I haven't been able to find a thread comparing the H and G builds, so I figured I'd start one. I'm well aware that both are discussed in depth in the enormous Magic thread, but I felt that a comparison of the two builds deserves its own discussion.
Basically, the questions are, which build do you like better? Have you tried both? If so, what features does Build X have that Build Y lacks? Etc, etc. Including the build number (i.e., 5.0.1H) would also be helpful.
Personally, I've just switched from JF1.42 to 5.0.1H, and I think it's a great change. I'll be giving the Google build a test soon, and I'll report back with my relative impressions.
Just to be clear: I am not asking what the difference is between H and G. Instead, I'm asking what features one has over the other.
im wondering about this also, screenshot comparisons would be great! im runing 5.0G, and its flawless! I am considering the HTC build tho, i just would liek to see what it looks like...

Agreed, if people could post screenshots up, all the better.
screenshots for 5.0.1H can be found here:

another member will be taking shots of 5.0G for comparssion
good job on this thread.
Neither firmware is intended for the G1 (just to clear up that confusion).
Both are meant for Magic/Sapphire.
One is based on Google's build (CRA79), and one is based on HTC's build.
I have the H build on my phone. My girl has the G build on hers. My phone is very stable, battery life is best it has been.
The only major difference I see is the looks obviously. And the camera. The HTC one is better but i dont take many pics so not a dealbreaker. Im gonna flash the G one on my phone and give it a walk through then decide wich one im gonna keep. My girl wants me to put H back on her phone cause she like the keyboad better lol.
i think the biggest difference is just the keyboards
imho i think the htc keyboard is waaay better
it takes some getting used to but it has alot bigger keys and its alot easier to use and the word prediction i believe is better also
Am I correct in assuming that the Google version has no Chinese characters scattered throughout the system (widgets, dialer, etc.)? I haven't heard anyone complain about G build language issues.
the HTC build has a nice media player widget, thats about all i like on it.... Wish there was an english weather widget.

there is no chinese anywhere scattered throughout the g build.
One thing I notice is that the 5.0.1h has activesync/exchange but the 5.0G does not have activesync/exchange, however, I was never even able to get the activesync/exchange working in the 5.0.1H version.
Yeah, I will just wait for the official Dream update. I guess I can appreciate that someone is doing all the work for porting it over, but why? To get it a couple weeks earlier and less stable?
Not worth it IMHO
For me, the 5.0.1H build is going to be out of the door as it has a weird conflict with my UK phone. The browser is throwing weird crash errors on the VK. Haykuro has already looked into this and can't find anything wrong (the error is not even being logged down). Any other UK users having the same problem with the VK crashing in the browser?
Really, the exchange support is handy for me; but not crucial. I'd rather have a rock stable build and 5.0G will provide this. As much as I love the VK on the HTC build, the Google one is fine enough and having the physical keyboard doesnt make this a killer decision for me.

But just think, his phone is stable, he doesn't sit up all hours waiting for a new release, and he wife/girlfriend probably doesn't think he is obsessed.
I really dont notice the difference in the VK's much either since I am so used to opening up the g1 to use the hardware keyboard. The dialer app in 5.0.1H is really annoying too. I don't like the asian characters and I hate how you have to press the menu button instead of being able to use tabs like in 5.0G
I'm using the 5.0g version, and its very stable so far. Camera and video work great. I'm very tempted by the h version because it is far more pretty then the G build and has so nice features, but from what I understand it is missing some key apps like GMail and Maps that I use daily.

Personally, I love the dialer. It opens with the SEND key (instead of that useless call log), which is a really nice feature, and negates the need for a Dialer tab. Just hit the green key from any screen on the phone, and the dialer pops up. I feel that it is way more intuitive (it auto-completes like most standard phones); the only drawback is the Chinese characters.
I do agree that, personally, I'm indifferent to the VKs. While I definitely appreciate the feature, I don't use it enough to care which one I stick with.
Overall, having just tried out the G build, I find the H build to be a nicer change. The G build is simply to similar to the previous Android builds to keep me interested; the H build really changes it up a bit. One thing I don't like about the H build, however, is the ugly white call screen; though I didn't like the dark one RC33 had, this white one is equally as unattractive, in my opinion.
I posted this in the Uber-thread earlier, but here it is again...
I put together a spreadsheet to help me figure out this very question today and posted it on Android Community in case some other folks might find it useful. JohnnyLicious has already contributed his screenshots of 5.0.1H, but if someone wants to throw up some 5.0G screenshots I'll add those as well.

Dude, I totally know what you mean. And not only the keyboard, but also that finger-flick thing. You know, the one where you kind of touch the screen with an up or down motion and it kind of flows... When is one of the WM developers going to get off their ass and make that possible on my Hermes! Sheesh!

You can check Resco Keyboard 5.11 pro version. It has all the features with look and feel of iphone keyboard. Pretty finger friendly too.
I think some of the posts here are unfair.
Yes you can search but you're wasting your time. I've been looking for a better keyboard for wm for years.
PocketCMKeyboard has an old version which sort of works, sometimes a bit slow. It has some skins which are close to the iPhone style but again you'll need to search for them, find the right version, copy the right files to the right places, cross fingers and it will be okay. I used one for a while, some drawbacks but looked pretty good. Depending on the version of PocketCMKeyboard, it would bomb out with a time thing that meant you needed to download the new version straightaway. There's a new version but the skins are different and the old skins don't work with the new PocketCMKeyboard and you need to search for those as well. There isn't, I think, an iPhone skin for the new version.
The stock HTC keyboard qwerty thing is pretty good and is on a lot of the 6.1 roms. It works, looks pretty ugly but it works. There's a new 2.0 version you can search for and someone clever here is working on a qvga version. It looks a lot like the iPhone keyboard. You can serach for that as well, look out for version 2.0 rather than 1.5. It's not ready yet but we are hopeful.
Search on here sucks a lot of the time. If you think finding what you want is incredibly frustrating it's because it is. Shouting SEARCH all the time doesn't really help anyone, especially if they can't find something that matches their question.
Unfortunately, while I like my HTC Touch and enjoy tinkering with it, programming for it and trying out all sorts of registry hacks and tweaks to make it better, the market is going to run away with products like the iPhone which don't require all that extra work.
HTC + xdadevelopers + time = acceptable
Let's keep it polite.
I did one a while ago for PCM v14
You may want to try the link labeled iClone in my signature. I used much of the actual iPhone graphics and layout.

Are you serious or did you konk your head falling out of bed today!?!?!? I have had more trouble find a piss room in an air port than the almost 12 differenent keyboards on this site and skins to match iphone!!
This thread is was started by a person that is just another useless waste of space.
Hi,

PocketCM Keyboard
Haha, i personally think it is the hardware problem, the capacitive touchscreen will do all the trick that iphone will do. The software is partially at fault too as someone had said in this thread.
I've been using HTC Sense since getting my Evo on launch day and have been loving it. However, I keep hearing about AOSP and how the much-awaited Cyanogen ROM that is in development is using it.
What are some of the key differences between both?!
someone should post a picture comparison of Sense vs AOSP so threads like these will stop being created.

It will happen no matter what..Its not like AOSP is something new. There are countless pics of AOSP on these forums already. Google pic search for AOSP and you will also find many.
You have to use a AOSP ROM to really know how much better then sense it really is. Sure you'll loose some fancy dancy widgets but I have found good replacements for all the ones I used.

It is a very different feel. I like clean/simple things (I like Apples computers and gadgets, for example) and to me AOSP has a more clean simple feel. I think Sense has a great look to it, but some of the bubbliness is tacky to me. The lock screen and rosie are nice, but most of the apps (calendar, RSS, etc.) and widgets are gaudy to me. I particularly dislike the bubble at the bottom to switch tabs thing, just ugly to me.
I also think there are some big UI mistakes in Sense. Editing a contact is confusing for instance.
However I do like the black notification bar, and I like Bugless Beast's launcher with a black google search bar.
In the end it is a matter of taste. One of the reasons I moved from my iPhone to an Android phone was to have more options in regards to this kind of stuff.

I'd rather post a quick question to people who are dealing with this frequently, than trawl the web, sift through junk and install something which has lots of bugs.
Cheer up, its not all bad.
Thanks for the link.
you'll have to forgive XDA, recently it has attracted many young people that get bullied at home and school, this is a place they can come and anonymously display their e-toughness. Just ignore them.
btw, i dont think there is a sense rom that has everything working like your stock version. i hope im wrong but i was interested in rooting to use sense, in the development section i couldnt find any that didnt have disclaimers about things that arent working, so i havent gotten to try it out yet. But again, maybe im wrong, and i hope i am.
Without a criteria of what he is looking for other than good and stable it's hard to give a good answer. It's not about e-toughness, it's about searching, putting together an informative post, and reading the forum rules.
'cymru' is 100% correct. All it took was a search and reading comments about what does and does not work, then nandroid backup and try the rom and see if it passes the "good and stable" test.

Well there are some roms that have ported sense camera, and apps.
I do believe my "The Official" rom has them. It didn't come stock with the sense camera, but I had it installed (easy to do from spare parts, plus I have 720p recording).
The best you can do is look for a rom with those things ported over.

EDIT: THANKS JRBOURQUE ^
Hi guys, if the battle for whos the cleverist is now over, heres some feed back for the advice given.
I've installed, Evils q&d sensefroyo. Been running it for a few days, its cool. A little buggy, a few force closes, high battery use, no bluetooth, but very usable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730290
Again thanks for the input, hope this helps anyone else who was looking for similar info.
Cheers.
I tried kingxclikz and Paul's r23 roms, I must say the first one is very buggy and there are no ways to use it even for 24h(though I think it needs an eclair radio),Paul's rom is way more stable but the lack of Metamorph themes, trackball mods and BT are too important.
He promised to release a new version soon so all we can do is wait and see!
Ughh. No BT on any sense ROM then?
Is anybody even working on bluetooth for Desire roms? I don't think anybody actually is. There are a few people I think might be capable like Paul but he's busy with other things now by the looks of it
I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes anyway. Everyone is jumping on to the MIUI bandwagon, and yes in my opinion it does have a few cool features, but not enough to win me over. Am I the only one on XDA that kind of dislikes this rom? I've tried to like it but I just can't. I like roms that tend to be more stock anyway, I think modded froyo such as enom's rom and cyanogenmod etc. have all of the features and beauty that I need. I see a lot of people saying think iOS and Android together! If I wanted iOS I would own an iPhone and not a N1.
I understand it is all preference and whatnot, but I can't be the only one who hates the MIUI interface. FM Radio cool! Interface not cool! I know I can install other launchers but to me that kind of defeats the whole purpose of running this rom.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore, I just wanted to give it a chance.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for this rom?
Sorry for the rant
It's okay. I dont hate or like it
Haven't tried it. It looks nice and well done but the iOS styling doesn't draw me in
Think I'm gonna try it, but I'm with you flapjaxx

Probably.. I just don't see what the big deal is about this rom. I posted in the general forum so I am allowed to express an opinion/vent a little about a rom thats getting a lot of attention and I personally don't see what all the hype is about.
By the way you did read and reply to my thread.
Yea you're correct in stating that installing other launchers defeats the purpose. I liked it for about a week but went back cyan...now i'm on micromods hybrid...for me the sense roms got me hyped up. If the Mui wasnt iphone'd up then it would actually be really sweet but that whole iphone thing just ruins the experience and awww of having an android device
I agree with you OP. I dont like it at all. Now the fact they made a new UI is cool, but like OP said, if I wanted iOS, I would have bought an iPhone
haha fair enough.
I am not too big on the iphone icons either. However, I do like the lock screen, speed, and the battery life.
Also it isnt as obvious as in cyan, but it does have .flac support and will stop playing music when you disconnect. However it will not play upon reconnecting.

The lock screen is slick. It does seem speedy, I can't confirm battery life only because I wasn't able to use it long enough to really wear on a battery. I do appreciate that there are so many choices with custom roms and the dev team that created this rom has obviously worked hard and it shows. That is the beauty of android, so many choices. It is a very pretty rom no doubt, but I just prefer a more stock type interface.
The MIUI ROM looks nice, but I also prefer a stock, simple look. Im happy to see them pushing the envelope though.
the big hype is because MIUI is a complete overhaul, different than what we are used to. Sometimes a change once in awhile is good, and MIUI is a great change I jump from cyan to MIUI. FM radio, lockscreen, and the UI is amazing, I do prefer different style icons but that's about it
It's a very, very optimized ROM. Battery life, speed, the super-neat toggles in the notification tray. You can just install another launcher and still benefit from all of the above plus the great lock screen, FM radio, and excellent phone/SMS/contact apps.
I Agree, with launcher it's really a nice rom !!
I like the resent part who include a task killer.

I like the UI, but i miss a few features from CM.
CM with the MIUI launcher would be great.

I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes anyway. Everyone is jumping on to the MIUI bandwagon, and yes in my opinion it does have a few cool features, but not enough to win me over. Am I the only one on XDA that kind of hates this rom?
Am I the only one who hates this rom?

And who told you that you have to use it and are not allowed to use anything else???
If you don't like it use something different. Whats the problem?
I don't like pink colored t-shirts so i don't wear them. I don't blame anybody else that wears pink t-shirts. I don't tell anyone that I hate them. I just don't wear them.
Same thing for you, if you don't like MIUI Rom don't use it. Try it, if you don't like it restore nandroid backup and forget about it...
And shut up, keep it for yourself that you don't like it.

Umm...dont use it then?
Just want to say I tried the port for my Inc, but went back to cm6.
Though I don't feel as if its my flavor of ROM, I do want to say it is very innovative, and probably the first (at least on ROMs for the Inc) of its kind to really truly redesign the interface.
So while I don't use it, I would definitely like to see more transformations of this kind.

Well i guess you have a wrong concept of the MIUI rom. It is not because of the launcher ppl like the rom. But because of the tweaks. till now there are no roms to my knowledge where you could change the lockscreen within the android os. ( i am not talking of 3rd party apps like widget locker....., here it's different. it's the native one being modified. ) we havent been able to change native phone and contact.apk, we were just applying themes. but the MIUI is different. Even when you go to settings in the menu, you'll observe how things get snappier and all bouncy. Not to mention the little menu's in the lockscreen ( now being seen in the sense HD), answer&reject mods when receiving calls... and the FM radio which were unknown and still being documented in the xda community. Basically everything has been modifies here, even the mms.apk.
so i guess it is wrong to make such an assumption based only on the launcher which ressembles the iphone. I have been using the MIUI with launcher pro and I had amazing battery life.
If you do not like a rom , just don't use it. Why dont u make another thread saying that rodriguezstyle is too greenish or micromod's roms are too glassy ( sorry chefs , lol . it was just to make my point). or maybe somebody else should start another thread saying i hate stock looking roms! Of course you can come up with all these talks that xda is a community forum, everybody has the right to bla bla bla , democracy.... and you do have the right but it is all about MANNERS and RESPECT here! You do not critise someone's work ( which you are getting for free btw) just because of ur taste!!
Hi again everyone!
This may sound like a stupid question, but I've been reading up on a lot of apps that disables the HTC Sense features (ie. Launcher Pro, Cyanogen ROM, etc).
I'm asking myself this question: What are the features of HTC Sense? What will we be missing if it's disabled? Smooth scrolling? Animations?
I read up on the HTC website but of course it's more marketing than informative *duh!*
Thanks for being patient with me

You'll get smoother animations and transitions between apps, but you can't use any HTC Sense widgets.
Thanks for the response zervic and Product F(RED)!
I just read the link that you provided. In summary, HTC Sense is just a smooth-scrolling, animated user-interface comprising of several applications & widgets for the Android, such as:
# Friend Stream
# Camera
# Gallery (Pictures)
# Calculator
# Calendar
# Desk Clock
# Contacts
# Music (player and library)
# Weather
etc.
That's it! Wonder what the big deal is…
Will anyone convince me I do not want to lose Sense at all?

The two main things that work in Sense but not in CM6/AOSP are Flash Lite and FM Radio. Flash Lite is HTC's proprietary "lite" version of Flash that will allow you to view some of the more basic types of Flash on webpages (but not things like streaming videos or music). It's kind of pointless though because that basically means the only thing you can view are Flash ads... lol. Personally I haven't missed it.
Anyway, there's no need to "convince" you. You should just do a Nandroid backup then install CM6. If you don't like it, just load the backup and you're right back where you started like nothing happened.

I have been meaning to ask this question but I don't want to open another thread so I will ask here.
I am leaning towards making the jump to CM6, but I keep seeing that it has no Flash Lite or Flash 10.
Can you elaborate on that a little more? Does that affect my web browser?
I had the Tilt and that didn't have Flash and web browsing sucked. Will I have to deal with that again? Thanks.

On Sense you can temporary disable Flash Lite through the browser settings, so if you're curious to see what it'd be like, just disable Flash Lite and see if it causes any problems for the sites you usually visit. Personally I don't think you'll miss it.
AOSP > Sense
Freedom > conformity
Sense is just HTCs way of making android their own. Using a rom without sense means you can make android your own instead of the way HTC thinks you want it. Samsung and Motorola both have their own versions as well (I'm sure others do too, but those are the only two I've others I've used. I personality prefer the extra customization you can achieve with an ASOP based rom. If that's not important then theres no reason not to stick with the stock sense ui.

The Aria is incapable of flash 10.
Hmm… Now I'm just speechless. I don't know what to say. Guess the best way is to flash different ROMs and try them out myself and see which ones I like best.
Thanks for participating people!

Not exactly. Adobe has designed Flash for Android to rely on an instruction set that is not supported by the Aria's processor. It would still be possible for Adobe to create another version of Flash that WOULD work on Aria in the future (for the sake of expanding Flash support to more devices), although to date they haven't really given any indication that they would do that. I just wanted to point out that there is some hope still, although I wouldn't call myself optimistic.

Yes, but the Aria's processor isn't fast enough for smooth playback anyways.
I had a stock Aria with Sense for several months and loved every bit of it...then I flashed Cyongenmod and I love it even more. Somethings arent as "pretty" as with sense but you get the added benefit of making it look the way you want. The level of customization is incredible and I dont miss Sense at all.
For those that miss the Sense weather/clock on the home screen, Just Google "Fancy Widget"...its exactly the same thing but without the cool weather animation thing that you get after unlocking from the lock screen. I think it was pulled from the market, but you can still find it. I have the apk if you cant.
Just do what others have said. Nandroid back up your current ROM, flash a new one and see how you like it for a few weeks. If you dont, go back to your old ROM. Its super easy.

It's fancy widget 1.30. Don't say you're going to offer out because that's part piracy. Pointing them in the right direction isn't breaking any rules though.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I tested out Sense without flash and the only site I really go to (a NBA forum) had problems because they usually post youtube videos of dunks or other plays embedded in the threads and they wouldn't show up. That sucks.
But I have seen so many really amazing customizations in the Home Screens thread that I will probably go to CM6. One more final on Monday and then I can get to messing around with my phone.
I just love what people have done with Clockr. And the sense weather animations are cool so I will miss those.
I guess you're right "Product F(RED)". It took me awhile to find it and I would like to provide it to anyone who is looking, but I see what you're saying and maybe its not a good idea. On another note, I did a little bit of research and the guys who made the one that was pulled have made a new one (still called Fancy Widget) that is on the market. It looks pretty nice and has a lot of features, but does not have the "flip clock" design that I like so much.
