I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes anyway. Everyone is jumping on to the MIUI bandwagon, and yes in my opinion it does have a few cool features, but not enough to win me over. Am I the only one on XDA that kind of dislikes this rom? I've tried to like it but I just can't. I like roms that tend to be more stock anyway, I think modded froyo such as enom's rom and cyanogenmod etc. have all of the features and beauty that I need. I see a lot of people saying think iOS and Android together! If I wanted iOS I would own an iPhone and not a N1.
I understand it is all preference and whatnot, but I can't be the only one who hates the MIUI interface. FM Radio cool! Interface not cool! I know I can install other launchers but to me that kind of defeats the whole purpose of running this rom.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore, I just wanted to give it a chance.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for this rom?

It's okay. I dont hate or like it

Probably.. I just don't see what the big deal is about this rom. I posted in the general forum so I am allowed to express an opinion/vent a little about a rom thats getting a lot of attention and I personally don't see what all the hype is about.
By the way you did read and reply to my thread.
Yea you're correct in stating that installing other launchers defeats the purpose. I liked it for about a week but went back cyan...now i'm on micromods hybrid...for me the sense roms got me hyped up. If the Mui wasnt iphone'd up then it would actually be really sweet but that whole iphone thing just ruins the experience and awww of having an android device
I agree with you OP. I dont like it at all. Now the fact they made a new UI is cool, but like OP said, if I wanted iOS, I would have bought an iPhone
haha fair enough.
I am not too big on the iphone icons either. However, I do like the lock screen, speed, and the battery life.
Also it isnt as obvious as in cyan, but it does have .flac support and will stop playing music when you disconnect. However it will not play upon reconnecting.

The lock screen is slick. It does seem speedy, I can't confirm battery life only because I wasn't able to use it long enough to really wear on a battery. I do appreciate that there are so many choices with custom roms and the dev team that created this rom has obviously worked hard and it shows. That is the beauty of android, so many choices. It is a very pretty rom no doubt, but I just prefer a more stock type interface.
The MIUI ROM looks nice, but I also prefer a stock, simple look. Im happy to see them pushing the envelope though.
the big hype is because MIUI is a complete overhaul, different than what we are used to. Sometimes a change once in awhile is good, and MIUI is a great change I jump from cyan to MIUI. FM radio, lockscreen, and the UI is amazing, I do prefer different style icons but that's about it
It's a very, very optimized ROM. Battery life, speed, the super-neat toggles in the notification tray. You can just install another launcher and still benefit from all of the above plus the great lock screen, FM radio, and excellent phone/SMS/contact apps.
I Agree, with launcher it's really a nice rom !!
I like the resent part who include a task killer.

CM with the MIUI launcher would be great.

Umm...dont use it then?
Just want to say I tried the port for my Inc, but went back to cm6.
Though I don't feel as if its my flavor of ROM, I do want to say it is very innovative, and probably the first (at least on ROMs for the Inc) of its kind to really truly redesign the interface.
So while I don't use it, I would definitely like to see more transformations of this kind.

Well i guess you have a wrong concept of the MIUI rom. It is not because of the launcher ppl like the rom. But because of the tweaks. till now there are no roms to my knowledge where you could change the lockscreen within the android os. ( i am not talking of 3rd party apps like widget locker....., here it's different. it's the native one being modified. ) we havent been able to change native phone and contact.apk, we were just applying themes. but the MIUI is different. Even when you go to settings in the menu, you'll observe how things get snappier and all bouncy. Not to mention the little menu's in the lockscreen ( now being seen in the sense HD), answer&reject mods when receiving calls... and the FM radio which were unknown and still being documented in the xda community. Basically everything has been modifies here, even the mms.apk.
so i guess it is wrong to make such an assumption based only on the launcher which ressembles the iphone. I have been using the MIUI with launcher pro and I had amazing battery life.
If you do not like a rom , just don't use it. Why dont u make another thread saying that rodriguezstyle is too greenish or micromod's roms are too glassy ( sorry chefs , lol . it was just to make my point). or maybe somebody else should start another thread saying i hate stock looking roms! Of course you can come up with all these talks that xda is a community forum, everybody has the right to bla bla bla , democracy.... and you do have the right but it is all about MANNERS and RESPECT here! You do not critise someone's work ( which you are getting for free btw) just because of ur taste!!

I'd rather post a quick question to people who are dealing with this frequently, than trawl the web, sift through junk and install something which has lots of bugs.
Cheer up, its not all bad.
Thanks for the link.
you'll have to forgive XDA, recently it has attracted many young people that get bullied at home and school, this is a place they can come and anonymously display their e-toughness. Just ignore them.
btw, i dont think there is a sense rom that has everything working like your stock version. i hope im wrong but i was interested in rooting to use sense, in the development section i couldnt find any that didnt have disclaimers about things that arent working, so i havent gotten to try it out yet. But again, maybe im wrong, and i hope i am.
Without a criteria of what he is looking for other than good and stable it's hard to give a good answer. It's not about e-toughness, it's about searching, putting together an informative post, and reading the forum rules.
'cymru' is 100% correct. All it took was a search and reading comments about what does and does not work, then nandroid backup and try the rom and see if it passes the "good and stable" test.

Well there are some roms that have ported sense camera, and apps.
I do believe my "The Official" rom has them. It didn't come stock with the sense camera, but I had it installed (easy to do from spare parts, plus I have 720p recording).
The best you can do is look for a rom with those things ported over.

Hi guys, if the battle for whos the cleverist is now over, heres some feed back for the advice given.
I've installed, Evils q&d sensefroyo. Been running it for a few days, its cool. A little buggy, a few force closes, high battery use, no bluetooth, but very usable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730290
Again thanks for the input, hope this helps anyone else who was looking for similar info.
Cheers.
I tried kingxclikz and Paul's r23 roms, I must say the first one is very buggy and there are no ways to use it even for 24h(though I think it needs an eclair radio),Paul's rom is way more stable but the lack of Metamorph themes, trackball mods and BT are too important.
He promised to release a new version soon so all we can do is wait and see!
Ughh. No BT on any sense ROM then?
Is anybody even working on bluetooth for Desire roms? I don't think anybody actually is. There are a few people I think might be capable like Paul but he's busy with other things now by the looks of it
Is it just me or does it seem like everyone and their mother are posting Roms in the Evo development subforum?
I'm not going to name names or anything, but there seem to be a few teams that work very hard at distinguishing themselves as great releases only to get overtaken by people launching derivatives that are not much more than wallpaper changes of the very same roms?
Many of us can tell the distinction between the two, but I worry about new folks coming in who have no idea. I'm not going to spread FUD, but installing roms from an untrustworthy source is a great way for real problems to be introduced into the security model of the Android platform.
Does anyone else see this as a concern? Are there any solutions we as a group can come up with? Is this really not a big deal?
Yes you are correct
OMG I changed the color of the call [email protected]!!!!! NEW ROM!!!!!
Instead of theme change.
Either go cyanogen (uber premium) or stay rooted stock.
No need for the other bs. They don't do anything.
Now the kernels, I like, keep them going though. But the roms need to stop.
I think people are just making them in a sad attempt to gain free donations for their "efforts" or lack thereof.

so let me get this straight. you're automatically dismissing OMJ's work, Baked Snack, Fresh, Damage Control, etc. just to name a few, simply because they are not cyanogen? better at ease son.
secondly, you can't simply lock down the forum for the "legendary" cooks. what happens if a noobie comes in with a simply stellar rom that gives us 12 years of battery life and the ability to teleport but because he's not Cyanogen, he can't release? that seems a little asinine.
i think people need to be responsible for their own phones. research, do a little leg work, talk with some forum members, make an informed decision and go with it.

Nice way of twisting what I said. BTW...
Nice upoad speed dude 44mb
I'm still a relative newb to Android, but I can see how it would be easy to get overloaded with all the ROMs out there. I've bounced back and forth between Fresh, CM6, and rooted stock for a while and I finally got sick of having to set up my phone over and over again (yes, I know about Titanium, but it's not good for certain types of things). Anyway, I finally said f*** it and flashed CM6 again and have left it there. None of them are perfect, but CM6 works the best for me.

Less twisting then what you think. It's not CM or stay stock. I personally ran CM nightlies and CM6, both times I left them because even with all the fine work he's done there are very large and blatant things I don't think are great about it.
Does that mean it's low end, no, but there are lots of Roms every bit as highend and polished as CM.
Now on the main OP, I agree that we are seeing a flood, but also that there is nothing to do about it in an open community which is pushing people to tweak and express and share. It is what it is, and if they aren't calling out the people who put in the actual time into said Rom and giving them all the praise for the actual work then shame on them.

Neif, you crack me up whenever I see you pushing your grid. I've been dircting people to the wiki to check it out, but good luck trying to stay on top of all of the new releases. More power to you.
And to bring the thread back on topic - there do seem to be a lot of roms floating around that don't really seem to bring anything new to the table.
People are just posting what works for them. I am glad there are so many ROMs. If you think this is bad, I guess you never had a G1.
This really isnt something I'd be complaining about. Check out SDX forums (Moment support). Theres like one rom still receiving updates. The Hero forum is also losing support. Im more than happy to see people pushing a rom they cooked. It means the kitchens out there are actually getting used for the reason they were made available. Imo thats what open source is all about. If you dont trust it, dont flash it. Its that simple.

I also love that the kitchens are being used - I'm dying to try one myself. I don't think its a trust issue though, I think its that some of these roms don't bring anything unique to the table, other than some theming and the removal of some apps.

dsixda's kitchen has pretty much everything you need. I installed Ubuntu in Virtual Machine and have started messing around, but unless you know what to and not to change, there isnt alot you can do to make the rom unique. But its worth doing if you're interested in learning about rom development.

I've been looking at cooking my own rom but the thing is I would not only give credit where credit is due but also call it what it is.
I may come up with the perfect setup of base rom, kernal, apps, theme and just want to share with people who maybe like me are looking for that specific setup.
Easier to flash a rom with all that baked in then flashing everything individually. As long as someone credits correctly and doesn't try and say they did it all themselves why does it matter if it's documented properly.
Doesn't make it a worthless rom just makes it a colaboration of great work.

Its not a question of worth, simply a question of signal to noise.
I've run DC, Cal's, Netarchy's, Baked, Fresh, CM, Nightlies, and probably ecen a few others...I still think some sort of metric is required.
I'm gonna try thinking of something.
First I think we should be happy the evo has a strong community. We may even lose some with the galaxy s phones coming out.
Next a agree many aren't much of a difference, but for those that don't have time to tweak stuff in the kitchen before installing, it is nice to find exactly what you want.
Finally I'm sorry to sound like an elitist, but this is a hackers forum. There shouldn't be such an expectation of things always being safe and working.

I do agree there are a lot out there and it can be tough for people to tell what is what. I don't think it's a bad thing though, device support is good, it means that hopefully things will be running for a long time to come.
Why is it not mandatory for people to post screen shots of their ROM, when submitting a new thread for people to try it?
I personally don't wanna waste time and hassle flashing a ROM to find out it's ugly and not well made.
You can spend hours, days, weeks building a ROM.. but can't take 3 seconds or less to take a screen shot?
Why should it be made mandatory? We all know what Sense ROMs look like. We all know what AOSP ROMs look like, we all know what Miui ROMs look like. If you cannot put two and two together to get four maybe you shouldn't be flashing ROMs. Screen Shots do very little to illustrate how well a ROM preforms. It just shows what it looks like. You don't look in the paper for a car and think "i want that car" without test driving it first. And you do not rely on other people test driving the car for you then reporting back to you.
I personally have no problems with them not offering screen shots for their ROMs. I'd rather download it and install it and test it for myself. After all it's easy for us to say what we like on your phone.
Because if the ROM is not themed (which will be stated) they all basically look the same. We all know what AOSP looks like, and we all know what Sense looks like. Why would you judge the ROM off of someone else's wallpaper?

I understand where you are coming from. but though out time i'm sure any Android user has seen all of the different UI's. They might not know what they are named, but they know what they are, and have seen them. That's kinda the point i'm getting at. I'm not trying to sound like a jackwagon but someone doesn't need to hold their respective hands 24 / 7.
Self accountability and self responsibility i guess is a thing of the past.

But you miss the point again. Most of those new roms now are all CM7 spin off and they honestly offer nothing new other than the Theme. This is not debate about UI as we know what it looks like but this is to shed light on the folks who puts a theme and declare it a rom. SS is needed because they have diff theme if it was plain vanilla they wouldn't exist now would it? Now I am not bashing any dev's but come on do we really want to go in that path.

I guess we are side stepping each others argument. We'd make good politicians . SS would provide a good insight to how the ROM is theme'd, and how it looks... And i'll give you that. But it will not do any justification on how well the ROM runs. How smooth it is or anything. My point still stands. Screens shots will not tell you how well a ROM is built it only tells you how it looks.
I agree with the OP, ss should be mandatory if you've done any form of custom graphical changes. While it wont depict the performance, it sure will give an idea on the appearance. Whether its food, cars, women & even roms, appearance is a deal breaker for me

After all it's easy for us to say what we like on your phone.

so i post 5 links to 5 roms
all you know is 3 are 2.2.1 and 2 are 2.3
2 are similar in looks
3 are totally different.
you're gonna flash every single one of them til you find one that suits you?

This thread reminds me of trying to get my wife to pick out an adw theme...she was so fixated on what the wallpaper looked like in the sceen shots that it made her dislike some of the themes. There aren't many super themed out ROMs in our dev section, and the ones that are do have screen shots. Like I said, for the most part you are just going to get a picture of the wallpaper someone is using.
Why is Cyanogen the most widely discussed/used rom rather than MIUI? I just tried MIUI for the first time yesterday and im pretty impressed in about every way. It comes with an integrated way to customize every part of the rom, with lots of options. It comes with a firewall and a task killer, even if you probably dont need them. You can change the effect when moving between home screens. Customize the toggles in the status bar. It comes with a built in blacklist. Even the settings are more extensive. I mean the music app even find the lyrics to the song your listening to!
Is it just because it looks like the iphone, so you disregard it even though it has more features integrated more seamlessly?
Why?
CyanogenMod is supported on more devices thanks to a large dev team, faster (Android version) update pace & its a generally clean ROM with great codec support & other little tweaks that make a big difference. It has been around longer.
MIUI is a unique rom made by a great team of devs in China. It offers a great set of feature & a new experience. It requires a little more outside help (as far as U.S. users go) to get it going on other devices, not to mention the translation changes & hardware support. Hasn't been around as long.
Its not really a matter of it reminds me of ___, better than, as good or it does __ ___ __. That Cyanogen gets more viral commentary .vs any ROM.
MIUI is closed source. CyanogenMod is open source. Thats reason enough for a lot more discussion in here.
Besides... MIUI incorporated some good stuff from iPhone, but also some really crap things , like removing the app drawer. IMO
Also, where the hell is 4G? They've had it "in the works" for months and nothing. When they actually make it a fully-functioning EVO rom that makes use of the hardware I paid for, then I'll switch back to MIUI.

I echo these same sentiments as the same reason why I haven't fully adopted MIUI. Beautiful launcher and Core apps is really how I think about it (and IMHO a little too iOS).
Cyanogen is Awesome, but MIUI is a dream. To me aleast, don't have no 4g in San Diego so who cares. I put all my app's in a folder and named it "app drawer" as for closed source, oh well. I'm not a developer by a long shot, so I don't care. It's all about preference and mine is MIUI. I'm hooked like a bad drug.

Use Alt Drawer for your app drawer. I use it with ADW EX, even though there's already an app drawer. I'm running MIUI, but missed ADW so I switched back. It's really good and fits well with MIUI. Find an app drawer icon that you like and put it into your theme mtz with the package name for Alt Drawer & put it on your dock. Or do what I do and use an app like Button Shortcut to open it when you long-press the search button.
If you don't know how to change the icon, pm me and I'll do it for you. It's actually a bit faster & easier to do it than it is to explain it.

I've tried MIUI twice, but I just can't stand it. Too much like iOS and I dislike the home screens.
I prefer my android to look like android, especially aosp.

That has been answered 10,000 times. There will NEVER be 4G for MIUI unless the Chinese get 4G in Shanghai or they release the source code. If a tlittle bit of a faster data connection is enough to keep you away from the most innovative ROM out there, then buh bye.... Trust me, no one using MIUI will miss you
Also, other than no App drawer, MIUI is nothing like Iphone. I'm sick of that comparison, too.
Considering a large number of users use LPP, ADW EX and GO, not many are missing an app drawer, anyhow.
^Agree with Hipkat, MIUI is not to be compared to IOS. Only thing tht is happening to it is the 4G and that is subject to the chinese opening their source. As far as everything else, I had MIUI and is eye candy. One of the best made for androids phones.

Folders FTW!
The question shouldn't be "which is better" but rather which fits you best. Both roms are excellent but one might keep you away from other due to the way it operates. Cm has tons of extras including adw launcher, 4G, etc which makes it the way it is.
While miui has the "iphone" look (yes it looks like iPhone so get it over it) and has that awesome customization market that let's you change almost anything on the phone.
I personally don't use either due to the fact that both have some kinks to work out but that doesn't stop me from trying both out every now and then

Yah! Folders, FTW!!
Hey Nick where did u get that background
HTC EVO 4G
App drawer is a matter of preference. I'd rather organize my apps in different home screens or folders rather than be lumped into one massive list and hunt thru them. I have no idea why the app drawer is considered a great feature.
And if you really want it, there's an app on XDA which will do it.
In everything else, MIUI is leagues beyond other rom's. Contacts, dialer, sms, backup, theming, notifications, monitoring - all of these are best in class, and to even get close you have to get a bunch of extra apps in other rom's.
It may be inspired by iOS but it has more features than iOS or Android, is updated weekly, and runs faster.
Cyanogenmod never really did it for me. Granted I haven't tried it on the Evo 4G yet (used to have a Hero CDMA). All the extra stuff they added just never really grabbed me and the performance just never seemed as good as pure AOSP.
I really love MIUI. It's super fast and being able to customize everything really is nice. Plus since I'm an update junkie I love that there's new stuff every week.
I'm in Reno, NV, so there's no 4G so I don't really care about that. As for the app drawer, I don't see what the big deal is. Once I have the apps I use on my home screens I hardly every go into the app drawer.
I don't think one is better than another it just really comes down to preference.
I love them both and bounce between both. They both are great rom's based off a great os, so really do you have to pick? Just enjoy the freedom of being able to have a choice and not stuck with what your given... just my two cents...

4G is my main reason that I haven't tried MIUI.
And in my area, I do get 4G and its significantly faster. There are lots of sprint users where I live, but most of them are on 3G it seems, so bandwidth on 4G is much more available. Now, its not that much faster than 3G if you are in a good unsaturated 3G area, but I am not. The 3G around here is very saturated.
So for me, 4G isn't a little bit faster, its way faster, so don't be quick to judge. If it weren't for lack 4G, I would definitely try it. I don't mind the iPhone inspiration that some others have issues with and I have heard very good things about MIUI, but lack of 4G really is a dealbreaker for me.
You have an HTC Evo Shift? You rooted it and put a custom OS on it?
Awesome.
First timer right her who wants to ask your preference, the only thing I have to have is the ability to tunnel my internet to project a free hotspot. That is available in CM7, so far I am leaning towards a nightly build... But essentially since I have not done this before, I don't know the best, I'm sure no one knows the "best"...BUT I would very much like to know your favorite considering that is my main concern

I really like Sense Roms, especially sense 3.0. I was rocking a stock, rooted rom, but got tired of HTC dragging their feet releasing the source code for the Shift. I flashed CM 7.1 stable, with Scary Ghoul 3 kernel, running at 1.5 gHz. But, if HTC already had source code for the gingerbread release, I'd still be on a sense rom.
Created a whole thread about this. Here you go.

If you like Sense then it's gotta be Supreme Sense. Real nice ROM with lots of bells and whistles and a very nice camera app.
Me personally, I prefer CM7. I want raw performance and the maximum amount of customizability and CM7 offers all that more than any other ROM.
@Vico
The thread you specified was...
[INFO] Cyanogenmod 7 optimal settings for Evo Shift 4G on SPRINT (Updated 10-7-11)
Which is not what I'm looking for, I happened to say I was looking into CM7, but would be open to another OperatingSystem all together. CM7 does good work, but honestly they are the only ones I know about. So I would be narrowminded to assume the only one I know about would be the best choice. Since alot of people on this forum have done alot to their phones their input on a recommended OS will be followed.
Well I'm sure you know it depends on your usage, and preferences. I'm a Sense kind of guy. If your looking for a sort of stock Rom with a lot of extras that's quick, than MikShifted G v1.75 is a great choice. Stable, Reliable, and Fast. If your looking for something a little more over the top that's still stable, reliable, and fast. Than Supreme Sense is it, eye candy plus.

Don't discount MIUI.. there are a lot of people into it for one reason or another. Myself being one of them. Someone new to flashing roms might find it's exactly what they're looking for.
