Hi,
I currently have a SIM Unlocked G1 on the Rogers network in Canada, and I want to root it to install unsigned apps. I've seen tutorials all over the place for rooting a G1, but what I want to know is if I will lose my SIM unlock or not. I already had a close call when I did a factory reset, but a little bit of quick thinking on my part fixed that problem.
I just wanted to find out before I go and have to spend another $20-$30 for another code.
Thanks in advance!

The answer is 'no'. If this wasn't self-evident to begin with (and/or you were too disinclined to use the Search function) then I suggest you NOT root.

What the heck is an "unsigned" app that you couldn't install without root? I have not heard of such a thing.

Hi. I finally bought the Xperia x1i a few days ago. But i noticed it said "Verizon" on the back. Also, there are a few Verizon apps like "Verizon Live", which seems i cant remove.
Right now im not in my country so X1 couldnt fully recognize my network, but it did answer to my Minutes Credit request properly.
Im not sure if this is fully unlocked, and if it is, if there could be any problems with my cellphone using ANY of its respective functions. Would it??
Please answer i would thank you a lot!!!
If the phone is accepting your non-verizon sim then it isn't locked.
However your ROM may have some custom verizon settings which you don't like, most can be removed via registery editing.
Another option is to head over to the ROM section of this forum, you find ways to install the generic ROM, or even custom made versions.
Oh well i thought of that! But how risky is it to install roms for someone who simply has no idea of that or programing? Im not stupid, but i would be good if there was a step by step tutorial. Are there any?

Reportedly, first date that AT&T will give unlock codes is May 9th.
also you can try unlock it trought fastgsm
I've unlocked mine by FastGsm... all OK!
Thank you for the quick response,i did comeacross fastgsm last night researching about how to unlock the focus
Sent from my LG-P509 using XDA App
I've used this company for unlocking a Focus and Captivate succussfully.

For the Focus you will still have MMS issues unless it's Developer Unlocked and you can use necessary tools to change the MMS settings.
people still use mms? hehehe is it only for the focus or for all WP7 devices?
I think just the Focus...
So I will be getting my slightly used samsung focus locked to AT&T on May 4th. Do you guys suggest that I wait for the rumored unlock codes from AT&T on May 9th, and will it be free and available to all users in the first place? Also the phone doesnt not have the NoDo update yet and am planning to buy one of the sandisk class 4 sd cards. So which will be the right order with respect to unlocking, sd card installation and NoDo updating? thanks

Hi thanks for your help. I just took a look at the "prevent relocking" page and its quite a long thread with many "strange language" am not used to! It says requirements include "Dev Unlocked Samsung Phone and XAP Installer". Am a newbie so if someone could simplify this to me and possibly provide me with a download link for the requirements. thanks

That's what I've tried to spared you, a long read, for the relock part.
Basically, from zero, you need to unlock with Chevron first. This is no easy task and unfortunately you do have to read all about it in the original thread.
Then, after unlock, go to the thread I mentioned and from the 1st post download SamsungTools.zip and deploy SamsungTools.xap to the phone. it and after that check in Chevron if it's still unlocked. If not, unlock again, and Zune should no longer re-lock the phone, and you can safely update to NoDo.
If he only cares about SIM unlock, the |Cheron Dev unlock is unnecessary, overkill and unrelated.

Agreed with you that the request was not very clear and a bit offtopic but I assumed it's about Chevron unlock and not SIM unlock because of

I don't see how that could be interpreted as SIM unlock. Unlock has double meaning (developer/network) across WP7 forums and that might be confusing for many.

Sorry guys for the confusion-was actually talking about sim unlock. I thought the thread was about sim unlock so I didnt bother to be specific. I was just worried because I had read elsewhere that some people got their sim relocked to at&t after the NoDo update thats why I wanted to know what to do right! So I guess I don't have to bother about the relocking stuff anymore right? And just to confirm; the order is install sd card, unlock sim, and install NoDo right? Am so excited...my phone will be arriving on Monday!!
Personally I would do the sim unlock last. That way the last step is unlock and you don't need to worry about possible re-locking during No-Do. I would actually install No-Do first, then install SD card since No-do seems to help with compatibility issues, and then if the SD card is stable, sim unlock the phone.

What method of root did you use? As far as I know the only one that unlocks is this one, it's what I used..

SIM unlocking is done with the step that involves 'gfree'.
gfree is a utility that unlocks your SIM and CID set to 111111. In other words, unlocked. If you ran this program then you are sim unlocked if it said SUCCESS or COMPLETE or whatever it says. If that step said fail, make sure you do it right and try again, but thats the one that unlocks it.
Hey, I am posting this since I have gone through some threads and they don't really seem to have the answer that I am looking for.
I have a HTC DEsire 816 a5-chl with Security_On.
I'd want to to
i) Get s-off
ii)Root the Device
iii)have custom ROM installed(or a stock one) currently on lollipop 5.0.2
iv)and Perhaps network unlock using CID
Is there anyone who may show me any of the above steps. Some may overlay others, for instance, getting s-off and rooting.(I hope I am right in saying this) Would flashing a new radio network unlock the device?
Kindly feel free to correct me and guide me on the above steps please. thanks.
Slightly confused guy.

I just now saw your post and if your still interested in getting help with gaining root, S off and flashing custom roms I'd be happy to walk you through it as I have done all 3 on the same device. As for the CID changing I did research on that but it's a niche reason as to why you would actually use it but I did a lot of research on it and would pass on what I've learned there as well. Just let me know.
Is there a way to get s-off for free?
S-off
S-No
?

Can you help me out how to S-OFF my phone, I'm Stuck at that part.
I paid the $25 for the Sunshine app and it gave me true S off. That's the only way to get it. There are write protection mod scripts that fool the system partition to allow root apps like Link2SD to run at boot up but I never messed with that particular hack as it's still not true S off.

After that, what steps should I take to actually enable the GSM part, since this is CDMA, might I enable to use GSM SIM cards?

Dude, if you can't do a little research, then i strongly suggest you avoid attempting to modify your phone. Sorry to sound rude, im having a bit of a face palm moment from your question.
You're not sounding rude. A lot of people on this forum wants to be spoon-fed, and that's not going to help them in the long run. They need a smack on the head and get taught how to search.
If you can find a way of unlocking the bootloader you could give it a try. Probably brick you phone yes.

You will brick your phone. Don't do it.

Just do it and let us know what you think about you new paperweight
What do you mean "just do it"?
How would you do that when the bootloader is locked?

I think he was trying to point out that it should go without saying that you shouldn't even think about flashing other firmware than the one designed for your actual model. It never ends well.
I think he just wants to root his phone, and thinks that somehow this process involves getting the single sim firmware.
To be able to root you first need to unlock the bootloader. Currently only allowed by LG on the unbranded US and EU versions. NOT possible on any other version, unless someone finds an unofficial way around it in the future.
I haven't tried it, but I doubt you will brick it, most likely it will just reject it, but I agree it's not a good idea to try it without knowing.
All those guys talking about spoon feeding people... if you know the answer to the question just answer it, if you don't know the answer shut up.
I reached this thread doing research and rather than finding information I find your rant.
