Problems accessing my companies e-mail server over a VPN connection - Networking

I need to access my companies e-mail server using a VPN connection. I have listed the name of the mail server in the list of expections for which the VPN connection should be used. However when I try to send and receive mails the VPN connection is not automatically established and naturally it fails to connect to the mail server. Also if I manually establish the VPN connection it will automatically disconnect (to try and use the regular 3G Internet connection) as soon as I try to send and receive mails. What am I doing wrong here? How can I get this to work?
I have an HTC Touch HD if that is of any help knowing. I hope some of the wizards here can help me with this problem. Please ask questions if you need further information in order to suggest a solution.

email issue on MDA Vario

Hi, I hope you guys can help me.
I've had my MDA vario for about a week now, and ever since I got it, I cannot for the life in me get it to connect to my IMAP server using the built-in email client.
I done lots of testing stuff, which basically comes down to this:
networking/wifi is connected and working. I got an IP address from my DHCP server
I can ping the server's IP and receive information back
I can connect to the IMAP server using Qmail
but When I use the exact same connection details in the built in client, it doesn't work saying "unable to connect to the incoming mail server. Verify that your login information is correct, then try again to send and receive mail."
The other strange thing is, If I try connect to the mail server from outside my network, e.g. from my work's internet connection, entering my external IP, it works fine.
I've also checked out the server logs, and it doesn't seem to register a connection AT ALL.
so in short, the problem only occurs when connecting to my mail server from my local network, using the built in client.
Any ideas? is there a log file(s) I can check for any details of why it's not working?

WLAN->Internet: ActiveSync with Exchange?

Hi all,
I'm having problems getting ActiveSync (on the phone) to be able to use the WLAN connection to connect to the internet and sync with my exchange server. It takes forever otherwise, even when I use the 3G connection. I understand that it's not possible to sync with a desktop over WLAN but I was hoping there'd be a way to get ActiveSync to treat the WLAN connection like the cellular data connection and just get on the internet.

I have exchange in my office. If you want to use the WLAN (wifi), the exchange server address is usually difference than if you were using 3G (internet). Unfortunately, the 8525 only let use key in one server address, so when you are in the office...you have to turn off wifi....unles you want to retype your the address.
I key in the server address that i use to access outlook web...so if i'm not in the office, i can still get email. It is easier to turn off wifi when i am in the office.

Unusual E-mail Behaviour

Well this one has got me well and truly stumped!!! Hopefully one of you guys can help out with this....
I have set up my e-mail, standard pop3 account... I can access and send mails through my ISP mail via GPRS, 3G, HSPDA no problem... I can even send and recieve mails when using WiFi at work no problem, however I get the standard windows mobile 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device...' timeout error ONLY when trying to conect to mail through my home WiFi network or when internet sharing through activesync... I have no problem accessing the web at home using WiFi or Internet Sharing just e-mail... and just to make things even more unclear any other PC or laptop has no problem at all with my e-mail when connected to my home WiFi network!!!
Any ideas, hints, tips or suggestions greatly appreciated

POP3 email issues. WiFi weirdness.

First post here, I've had my G2 (Hero) for nearly a week and think it's amazing, but I have encountered a problem.
My Hotmail sends and receives just fine whether I am connected by WiFi or 3G, but my pop3 email will send and receive if I'm on WiFi but it will only
receive if I'm out and about on 3G. It's a bloody nuisance and I can't
think of any reason that would be the case.
Has anyone else found this?

It seems like the SMTP server that you're using is not accessible using the 3G network. ISPs commonly block access to their SMTP servers from other networks. E.g., if my regular ISP is ISPA (to which I connect using WiFi) and my mobile operator is ISPB (to which I connect using 3G), I cannot access ISPA's SMTP server when I am connected through ISPB and vice versa.
The most likely cause of your problem is that your POP provider's SMTP-server doesn't accept message relaying from the addresses your phone is assigned when connecting over the phone network. Many providers permit unauthenticated relaying from addresses in their own network. In that case, make sure that the outgoing server (SMTP) for your POP-account is configured with authentication (username/password). Encryption (TLS or SSL) is also recommended. If that isn't enough, contact your POP-provider and ask if they at least can enable global access to authenticated relaying over SSL (port 465) or authenticated SMTP relaying in general.
Ah, I wonder if this is what the girl in the T-Mobile shop was going on about when she asked if I wanted to pay another £5 a month for email? Perhaps they have, as you have suggested nerfed the email capability over 3G. That would be a proper nuisance, I've not had a network do that to me before

That's not the issue. Any half decent server administrator makes sure that his/her servers do not relay messages on behalf of the entire planet. However, when done properly the provider will have a system that allows relaying for authenticated clients, and will provide all the information their customers need to set up their clients accordingly.
If your POP mail provider, presumably your ISP, cannot supply authenticated SMTP access (check this first!), you have a few realistic options (I'm sure there are more!)
Buy access to an authenticated SMTP server (e.g. http://www.authsmtp.com/mobile/index.html) which will allow you to send email via SMTP regardless of how you are connected.
Use an intermediate email service like Gmail to collect your POP3 email and send replies via Gmail.
Your cellular provider will have their own SMTP gateway - you can change your email settings to use their SMTP gateway when connected via cellular data, but I guess you will have to do this manually every time you want to switch between cellular and WiFi.
Note that this isn't a fault with Hero or Android - it's your mail provider!

My ISP is Blueyonder (well, Virgin now). I just think it's strange that they should be rejecting the smtp connection as I have set up these two pop3 accounts on every mobile I've had for the last 10 years and they've worked perfectly (a Siemens, a few Sony-Ericssons and a Nokia and that's on Virgin Mobile, Orange and 3 networks). It would be a shame if I was limited to using my Hotmail for everything from now on.
I'll drop Virgin customer services a line and see if there is some way they can do this magical authentication thing of which you speak.

GPRS (MS Direct Push) Issues

When I'm connected to Wifi and GPRS, I receive my e-mails instantly through Direct Push. When I leave home (it disconnects from Wife) and the mobile device stays connected only on GPRS, I do not receive my e-mails instantly. I have to do a manual Sync so send/receive e-mails.
When I'm on GPRS only and i check the server status, I see the following message:
Exchange Server
Result:
The server could not be reached. This can be caused by temporary network conditions.

I think You need to have the proxy turned off before adding the exchange server, then everything worked fine.
and if you don't have a choice -as the post arrived- already you will need to delete the current exchange server, make sure the proxy is off, then re-add the exchange server......

just use CWSProxyManagerGroup to administer , you can disable or restore it
