Hi,
I currently have a SIM Unlocked G1 on the Rogers network in Canada, and I want to root it to install unsigned apps. I've seen tutorials all over the place for rooting a G1, but what I want to know is if I will lose my SIM unlock or not. I already had a close call when I did a factory reset, but a little bit of quick thinking on my part fixed that problem.
I just wanted to find out before I go and have to spend another $20-$30 for another code.
Thanks in advance!

The answer is 'no'. If this wasn't self-evident to begin with (and/or you were too disinclined to use the Search function) then I suggest you NOT root.

What the heck is an "unsigned" app that you couldn't install without root? I have not heard of such a thing.
EDIT: Apologies! This should have gone under General topic!
I bought an unlock code for my phone. I told them it's a Hero I got from Telus and I gave them my IMEI number. They sent me a code. I slipped in a Rogers SIM card and booted the phone. It says the network is locked. I put in my unlock code but it keeps saying "Incorrect password".
Do you think the fact that I'm running a custom ROM (Villain 5.3) could be the problem?
Or, come to think of it, could it be because I flashed an updated radio?
Hero has only 1.5 android stock, so you need a ROM that is 1.5 also. I came to this problem to...
Nandroid backup
Wipe
Flash 1.5 rom
Do unlock sh!t
Restore previous ROM
Voilà!
n00b001, I don't know who you are, but I could kiss you right now!
I restored MCR 3.1, unlocked my phone using the code I bought, restored VillainROM 5.3 and, like you say, voilà!
Thank you so much! Merci beaucoup!
Have yourself a great weekend!
Just wondering, will I ever have to use that code again (if I update the radio for example) or is my phone unlocked forever?
Interesting, I didn't know this. Well, I highly doubt you'll have to use that code again. my phone is unlocked and I've updated radio and everything
Nah, the unlock code is permanent. You can reflash a complete original factory ROM including SPL etc. and the phone will still be unlocked.
Good tip about needing 1.5 to unlock though.

Is there no way to unlock a hero after installing a custom rom without downgrading?
Sold phone and forgot to unlock it :s
I used gold card method to root and installed Floyo.

Yeah, so I was asking if the downgrade is essential for unlocking.
I'm hoping there's another method, as the problem is that I've sold and posted the phone already.
I wrongly assumed rooting via gold card performed an unlock , as I did test it with Virgin and Orange sim cards, and could connect to the networks and make calls fine, but buyer's having problems with an O2 sim.

Unlock code worked fine on custom rom.
Hi Guys,
I'm about to buy a Motorola Atrix 4G sim-unlocked phone here in India, through eBay. I got confirmation from the seller that it is an imported phone from US which has been unlocked for international carriers. I've a few questions now:
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
I can see that there is a lot of community support for this phone and I would love to root it and install custom ROMs on it. Please clarify me on the above points.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Karthik,
I have also bought through Ebay.
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
A) If the phone is sim unlocked than most probably it has unlocked bootloaded. You can check this by restarting the phone, if UNLOCKED is displayed at the top during booting, then its bootloaded has been unlocked.
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
A)I have used the same method for unlocking my phone.

Thanks for the reply. I do not see the UNLOCKED text while booting up. so probably the boot loader is still locked.
In the thread which you used to unlock, there is no step to root the phone after unlocking the boot loader. After unlocking, the next step is installing a custom recovery. So how do we root it? I don't want to explore multiple threads as the instructions are confusing. Please help!
Thanks in advance.

This is NOT TRUE..
Sim Unlock and Bootloader Unlock are different.
Bootloader Unlock will allow you to install any other firmwares. This will display Unlocked message on bootup.
SIM unlock will allow to use other carriers SIM card other than Orginal carrier.
For Ex. if you have ATT US Atrix, you wont be able to use it for other networks until you perform SIM unlock. This will not display Unlock message on bootup.

N00b questions
Few more n00b questions Please ignore my questions above. I've consolidated all of them below so that multiple replies can be avoided.
I've rooted and installed custom ROMs on my LG P500 for more than a year now and I'm quite familiar with the process. But this locked boot loader thing is really confusing me and there are so many threads with different methods. Really confused I've listed down all my questions below, pls help me:
1. Can I root my Atrix without unlocking the bootlaoder? I want to get rid of the so many AT&T apps as my phone is sim-unlocked and I don't need them here in India. This page from rootzwiki has a method to root a phone with locked bootloader. Can I follow this?
2. The same page has a method to unlock the bootloader. In that, it is mentioned that the SBF flashing need not be done if the phone runs gingerbread. The steps direct us to run the unlock command if we're on GB. But on all the methods here in XDA, the SBF flash method is mentioned even for GB 2.3.4 phones. This thread for example. which one to follow?
3. I'm planning to follow the above thread, but in that thread, there is no step to root the phone, after unlocking the bootloader. The next step given there is to install custom recovery. So what do I do to root it?
Please clarify these questions. Thanks in advance.

sorry for a bit of a thread hijack,
I'm going to be in India for a conference, can anyone recommend a prepay provider that works with AT&T Atrix and has reasonable data packs? Don't care about text/minutes, just need mobile data with decent speed & price. Bonus if it comes with a pony?

1.Rooting a phone is different to unlocking the bootloader. So yes when you root the boot loader will remain locked. Unless you use a script which automatically roots and also unlocks the boot loader.
2.I would follow the example thread
3. You can use this thread to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
I would recommend you read this thread…its for beginners but has all the information you'll need

Atrix 4g Unlocking and Upgrading.
Hi there guys!
I am planning to buy Atrix 4g through Ebay.
The listing on ebay says that the phone is unlocked?
I am pretty much new to all this and all that I wanna know how do I get rid of Motoblur without putting any custom roms.
PS I heard that Moto has released gingerbread but I am afraid if I update with Motorola Software Update, it will re lock the phone?
Hi
I use atrix in mumbai..
The phone which you will get from ebay will be sim unlocked...that means you can use indian sim cards on the phone
To get rid of all blur software i would suggest you to install a custom rom from the forums..for which you will need to unlock bootloader root your phone and install custom recovery
Youll find tutorials for these in the forums
Cheers!

Hey, I am posting this since I have gone through some threads and they don't really seem to have the answer that I am looking for.
I have a HTC DEsire 816 a5-chl with Security_On.
I'd want to to
i) Get s-off
ii)Root the Device
iii)have custom ROM installed(or a stock one) currently on lollipop 5.0.2
iv)and Perhaps network unlock using CID
Is there anyone who may show me any of the above steps. Some may overlay others, for instance, getting s-off and rooting.(I hope I am right in saying this) Would flashing a new radio network unlock the device?
Kindly feel free to correct me and guide me on the above steps please. thanks.

I just now saw your post and if your still interested in getting help with gaining root, S off and flashing custom roms I'd be happy to walk you through it as I have done all 3 on the same device. As for the CID changing I did research on that but it's a niche reason as to why you would actually use it but I did a lot of research on it and would pass on what I've learned there as well. Just let me know.
Is there a way to get s-off for free?
S-off

Can you help me out how to S-OFF my phone, I'm Stuck at that part.
I paid the $25 for the Sunshine app and it gave me true S off. That's the only way to get it. There are write protection mod scripts that fool the system partition to allow root apps like Link2SD to run at boot up but I never messed with that particular hack as it's still not true S off.

depends if u need your MSL
to root you 1st need to unlock the bootloader via htcdev.com
after unlocking bootloader, you need to flash TWRP from download mode
boot into TWRP to flash either Magisk (my preference) or SuperSU

HTC Bolt SIM-Unlock
I followed the steps from the instructions and was able to SIM-Unlock the phone.
Also, performed UICC unlock in Software Updates after I paid off the phone.
I tested it with a friend's T-Mobile SIM and worked flawlessly.
Also tested with another friend's AT&T SIM and again worked flawlessly.
I have since switched to Verizon and found out that it will not work on Verizon, so I decided to sell it.
Sold it on eBay and now the guy who purchased it says he is getting the following error :
"GSM/UMTS Mode not supported in the U.S. Only foreign SIM card usable in device. Your device will switch to CDMA mode now."
When I google this error, everything I find is for older HTC devices, and these posts are back from 2011.
Has anyone come across this, or do you think this guy is trying to pull a fast one on me?
Again, I know for a fact it is unlocked and will work on AT&T but he says it is still SIM-Locked, and says the MSL code I gave him is incorrect.
Pretty sure a phone cannot re-lock itself.. am I wrong?
