Any X1 owners experience screen defects? - XPERIA X1 General

I currently have a UK Touch Pro, and about a month in, it developed a rather nasty "oil patch" problem:

I determined the problem is that the touch-resistive layer was subject to overpressure (my fault I suppose, but I actually do try to take good care of it). This oil patch issue isn't isolated, either. A few other Diamond users have been having the same problem. And just for clarification, it is not condensation, and it is not because of the screen protector.
At first it was a minor issue, but since then stylus input has been getting worse, with taps jumping all over the place unless I tap very firmly. I had tried to get a warranty repair when the oil patch first appeared, but HTC pretty much ignored me, and it was too late for me to get a return/replacement through my retailer.
Without many options, I've been deciding to cut my losses (if anyone on eBay would want it) and move to the X1, as long as it doesn't suffer from similar screen defects.
So have any X1 owners had any problems with their screens? (edit: replies describing any problems would be much appreciated )

There's a thread on this forum about slight "milkyness" or light bleed coming from the upper corners of the screen, it seems a few people are affected. Granted, it's not a functional issue as such (the input isn't affected at all) more of a cosmetic issue.
Mine has it, but only on one corner, I'm *considering* asking vodafone to provide me with a new one, as I can't imagine it will get any better, and I've only had the phone a few weeks.
A bonus for the experia (though some poeple don't like this) is that the screen has a bezel, which protects it a fair bit better than the screen on a touch pro.

LOL, is this what you guys were referring to in terms of light leakage?
no I don't have this on my X1i

Well no, the picture in the first post of this thread isn't about light leakage, but about the really obvious oil patch staring you right in the face
But I did post a picture of the light leakage issue over in that thread.

I thought that was the definitiion of light leakage as well, but apparently folks are claiming otherwise. That's why I thought it's referring to the oil patch. my bad.

Most "oily" patches on a phone are broken LCD, which aren't covered under the warranty. Normally caused by bumping the screen on the corner of table (or similar) whilst in your pocket.

Well my LCD isn't broken, only the touch-resistive layer is damaged (still functional for now, but who knows how much longer). And I have yet to drop or bump my TPro on anything at all, leaving me to believe HTC's design is simply too fragile (my old hx4700 took far more abuse and never had any problems).
So I'm wondering if it's just an isolated design flaw on the Diamond/Raphael (perhaps because of the new flush-mounted design), or if the X1 touch-sensitive layer is also equally hyper-sensitive to heavy pressure.

it's pretty easy just to get a new LCD for your mobile, you can find dismantling guides al over the web; my former HTC polaris had the same problem and I just ordered a new LCD from ebay.
eventually i repaired the screen thanks to the heroes that buy their products just for dismantling them.
it only cost me 60 euros! and i was happy as hell xD
but you can also just buy a new phone and sell your old one for the greater good.

It wasn't so fun for me. I recently broke the resistive tough interface of a P990 (not the actual screen) and ordered an LCD with the camera (the old one had a smudge). 110€ for both but the bad omen came when customs needed another 140€ to let the item pass from China!!!
So in the end I paid 250€ to repair it and guess what, the resistive touch panel became very unresponsive after 5 days and after a failed attempt to fix it (via cleaning the internals) the screen LEDs stopped working. Finally I broke the resistive touch panel out of my nerves (because the telephone was useless) and I had just wasted 250€ which I could have given from the start for an X1.
Reading all those faulty threads about X1 I begin to be quite scared by the fact that my X1 could suffer from these dreaded screen faults (when it arrives). I just hope that this is another case of unfortunate cases being heard more than the good ones?

Which threads? This one has a Diamond user asking if the same will happen with an X1.

Well the light leakage problems, the battery backplate, the cracks in the case etc. But yeah only one is about the screen maybe I exaggerated.

That's what I'm worried about.
What ever happened to the gold old days of electronics that would work for at least 1-2 years before you had to start worrying about hardware problems? I've barely had my Raphael for 3 months, and if problems come up this easily when I take good care of it, I can't imagine how it can possibly survive prolonged wear-and-tear.

New design on case. Cracks no more!!!

Don't know if this is old news but I just have to speak out my joy. Got my phone back after replacing my case the second time. And finally they have redesigned the case. Hopfully there will be no more cracks on this spot anymore

what awful crack!...
Strange that the "new" redesigned case has date of manufacture -> 08w39 and the "old" cracked one is -> 08w44... Could it be that they knew it all the time that these cracks will be happening, but instead of mass recall the "cracky" cases they sold all of that saying "What will be will be...."

Thats because it is a sticker on the phone. Not the case.
somehow i dont think its the redesign issue, something else thats unknown must be the problem, my xperia date is 09W08 with the same design as the second pic, still no cracks...
Uh... where's the difference in the design? Can't really tell.
Had a crack in the same place, and now also have the "new" redesign case replacement.

No sharp corner in the new design. The first thing you learn to not have when you study design. Everyone learns that except the tossers at SE

yeah bro SE has the worst designs...
Does somebody have the old design on pic without the crack so it will be easier to see?
Edit: Fixed it. Nobody can miss the difference now.
if you look closely you can see the difference. the corner where the crack starts is different from the one without the crack. the corner is filleted (ie. rounded) where as the corner with the crack is pointed.
i was gonna wait before i send my x1 to get the housing replaced. i didn't see why people would send the phone in for repairs when SE haven't even come up with a redesigned housing yet and just end up getting cracks all over again. but now, it seems like a good time to do so. btw, i've counted a total of 8 cracks on my x1.

Good choice. This was my second time I had it on service for a cracked case and if you put it all togehter (had it on service three times) I have had my phone on service for 63 days. That's 2 months on a phone that isn't a year old yet.
time to repair
I have the problem where my phone won't charge unless it's turned off.
But now I also have the cracked case problem.... So I think it is time to repair.
I really love the phone... but at that price, I expect better quality. I just hope they don't keep it too long.

It is two pictures of two old xperia phones. One pic that i found on this forum and one that i shoot of mine, with the new case, in almost the same angel so it would be easy to see the difference.
It amazes me that you cant see the rounded corner in the middle of the lower picture

You are a lucky man. Please tell my how you do it. Is your phone always lying on a pillow on your desk with a bluetooth headset connected to it? Have you not even once dropped it 2 decimeters onto a soft rug?

I have dropped mine more than 10 times. 3 of them hard falls. Not a crack or a scratch on it. I use it all the time, in my pocket, on the desk, in my hand, etc.

Dust and screen

Hi all,
I have just noticed that I have one single particicle of dust under the glass of the LCD.
I am wondering if someone has experienced anything like that yet or I am the proud owner of the only HD2 in the world with a dust particicle under the screen.
I thought they were assembled in a clean room... in fact the dust particicle it's exactly on the center right of the display... I thought it was a bad pixel but luckily it is not.
Now I am wondering how to remove that. Gonna try some elctrostatic method...
Me to ... only noticed it today when putting on an HTC screen protector. It is to the bottom left under 'phone' on the left softbutton.
The question is ... are they not sealed properly ... or is this something that was trapped during the manufacturing process and subsequently moved. If it is the former ... we have a big problem.
I wonder how HTC approach this under their 2 year warranty ?
If it is sealed ... I assume there is no practical way to get the dust out.
I've had the device since the 11th.
Paul.

I don't know... let's wait and see. Mine is really near the center of the screen. It seems really strange that it is coming from the outside.
I have the device since the 17th.
Where did you get the screen protector from? and also does that have any effect on using touch screen on the phone?
Bump.
No one else yet report dust problems?
My single particicle is still there and I cannot move it anyway.
No other particicle yet although I am getting nervous and I am starting to see dust particicles everywhere.
I was quite surprised by your report, and keep checking my device for dust. Not found so far (using two weeks, also loose in pocket). Major dust problems would really disappoint me, such a high end product shouldn't have that...
Checking the device for defective pixels/dust under the glass is one of the very first tests I do when I'll eventually get mine.
Could you not just return it to where you bought it?
Hi,
not a dust particle for me, but like a "bubble" in the glass...
I took a picture of it :
its on the left hand side (most of the "dots" here are dust on the screen), there are 3 of them
on the picture it looks like 3 white dots but in reality it's a bubble in or under the screen...
I remember having the same problem you have with my SPV C500 and orange changed it.

Hi, I have a very similar "bubble" under my HD2 screen. It's right in the bottom right! Got my phone on the 29th. Should I take it back to the shop or contact HTC?
It begins...the usual HTC problems rear their ugly heads!
I have had a dust problem with every single HTC phone I've had all the way back to the original SPV! Damn them!
well... i contacted orange & they will change it (a brand new one)
this pb didn't really disturbed me, but then i read on a forum that a user broke his screen with a very small shock and i thought "this bubble might weaken my screen"
I had a quick chat with HTC regarding this, and the hotliner told me that "this shouldn't be on a brand new phone, it s a hardware issue, please contact your distributor asap & they will change it"
Well you are right... but a single dust particicle means that mine is unique, while yours is common.
By the way... I bought mine from expansys europe giving it back and having it substituted means months.
I'm afraid as previously mentioned, I too have one dust particle ... you are not unique at all
Let us stand tall together and proudly go where no HD2 has gone before ....
HTC are working on a hotfix for this bug, be patient <<joke
Strange ... when I called I was told they had determined it was a hardware problem and they had invested in nanobot technology to seek and consume alien dust organisms.
I have a speck of dust too!
bottom left of the screen.
only had it for 1 day!!!!!

I took mine back to the shop only to be told it was caused by me! I was not happy! I kicked off big time. You can clearly see the bubble is under the screen!!!! How the hell could I have done that!
Anyway they eventually agreed to replace the handset but they (o2 uk) have none in stock in any store! When asked when they would receive stock I was told that they don't know!!!! How can they not know? I was so mad. I made then make a note on my paperwork that I came back for a replacement just incase they get funny after the 14 day returns policy.
Im upset as the handset has so many problems -
* Reply to sms takes forever.
* Camera takes pink pictures
* Bubble under the screen (Which is common from what I can tell)
* and now I can see a .5 mm black line at the right hand side of the screen from top to bottom!
I think HTC rushed this phone to market.
To be fair HTC said they would repair the unit but I don't want them taking it apart. It's a brand new phone and I want a replacement.
Rant over
If you had it for only one day, you can ask for a replacement as your not happy with the pinkness of the camera for example.

Tmobile G2 (Vision) Touch Screen dead spots

Been having some odd issues with the G2 lately.
Got it on launch - waited the mos for root and then rooted and have been flashing ROMs ever since. Had vision unity on the phone forever and suddenly started experiencing touch issues.
I'm in Dallas so it's been 100+ degrees out forever - on a few days I took the phone out of my pocket, and the screen wouldn't respond at all, as it was the exact same temperature as my body heat - so why would it? Cooled it off and all was good.
However - lately the phone seems like it has dead-spots in certain areas - or parts where I am unable to touch. I'm not getting any type of random touches while attempting touch or erratic behavior - it really just seems like dead spots.
I looked for other posts etc. and when looking outside of XDA, all that I am seeing is replacement touch glass for $25! - holly shi1t that's cheap!
So cheap that either there must me an issue .... or ... maybe I'm missing something.
I've flashed various ROMs since and am seeing similar issues in all ROMs and am still trying to convince myself of exactly what the issue may be.
Is anyone else experiencing these types of touch issues?
My screen isn't scratched in anyway so I'm really not getting it...
ALSO:
Is there a specific program that I can use to discover or locate the specific dead spots on the screen? A search on market yields nothing.
Thanks in advance guys - everyone rocks here! Epic community.
CLIFFS:
My G2 touch screen if messing up - is there a util to verify a hardware issue or something to do other than flashing a new rom?
Everyone at XDA is a f(_)cking pimp!
EDIT:
Changed Title from Intermittent dead spots to just: dead spots
Will upload tests w/ Paint Programs in a min ...
It is possible for heat to have damaged the screen, but unlikely. Fact is that it is a capacitive touchscreen, that means that it senses your finger by the completion of an electric CIRCUIT from the body of the phone, through your hand, the tip of your finger, into the conductive grid embedded in the glass.
I find it much more likely that the extreme weather is simply interfering with the conductivity of your hand. First thing to try is cleaning the screen with RUBBING ALCOHOL to eliminate all the oils that may be interfering. Then try soaking your hand in a saline solution for an hour, drying it off with a towel, and while your hand is still somewhat damp, try it then. If this corrects the issue you've been experiencing, the issue is your hand and the weather, not the sensor.
Note that the screen does NOT detect temperature.
OK ... so I was able to verify a huge deadspot in the center of the screen with Kids Paint ... and also the square coloring page on Zebra Paint.
It seems like the best steps to very were:
-DL Kids Paint from the Market
-Start drawing in curved circular motions - a straight up and down motion over the spot would actually join all of the lines as if there was no dead spot.
It appears that if you cross over this "dead zone" quickly enough that the swipe completes on the other side and the shortest path between the two points is assumed. When this become an issue in this case is when attempting to make selections within this zone - as it's not possible.
Shame - my phone was in perfect condition. If it didn't have insurance I would probably order this: HTC G2 Vistion Touch Screen Digitizer

I'm getting the exact same issue as you. really sad cause tmobile doesn't support this phone anymore and I'm afraid that if I got a replacement thrugh there insurence its either gonna be a refurbished phone or a non qwerty non CM7able phone. I really love this phone and having dead zone right in the middle sucks.
So far I noticed anyone with this problem always has it in the same middle part as we do.
I don't belive its from heat, I think its just bad digitizers.
I'm having the same issue, sigh, i'm up for an upgrade, but nothing really out on t-mobile i'd want atm. I changed roms to see if it fixed anything. Maybe i'll try a replacement screen at some point and see what happens being as they are 25$.
I am experiencing some dead spots once in a while while I type letters, particularly "s" and "i" and "k" areas. It is quite frustrating...
Same with me. Im really thinking about calling tmobile and getting a replacement.

So I called tmo yesterday, explained the problem and that I used touch test to determine where the issue was, that I tested both horizontal and verticle nd had same problem. They asked what ver of android I was using, told them mmy phone was battery dead and had no charger with me, they asked about any dmg, the white sticker, etc..but said the screen was a defect, and that I'm still under warranty..they sending a rreplacement Tuesday..charged me 5$ ..hopefully I won't get a bad spring phone like the one I have. But they try to see if yur rooted without asking..heh but it was fairly painless..they also said that this prroblem wasn't a "known issue"..I guess they need X number of people to complain about it before its an issue..fortunately unrooting was pretty painless.

IMO major product design flaw

I think Samsung blew it on the design of the galaxy tab 10.1
There is a serious screen and stability problem with the tablet.
Whenever I pull it out of my bag I have the Newton rings.
I know that a lot of people believe it is weather related or humidity related.
My experience is that this is because the glass is too close to the digitizer.
What makes it worse it the fact that the case flexes so much due to the weak plastic on the back. Even the weight of the battery can cause these rings to appear by holding it upside down.
I don't believe that a screen replacement can fix this unless they reinforce or separate the distance between the two surfaces.
Has anyone with a repaired unit tested it by holding it upside down to see if they still get the rings? Mine go away but some don't. It is always reproducible though.
My Tab has none of the issues you're describing. Why not replace it under warranty.
also no newton rings here!
and trust me, i know such discussions (display related flaws) far enough from my SGS2:
there is/was a problem with yellow tinting especially on the left side of the display, most people have it to some extent, some not. the ones with the flaw almost never believed the other guys that their displays were close to perfect...
No replacement under warranty.
You will receive refurb replacement. Cannot request new unit. Mine sent back diagnosed with bad mother board. No motherboard available in US, will not be for awhile. A long while was what i was told by repair facility. I do believe they are cannibalising units to refurbish.
Yet another complaint thread for a well-discussed problem. Mod, please delete.

I was a little nervous about some of the flaws I read before I purchased my tab. I seem to have none of the problems except the laggy text input on the browser. I inspected my tabfirst thing when i opened the box and discovered no visual problems on the screen.
The Newton rings can appear later on... there are people who got them after 5 weeks.
My belief is that they are frequent on the first batch... My screen is extremely rigid and darker than the ones shown in videos. You can hardly see the difference between the bezel area and the screen:

The picture was taken at an angle against my black monitor screen. In the lower right corner you see the color difference between the bezel and actual screen, taken against a white wall reflection. I press it fairly hard in several areas and did not have any issues.
I guess it was the trade to have an unlocked device.
I'd rather have a locked bootloader and a perfect screen...
apple stores would have swapped it before you can finish your sentence.
they replaced mine for minor lightbleed ...got a perfect one.

Don't know if it's a rare coincidence or all units are all having some form of defects.
Getting my 4th one soon and I'm already worried.
I reckon that T mobile got there hands on a beta batch that have defects
I seriously doubt it is dust, as the AMOLED technology doesn't allow dust to penetrate between the screen and the display as they are one. So it could be dead pixels.
It is possible that during manufacturing some dust penetrated under the digitizer before it got glued to the screen. Return it until you get a perfect unit.

Mine has a small black speck on the left in-between the aluminum frame and the glass. It's only visible if I'm looking at the screen straight on or tilt it. It kind of drives me crazy when I remember it's there, I don't know if I should send it back.
Well 4th time's the charm right? That actually looks like a dead pixel... if the 4th one screws up, what will be your options? Keep asking for one until they give you one that is finally good?

Doubt it. When placing the screen, as far as I know, they do it in dust-free environment so it isn't really possible any particles to go between the screen and the display.
Look at all the pictures - it doesn't look like dust, it looks like dead pixels. And having dead pixels is normal on every phone - yeah, could be annoying but that's about it. I think Samsung has a policy that they will return your phone if and only if you have a certain amount of dead pixels (at least it was like that during the time of the S4). Hence if you have a single dead pixel chances are that they are gonna tell you to f**k off
It's definitely not a dead pixel. I looked at the phone at a wide angle and is definitely a spec of black dust.

Why is it not possible to have dust on AMOLED screen?

Because everything in the display + the outer glass is glued together in a dust-free environment.

But that dust-free environment is not 100% dust-proof. Just like everything in life.
I've got my 4th one today. The screen is clear of any particles. Although. Samsung yet has to answer for the pink hue issue on most of their displays on smartphone.

As opposed to how everyone else looks at the screen? On a 90 degree angle?
Sorry not poking fun at you.. Yes you should take it back.
Shoddy QA needs to be dealt with at a corporate level and the only way to do that is if everyone sends their devices back when they have crap like that happening!

How the heck is a environment considered 100% dust-proof anyway? Having twenty thousand ionizers around the entrances to the room?
Dust exists everywhere, presumably they get the screens from the factory that makes them.. There is guaranteed to be dust in that factory.. They then open up the screen packaging to get access to them.. Sure enough that dust free room is now containing dust.
It's like a mysophobic nightmare.

Good to hear! Well sort of.
Mine has a spec right in the middle of the screen, definitely not a dead pixel, I'm probably going to call and get a replacement
Guys, Just received my Samsung Galaxy s6 black 32gb sim free today from Amazon UK.
Noticed a large spec of dust under screen too getting a replacement unit tomorrow.
The quality control on this phone is just as bad as Apple iPhone 6 hope I don't get banned on Amazon for returning too many phone's due to Samsung shoddy quality control team.
I have it too

just got my phone from the service the other day for a screen replacement and the new screen has a spec of dust in it. You can see it that is under the glass. Do they change the screen under warranty if you have a spec of dust ?!?!
Ive opened a new thread for this if someone is interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/changed-screen-warranty-dust-screen-t3328890

Why would you so proudly announce that you made a duplicate thread? Not cool bro.
long version of the problem
Just got my phone after screen replacement and I have noticed a spec of dust under the glass and the samsung logo is not straight. The spacing around the the logo is to the left. That is not all, you can see the glue under the glass there are waves of discoloration from the glue used. I have told the official service the problem of the new screen they just put on my phone and they told me the screen is send from samsung as it is. WE can not change it again ! WHAT ?! They wanna tell me that if they change the screen once because of manufacturing fault (the original screen was not responding to touch and it was yellow-ish) they cant change it again ?! Please someone explain the laws of warranty
You can see everything on the images except the waves that are very difficult to photograph.
The good old dyson helped me in the past sucking out dust on my iphone

The person mentioning about impossible presence of dust in a so called "dust-free" environment (they are actually called clean rooms) is either an idiot or uninformed. Contamination is not impossible. And many factories across the globe have rather questionable clean rooms, you should start doing some research.
