I have had this happen twice now.
My tytn (v0628) has locked up. I took it out of my case and pressed the power button and got nothing. The lights are blinking as usual (bluetooth and phone). I tried to call it and it did not wake or ring, but on the phone I was calling on it was ringing, and I got that speaker interference so I know the call was reaching my TYTN, but it didn't wake up. So I had to soft reset it. The first time this happened it was on the charger (wall) and not in its case, it happened overnight. Woke up to it not turning on.
Anyone else having this issue?

Yup ... I've seen it perhaps 6 or 7 times in the month I've had it.
The actual stability issues I had were resolved - i.e. hanging soft resets etc - by rebuilding. In the main it is very stable.
You also get irritating hangs when the device is left to rung and hang up.
Paul.
Yep. Same issue here. The phone is working normally; you just couldn't get it out of powersave mode by pressing the on/off button. I sent mine back for replacement due to two bad keys and an inoperative flash, but I was going to investigate it further. Like:
How about pressing something that would normally wake it up like the camera button perhaps?
... sometimes its rough out here on the (b)leading edge....
This happened twice to me too, both times after being charging for 4-5 hours during the night it doesn't wake up the next morning, it doesn't matter which key I press, only solution was to soft-reset with stylus.

Exactly the same issue here, I could hear the interfernce on my hi-fi speakers when I called from landline phone to my cell number.

I didn't have it on the wall charger, but using the USB computer cable, so it doesn't seem a problem related to charger.
I had this happen to me a bunch of times too but it turns out that it was spb software that was causing this issue for me. I had SPB pocket plus and Weather installed, and running on my today screen and it happened quite frequently. I decided to do a hard reset and keep the software minimal to what i "needed" so I kept is simple. haven't had this problem since then. I believer it has to do with the today screen which is either a bug in spb software of a bug in the firmware.
Good Luck!

I don't have any 3rd party software from SPB installed, but can be probably some other soft....
It was locking up for me too and I went and removed SBSH PocketWeather to test it out since it was the last thing I installed. I remove it from teh Today screen and have not had a lock up yet. I am also running SPB Diary with no problems. I am thinking it could possibly be due to these programs that have to connect to GPRS/UDMA every so often to update its data like PocketWeather since it happens with different programs. Maybe it locks up while charging and trying to make a connection. Just my thoughts.
AJH..
hmmm... I also had spb pocket plus and spb weather installed. When I get my next TyTN I'll have to remove those if the problem re-occurs. however I also had one instance of POFs charge related issue. Maybe its also spb backup related since I fire one of those off every day at 3AM.
I don't have any SPB software on mine. However I was using magic button with the battery meter on top. I have disabled the battery meter. That was 3 days ago. It has not happened since but that does not mean it was the problem. BTW I decided to allow the device to stay on (screen back light off but awake) while charging to prevent this from happening overnight.
I know SPB has a battery meter and I also know that this device reports the battery level in strange ways. Like it only reports 10% increments. Also when you first wake it up the battery is @ 100% then goes to the proper level.
Try this if you have voice command;
Have your device off the charger with some battery missing, 90% or lower. Wake up your phone and quickly activate voice command and say "what is my battery level" It will report something strange like "the battery level is unavailable" or I got this one "the battery level is critical" but it was @ 50% and when i asked again it reported 50% just fine. So I think this may be related to battery polling programs.
I am guessing at this and I have not had long enough time to test it but I thought I would toss it out there for everyone to try.

I have the SAME EXACTLY problem with my magician, this is a common fault as I can see :? The fact is, most users says that the PDA wouldn't wake up after a night: then the problem is the low temperature.. test this putting the TyTN in a fridge while it's cold, then try to wake it up the problem is there...
MocciJ
i had the same problem with my trion using imate rom......but it didnt happen after a long charge......i just havent turned it on for about 5-7 hours, and then when i did turn it on it wont respond.....so i had to do a soft reset........from my experience i think it was my wisbar advance so i uninstalled it and went back to using wisbar lite......i never had this problem before when i was running wisbar lite originally....when i installed wisbar advance and had it on my device for a couple of days and thats when the problem started to happen......after uninstalling wisbar advance and putting back the wisbar lite the problem didnt come back.....so i think it has something to do with what is running on our today screen.....maybe programs that takes up a lot of resources etc might be the culprit......
i have same problems with prophet. after every charging a have to soft-reset. no additional software is installed and never been. just clenan WM5. so this is not a problem with 3rd party software.
Has anyone noticed that the magnet in the HTC leather case is too strong for the TyTN?
I think that I FINALLY figured out why I was having so many "strange" things happen (i.e. Pull out the phone from the HTC case and it comes out in landscape mode). To test- Open the case and move the magnetic flap around the phone while it's on (with screen lit up) and see if it causes a problem with the display.
I need to find a durable NON-Magnetic carry case. Any know of one available for the TyTN?

Anyway, I recommend to all who's having this problem to send the TyTN to repairs.. It's an hardware fault

Well you can send out your TyTN if you want. I can say that since I removed the battery bar feture in magic button I have not had this problem. I also let my device stay on (screen backlight off, but device still on) over night.

Yes. I removed Opera and all went back to normal.
We have many topics on "locking up", freezing, storage card problems, windows media player problem, and so on
Please when you have this kind of problem check if you are using appz writing/reading on the storage card
The worst period in my life with TyTN was when I set IE cache and E-mail cache on storage card... (It is a FAT 16 card...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=61879 is about overnight freezing....
Sergiopi,
Can you tell us in simple terms what to check to be sure that our programs are not making use of storage card. For instance, I am using pocketbreeze and sbsh pocketweather and both were installed on storage card. Should I simply remove them from the Today screen? Should I reinstall them on main memory?
Thanks, apap
1) Have you sat up IE or Mail SW to store cache or attachment on storage card?
2) Have appz with auto update or log file installed on storage card?
3) Check active processes and events scheduled
This is a simple check list, you can also leave without storage card your TyTN and check if any error message appear after 2-3 ours
To stop applications use any process explore to recognize and stop the process (safer un-checking from today screen first)
I experienced this problem regularly, especially when left on charger overnight as others have reported . I also chgd my ROM from HTC to IMATE -- experienced lockups in both so it's not the ROM.
Saw a suggested "fix" another thread (referenced above) -- Settings/Connections/PC to USB - uncheck box for Advanced Network Functionality --- that seems to have corrected it! I was experiencing the lockip several times a day, but haven't had a lockup since making this chamge. Amd my software install is very similar to others in this thread - spbpktplus, sbsh pocket weather and pocket breeze, wisbar adv 2.
Not sure how this setting is involved, or even whzt it does, but glad the lockips seem to have endec.
After searching for ages for a solution I am now about to throw in the towel.
I would so love this phone if I could get my problems sorted out
My phone randomly...
1. Does not "wake up" when a call or text message comes through. When I do switch on, only then do I get missed call notification and text messages.
2. Phone does not "wake up" when the power button is pressed (about 3 times a day) and I have to soft reset. (LED's still blink to indicate the phone is active)
My ROM: 1.35.222
Radio: 1.18.00
I have uninstalled anything which could have been a problem and only have Ewallet installed.... I even went as far as removing two magnets from the pouch.
Pleeeeeeeeese someone, have the magic solution for me.
But have you ensured that you have done these things?

I did two things on the same day that have stopped this problem completely....
1. upgraded to the beta cingular ROM (2.06? - AKU 3.3)
2. installed any apps that will be running frequently to the phone memory (Voice Command, Phone Alarm etc)
I just bought nice standalone LCD Weather-forecasting station with Alarm built-in
I can't afford to not get awaken on time.

Thanks for that but I had already tried all the solutions.
However... I think I may have found the problem.
Although I had removed all programmes, the one thing I did since my last post was to remove a dialer skin I had installed (my last resort). This seems to have made the problem go away (two days with no freezing so far)
Any comments on how on earth a skin could effect my TyTn?
I agree with you, I uninstalled a dialer skin (JPLDialer_Au24_Black from PaulyA) because it was conflicting alot with Magic Button.
The other thing I did was removed an item from my Today Items - Newsbreak (an RSS feed which needs an internet connection). I put it in my menu instead, and this has decreased problems as well.
Things seem to have improved slightly, and ActiveSync isn't opening as spontaneously like it used to.
Mine didn't turn on twice (it wasn't alarm, I manually tried to turn on) and it froze. I then rezlized it happens if you have something sensitive installed on storage, because when device wakes up the storage doesn't wakeup as quickly as the device.
So everything that remains in memory most of the time (today plugins and other stuff) I install on the device, not storage. No freezes since then, fingers crossed.

Oh, oh. Spoke too soon. After behaving for a while it's back to its old tricks.
Phone does not wake up to recieve calls or text messages. Of course I only find out hours later when I switch it on to use it and get 5 text messages and 5 missed call notifications
I'm in between surgery so thought I'd post a quick question where the answer is puzzling me.
Basically, I'm in wonder if this has happened to any other soul?
Picked up my HD2 when I came out of Theatre and it simply would not switch on.
Thinking it may be the battery that had run down I connected it to a power source to charge and noticed the Orange charge indicator did not light up.
Next I took out the battery and reinserted, then pushed the power button......
Still nothing.
Thinking was it a problematic battery (although it still should have switched on when connected to a power source) I exchanged the battery for the spare I take around with me.
Still nothing.
Finally, I reinserted the first battery and once again pressed the power button.
This time it fired up and loaded without any issue.
I checked the battery level ~ that indicated 56% still remaining.
So I am in puzzlement as to what may have caused it's temporary death.
Has any other had a similar experience?

It would seem that to some (myself included) there is a fix that does indeed cure the problem and that is by using the software application MemMaid.
Others have tried SKTools but MemMaid seems to operate much better at terminating the freezes.
Unfortunately MemMaid is not free and seeing as HTC will not budge from this being a 'users personal settings' that is causing the freeze our only course of action at the moment is by using MemMaid.
However, please do note..... Not everyone has benefited from using MemMaid; why that is the case could be down to some individuality ~ a different setting, installed software, routine notification, etc. etc.
In other words first try the free trial version of MemMaid and if it seems to cure the the problem then do consider investing in it.... besides all this it is a great piece of software.
You can get hold of MemMaid here.
Word of Warning.....
Ensure you set up MemMaid correctly. I spent ages with member wacky banana throwing many personal messages between the two of us like fervid lovers until finally wacky came up with a setting we could use.
Below is the settings to apply to MemMaid:-
In your programs section you should see 2 icons, one called Memmaid Quick Clean and the other is Memmaid.
Click on the Memmaid icon and a window opens.
At the top left corner it should say Quick Cleaner but this is not relevant for now.
Put a tick in the the following options (the list is scrollable):
- compact ram
- windows temp files
- temp files
- ie cache files
- ie history files
- opera cache
- dead shortcuts
- duplicate notifications
- dangling notifications
- invalid notifications
- rebuild notification queue
- recycle bin
- google maps cache
Press the CLEAN button and wait for the tool to do its job then press the close button.
Next, on the bottom right of your screen, click the Tools option. From the drop-down menu choose CLEAN SCHEDULE.
Tick the following items:
- on soft reset
- daily (here you need to scroll to the right to select the icon with the 3 dots in it to set your schedule)
- show report (optional)
- show progress (optional)
Click DONE on the bottom left corner on your screen and job's a good 'un!
Edit 02 ~ 24 Feb 2010
Member jonbaker76 came up with a few extra tips to help alleviate the problem:-
1). Install MemMaid and follow settings provided by Beards & WB
[*]2). Disable the alarm (use G-Alarm maybe)
[*]3). Turn off Facebook updates
[*]4). Turn off Weather updates
[*]5). Turn off Internet Time Sync
[*]6). Wait a while before carrying out a soft reset, your Phone may just wake up

Guys,
We are starting to find a pattern building up here relating the problem with Sense.
Some users don't have problems with ROM 1.48 but others Do/Did (I used to) so we can't say v1.48 was okay.
However, it's the later ROM's which seem to have the greater of the problem which could relate to an issue with Sense.
i.e. Although evident in v1.48 it was not as strong but with either Cooked ROM's or updated ROM's the problem has been magnified.
A few Guys have now tried using their HD2 without Sense and report a stable platform.
What I am saying here is if you have the problem and you can afford not to use Sense then try running your Phone without it for a trial and see how it performs...... With enough info we can pass this on to HTC.
I had a situation where I switched the phone back on (from standby/power saving mode) only to find it was dead. To get it running again I had to perform a soft reset and, like you, I found that I had plenty of battery remaining. This happened only once in three weeks of usage and I'm not sure what caused it.
James
I had a similar issue a few days ago.
I picked the phone up and pressed the power button, but nothing happened. I did the same as you and assumed that it was flat (despite me being a charging maniac!) I plugged it in and got no charging light, so I popped out the battery and put it back in. It turned on first time then.
I wasn't really concered as it's only happened once in over 3 weeks, and I'd only recently upgraded the ROM so I was ignoring any little foibles like this.
Maybe it's a little more common than I thought?
this has happened to me twice since upgrading to the new recent rom.

Beards,
Did you have any diary appointments or alarms set on the device today that you did not immediately cancel on notification or multiple alarms set/going off? If you did then this is probably a notification queue issue locking up the phone, forcing a reboot.
This symptom was very common with the TYTN when it first came out and drove me absolutely bananas!
Long shot but let me know.
WB
No... nothing was left to tie the Phone up.
I remember checking everything before I went down to Theatre earlier this morning.
In a way I'm pleased it's not an isolated case and that others have experienced something similar (sorry Guys, I don't wish it on you ~ just a little relieved I'm not the only one).
I know HTC monitor the 'Camera Problem' topic (they've told me this directly). Maybe they have some super-duper exra-terrestial monitoring machine that can achieve the Dynamics of masspoint collections..
Yep, I too have had this issue.
Was using phone normally, left it on stand by by pressing the power key. Wanted to make a call, it did not turn on. Opened back cover to do soft reset, did not turn on, started sweating..., swore at the phone and took battery out and then replaced battery and pressed power button and what do you know, booted up like nothing happened.
Am using original shipped UK ROM. Have not upgraded.

I had the same problem - it happened only 2 times for a week, but it was nasty enough (and in combination with the camera problem) to make me finally send my phone back for a refund.
Basically the symptoms were similar - I would leave the phone somewhere for more than a couple of hours only to find it somehow switched off or something. The buttons light up when clicked, but the screen remains black - only battery removal helps and after that runs like normal...
I have quite a number of calendar notifications etc. - this might be a good clue!
I have the feeling that this thread might grow as big as the camera thread. Perhaps HTC fix that with a software update as well ...
A friend of mine had this problem with his HD2 on Sunday morning. He was surfing the web with it when it froze up. When he took the battery out/in again it wouldn't turn on.
He called HTC and they came to pick up his handset on monday. I guess he'll have to wait to get it back repaired Maybe he should have tried taking it out a few more times first.

I had something similar this morning, I have been using the alarm for the last 2 weeks with no problems. this morning the screen lit up, i saw the notification on the top but there was no noise. as a veteran of WM i dismissed it as "typical". however, the screen then went blank, the buttons would light up but nothing happened. I reset the phone to no avail, button still lit up but no screen - mild panic. removed and refitted the battery and all has been well since.
won't be too chuffed if it happens again....

Beards,
Notwithstanding that this may be some kind of new software or hardware problem, I just wonder about the notification queue.
I would try using a copy of SKTools to clear the notification queue ( I think you can do other tweaks as well but it's been a while since I used it) and see what happens.
Did you have any missed calls you did not answer today (another possible culprit, linked into auto screen lock = disaster).
I am simply putting ideas out for you to try to narrow the problem down. Don't know if any of this will work.
WB
PS: Just had another thought; have you installed an application onto your SD card that is on-screen? Used to have this issue with a weather application, sat on screen but installed to the SD card.
If the phone went into sleep mode and the application polled the weather servers then it would die a horrible death. De-installing and reinstalling to phone memory solved the problem.
Again its a long shot but you never know.

Ive had that same problem twice last night within th space of 1/2 hour and the today i ran fine up until about 5pm today, where it froze, I updated the rom on sunday from O2 1.43 hope this is not gonna be a problem, anyone know where to get O2 1.43 rom just in case I have to return

Even though my profession is based on absolute accuracy in detail, when it comes to finding out why the HD2 died I'll try any long-shot.
There were no programs loaded though and I know nothing was paged to make the Phone send any notifications.
I'll have a good check at possible programs/dll's later though.
Thanks.
I've had the same a few times. Probably the reason was overloaded main memory. I removed some mp3 files, but the situation wasn't change.
htc touch pro2 vs hd2... just got the answer!
a day ago... i was unsure about the upgrade. i had posted tis msg in xda but was advised by a senior member tat it was worth the upgrade n i culd find all my answers to the query here. here was my msg...
"hi all. with all the hypes surrounding htc hd2... n my htc touch pro2 fast losing its crown of being the best winmo device in the market... shuld i upgrade to the hd2? n watz wif the glass screen? wuldn't it crack easily? it's glass! appreciate everyone's take on this. the only selling point tat is tempting me away frm my pro2 is abt the speed... 1ghz vs my miserable 528mhz... sad. everyone's talking abt its blazing speed. is it tat obvious?!
then again there's tat camera issue... the infamous pinkish spot, which htc support claims it's related to the 1ghz dragon fella... software related... n restricted to only a selected few?! so it's like going2 the lottery n c who gets the infected piece is it?! bottom line is... my pro2 seems like a honda civic... n the hd2 is purportedly a nissan skyline, but wif so many question marks hanging over its head, shuld i still go for the upgrade? thnx!"
guess wat, after reading most of the threads here... i think i'll stick with the htc touch pro2. the hd2 has way too many issues... even worse than the camera thingy tat i knew abt... but the number of issues tat r highlighted here abt the hd2... is enuf2 make me say no to hd2.
This thread here reminds me to some issues with WinMo 6.5/Manila 2.5 ROMs for the Xperia X1: Over there in the forum, you can find quite some postings describing the "standby of death" problem.
Just very close to some of the other issues we now face with the "real" Leo, too. In fact, there are more "similarities" like the stand-by issue, and nobody was really able to clearly reproduce the problem as there seems to be no pattern. The same problems are not existing in WinMo 6.1/Manila 2.1 ROMs for the Xperia - but some in a WinMo 6.1/Manila 2.5 version, when I follow the thread correctly.
I do strongly believe that there are, underneath the hood of Leo´s operating system, quite some nasty bugs in WinMo as well as Manila. I cannot imagine another explanation why 2 totally different devices with very different hardware (parts) would show the almost exact same issues.
Of course, porting the Leo ROM to something like Xperia may bring some issues, but most apparently, most bugs are coming from MS and HTC, not the talented chefs here. (One more reason to look forward to custom ROMs for the Leo. No good sign for HTC though, frankly spoken...)
mine die this morning too ... alarm didnt go off
but press and hold the power button wake the phone up and alarm start ringing. Then I power it off, and all the other buttons does not turn on the phone other than press and hold power button = soft reset ... weird
Camera patch is out today
waiting for new ROM release
Same thing happened to me this afternoon. The phone wouldn't start up when I pressed the power button so I tried holding the power button down to force a soft reset. At one point all the buttons lit up but nothing more happened. Eventually I pulled the battery out, stuck it back in and then the phone started.

Did you install any applications from the market? Is your phone freezing while a certain application is open or does it freeze even on the homescreen? If you have a lot of applications installed try to deinstall and look if it becomes better. If not try a factory reset. If it still freezes than return it for a new one.
Would you mind saying what you were doing when it locks up?
If it's during Music, it doesn't actually lock up, it just shows a black screen for about half a minute. Everything still functions, it just doesn't show.
Two times trying to answer a call the screen would not unlock nothing would work I had to take the battery out and just todayit was sitting on my desk and it would not turn on when I tried to use it
The green message light was on very dim and I had to take the battery out
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have a feeling there is a bad batch of units out there.
Try factory reset and see if it continues to lock up, if it does, return it for another.

Sounds like a broken phone. Try a factory reset (if you return it they anyway ask if you did that) and if that won't help get a new one....

Same thing happened to me yesterday, the light was very dim green and the phone did not respond until I pulled the battery. It hasn't happened again.
I've already had to replace my Atrix for another issue. Right now my confidence in this phone is not very high, but it is brand new. Lots of issues will probably pop up and be fixed via software updates- at least I hope thats the case.
It really feels like all the issues people are having with this phone are software related. Maybe motorolla will just cave and give us gingerbread with no blur
I've had the same problem while playing music...over the past 3 days after about 30 minutes of tunes it'll lock up and after another 5 reset itself...i've done the reset after the second and it still does it...i'm bout to take it back and exchange it...i expect glitches but damn.
Motorola Atrix (stock)
AT&T Fuze (Energy.RAPHAEL.21916.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.sencity)
I have had the issue happen 2 me twice in 3 days, the last time was when adding the note widget to screen. It was not completely locked up just the touch screen, i could press the power off button but the touch screen would not let me shutdown
something you might want to try if a factory reset doesn't work would be a reinstall from the recovery menu.
power your phone off
hold the down volume key and the power button
release the power button once the phone begins to boot
keep holding the down volume button until you see "fastboot" at the top of the screen
now be careful, the down volume button navigates through the boot options and the up volume selects one
so press the down volume button until you come across "android recovery"
once you see it press the up volume button to select it
once you get to the screen with the exclamation mark tap the bottom right of the touchscreen, this should pop up the recovery menu
select wipe data/factory reset
let the phone do it's thing
good luck
I've seen this resolve some audio codec issues that were causing the phone's mic to not work, dunno if it'll work for your issue but it can't hurt to try.
best of luck

I have found a fix for my lockup issue. If the screen is on and lockup (no touch screen) press the power button 2, turns off the display and turns it back on and everything continues to work fine.

I have the same problem (screen randomly locks up once or twice a day, buttons dead) and have found the above "solution" to work perfectly, also. The problem however is that pressing the power button twice and unlocking the phone is not exactly elegant especially if the screen locks while you are trying to answer an incoming call.
I changed my battery settings to "performance mode" as I read somewhere that that might help. I will let you know if that seems to resolve the issue.
Changing battery setting doesn't seem to do anything. I still get my share of frozen/locked up screens a few times a day. Still have not figured out how to replicate the behavior. It really does seem random.
I've been suffering from this as well, I'm going to try to exchange my phone and see if that helps.
Exchanged my phone today. So far I haven't seen any locked/frozen screen issues. I am relieved. Maybe there are just a few bad units out there.
Also for what it is worth ... the lady at AT&T told me that taking out the battery while the phone is on would fix it. Since I never figured out how to replicate the behavior I couldn't verify that her suggestion would indeed actually fix the problem and demanded an exchange anyways.
atrix does lock up and have glitches
lock up glitch:
While in standby (screen black), it locks up. You obviously don't know when exactly it happens as it's lying around in standby. When you press the powerbutton to wake it up, nothing happens. You can try what you want, long press, several presses, just dead phone. As if the battery losts juice, but 2 times it happened and the battery was above 50%.
Tired to connect the charger while in that lock-up state. Nothing happens The notification light remains black as well.
The 2nd time this happened to me, I had the idea to call myself and see if just the powerbutton has a glitch and the phone is actually running just remaining in standby with a black screen. But nope, the phone didn't ring or wake up.
Only way to recover is to take the battery out.
I didn't mess with my phone and was very careful in which apps I installed. The only ones I have are very populoar 4+star apps:
extended controls
easy profiles
the other apps are most of the time not even running:
photoaf, vignette, imdb, nytimes, fb, skype, pandora, screen filter, droid light, prozoom5x camera
No games at all installed...
The 2nd glitch that happened to me a couple of times is that the finger print sensor is not working: It doesn't display any message as in " did not verify, too short, ..." it's just dead, the only way to get in is to punch in the number code.
This is typically fixed after switching the phone off fully.
Of course skype also doesn't work on my atrix (well known mic issue)
It happened to me as well. I had installed some apps but when it froze it had been off (the screen that is) so it was sitting then when I tried to open it by pressing the power button the green light came on but it would not wake. I removed the battery, replaced it then it did the same thing again (including the green light). I removed and installed the battery once more then it was fine. It must have been something in the backround but not sure as to what that was. Hasnt happened again though.

strange, skype worked for me... oh well.
did you ever find a solution for the lockup issue, have the same thing, very frustrating but not as frequent as you thankfully.
My Atrix started to freeze up when I undervolted the CPU using SetCPU and I would have to pull the battery out and restart it. I increased the voltage settings and it hasn't locked up since, so if you have undervolted your CPU and your phone is locking up, you should increase the voltages.
Hi,
Does anyone else have the same problem I have?
If I leave the phone running on battery for a couple of hours it is sometime impossible to wake it up by pressing the power button. Also the LED flashes white (not red). In order to get it working again I have to hold the power button a couple of seconds causing it to reset.
This happens on stock 4.2.1 and also in CM (4.2.1 and 4.2.2).
Seems like a HW problem? Should I send it in for repair?

I've had this issue as well. It may be an issue with one of your downloaded apps. I have gone back to stock without any 3rd party apps and I haven't had the issue yet. Going to test a couple days and see what happens.
Edit: Maybe if you post some of your 3rd party apps you downloaded we can see if we have some in common.
Sure, here are some of my 3rd party apps
Moxier Mail
Eniro
Hitta
Wifi Analyzer
CPU Spy
Subnet calculator
Quadrant
Dropbox
Facebook
Whatsapp
Viber
Spotify
Shazam
MX Player
Truecaller
Llama
Android Lost
Out of those, Facebook and Android Lost are the only ones we had in common. I'll report back on this thread if this issue returns on my freshly flashed stock device without any 3rd party apps.
Similar problem here...

Similarly, on two occasions now, I've gone to bed with the N4 on the charger, only to find it completely shutdown in the morning, and the battery unchanged from where it was when I plugged it into the charger. It required holding the power button down for quite awhile before I got a response and the unit rebooted. The first time, I didn't bother doing anything at all, but this morning, when it happened again, I called N4 support. I was advised to do a factory reset, and monitor it. If it did it again, they'll do an RMA. It seemed they would have sent another one right then if that's what I wanted them to do, but I told them I'd try the factory reset. They also sent an email with a direct contact link to the agent I spoke with in the event I need to return it.
My Device:
Nexus 4 16GB
Android 4.2.1
Kernel 3.4.0-perf-ge039dcb
Not rooted
I'll also post if the factory reset works. I've also read online, that holding the Volume Down and Power Button both for about 10 seconds, disregarding anything that appears on your screen, will shut your device down. Restart and, at least for several posters, the problem disappeared. Just an FYI. I'll try it if the reset doesn't provide the cure.
No joy....

Following up on my post yesterday, a hard reset did not help anything. Neither did an update to 4.2.2 for that matter. I also tried holding the Volume Down and Power Button until it shut down, and while the problem hasn't re-occurred, I really haven't provided enough time to tell yet. So Google is sending me another one and issuing an RMA. In the interim, while I'm waiting for the new one to arrive, I'll follow up if the VolDown and Power button has done anything.
I'm having the same issue. I just woke up, phone had a flashing white LED and would not boot. A reboot was neccessary. Is this a hardware failure?
The last couple of days I have not had WLAN activated. So far it is running fine.
I will activate WLAN today to see if the problem reappears.

Why would you think there's a correlation between the two? I do have problems with wireless-notifications; for example, messages on whatsapp are often delayed, where I get a notification at say 11PM when the message was sent 10:45PM. Do you also experience this?
No problem noted this morning...

I don't know whether holding the Vol Down and Power Button resolved the issue, but at least it didn't happen last night whereas it has been failing nightly when on the charger. Unfortunately, I was just notified that my replacement has already shipped, or I would tell them to hold off a day or two. For those of you experiencing this, you might try holding the Vol Down and Power Button at the same time until the device shuts down ignoring anything on the screen. Then simply restarting. I'm not saying that mine is fixed, only that it had a good night and that was the only thing I've done.
I will post again up until I have sent this device back. I have 21 days in which to return it or my credit card will be charged for real.

Mine also failed while on the charger a few times, but it also happened when not charging, so.... I'll try your solution. Why not!
This just happened again this morning. My alarm failed to go off, but the phone LED was flashing white. I could not turn the screen on. I did install some 3rd party apps yesterday:
Facebook
Tasks Free
reddit sync
Ally
IMDb
Pandora
Twitter
I tried the Vol Down + Power and that didn't work for me. I think I am going to RMA the device.
Yea...I have a few apps on my device, but not the ones mentioned here. So I don't think that can cause it. Hoping for more responses! I subscribed to this thread now.
Does anyone know if there is a bug report for this issue?
Not sure, don't think so as I've googled this quite alot. I just saw my telephone, which was idle next to me for about an hour, reboot itself. I saw the google and then the nexus logo without me even touching it. No white flashing LED this time, allthough that also has happened to me. This is getting very annoying now...
Google Support's reply on this
I have seen this happen to my phone more than a few times. I can't make it happen consistently though. I contacted the support hoping for a RMA, and today I received this response from them.
"Thank you for contacting us about your Nexus 4 and providing those details for clarification. This issue could be possibly not be a problem, it is a feature as with any Jellybean OS device; and goes in to the sleep state after some hours of inactivity - such as the details your describe when left overnight. It can go in to a deep sleep, where holding the power button for 30 seconds or more is what wakes the device up."
So this is a *feature*? It seems puzzling to me. I don't know if receiving a call would wake it up (if not, it would definitely be a problem).
I also tried different roms, PA and Xylon, and stock 4.22 with different kernels ranging from Franco to Motley. It would still happen. Rarely but it's still there. Also I am trying to see if changning the minimum clock speed to 1024 would change anything. I will report back once I have more info.
Still working so far...
I've not had a problem with mine since the Vol Down and Power Button shutdown. It may not even be related and may have just "healed" itself, or the problem has simply become intermittent and hasn't repeated itself yet...dunno unfortunately. Since my replacement will be arriving today, I may never know since I'll be shipping this one back to them. I may wait until Monday to ship it though, and see if it acts up again and repost if it does or doesn't.
Hopefully the replacement won't have this problem at all!
locked up
I don't think the flashing white-LED is a signifier of a problem. I think it is a different status message, like email or facebook, or something. I haven't found that documented anywhere, but I've noticed it is blue sometimes and white other times. Without being locked up.
My phone will lock up while charging overnight. I have turned off Dream State and the LED notifier thinking it was related to these. It did seem to be somewhat better after that, but the last two nights have seen the phone locked up.
Also, holding down the power button for 30 seconds will hard power it off at 10 seconds, it seems to me. That is typically how I deal with this lock up! Hold down the power button 10 seconds, release, press it again and wait for it to boot.
This is frustrating. I was thinking of rooting the phone so I can use a logwatcher, but I'm not sure I will see anything in the logs after booting the fracking thing.
But.. while I consider that I will start by uninstalling Facebook, Dropbox, and Twitter apps, based on seeing them on other people's lists.
I'm going to RMA the phone. Just a question, what charger do you guys use? I've been using a samsung charger (from my Galaxy S2), perhaps that's related? As it does happen while charging mostly, allthough I saw the phone reboot itself out of nowhere without it being plugged in yesterday too.
I've only used the Nexus 4 charger on mine. No others. I'm on my new device now but haven't sent the other one back yet. Probably tomorrow.
