i would like to know since i will be using this in asia by june, has anyone been successful in getting unlock codes from ATT directly? or via unlocking websites and if via website which ones actually work?
Reportedly, first date that AT&T will give unlock codes is May 9th.

I've unlocked mine by FastGsm... all OK!
Thank you for the quick response,i did comeacross fastgsm last night researching about how to unlock the focus

I've used this company for unlocking a Focus and Captivate succussfully.

For the Focus you will still have MMS issues unless it's Developer Unlocked and you can use necessary tools to change the MMS settings.
people still use mms? hehehe is it only for the focus or for all WP7 devices?
I think just the Focus...
So I will be getting my slightly used samsung focus locked to AT&T on May 4th. Do you guys suggest that I wait for the rumored unlock codes from AT&T on May 9th, and will it be free and available to all users in the first place? Also the phone doesnt not have the NoDo update yet and am planning to buy one of the sandisk class 4 sd cards. So which will be the right order with respect to unlocking, sd card installation and NoDo updating? thanks

Hi thanks for your help. I just took a look at the "prevent relocking" page and its quite a long thread with many "strange language" am not used to! It says requirements include "Dev Unlocked Samsung Phone and XAP Installer". Am a newbie so if someone could simplify this to me and possibly provide me with a download link for the requirements. thanks

That's what I've tried to spared you, a long read, for the relock part.
Basically, from zero, you need to unlock with Chevron first. This is no easy task and unfortunately you do have to read all about it in the original thread.
Then, after unlock, go to the thread I mentioned and from the 1st post download SamsungTools.zip and deploy SamsungTools.xap to the phone. it and after that check in Chevron if it's still unlocked. If not, unlock again, and Zune should no longer re-lock the phone, and you can safely update to NoDo.
If he only cares about SIM unlock, the |Cheron Dev unlock is unnecessary, overkill and unrelated.

I don't see how that could be interpreted as SIM unlock. Unlock has double meaning (developer/network) across WP7 forums and that might be confusing for many.

Sorry guys for the confusion-was actually talking about sim unlock. I thought the thread was about sim unlock so I didnt bother to be specific. I was just worried because I had read elsewhere that some people got their sim relocked to at&t after the NoDo update thats why I wanted to know what to do right! So I guess I don't have to bother about the relocking stuff anymore right? And just to confirm; the order is install sd card, unlock sim, and install NoDo right? Am so excited...my phone will be arriving on Monday!!
Personally I would do the sim unlock last. That way the last step is unlock and you don't need to worry about possible re-locking during No-Do. I would actually install No-Do first, then install SD card since No-do seems to help with compatibility issues, and then if the SD card is stable, sim unlock the phone.

once unlocked it will not relock itself.. no worries.. as far as unlocking solutions I mused mobile in canada but I think you should e-mail them with the IMEI and see if they have a unlock code for it. what carrier was it locked to? that would help narrow it down

Yes! i unlocked my X10 with them cuz I couldn't unlock it anywhere else. Trust me, I've tried all of the online remote unlocking services. HTCCode has the cable unlocking method, for $40, it's not cheap but it's really worthed. I recommended it to a lot of my buddies here in the forum and all of it worked. I've been using my X10 for about 3 months without any problem now hope this helps.
Hi All,
There have been many confused members (especially the noobs) who do not understand the difference between unlocking and debranding so I wanted to start this thread to clarify this matter once and for all.
Debranding/Flashing: : This is when you flash some firmware other than your original operator's FW. For example, if you have an AT&T or O2 branded X10, when you flash/debrand generic fw (or any other fw of your choosing) you simply get rid of the "branded" software pre-loaded on your phone. Hence, the term "de-branding". This does not mean that your phone is unlocked. You will still have to use your original operator's SIM card, like AT&T or O2, to use your phone EVEN AFTER flashing/debranding your handset.
Unlocking: This is when you "network unlock" your phone and are able to use it with any GSM operator you choose other than your original operator. For example, you have an AT&T or O2 branded X10 and you want to use it on T-Mobile US or UK, can you do that after simply flashing/debranding? The answer is NO. Why? Because your phone still requires a special code to be entered before it becomes network unlocked. For further reading, please go here.
Rooting: Rooting is a process that allows users of cellphones, and other devices, running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's Linux subsystem, similar to jailbreaking on Apple devices running the iOS operating system, overcoming limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on such phones. Rooting makes it possible to use custom versions of the Android system such as CyanogenMod, supporting features unavailable in stock ROMs. It also allows for newer versions of Android not supplied by the original device manufacturer. Source: Wikipedia
Debranding, unlocking and rooting are mutually exclusive.
FAQs:
1. If I flash to generic firmware using Bin4ry's flash tool, will I unlock my phone?
No, you will simply debrand your phone but, you will still need to get the unlock code.
2. If I debrand my phone and then unlock it but, I would like to go back to my original branded firmware, will my phone become re-locked to that network again?
No, once you unlock your phone, it will remain that way no matter what firmware you flash in the future.
3. How do I know if my phone is network unlocked?
The simple way is to pop in another operator's SIM card, for example you have an AT&T branded X10a, then you can use a T-Mobile SIM card. If your phone reboots and you do not get a "enter code" screen and you see that you are connected to the T-Mobile network then your phone is network unlocked and can be used with any GSM operator.
Another way is to go into the hidden service menu. In the lock screen (the one with the swype animation) press the following sequence of buttons (Home, Back, Back, Home, Back, Home, Home, Back). If you are on 1.6 replace Home with Menu. Then go to service info --> SIM lock. In the top line, if you find this [X] Network 10, then your phone is locked. If you find this [ ] Network 10, then your phone is unlocked.
4. How can I get my unlock code?
There are a few sites from which people were successful in getting their unlock codes like MobileInCanada and CellUnlocker. There is also a thread by Xda-member "Lancez" here who can provide unlock codes for a fee. Currently, there is no known method of unlocking your phone for free.
I hope I have clarified this matter for everyone.

Well, thanks for the info; however, what I wanted to know was the "technology" behind the lock codes which can survive after flashing. What do they use to keep them safe? In which part of the software is the code stored? or most likely, the code should be hardcoded then.

I think there was a typo above. It is more like 9% of the time. Lol. Unless you type exactly word for word the results often send you to completely different forums, even though it says "search this forum". Test it yourself... Search using XDA search button and then do a Google Search. Google is much better, for me anyway.

I don't think that's correct. My x10 has 0 next to Sim but it's definitely locked to t-mobile. There's an X in the box next to where it says network for locked phones.

The [X] means it is locked. The 0 means that you have 0 attempts left to enter the unlock code. You get 10 in a new phone. Did you enter the codes too many times or did you buy your phone pre-owned?

Hi I want to sim unlock my hd2, and then install Nandroid operating system onto it. Will this effect the sim unlock? , was talking to a man in a shop and he said it might. Its one I have for sale and someone wants this doing to it, Its locked to T mobile uk at the moment.
p.s did do a quick search but am at work so shouldnt be on her
Thanks
Short answer is NO.
If you want to sim unlock your device you need to contact your provider.
Go to a store where they can unlock it for you or buy a code on the internet.
Good Luck
thanks for the reply, but what i meant was if i have it unlocked, then install nandroid will this remove the sim unlock?
No, i can guarantee you it wont. I got mine unlocked and had no problem switching SIM cards in WP7, Android or WM 6.5 . Cheers.
quick question to anyone that can answer this....
can you sim unlock while android is installed..i called tmobile requested the code but dkno if i can unlock with android running
I'm not 100% guaranteed, but i think that even runing android you can unlock your phone
I'd assume that you would be able to once Android recognizes your IMEI so yeah it should work.

the unlock will be?
Let's say this once, for the benefit of anyone else who reads this thread:
SIM UNLOCKING YOUR HD2 IS UNAFFECTED BY ROM CHANGES.
Once you SIM unlock the device, regardless of operating system currently installed, it will stay SIM unlocked even through ROM changes, including WP7/Android/WM6.5/etc/etc.

You're both incorrect here, unlocking usually refers to a sim unlock, therefore flashing a new ROM will have no effect on unlocking the phone. As the people above you said, you have to buy an unlock code, input the new sim then enter the unlock code (or something along those lines, haven't done it before).
Also, why bother reopening an old, solved thread simply to post an answer to a question which has already been answered? If you're trying to get 10 posts, do it on the newer threads, not the ones from early 2011.

Since you have the unlock code, it will be almost the same thing. All you do is insert the non-att sim card and it will ask you to enter the unlock code. Enter the code and now you have an unlocked phone.
