Federal crime

It is definitely a FEDERAL crime. But if you do find a way to do it... keep in mind that as soon as your phone pops up on the "grid" from 2 different locations at the same time they will most likely Flag and freeze your account (since they will assume someone else has cloned it.) and most likely (I'm guessing) ask for you phone back so they can exchange it.

The others are right. I refer you to the Wireless Telephone Protection Act:
http://www.ussc.gov/publicat/cloning.PDF

Why can't anyone just answer this question? I can understand the lecture and an answer, but the answer is never there.
Yes, you can clone the ESN. Google for a tutorial.

Changing IMEI on HTC Touch

Hi, I'm new to the site, and I wanted to ask if someone could please help me change my HTC Touch IMEI... Most of the solutions I found on google didn't work well, maybe because I'm using a newer SPL? Please help, I'm totaly new to this kind of things...
Thanks in advance
It's illegal in most countries.
I know, but I saw that there are some programs to edit it here, so I think I am allowed to ask...

It's illegal to record someonethat doesn't know it,but you can still buy spycameras... Not that I condone it, but the program isn't illegal.

First of all, I think you should just calm down. I have just kindly asked for a solution and you insult me. What a nice person you are, really... Even if it's not legal I'm sure it's not disallowed to post such things here, or most of the posts/programs I found here using google would have been deleted...
Dnt worry..just reported him
There is a thread some were by the name " Changin IMEI is going to get u a score "...look in that maybe its helpful for u
Quick Mod Note:
Just because something is illegal that doesn't mean you can't ask about it. Granted you probably won't get much legit help with it but asking the question is fair game.
There was a changer written by a member to help those who have "legit" use for such a tool. Of course the thread was allowed to live after much Moderator discussion about it but there were heavy warnings abotu the legality of doing such to your phone. Also note that this was back when the Wizard was king so I doubt it will work for newer devices.
Two Reasons for IMEI Change
1. You have a stolen phone
2. Your a terrorist
Thanks for the help, is the program iWizard? I found it, and well, it just tells me my IMEI is composed by numbers and LETTERS xD
Well, then my question becomes another one: is there a way to downgrade from SPL 2.60 (I think... how do I find it?) to a lower one, just to try if it works?
----------------
@obsydian
No, it's not a stolen phone neither I am a terrorist (what would a terrorist do with a changed IMEI?!? )... It's my father's old phone which he believed it got stolen, so he blocked the IMEI... now that ha has found it again (he left it in our house on the seaside, where I am writing from) he gave it to me because he bought a new one and he doesn't have the bill here, so he can't unlock the IMEI now. I can stil use it as a smartphone and I really like it, but I don't like taking 2 phones with me... so I wanted to fix it, at least temporary (we're going back home in August... -_-"). I don't want to do anything EXTREMELY illegal, just change the IMEI for a few months...
Some European countries (like Turkey) require you to pay import tax on phones purchased out of country before they can be activated. Basically instead of operating on a blacklist to block stolen phones your phone must be whitelisted to work. It gets whitelisted when sales tax (or import tax) is paid.
If you don't have an acceptable receipt (basically up to customs if they'll accept eBay/Paypal print-outs) then you can never get the device whitelisted as you can't pay the tax.
So is it completely legal? No.
Is it an understandable situation? Yes.
One of those gray areas where XDA-Devs thrives. No trying to steal but need to bend the rules a bit.

Sorry to bump, still looking for someone to help me downgrade it...
I'm in the same boat, though I need to change the IMEI on my Kaiser. iWizard doesn't even detect my phone.
Kyphur,
you said it right man..I am from Turkey, live in US.. I have a ATT tilt..when I went there in March I registered my phone..but only every two years I can register one phone..so it means I gotta use this tilt over there for 2 years..but i change my phone every 6 months..so this is a grey area..it is a f'ed up rule we have there in Turkey...

Carrier IQ Exposed in Video

TrevE created a video demonstrating the tracking ability of Carrier IQ. Very scary stuff - reads your SMS and copies to Carrier IQ before you even see it. Also completely bypasses https and reads supposedly secure browsing information and notes your location even if you opted not to share your location.
Video here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/11/30/smartphone_spying_app/
View it while you can. It will probably be taken down with a C&D from Carrier IQ soon. Can't have people knowing what they're up to. We've known about CIQ for a while now and many of the Devs are automatically removing it from their ROMs.
just posted the vid on my fb to help get the word around. everyone should post it to where ever they can, tell friends, family, anybody. just get the word out about this BS!

I'm with you. I did the same. Get it spread around to everyone. This is just disappointing.
They will always claim that its for "market research" and that in the end the "benefits" from this technology are greater that anything we can imagine and understand all together, but what I will never understand is why they have to do this in the shadow? why can't they ask for permission of the user to compile all this information?
I'm sure that if they ask for permission they will have a handful of people willing to participate. I think that a petition should be taken to the FCC to force carriers / manufactures in to disabling this once and for all, at least as long as the phone is purchased in the the US (thats where their jurisdiction is).
Rootkit is a rootkit they can call it what they want. I knew there was deception in this video by the CEO. They really need to be "sonified" and have a few rootkits thrown their way and if phone makers and carriers knew of this BS.. they do as well.
Class actions only help lawyers get rich, State legal by the Attorney Generals do nothing for the consumer either and the FCC wont have a clue as they are still in the "turn the phone dial with your finger to make a call" era.
Carrier iq is highly invasive and is not solely for "market research". No one needs to read your private txt messages for "market research" and some forms of.carrier iq on VZW have the ability to record phone calls. It is an invasion of privacy and plainly a virus, I will only run roms with iq fully stripped I don't need some "analyst" reading my txts between me and my old lady. And I don't care about any of the "benefits" they could ever imagine from it I care about my privacy.

The Evo 3D has a more in-depth thread on this. It's TrevE's original post on the subject.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247108
Because the topic spans many phones (over 160,000,000 by CIQ's own count) and different carriers, it's hard to keep track of the various forums and threads discussing this. But here's some encouraging news. The CIQ melt-down has made the major league media.

I have already obtained just over 2000 signatures but need a lot more. Please take a moment to read and help out, it is greatly appreciated. Don't forget to pass it along... Thanks!

Where it says "In emergency situations where texting isn't an option or there's no Wifi available, mobile FaceTime could be a lifesaver." In what situation can you not text but you can use your data connection to facetime? and you're deaf so you have to use hand signals right? So you may encounter a situation where you cannot text, but you can sign over facetime? That doesn't even make sense.
You basically want to legally force a company to alter their pricing because you feel that with a physical disadvantage you cannot utilize every aspect of their service?
I don't know about that one, unless I am missing something here. They are not discriminating against anyone per this, because you could just as easily say that every cable company is discriminating against blind people by not offering audio only TV shows...
What am I missing? How is AT&T discriminating?

lol what's up Mr O!
I personally don't care one way or the other, I think maybe I am just missing something.
I don't like ATT at all either, which is why I use T-Mobile. Maybe someone can explain where the discrimination is here so we're all clear. I just don't like the idea of forcing companies to adjust their pricing, like if I had a company I should be able to charge what I want and if it's too much people just won't buy from me...
Eespecially when there are many other phone choices and many other carrier choices (you could use an Android device with an FFC on T-Mobile for instance)

Hello orangekid,
To put it simply, yes they should alter pricing. Are you okay with paying for things you can't use?
By AT&T not allowing a deaf user face time access through their TAP plan (text accessibility program) but forcing them to buy a voice plan, wouldn't you agree this is a form of discrimination? Your comparison regarding blind people is a moot point... no one is forcing blind people to buy tv service they would most likely not use. AT&T however, tells their customers in order to use a service of ours (which deaf people can fully utilize) they have to pay for something they can never use, voice minutes. I take it you did not take the time to read the comments in the petition? At this point I have 2404 people who feel AT&T is discriminating, a lot of them are members of the deaf community. If your sole purpose was to just come here and try to ruffle some feathers, please refrain from doing so. If you don't agree or don't want to sign the petition, don't post. I'm not trying to be a jerk I just posted here for people who would like to support this cause. Thank you.

I am just trying to understand what you are actually against. I did read some of the comments, and it's not really that hard to get 2,000 signatures for ANY cause. Like I stated already, I may just have something confused here. You can choose to buy AT&T or not right? I mean why not get Sprint or Verizon or T-Mobile with an Android phone, why is FaceTime such a requirement?
Besides, isn't there a data only plan you can get on AT&T, like for people with iPads?
I'm being 100% honest when I say I'm not trying to "ruffle some feathers" I just don't see specifically what the discrimination is.
If your take is "if you can't see what the obvious discrimination is then I won't waste my time explaining it to you" or "I still think you're just trying to get under my skin and really do see discrimination but are only pretending not to" then it is what it is, but that's not my intention.
Maybe I just don't fully understand what your service is and why it can only be used on an iPhone or on AT&T.

Hello again Orangekid,
All you are doing is answering your own questions. You know why I am doing this, but continue to press the issue. I am petitioning AT&T to stop discriminating deaf people by charging them for something they can't use. (Voice minutes)
It's nice to have choices right? If AT&T works the best for some users, they should be able to use it without restrictions or additional charges for something unusable. If you can't seem to understand this cause, I encourage you to Google it so you can find the answer you are looking for. There are plenty of articles you may read regarding this topic. I have read many.
You obviously are not finding your answer here since you did not read my last post which states; if you don't support this or don't want to sign, simply don't post... by posting what you did.. You're obviously not understanding what I am saying, that's fine I guess I can't expect everyone to. I haven't answered any of my questions, nor have you; repeating the same mission statement over and over does not an answer make. You factually utterly ignored my question on how you could possibly find yourself in an emergency situation where you cannot text, but you can use your hands to activate FaceTime and use that instead (an example showing how it is indeed discrimination).
If this petition doesn't work out I suggest you switch to Android or another carrier, you might also have better luck avoiding an ETF by bringing up this topic as opposed trying to change their entire pricing system, which seems to be making them money.
I will stop posting in this thread since I won't be getting any of my questions answered here anyways.

To satisfy your insatiable thirst to find an answer you can't find here... Texting uses cellular minutes. FaceTime uses data. In an emergency, take an earthquake for example (there was a decent one not to long ago here in California) cellular lines were so jammed with people making calls to friends and family I was unable to make any calls nor send any texts. Data however was unaffected.
Now a hearing person could easily open the app and contact through FaceTime since most likely they have a voice plan. Why would or should a deaf person pay for voice minutes just to use this service? When they are the ones who would benefit the most from it. I have made this point in my last few posts which you have obviously ignored. Are there other options? of course there are but as I stated in my last post, which again you ignored. If AT&T and FaceTime work the best for some they should have access to all services without paying for something unusable..
I have answered your questions in the best capacity I can. You however do not want an answer You obviously just want to make a point. You are right and I am wrong. How's that working out for you? Just remember you started this, I kindly asked if you don't agree or don't want to sign please don't post. Something you have ignored again. I see a trend here.
My suggestion to you is to imagine yourself as a deaf person. Take away the ability to just pick-up a phone and call your family or friends. Take away the ability to just turn on the TV, walk away from it and still know what is going on. Try going to see a movie in the theater. Try turning on the radio, or listening to music. How bout a concert? Simple things us hearing individuals take for granted. You think it's hard finding work for a hearing person in this country, try finding one as a deaf individual. I understand this because I have seen and lived with it for 32 years, people do not choose to be deaf; why should they be charged for a service they can not use? If you really think that by coming in here and playing dumb; looking for an answer but not wanting to hear my response will sway my decision or make me rethink my stance, you sir (or ma'am) are wrong. I stand by this petition. Have a nice day.

It's not so much a matter of convenience as sign language is another language and their native language. If you asked someone from Mexico who just got done taking English classes if they would rather speak to everyone in English or Spanish they would say Spanish because they are fluent in it. Basically the point about deaf people is some don't do English very well to begin with but sign fluently. They can get confused by English grammar and it's very hard to understand when they do something like a text message, but they understand a video of a sign language sentence much better. Also, when they make bibles for deaf people, it is a video of a person signing the scriptures, not a written text. Why? Some deaf people do as well with English as I do with Spanish.
That's one reason. I hope I didn't offend anyone with this post but I was just making a point for Orangekid. If I did I do apologize as it was not intentional.

Sorry that's a little confusing.
I wasn't trying to make a point, I really was curious. Your explanation on the data/texting thing was a good one, was that so hard? I'm sorry you're taking this so personally. Despite our exchanges I have tried to stay polite, and assert that I wasn't trying to argue or just be difficult but really was trying to grasp what the issue truly was.
The fact that you blatantly refuse to believe this and have hard bent on attempting to create a scare-crow argument and attacking that as if this were a debate and not a mere request for clarification on the matter, as if repeatedly stating your arbitrary opinion of my purposes makes it true, shows me that you are indeed taking my efforts to merely truly understand the position as a personal attack on said position. I'm sorry but you seem to be arguing with someone else and putting their face on my words. Let me be as clear as I possibly can so we can settle the matter once and for all.
1) I did no understand if the petition was to change AT&T's normal pricing policy or if there was a special pricing plan that included features you didn't want that you wanted changed.
2) I did not understand why a deaf person would HAVE to use an iPhone and HAVE to use FaceTime and HAVE to use AT&T, and I wondered if a similar petition existed for the other "big 3" with their pricing and packages. This led me to believe that I must misunderstand the entire petition.
3) I am not implying that your purposes are malevolent, communistic, naive, or anything other than what you state, I am merely seek to fully understand them.
Keep in mind you posted a thread in a public forum urging people to share your views and sign your petition. When you do such, you open yourself to queries about the thread and you cannot "kick out" anyone who merely asks a question about it. if I were offering a counter-position, which I stopped after the first post because I began to doubt exactly what that position was, I would still have a right to post it here. I can see how my first post here can be taken that way, but as I said I then wondered if I completely mistook the entire position.
I don't have a problem with you, this thread, this petition, deaf people, or any other demographic. I'm sorry this blew up out of proportion and I'm sorry you mistook me and that you are taking things so personally.
No matter how many times and in what ways you state that my motives are to "prove a point" or stir trouble as it were, it is untrue. I wished only to give further stage to this matter and to clarify it.

[Q] i9505 IMEI code

Hi everyone,
the police in my little city is investigating a murder (which is here a real rarity) and i don't know how they come to me and invite me to answer qeustions as a witness but anyway they have also noted down the IMEI code of my phone
So now i am interested in why they did that, and what can they all do with my imei code, track me, hear my phone calls etc ?
Also is there a way i could change the imei because i don't feel comfortable now :S

Possibly, but not very easy
First is illegal
at the same time if someone is following you, you will need to change the sim card
on the other hand, the police are - they will still find a way to reach you
Are you guilty?

Ooooh someone's trying to hide something me thinks
LoL
I am 23 years old, i am studying i have no police records and everyone who knows me knows is laughing about that i was questioned about that case because everyone knows that it is ridiculous that i have anything in common with that
I just feel irritated because i have no clue why they questioned me and i was interested in knowing for what exactly they need my imei code, i have no problem with it that they trace me or hear my phone calls just because i have nothing to hide, but it is really uncomfortable when you know that someone takes your privacy ...
If i had something to hide, would i post with my account where all my info is?

I'm concern about one's safety on this site!

I contacted the moderator:
I have the strangest suspicion that this member, kp263 was trying a scam on me. I posted a message regarding help to fix my bricked LG D858HK, and kp263 contacted me by private messaging requesting. After I sent my number, I received a message, saying; I'm always offline on WhatsApp. I responded; I normally turn my phone off 12.00 am to 8.00 am UK time because I don't want to be disturb at those times when sleeping, but I'm available all the other times. I also mentioned; I'm using another phone, as the LG is bricked (of course). I started to get suspicious and asked; how are you going to repair phone in the UK when you're in India? But, I didn't get a reply, so I contact him again. So he informed me that was away for a few days.
Could this member have been leading me on to a scam? Check this member out - could be dangerous...! But Moderator doesn't seem to be concerned...

My response to moderator:
Speculation!? As a moderator, you don't seem to be concerned regarding the safety of users on your site! This dude wanted to gain access and control my PC and could have stolen information via a piece of software he wanted me to install, and you're not concern about that!? Or, could it be that he may be connected with you/your site?
The problem is with my phone, so why did he wanted to access my PC? Why didn't he send me the instruction by private message (like I asked him to), or better yet, publicly, so that others can see, who may be experiencing same or similar problems, so they can refer it his cure? Why didn't he respond to several questions...I'd put to him regarding my concern of him accessing my PC?
If you're not going to check him out, I'll have to make this public so that others can be aware of this

you should never give out your number and install software you don't know what it does.
Use common sense, you made a mistake to give out your number and if you installed software you don't know what it does nobody else to blame but yourself.
Sorry to sound harsh but you need to be careful what you do as well and protect yourself

I'm sure there are novices that use this site that doesn't know the risks... But, I'm not a novice as far as the internet is concerned. I know the dangers and this why I didn't download the software and questioned the dude.
So I'm in a jam with my phone and asked for some genuine help and was hoping I would get it in return, at least so I thought. These scammers should look into by the moderator/s and not ignored but rooted out; because not everyone would be aware of this sort of practice on xda, and is not a matter of common sense. Are you saying you've never given a stranger your mobile number? I sure you have. So where is your common sense that? :silly:

Do you mean this user https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=7532374 ?
Do you have any idea how many accusations are made similar to this on this site of almost 8 million users? So YES we need proof of wrong doing. The message you reported was a simple Whatsapp request. No where did he ask for access to your computer. He did suggest he could fix your problem with Teamviewer. Generally these members are not scammers but are trying to sell you their repair service. When we have proof of attempted sales, then the accounts are removed.
Thank you for bringing this member to our attention and adding to our investigation already in progress.
Have a nice day.

This dude was shady... If I wasn't alert and aware of these type of scams and fraud, I would have let him have his wicked way and could have scammed me. I not gonna deal with someone in India when am in the UK and especially the way he wanted me too. No way!
As a good and responsible citizen and trying to help to stomp out scamming and fraud, my original message to you was to make you aware of the situation..., but your replied was sarcastically... When I get scamming emails and forward them on to the banks, etc, they thank me for informing them - unlike you. Your statement above (Thank you for bringing this member...) would have been just nice in the first place. There is another guy on your team (who was very nice - not sarcastic) that I sent the message to in the first place but he instructed me to contact the moderator because he didn't deal with that area. So, it seems that there are nice guys amongst you all.

Sure...but as I said...they generally try to sell you a service under the radar of XDA moderators because selling of anything on this site is not allowed except in the paid app section. That is the shady part. We remove these types daily once we get evidence of them asking for money. The repair is usually legitimate. Thanks for adding to our evidence against this member.
So others thank you and do nothing, but I tell you we need evidence and then do something...which would you prefer. By the way I am still awaiting an answer to that PM.
@Soundboy There are many legitimate people out there that will help people through teamviewer out of the kindness of their heart. So next time present more evidence than a Whatsapp request and offer to go on teamviewer. Back in the Epic 4G days of 2011 I helped someone through it and know of another good friend that helped members through teamviewer all day long and only for whatever they wanted to donate to him, even if it was nothing. So your paranoia was insufficient to act on without evidence.
I 100% agree with @DJ_MiX . I can't believe I have to say this, but, this world is full of nefarious people out to do you harm. If you expect any website to be able to protect you from every single user, you are in for a shock. Welcome to the internet. :highfive:
Receiving a private message instead of answering your question publicly in the forums should have been a large red flag and warning sirens for you. That's like getting cold called at your house and the person asking for financial information.
These forums are not for one-on-one help. They are for public questions, answers, and discussions so that everyone benefits. I personally would only use private messaging with users who have a long history on the forums. And even then, there's rarely a reason to do so.
You seem nice and you seem like you mean well, just be vigilant and do your due diligence whenever possible. Evil folks prey on the naive. I will personally not be able to help you out with your particular issue, but good luck!

Maybe paranoia... But you haven't seen my messages I sent to him via Whatsapp, asking for his legitimacy... But of no surprise, he didn't respond to them.

I'm always aware and suspicious about private messages, emails, letters and phone calls I get from people I don't know offering their services, e.g. like paying upfront. I always tell them to take a hike! I get them all the time; even from these pretty-young-nice-figure-babes on facebook. It's like; "You're a gorgeous babe; but why you want to friend an old fart like me, old enough to be your granddad or even your great grandad?" They're gone, man! So yes; I'm an internet savvy and on the money! :highfive:
My initial message was only to make you guys aware... I do it all the time; forwarding suspicious contacts to Banks, PayPal, Facebook and Action Fraud. I'm only just trying to make the world a bit safer

Regarding your PM... I've already responded to it yesterday via reply to the email. But since it seems you haven't received it, here it is again: I did google Teamviewer...and that is why I didn't download it to my PC. And yes, I do get lots of Prince in Nigeria..., etc, etc and phone calls too but I don't fall for them. So no, not foolish. I'm not new to the internet but on your site. In fact, I'm a savvy on the internet and know of the dangers.
The account countfox: because when I first join I made a spelling mistake with my username and after about 4 times of asking Brendon to edited he failed to deal with it, so I set up another account. But it was changed by another person in the end after I contacted him. So, I kept on using Soundboy because my message was already on it. If there was a way for me to edit or delete them myself I would have done so instead of relying on you guys. Anyway, you can delete both of them because they no use to me now.
Cheers!
