I have an app idea that I would like to develop... except that I don't have the slightest clue on how to program in ANY language, but I AM willing to learn.
My idea is to have a barcode scanner that takes the scan from the camera, and then cross references it with online sites. This can either tell you what the prices are online, so you can compare the prices to whatever store you're in, or it can be used to make a massive catalog of your belongings, like your DVD's, CD's, books, etc.
I've got Visual C++ 9.0 Express installed so I figured that'd be the best place to start. The question is... Where do I start? I don't think I could even make a Hello World on this thing...
You won't get far with an Express Edition. These Editions can't handle Windows Mobile applications.
You must buy (or install a trial) VS Professional and the Windows Mobile 6 SDK.

I was afraid of that.
I do know that I have an old copy of VC++ 6.0 SOMEWHERE from many years ago with my original major, but I never really learned how to use it, even if I did find it. I'll search tomorrow. I'm tired and I'm heading to bed now.
Barcorama might be another good place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368798 .
the idea reminded me of the cuecat, which I got for free maybe 8 years ago at a radioshack. i think that project ultimately failed - since i havent heard about it since. this really has nothing to do with windows mobile, but it does have to do with your idea...

iNigma only does 2d barcodes and therefore it doesn't work with UPC's.

C# Express is actually the version I use to develop Barcorama. The only major problem with the Express edition (my opinion) is the lack of remote (on-device) debugging...
"I do know that I have an old copy of VC++ 6.0 SOMEWHERE from many years ago with my original major"
only at version visual studio 2002 if I recall correct did it support windows mobile
"iNigma only does 2d barcodes and therefore it doesn't work with UPC's."
a camera can work with 2d barcodes as easy as with 1d ones
recall a project with them using 2d barcodes to transfer data between 2 pda's
there are commercial apps out there which already reads both 1d and 2d barcodes
found many code tutorials which worked and were free tough dident work very well as the lighting have to be ok good
and the camera have to better then VGA like older devices have
not sure how you will get around the fact that barcodes are not really unique numbers
they are just numbers and 2 products can have the same number
in which case the store or storage or whatever
place their own barcodes over to tell them apart
but 2 diff stores could use 2 diff replament barcodes
any news on that one?
seems to be working for android:
http://compare-everywhere.com/
http://www.biggu.com/
is there any (commercial) app for winmo which can du this?
thanks
Couple of points:
1) You do not need Visual Studio to develop for Windows Mobile devices if you program in C/C++.
Just download Embedded Visual C++ 4 from Microsoft (its free!) and off you go.
2) Writing a bar-code recognition software is a bit too much for someone who claims to have no knowledge in development.
You need to learn the programming language first, then the specifics of programming under win32 and its WM version and then you have to dig around for various camera APIs since there is no real standard for accessing the camera on different devices.
All that provided you find an available image recognition algorithm you can use 'as is'.
3) Microsoft use to let people download a prototype app (no code just exe) that did exactly what you are planning, but I can't remember its name.
4) Redugar, product barcodes have a worldwide standard pattern: they consist of a country code, then manufecturers code and finally a product code (and posible a product category, I can't remember for sure).
I do know that a company can't just slap a code on their product (unless its for internal use). They need to register, and then they get a range of numbers assigned to them.
So while the product number part may be random and everlapping, I beleve in combination with country an manufecturer code the numbers are uniqu enogh for the perpose od such an app.
So does anyone have anything that works as a barcode scanner for products? I just saw the G1's barcode scanner and its accuracy on the product is simply amazing..take for instance, I scanned a bottle of gatorade and it even told me what flavor it was haha
Anyone know if there's something like this for us PPC users?
I want it!!!
yea this already exists on android. once we have a camera driver working (which is currently being developed) then the barcode scanner will work.
this is all on my htc vogue, btw. android runs almost flawlessly now thanks to dzo's hard work.
android is the future.

Its my understanding that Inigma is a 2D scanner and what we really need is a 1D scanner...
Why do you need a scanner? Isn't a bar code just a pictorial representation of ~ 10 to 15 digits... How hard would it be to just type the numbers in and then send them off to the site to provide the necessary cross referencing? It seems like the scanner is just a cool addition but not really necessary.

"smartphone" is generally used also for devices with touchscreen...
I think HTC is afraid of MS doing again what they have done with the media players business: they used other hardware vendors to create market perception and later they went for their own product (Zune) with a different DRM and left the "PlaysForSure" clan with cold feet.
Now that Apple has its own branded phone Microsoft will have to have a MS branded phone soon and that could mean bye bye to HTC and the other vendors, so better jump ship before it's too late.
This announcement could also be only a warning to MS; at the moment HTC is practically the only company in the world that could throw a blow at Microsoft: without HTC the MS market share in smartphones would fall to a level of insignificance and they would have to rebuild their mobile phone market share from scratch.

Not really, in terms of Windows Mobile devices and WM5, you had the Pocket PC and Smartphone edition, the latter of which is on devices without touch screen e.g. HTC Meteor, Canary, Tanager etc.
I don't know if you mean "generally" as in all devices that are smartphonish on the market - you've got a lot that's not touch screen there too e.g. N95.

With "generally" I mean what you read in market researches. When you read about the Symbian market share that includes both S60 (no touchscreen) and UIQ (touchscreen) phones. Same goes for Windows Mobile.
The term "smartphone" was not invented by microsoft (did they ever invent anything? ) and it means "phone where you can install and use third party software beyond java applets" as opposed to "feature phone" where you can only use what is preinstalled in the phone (and only add Java applets).
So can anybody make an OS which I for ex can put on my p3600 for ex.

HTC has the best position in the market because of the Windows line. When they abandone the Windows platform, they give their market share to HP for example.
HTC also knows that Microsoft integrates everything from Office, Exchange, VOIP, Sharepoint to Live, etc.
Saying one thing and do some expirements with Linux, puts the pressure on Microsoft for nice deals (cheaper OS) for more HTC profit.
I haven't looked for other sources, but, a reading of the article hardly supports the assertion that HTC is "officially abandoning" WM. I mean, the ONLY quote just says they're "looking at" other OS's.
Talk about exaggeration.

If HTC would evolve a bit and embrace the 3rd party app model present on the iPhone, enhance it a bit and add support for fetching data from hardware components like gps modules, not like java, but something like Adobe® AIR™ for mobile devices with offline capabilities, that would be great foe everybody, most of the apps we use are for improving/replacing the poorly designed windows mobile apps&interface, other can be fully replaced by web apps, codewallet for example, imagine it with offline and online modes, sync between both, and you have your passwords accessible on any device or desktop, multimedia editing is also possible using flash and server-side code, like picnik.com, so, it would be necessary to create new apps, but this new model would be far better than the current one, it would also eliminate the need for manual app updating, it would... heh, make cracking impossible, so, good for the devs for that and also for the easier&cheaper development(VS not needed, html+css+flash+javascript+rails[heh ]), it would also give HTC the freedom to create a sleek GUI(compiz and stuff?) since its easier to replace the linux gui than wmobile, no licensing fees from ms i think.

Get applications like you can get for the iPhone?
I have just had a 'demo' of a load of free apps for the Iphone on a colleagues Iphone and I must admit I was impressed and very surprised, I had always discounted the Iphone as an option for me due to the many (well documented) short commings for power users. However after seeing such applications as the Tioti TV+ which is so quick and smooth and lets you send remote record requests to a Sky+ box - somehting I have been desperate for. Along with great film and cinema applications and many other very neat applications which aren't available on Windows Mobile, I am begining to wonder if I made the wrong decision in purchassing my touch HD??!
Just thought I would share my thoughts with you all....I am sure I will get a barrage of abuse for this post, but would love to know if we think the future of windows mobile may include some more intuitive and consistently looking applications.
P.S. If anyone knows of a SKY+ remote record app which is designed for Windows Mobile I would love to know!
A related question from a relative novice when it comes to downloading and installing apps... is there anything like the iPhone appstore for Windows mobile apps - where applications are listed with screenshots, descriptions, what phones/resolution they work on, etc? I've seen lots of great home-grown apps, and lots of vendor websites that seem to be pedalling a specific product, but haven't seen anything that attempts to bring it all together?
Thanks,
Dave

You need to analyse your own requirements before deciding if iphone or HD is right for you.
For me, the lack of GPS software (google map doesnt qualify), office applications, user swappable spare battery, inability to support stylus, and lack of choices in software keyboard in iphone make it an unacceptable choice.
Another person's need might be different.

I've installed the JAVA components and they work on Windows Mobile 6.1 - the issue is that the software expects you to have a keyboard (or a keypad) attached to input various details .... so you can't use it on a Touch HD !
Thank you for all your comments and suggestions, however I don't beleive sites like handandgo etc are anything like the Iphone Appstore, the apps cost a lot more and you have no idea of compatability. I don't beleive you can easily browse for apps on your handset, like you can with for example the Iphone.
I am not saying I think the Iphone is the best choice of phone, but they certainly got somehting right with the app store and wondered if Microsoft will listen up and provide developers an easy route to dev similar apps for windows mobile?!
I Have tried all the Java Sky remote apps before and as you have spotted they do not work with a touch screen device if it doesn't have hardware buttons too. Also even if it did work it is not very user freindly - I was using this as a example of a really usefull app, which I am amazed has not been built for Windows Mobile touch devices too....it just seems weird why there are so many great little apps for the Iphone, which are so easy to download and browse though, yet it has only been about a relatively short time in comparison with Windows Mobile....I find this most annoying!
Anyway, thanks again for your input

Yes, the apps in WM are expensive and there is no simple app store. Rumours are around that MS will fix this.
Having said that, the app developers for WM are doing some great work. I have loads of apps on my HD (see other forum posts I've made recently).
I would like a TV guide app that brings in channels from across Europe. That is, one that would allow me to select my favorite channels.
Sorry the Sky+ thing did not work, as I said, I don't have any experience with this. I'm surprised the keyboard SIP did not work when using the java app.

Cheers Dave, no - not an Iphone...yet...I am happy to persevere with my WinMo device for the forseeable as I do belive I would miss, like others Sat Nav (which by the way I use TomTom and it looks and works great) ease of Exchange sync etc etc.
I just wanted to rant for a bit about the lack of decent and easily accesable apps for WinMo....in the hopes someone would point me in the direction of a lovely MS App Store (wishful thinking!). I hope you are right and wee do see something from MS soon, although I guess they will wait and in include it in Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7 - although by the sounds of it that won't be anytime soon :-(
And if anyone does ever find a decent TV guide and Sky + App then please remember this thread and post it for us!
Its also worth mentioning that although there are a lot of iPhone apps, and yes they are cheap, most are useless eye candy that have about 2 minutes worth of value in them.
Check out my list of apps here:

I don't know much about the Apple apps. But, I can say that some of these WM apps are really serious work and clearly have had lots of effort and thought applied to them.
My latest addition is Pocket Stars - a bit of astronomy fun for me, but a serious app for enthusiasts.
The iphone is for simple folk. The app store is for simple folk. IE it works.
WM is bit more complicated but gives those of you willing to use it a lot more freedom.
I do wish there were more apps and games for the HD.
I have both the Iphone and HD at home (well the Mrs has the iphone) once jailbroken the iphone is truly amazing and I almost wish i had one instead, but them my mrs reminds me why i dont have one, I would get board in no time. I played with hers (iphone that is) for a couple of days over the xmas break then went back to playing around on my HD.
Its still early days for the HD and remember the IPHONE has been around for quite some time now.
Give it a little time and the HD will be up there with the iphone, you already starting to see some really nice app/games coming out.
My only other wish would be some way to get multi-touch to work on HD as it makes games very playable on iphone.
The problem with Microsoft trying to replicate the iPhone App Store is that Apple have 2 different handsets to maintain, which are practically identical except for the GPS/3G.
There are many different versions of WM in use, with many software customisations by handset manufacturers and operators and varying hardware abilities.
I'm not sure how it would be possible to test the full range of devices that a particular application may work with. On top of that, people may or may not have updated the firmware for their device, which can break (or fix) applications.
I'd love to see it, but it's certainly more difficult supporting hundreds of different handsets customised by many operators rather than 1 and a bit
I saw on here that someone is working very hard to make a form of "app store" that will work on phones (credit to them for the effort) its called Gecko...i found the link on the forum. Give it time, I think it will come...

djteotancolis,
There's a strong mathematics program called SpaceTime. Long list of supported functions, many of which I don't think you'd use until a graduate level math class. I've used it to solve (and graph) differential equations, calulate Laplace transforms (and their inverses). It can create beautiful fractals in the complex plane, and zoom in on them seemingly infinitely. It's available at http://www.spacetime.us . Here's the best part - they've recently anounced that they're going to discontinue support for Windows Mobile devices (the official reason is that's it's too difficult to support the software on so many iterations of the OS on so many different devices) and they're offering the WinMo licenses for FREE!

Hi I'm looking for a solution for developing windows mobile applications without paying for a professional version of visual studio (I am a hobbyist and don't have the spare cash for such an outlay). I'm sure I'm not the only one in the same situation here.
Options:
1. Visual Studio 2008/2010 Professional 90 Day Trail
Temporary solution, which I'm using now.
2.Windows Mobile Development Without Visual Studio
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/WiMoSansVS.aspx
Although I've tried this method and it works, I've realised I am not familiar enough to do the programming I need without the support and tools which Visual Studio provides.
3. Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone
http://winspark.net/2010/03/15/download-visual-studio-2010-express-for-windows-phone/
I've yet to try this, the documentation does not mention windows mobile (only windows phone), logic would suggest that it would include support for windows mobile (as we all know, logic may not apply). Even the comparison charts I've looked at don't mention it (I hope due to the re-brand of windows phone).
Can anyone confirm if this would provide a suitable free solution for windows mobile development?
Hopefully this can be answered before my free trail I'm using in option 1 expires so it can give me time to attempt to get a full Pro Version instead. Since it took me a week on and off, of uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio, SDKs, .net frameworks etc etc to get VS2008Pro trial to work correctly, I don't want to try it until I've run out of my period or finished what I'm working on.
4. Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2
Not sure how this would compare with later versions, and also if wm6.5 would be supported. Hopefully it's a good fall-back option if it's still available.

PC Plus Magazine did a big review of the express versions and said that they "expressly" leave out Mobile development.
Good to practice on, but not for WM5/WM2003 development so far I think. If you're desperate, you can get a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 from many places, and that will let you do pretty much everything, but the emulator is not perfect. This can be downloaded from elsewhere though. So, pretty much full development for free!

Anyone tried option 3?
I'm sure it will help a lot of people starting out if this can be confirmed to be a free development solution for wm6.x.
I can even start with some tutorials to get people started off.
My poll, showed people were interested but needed a starting point [6 out of 10]:

Little options
When you like to use a MS Visual Studio environment, I think you have little options. According to this article on the msdn forum, option 3 is... wel not an option since only version 7 is supported...
To my knowledge you can not use the 6.5 (6.1/6.5) SDK on the express versions (2005/2008) of Visual Studio. Maybe you're in luck and some 'hack' is around to be able to install the SDK on a express version, but I never 'googled' for it. By default you cannot install the sdk on a 2008 express version.
Your option 2 (Windows Mobile Development Without Visual Studio) looks like the only available free option...

This is option is probably your best solution. Don't know enough about MS licensing to be sure it's legal though

It's kinda what I feared:
Option3 - MS want to move people to Windows Phone 7 and off windows mobile, so sort of understand this (although way to annoy a lot of people in the process).
Yep WM is not supported in the other Express versions, but thought 2010 would be backwards compatible. I'm not sure what you do if you want to develop for both platforms...
Puts me off learning to develop for it really, might consider a different platform next time I get a phone.
Hack an Express version Option - Yeah I don't think that's in the T&Cs. Getting a genuine Pro Trial version was difficult enough to get running correctly.
Option 2: Since it's a case of installing tools which they've freely released without modifying them it's probably ok.
Edit - MS Rip:
Visual Studio 2008 Professional £709.99 (and they charge postage...). I can't begin to understand why they want to make it so difficult just to write apps when they give everything else away with Express, plus now the fact they give away Windows Phone 7 development via VS2010.
Current result is:
Best Option is #1 - after 90 days there is of course a problem...
Option #2 - Perhaps possible once you have learned enough to do without the form designer and emulator or you have most of your application completed already.
Option #3 - Dead End for windows mobile.
Option #4 - Not found a version which I can trust to use. Consider the size and amount of stuff being installed, plenty of room to sneek some nasties in if obtained from a bad source.
Personally, I think if you are interested in developing for the 1st time, then go for option #1, you may find you've done all you want to in 90 days and if not you have option 2 to finish off what you were working on.
I would also consider backing up your system before you do development work to ensure you have a "clean" system to go back to (ensure you don't get your computer clogged up with VS files that linger etc - VS also can require a lot of installing/uninstalling of SDKs etc to get running correctly so a good back up is very important).
Just got done installing Visual Studio 2010 and was looking for the SDK's. Unfortunately the search for information has only lead to one thing.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sa69he4t.aspx
No support for WM6.5 in VS2010. Too bad. Guess going back to Visual Studio 2008. MS seems to bet on WP7 for Visual Studio in the future. I did find some rumors that WM 6.5 Comaptible SDK's should follow a couple month after release of VS2010 but so far nothing more then rumors.

Yeah it's very annoying. Fortunately the 90 days trial works out quite a long time if you are working on something for the whole time.
Fingers crossed they will keep VS2010 free for WM6.5 too if they do release them. It would make sense to allow people to develop for both at the same time IF as they promised it is as easy to port to WP7. On plus side, the graphics side of WM6.5 SDK is rather poor which WP7 hopefully won't suffer from so much (just hope it's not too restrictive + we can use it if any good on WM6.5 phones...).

VS2010 has retailed. There will most likely not be any WM6.5 updates for it.
You can pick up a cheap copy of VS2008 Pro on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-Visua...ultDomain_0&hash=item5639aedd8d#ht_2892wt_911
Even for a hobbyist, $115 is pretty damn cheap. You could probably even pick up second hand VS2005/2008 for even cheaper than that.
Remember that only the professional versions of 2005/2008 will allow for Windows Mobile development. Sure, it sucks, but WinMo is a business-orientated OS - it was never meant to allow for your average joe programmer to whip up a quick Pacman clone...

You need an academic licence for it (which is free via the ms dream-thingy) - if you are an academic.
2005 standard is fine and as you say 2008 pro.
I'm guessing it was more of a move to reduce support required for it since WinMob wasn't much of a money spinner. I would expect the SDK will come in time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's pro for 2010 only (I get the general impression MS are keen to put windows mobile far behind them).
The 90 day trial seems to be fine for now, amazing how much you can do in that time anyway.
You can get the community tech preview (CTP) here:

Just tried it myself.

Unfortunately not, but for the hobby stuff it's possible to just create a VM or something to handle it instead. Redoing the VM every 3 months isn't much of a problem for casual use. I was curious if there was any proper way to do it that was all.
The more I use VS the less I need things like the designer, since as you get more advanced the designer is useless.
In Lumia Phone Test, I can read the pressure. It updates about every half second. I know this is not of the official SDK, but at least this means the receptor is not just use to feed data to the GPS for a faster lock (as suggested on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17913651/accessing-barometer-data-from-lumia-1020)
My phone is unlocked and rooted. Any suggestion on how to do that without the SDK in WP8.1??

It's a windows 10 app. The api has barometer access in windows 10 as explained in the stackoverflow responses, so it's not very fun to do.
I'd like to do the same but on 8.1 where the barometer API is not documented

Lumia Phone Test ? where do you mean ?
if you can find witch is running this test you can simply dissemble application Xap/Appx and then find the library have access to this sensor then you can import it in your app and use it
Hope you got it , if you tell me where did you find this test exactly maybe I can help you too .

Grab "Lumia Phone Test" app, reflect/disassemble (depends of compiler/language), use the code with similar permissions.
Or sell your handset on ebay and buy L-950/XL
P.S. In a year 2014, Nokia had an internal project called "SensorCore SDK" (I was a member of the internal testers) but as far as I remember, barometer sensor wasn't implemented in that SDK...

Lumia Test is a diagnostic tool running on the PC. You can use it to read the status of the various receptors. It's not a XAP
Try it from: http://download-fds.webapps.microso...covery/LumiaPhoneTestApplicationInstaller.exe
It will show you the pressure in kpa, and update it.
Any help would be welcome, as it would be a cool app for a cool phone!!

Why would I sell a 1020 working fine on WP8 to get a 950 with W10M?? If I wanted a crappy phone with a buggy OS I could use a android
It would be cool to figure a way to access the barometer, but I'm not sure attacking an application run on the PC is the best way to start.

Really your 1020 is better than 950 and even 950XL
you have at least flip to silence , DT2W , Working with gloves , Project screen over USB and Interop Unlock but no one of these features are not present for this phone .
It's a Sh**Ship not a flagship device .
I will check that app you provided to see what's going on but maybe it make long to check because of my final exams at university.
Edit : Aha now I've got it how does it work it switch to test mode It's not related to OS test .
1020 is a good photo phone, but barometer is the least reliable sensor on a smartphone. It's just a gimmick promoted by Samsung a few years ago.
@charlotted, first of all, L-950 isn't "crappy"; it's nice looking, fast handset with a good camera (also camera is much faster than 1020), sd-card (it's a long waiting "killer feature" for me) and great screen (way better than 1020).
Second, if program you've mentioned before, for desktops only, I can say my previous advice will not work for you.
What I can suggest: copy all dlls from your phone to PC and search for "barometer" or "pressure" keywords, maybe you'll find something interesting. Otherwise, the only hope for the upcoming (theoretically, nobody sure) W10M for 1020 (and if MS will add barometer sensor API for the old WP handsets).
