So it's still hit-or-miss for me. I think backing up and reformatting the SD card is next.
I have this problem as well. I also tried reformatting my sd card in an attempt to cure my Epic of this disease to no avail. Anyone else have any suggestions? Or can it be the rom I'm using (Midnight 2.5)?
I tried reformatting as well. It seemed to work for a while but I'm getting the error again. Don't think it's the ROM, it's happening to me on stock Froyo the same as it happened on stock Eclair

Happens to me once in a while as well on stock 2.1
The problem is that the sd card isn't fast enough for reliable hd recording. If you lower quality it will work perfectly. If you reformat sd it will work in hd for a while. If you get a faster sdcard, you'll be set as well. Be sure to read speed test reviews and not just go by the speedclass claimed by the manufacturer. A lot are fast until they get some data then slow down significantly.

Another thing i notice is that with 2.1, the epic records in 3gp and with 2.2.1, it records in mp4, i believe. Can anyone confirm this?
I agree with the card too slow opinion. I did a side by side at the same time and resolution with the evo and epic. The epic always choked and the file wad corrupt. If I did short tests, it worked mostly. During playback and looking at the specifics with videospec, the evo compressed more and it's quality showed it, but it never stopped recording. Changing to a different brand card did not really fix anything.
This is also another reason why I dislike the epic. A second reason, kind of loosely relating to this topic, I don't like the epic with high quality audio recording problems. It studders and skips. The evo was amazing sounding and zero problems.
I'm giving the evo shift some SERIOUS thought right now. I am VERY tempted to go get one tomorrow morning before work.
The 16GB card that comes with the Samsung is only a class 2. It's not capable of keeping up with the recording. Get a class 4 or higher. The video will fail at random times due to varying bit rates of the scene that is being recorded. I bought a class 4, and so far haven't had any issues with the "recording failed". Although, I haven't used it enough since I got the card to be 100% sure.
What is the highest class our epics can use. I saw a class 10 but I read somewhere that the epic can run up to a class 6. Anybody know? Thanks

Desire HD 720p Lag

I've been getting a lag in my video's filmed at 720p quality from my Desire HD

Just as it hits 0:13 there is lag which is native on the phone video aswell.
I've filmed quite a bit since them and do get these laggy intervals when filming at 720p quality.
Am I seriously just going to have to accept defeat and film at 800x480?
Any known fixes?

I hope not. I recently got myself a brand new DHD, and can confirm i am experiencing the same issues when recording video -LAG.
I have no idea what the issue could be, I’m thinking maybe the mmc card could be the issue if its only 2x, i'd imagine 720p recoding will require higher speed mmc cards – im using the one which came with the mobile.
lower class of micro sd card perhaps?
With 1.5 GB of RAM, you'd think the DHD would be able to cache a whole lot more than 13 seconds of 720p 3GP video...
I don't remember where, but this has been discussed before, and they didn't think it was the memorycard that was the root of the problem.
To be honest i havent experience lag of any kind when videoing at 720p! Maybe a background task took some resources at the same time! Just a thought.

Hi, I experienced the same thing : Yahoo mail was runnning background
I also experience lag. Someone needs to inform HTC imo.
i have a working fix besides the 32k cluster format, which simply improves the sd card performance
i simply go to free advanced and i hit end all tasks (the quick version) before launching the camera
it works everytime and if i dont't apply it my film lags, its clearly a multi tasking issue something running in the background causing it
but try my method it works
i tried your solution hamdir and it actually does work! I'l test it some more tomorrow because right now its too cloudy and dark outside which isnt optimal conditions for recording with this phone.
edit: the sun came out so i took another clip. no lag
i think its a certain app that may be causing this. is there a way we can pinpoint exactly which one?
i doubt its one app, i don't know if maybe its htc sense and its sync settings or any app that runs in the background like messengers, either way i can't be bothered looking for it the solution is working and very easy
hopefully gingerbread will eventually solve it, since it has a feature that cleans applications footprint
i just noticed my solution was added to the compilation of DHD issues thread i will also mention it in the camera guide i'm currently preparing

I haven't tweaked any settings and it's perfectly fine. Try deleting the Data under Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Camera > 'Clear Data'.
See if it works better that way. My playback is incredibly high quality and I don't touch any settings.
Strange I've taken quite a few vids with my Epic and never had that issue. In fact they generally turn out quite well.
do this: wave your hand infront of it and see if you can see the tracers.... thats waht im talking about... so for instance, if i record someone breakdancing or something else that they are moving fast, its ALL tracers and looks terrible. P.S. that didnt work

for real? wtf... yeah im running the eb13 ext4 with the OC kernal... so how would i go about fixing this? downgrading back to dk18?
Yeap people are downgrading back to DK18 but I like froyo too much so I will wait for the fix
Yup, I would say screw that, and just downgrade back to Froyo dk28, it's what I have and until I see some decent roms with EB13 I will probably stick with DK28 until, I was OC'd with Genocide too, but that causing my phone to freeze sporatically,.
So I say stick with a dk rom.
There is absolutely no reason to"upgrade" to eb13 until there are some good custom roms. I'm running viper trinity with genocide kernel and my phone flies with no issues whatsoever. Why would I want to"upgrade" to a stock rom with evidently lots of bugs?
I say hold off, let these great devs work their magic, and then flash a true "upgrade."

Which camera App?
I have found the camera on the Epic to be very inconsistent. Sometimes the photos look great, rivaling a good point-n-shoot. But, other times, it's just not sharp. It doesn't help that the lens sticks out and seems to get dirty just from holding the camera.
Has anyone found a better camera app?
I was able to record a basketball game...and even zoomed in all the way and out while recrding while they were running and there was absolutely NO blur. It was buttery smooth.
Infact, whenever someone watches a video on my phone, they ALL say "...wow....your phone takes really clear vids!"
Unfortunately tho, I don't see that being the case anymore if I take a video in lowlight
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It's not junk. It's the EB13 ROM causing problems. I'm still on DK28 and my cam is perfect....although a little grainy in low light.
The irony is that Samsung makes cameras, so one would think this is an area where they'd have an edge over HTC...

It's the speed of the micro SD. Get a class 6 and it wont happen anymore.
Lag on preview
Are you looking at the resultant videos, or the screen when you're taking the movies? Because during video the screen is definitely laggy. As for the motion artifacting, well, you're not going to be able to catch even moderately high speed activities with a sensor the size of the Epic's in low light. That's because it looks like the Epic doesn't adjust the ISO when it gets dark, it just increases exposure time for each frame. This keeps the images from being terribly grainy, but also makes everything look like slomo watercolors when it gets dark enough. If you want good motion capture in low light situations, you're going to have to get something with a larger sensor. Actually, I'm surprised how nice the epic's movies look. I'm the first one to criticize samsung, but they did pretty well with the limited sensor size.

[Q] picture rendering time problem?

I didn't notice any problem like this in any of my other devices.
but whenever i take a picture with G2, and try to have a look at it in gallary,
the picture would first look really blurry at first.
and after 0.5~1 second, the the blur image would get cleaned up from top to bottom of the screen in multiple section, from right to left.
is this normal? or do i have a defect phone?
sorry for the multiple threads, my computer froze up for a second :/
It's normal. These are HUGE images and it is just essentially needing time to "load" it up and process it.
You can also try using a third-party app like Quick Pic which I think does a little better job of caching things.
But no, you don't have a defective phone just because of that.

1) Yea, its normal for the G2, but its hardly ideal. It is something that has been mentioned in reviews and hopefully a future patch fixes it and makes it more stable.
2) Yes, it would. I've owned routers flat out incompatible for whatever reason with some devices I own. You may have luck forcing the router into a particular channel and/or G-mode -- or upgrading its firmware.

I usually opt for 720p though just to conserve space and because the video usually ends up on facebook or youtube anyway so it isn't like 1080/60 is necessary.
