Shift Problem! (Internet, GPRS, 3G, H...) - Shift General

Hi ppl,
I have one Htc Shift and installed all Updates, windows, office, all last updates, Vista SP1,…, I also have one problem, when I have modem connected the hardware(modem in vista) disable and enable automatic and lost Internet, after 10s Internet again good, after 2 or 3m disable hardware and Internet lost… You have this problem? Solutions?
I wait your help
Regards,
Xavier Soares

Hello Xavier,
Just wondering if you WiFi is active. If so, could you check if you don't have a known WiFi AP in the near proximity? (Then the Shift may try to connect to it, getting limited connectivity, disabling the connection with Modem part... But going back to GSM/UMTS again, etc...
Just an idea among other possibilities...
How steady is your connection on the Snapvue side?

No friend, I also have the modem connect, the wifi and BT off!

Hi,
maybe it is this: You do not lose the connection when you use it with the power adapter, right? You lose the connection, using the battery, right?
If that is the case, this is the solution:
3G + power adapter = all modes work.
3G + battery = high performance only works, but you can use the settings of "balanced"
S.

Friend Settembrini yes, I use with battery in "balanced" mode! I go see the option Balanced...
Now I already the Option USB selective suspend setting to disable! Is this?
Regards

Hi Xavier,
so the solution is simple look at the formula I gave.
If you use the power adapter all energy modes work with 3G.
But! When you use the Battery you must change to high performance. When you use high performance you can change all the options like you have them in balanced mode that doesn't matter. Battery = high performance and 3 G works.
So it is like this:
3G + power adapter = all energy modes work.
3G + battery = high performance only works, but you can use the settings of "balanced"
S.

Don't know i I understand your problem correct, but I had a problem after upgrading to SP1, after that, the Vista side lost it's modem connection often. It had nothing to do with power connections, it was unstable both on battery and adapter. I have not reinstalled and NOT upgraded to SP1 and now the modem works as intended!

Hi,
this is not a new problem it was discussed before in this forum a long time ago. And believe me, what I have written above was the problem for many who bought the gadget months ago.
If you have a look around in the forum you can find lots of information about this and the solution is the one I pointed out.
Basta!

I had the same problem. And Settembrini solution worked for me. Try to choose high perfomance, in energy settings, and 3G connection will be active all the time.
If you need further assistance PM me we can talk in Portuguese...

Getting old...
Thanks. I completely forgot that issue and the solution proposed, in the Forum. Shame on me, really, I had the very same problem solved, thanks to your posts!

Now I test in mine and is very good

Not here,
I lose the modem connection quite regularly, but admittedly while travelling, may be caused bij entering elevators and the like. Turning off and then on again of the modem solves it.

3G Modem
Hi
Thank You for this post.
I am traveling and now can use Vista with 3G.
Why do you have to use high performance setting?
Seems if you are on the move, you need to conserve battery!

Help
I now have 2 SIM cards and have setup 2 modem connections, one for AT&T and other for Fido(Canada).
Now, neither one of my modem connections will work with Vista side of Shift.
I have a stable Edge/GPRS connection on Fido where exchange/gmail/weather work, when I switch to Vista, no modem connection.
I have done the following:
have Shift connected to AC power/have power under high performance
have reset snapview a number of time
do not play with modem setting in Communication Manager in Vista
I cannot get the modem to work in Vista, in fact, I was in US 2 weeks ago and was able to get modem to work for 2 days (was able to make Skype voice call on HSDPA network) under Vista
I called HTC tech support, they have so many new people that know squat about the Shift, they claim they will call me back later tonight.
What am I doing wrong!!!!!!!
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update
I have some updated and interesting info plus my issue is still not resolved.
In the modem connection settings, after I deleted one of the modem settings, the AT&T medianet setting, the Fido (Canada) connection worked once.
I have still tried all the suggestions listed in the 3 or 4 posts for issues with 3G, after Vista hibernated, the modem connection in vista would not work.
I have confirmed with the carrier, they do not block tethering with the plan I am on and their are no special settings
HELP, any other suggestions!!!

Modem-link Bluetooth howto?

According to the big Wizard thread on HoFo, the lack of BT as an option in Modem Link is MS design intent, but instructions for adding BT to Modem Link are in the i-mate document ‘Guidelines for using i-mate K-JAM as a Bluetooth Modem.PDF.
Does anyone have this doc, or does anyone know how to turn the K-Jam into a BT modem?
Thanks in advance...
Dox.
The document your talking about is here:
http://www.clubimate.com/support/KJ...r_using_i-mate_K-JAM_as_a_Bluetooth_Modem.pdf
but I haven't been able to get it working with my K-JAM and laptop using the MS Bluetooth stack. I keep getting the "error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem". I've followed all the setups successfully but cannot connect. I can even query the modem from the laptop ?! Help anyone ?
Doh! Thanks firas... I was expecting some reg hack to enable it in modem-link, but all the doc says is 'use the DUN profile in the MS BT stack... I should have guessed... :$
I tried it, paired the wizard with my iPAQ 4700, set it as the BT modem and bingo logged into Skype (as a test) from the 4700 with no problem. 4700 has no GPRS (and wifi turned off), old nokia has no SIM in, so it had to be through the wizard, but the 'G' icon didn't chage to the connected one even though the connection worked. I've yet to instal SPB GPRS monitor, but will do and see if it logs the traffic.
Can your laptop connect to a regular (Nokia/SE) BT phone's DUN profile?
Dox
Hey Dox, I've finally managed to establish an EDGE connection over bluetooth with my laptop. Just wanted to let you know regarding SPB GPRS Monitor to be careful with it. After I installed it my KJAM's backlight would always be off even after a restart. Only way I could fix it was to hard reset and reinstall everything except for that one. You might wanna check around to see how others have faired with it before installing it yourself.
SPB GPRS Monitor
Hi firas,
Glad you have it working buddy. I gave up on the BT dongle on my laptop (even with widcom drivers instead of the 3com supplied ones) long before I got the Wizards...
Thanks for the heads-up re gprs monitor too. As it happens, I had already installed it on my own Wizard as my Voda 'data' bundle covers gprs,MMS and SMS from the same pool, and I wanted to see how many 'SMS' worth of data I was using. I haven't had the backlight problem you mentioned, but will be wary.
When I installed it from the O2 companion CD, it installed okay, but (I guess because of the Active rubbish) there's no Today plugin with that version. I turn the titlebar icon off, as its implementation is clumsy, and used the today plugin to monitor, and as access to the reports. Might try an SPB update over the top...
Anyway, reconnected from my 4700 surfed for a bit fine, and still no sign of the Today 'G' icon showing connected and no traffic in GPRS Monitor. Guess it's back to my old registered version on the iPaq end of the link...
Thanys again for the tips and warnings firas...
Catcha later
Dox
Glad to be of any help Dox. I've also had the same problem with the G icon not changing colors to show that it's connected when using the GPRS (EDGE) connection on the KJAM from my laptop (although I can surf the Internet just fine). So I guess we can just add that to the ever growing list of bugs in the KJAM (or WM5) :x
Hi Firas, I want to ask you. Is your service provider MTC or Wataniya? and what about the downloading speed using dun profile is it slow or fast?
Hi ysq2002. I'm currently using Wataniya and I'm getting download speeds between 128 - 170 Kbps ( 16 - 21 KBps) using DUN on my KJAM which is great for Kuwait. I've tested it in Kuwait City, Surra (not south Surra), Sulaibikhat (Maternity Hospital) and even Kabd (Chabd) and have gotten the above mentioned speeds. I used to have MTC for several years and I tested my MTC phone line beside my Wataniya phone line recently in Chabd and was only getting 20 - 32 Kbps ( 2.5 KBps - 4 KBps ) on my MTC phone !!
Yes firas.Yesterday, I bought kjam. The internet speed was very good using Edge. Much, much better than PDA2k which has no support for edge

Hi Firas, could you please tell me how did you make the KJAM bluetooth to work as a modem and the laptop can connect to it?when i tried to dial from my lapotp,i got error 692 hardware error, can you help?thanks a million.
anyone can help?
To be honest with you I don't know what I did differently that finally got it working. I followed the instructions in the above mentioned PDF at least 10 times and it finally worked ?! Try going to device manager on your computer, uninstall any Bluetooth Modems. Go to the Bluetooth settings and remove any pairing between your laptop and your phone and start all over again. Take it step by step according to Club Imate's document.
Sorry I can't be of anymore help.
EDGE !!
His Firas;
I've read some threads about EDGE in the forums; but i swear i can't get an exact and easy-to-understand meaning of EDGE !!! all what i got is that it's 3 or 4 times faster than GPRS connection !! what is EDGE, plz don't give me high-tech definition ?? and tell me, if you connect to the internet on your wizard using EDGE, how do you know the exact speed (considering that the laptop doesn't exist) ?? thanx in advance buddy ..
EDGE is also known as EGPRS (Enhanced GPRS) and can theoritically reach speeds of 384 kbit/s. It is an upgrade to current GPRS networks and is much faster than regular GPRS which operates at 30–70 kbit/s. So if your mobile telephone company provides EDGE (EGPRS) and your phone supports EDGE it will run at EDGE speeds (usually up to 230 Kbps). If your phone only supports GPRS it will still work with an EGPRS network but will run at a slower speed (usually around 40 - 50 kbps). EDGE is available in some parts of the US, Europe, and Middle East (not sure about Asia). Do not confuse it with UMTS which is a very different technology and is built on different networks and offers even faster speeds.
Here are a few web sites that offer free speed tests:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
well, thank you so much, i got the clear idea now and thanx again for the websites
7ayyaak Allaah Glad I could help !

Can connect via Wifi but can't surf or skype

Hi I have a wifi issue and can't find any other related posts. I can connect to wifi networks however when I use IE, Opera or Skype the programs seem to time out and say can not find network although the icon and conections tab say I connected. I have check all the posts and even the manual and I seem to have all the settings correct. Has anyone seen this before, have overlooked something? any help to get me connected and surfing would be great.
thanks and happy new year to all members

I solved similar problem with my HTC Trinity by changing WLAN Power Save Mode from "Best Battery" to "Best Performance".
i tried that and it still didn't work,
thanks
What kind of network are you connected to? if you are on a home network that has an ISP which requires a login, then that could be the problem. A friend of mine has a setup like that where even with the wireless router he still logs on via the PC and not the Router.
worked for me

Thanks for speaking up. I can finally wifi again. :-D
hi all,
Ifigured it out, or at least I got it working. Not really sure what I did, but as people suggested I changed everything to connect to "work" and this seemed to do it, I want to try connecting to a couple other networks to see If I can figure out exactly what i did right.
thanks for the help, Mike

3G connection always going down

I don't know if there is someone always experiencing this but my connection, through modem, is always dropping under Vista in SnapVue it works correctly... Does anyone has this problem also?
Change your power mode to "high performance" in vista, reset snapvue and see how it goes from there.
I find that SnapVue causes most of the issues with 3G...if the problems persist I do a soft reset - everything is usually fine after that.
AI also have the weather update set to manual and the email too - if I leave them on auto they tend to interfere with the Vista side when I'm wanting it to work flawlessly.
I agree, make the WM side as inactive as you can, this improves the stability of 3G considerably.

After testing all that was said here I found out that the best way to keep it stable was choose high perfomance in energy profile of VISTA.
Found also that what happens is not loosing 3G connection, in fact, what happens is that I ear a sound, equal to the one when you disconect a device from usb, and a couple of seconds after I ear that sound again, like if you connect something to the USB ports.
So what happens is like if VISTA lost the connection to the 3G modem hardware. I've tried to deactivate power management for USB, through device manager, but that doesn't change this behaviour, the best way I found was choose high perfomance in energy profile of VISTA.
Hi,
yes, that has been said a thousand of times in other threads.
It is like this:
3G + power adapter = all modes work.
3G + battery = high performance only works, but you can use the settings of "balanced"

Update
Hi,
I think I have found the problem.
I liberated my Shift late on weekend.
In order to have Vista side to work, I need to attach to Vista via the USB tool.
Once I did that, it looks like I have my Fido connection.
I will test later today.

Atnt pay-go media net hsdpa help

Hi all, need help with my liberated shift. It was working fine for the past 2 wks that I have had it. 3G worked flawlessly on both wm/vista.
I had installed Mozilla firefox browser on the vista side 2 days ago and now I can't get a connection. The wm side shows the connection to be 3g but I am not recieving any push mails or weather updates at all.
When I tried to manually send/receive I get an syncro error with no internet connection, yet the display shows 3g?
On the vista side, it just shows the connection to be local only. I uninstalled the Firefox/restarted but this problem is not going away. By the way..I have the performance at the vista side set to "high performance" as well. Please help me out...
Thank you
Same problem here since 5 minutes, re-installed german ROM, Provider E-Plus BASE, Data flat.
No idea, what happen...
What is really strange is that I am showing full bars @ 3g on the wm side...hopefully someone can bring some light to this matter...but glad that it's not a hardware issue as I am really enjoying this device..despite the battery life.
I had the same problem. It went away after updating connection settings in WM. My shift seem to periodically need that (or perhaps the "switch off..." that follows). Sorry if that was an obvious suggestion, but it realy helped me from a similar problem.
Also, the new usb... driver included in the driver update is said to ignore powersettings on vista. Since upgrading, I have run on powersawer mode without any network problems (provided that I safley remove usb stuff like SD or Lan, before hibernating vista). Have anyone else seen that?
as usual..thanks to all for the help... the real culprit was myself, as i had forgotten to pay the bill for the data service...all is good now... hehe.. so the only item that remains to be solved for me with this great device is the battery...all else is good!
thanks

How I solved Wifi problem

Lately I have been reading many post related to Wifi problems in the HD. I had the same. Even I was very near my router I couldn't connect to the net and the signal was very weak.
So I entered my router configuration and I found a solution.
Before, for security options I had: WPA-PSK [TKIP] then I changed to WPA2-PSK [AES] (of course you also have to change your HD connection configuratoin), and now it works great¡¡¡¡
Now I have all the bars for the signal and I can connect very easily.
Hope it works for other people
I have a similar WiFi connectivity problem, but after reading of the poor service provided by most vendors and HTC itself, I will try to gather some more experience with the problem before I contact HTC or my vendor, and hopefully find a solution. Bellow is my experience so far:
I own an HTC Touch HD since January and have a similar problem, only it surfaced last week. Before I had only used the WiFi connectivity briefly. The problems started after I installed an AP on my house expressively for the new PDA. The node is fully open and set to B/G/N protocols.
After a couple days of medium (couple hours per day) use the WiFi connection suddenly quit, the device would try to connect (the top bar showing the WiFi connection animation continuously) and after a few moments gave up with a dialog box stating the current network settings were wrong (even thou they worked fine a few hours earlier).
I tried several hot and cold resets, but only solved the problem after flashing a new ROM; even then the same symptoms reappeared after a couple of days of regular use. Again no re-setting would cure the problem, and now not even flashing the ROM again would work. Nonetheless, some hours latter the WiFi would connect perfectly with the same nodes it refused to before, and in very short time.
I have witnessed this cycle twice and have yet not been able to find a trigger for it, but will keep my eyes open for any tell tale signs, and post any findings here.
I could add to the above mentioned problems.
i got a new hd just few days back.
The wifi worked great. But now it doesnt.
I have disabled wifi, so can start it whenever i require.
I click on wifi button to enable it.
Then open opera, try any website.
it will open fine.
For instance say my email at gmail.com
Now after that if i try to open anysites or even continue with my mail, it shows error saying connection not available.
One of the workaround is to go back to toggele wifi off and switched it on.
Not sure if anyone faces a similar issue.
I's been about a week since my last post and I have already witnessed a couple of cycles of WiFi connecting perfectly and then not connecting at all.
No matter the settings I try after it decides not to connect, it won't. Even to nodes it had connected perfectly and fast jus minutes before.
I thought re-flashing might help but so far has proven ineffective. Once I thought some part of the non-volitile memory was causing the problem since after I cleared the memory I could connect for a while.
Any thoughts anyone?
Same problems here.
For the last hour I have been reading 10ths of threads here concerning WiFi problems.
My HD's WiFi worked fine on my home and outside for about 2 months. Now it doesn't. It reports connection, but no program can use the internet. At best, it seems to be able to exchange some Kbytes the for just a few seconds after a connection is established. Then nothing. Connected but unusable.
Tried everything Internet/My Work/My ISP, WAP enabled/disabled, soft/hard reset, everything.
When connected through ActiveSync everything works fine, all programs see internet.
Has anybody taken their HD to the service? Has any HTC service worldwide identified the problem as hardware and solved it by replacing something?

I have just encountered a similar problem, but already used wpa/wpa2 with aes. Have tried a hard reset with no joy. My old HTC Touch has no probs connecting via wifi nor does my laptop so I would surmise that the prob is with the HD and not the router.
I am going to try flashing with the latest version of Duttys 6.1 rom and see what gives.
Edit: Tried flashing with new rom with no success. Take a look at this post.

There are a couple of files to download but i only used the second ie this one.

Now no problems and can connect via wifi no probs, ip address assigned by dhcp.
Try to go into WiFi settings and move the power slider to max performance. I need to do it here to access my router. This happened also with my HTC TyTN II, with any recent radio firmware. The original WM 6.0 ROM and it's radio work fine in low power mode, but the new ones appear connected but are always at 1 Mbps and there's no traffic until you move the slider to performance mode.
You go into WiFi settings and you configure manual IP and DNS so as router.
DNS is important.
Whit manual configuration, Wifi work always.
(sorry for my english)

This is not a solution. I didn 't buy the device to be able to connect to my home WiFi only. What about public hotspots? Or hotels? Or whatever outside your home?
