According to the big Wizard thread on HoFo, the lack of BT as an option in Modem Link is MS design intent, but instructions for adding BT to Modem Link are in the i-mate document ‘Guidelines for using i-mate K-JAM as a Bluetooth Modem.PDF.
Does anyone have this doc, or does anyone know how to turn the K-Jam into a BT modem?
Thanks in advance...
Dox.
The document your talking about is here:
http://www.clubimate.com/support/KJ...r_using_i-mate_K-JAM_as_a_Bluetooth_Modem.pdf
but I haven't been able to get it working with my K-JAM and laptop using the MS Bluetooth stack. I keep getting the "error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem". I've followed all the setups successfully but cannot connect. I can even query the modem from the laptop ?! Help anyone ?
Doh! Thanks firas... I was expecting some reg hack to enable it in modem-link, but all the doc says is 'use the DUN profile in the MS BT stack... I should have guessed... :$
I tried it, paired the wizard with my iPAQ 4700, set it as the BT modem and bingo logged into Skype (as a test) from the 4700 with no problem. 4700 has no GPRS (and wifi turned off), old nokia has no SIM in, so it had to be through the wizard, but the 'G' icon didn't chage to the connected one even though the connection worked. I've yet to instal SPB GPRS monitor, but will do and see if it logs the traffic.
Can your laptop connect to a regular (Nokia/SE) BT phone's DUN profile?
Dox
Hey Dox, I've finally managed to establish an EDGE connection over bluetooth with my laptop. Just wanted to let you know regarding SPB GPRS Monitor to be careful with it. After I installed it my KJAM's backlight would always be off even after a restart. Only way I could fix it was to hard reset and reinstall everything except for that one. You might wanna check around to see how others have faired with it before installing it yourself.
SPB GPRS Monitor
Hi firas,
Glad you have it working buddy. I gave up on the BT dongle on my laptop (even with widcom drivers instead of the 3com supplied ones) long before I got the Wizards...
Thanks for the heads-up re gprs monitor too. As it happens, I had already installed it on my own Wizard as my Voda 'data' bundle covers gprs,MMS and SMS from the same pool, and I wanted to see how many 'SMS' worth of data I was using. I haven't had the backlight problem you mentioned, but will be wary.
When I installed it from the O2 companion CD, it installed okay, but (I guess because of the Active rubbish) there's no Today plugin with that version. I turn the titlebar icon off, as its implementation is clumsy, and used the today plugin to monitor, and as access to the reports. Might try an SPB update over the top...
Anyway, reconnected from my 4700 surfed for a bit fine, and still no sign of the Today 'G' icon showing connected and no traffic in GPRS Monitor. Guess it's back to my old registered version on the iPaq end of the link...
Thanys again for the tips and warnings firas...
Catcha later
Dox
Glad to be of any help Dox. I've also had the same problem with the G icon not changing colors to show that it's connected when using the GPRS (EDGE) connection on the KJAM from my laptop (although I can surf the Internet just fine). So I guess we can just add that to the ever growing list of bugs in the KJAM (or WM5) :x
Hi Firas, I want to ask you. Is your service provider MTC or Wataniya? and what about the downloading speed using dun profile is it slow or fast?
Hi ysq2002. I'm currently using Wataniya and I'm getting download speeds between 128 - 170 Kbps ( 16 - 21 KBps) using DUN on my KJAM which is great for Kuwait. I've tested it in Kuwait City, Surra (not south Surra), Sulaibikhat (Maternity Hospital) and even Kabd (Chabd) and have gotten the above mentioned speeds. I used to have MTC for several years and I tested my MTC phone line beside my Wataniya phone line recently in Chabd and was only getting 20 - 32 Kbps ( 2.5 KBps - 4 KBps ) on my MTC phone !!
Yes firas.Yesterday, I bought kjam. The internet speed was very good using Edge. Much, much better than PDA2k which has no support for edge

Hi Firas, could you please tell me how did you make the KJAM bluetooth to work as a modem and the laptop can connect to it?when i tried to dial from my lapotp,i got error 692 hardware error, can you help?thanks a million.
anyone can help?
To be honest with you I don't know what I did differently that finally got it working. I followed the instructions in the above mentioned PDF at least 10 times and it finally worked ?! Try going to device manager on your computer, uninstall any Bluetooth Modems. Go to the Bluetooth settings and remove any pairing between your laptop and your phone and start all over again. Take it step by step according to Club Imate's document.
Sorry I can't be of anymore help.
EDGE !!
His Firas;
I've read some threads about EDGE in the forums; but i swear i can't get an exact and easy-to-understand meaning of EDGE !!! all what i got is that it's 3 or 4 times faster than GPRS connection !! what is EDGE, plz don't give me high-tech definition ?? and tell me, if you connect to the internet on your wizard using EDGE, how do you know the exact speed (considering that the laptop doesn't exist) ?? thanx in advance buddy ..
EDGE is also known as EGPRS (Enhanced GPRS) and can theoritically reach speeds of 384 kbit/s. It is an upgrade to current GPRS networks and is much faster than regular GPRS which operates at 30–70 kbit/s. So if your mobile telephone company provides EDGE (EGPRS) and your phone supports EDGE it will run at EDGE speeds (usually up to 230 Kbps). If your phone only supports GPRS it will still work with an EGPRS network but will run at a slower speed (usually around 40 - 50 kbps). EDGE is available in some parts of the US, Europe, and Middle East (not sure about Asia). Do not confuse it with UMTS which is a very different technology and is built on different networks and offers even faster speeds.
Here are a few web sites that offer free speed tests:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
well, thank you so much, i got the clear idea now and thanx again for the websites
7ayyaak Allaah Glad I could help !
if i can get my XDA2i to sync with my wirless router at home, will it cost me anything? or will it all go on what i have alread payed for broadband,
i guess what i'm asking is, is this phone basically another device i can surf on in my home via my router like my mac or pc, or is it a seperate device that cost money to use?
Thanks, any help much appreciated
Short answer - it will be treated as any other wireless device that you connect to your wireless network.
Longer answer - You are not connecting to GPRS, so you are not going to be chgarged for that, and as you are going through a router, your ISP will have no idea what you are connecting behind the router, and they would not charge you anything extra anyway.
fantastic, thank you very much, just one more question if anyone can answer it,
could there an obvious reason msn isn't working on my XDA2i, i have got the WLAN connection working fine, but when i try to connect to msn it say something like, network busy please retry or try again later"
my details, name password etc, are correct so i do not understand why this function is not working, unless their has been a ppc msn update in the past 5 months?
Thanks again guys, you have been very helpfull so far
There is an MSN update on PPC2003

Hi to all , i'm a new user of TYTN .
I always use it as a modem to surf the web via BT in conjunction with my laptop.
My question is : there is a way to defaul the wireless modem to BT ( it default to usb ) when start the program and ( maybe ) the program starts automatically without select MENU>START....
ALSO : i saw that the internal modem work also when the device is into sleep mode and without starting the wireless modem but in this case the connection hang after few minutes ( i think the BT connection to the PC hang ).
If the device is in active state the internal modem work too and fine but if no data is exchanged for a while the device goes to sleep without advice then connection hang.
No problem using the wireless modem .
Again ... there is a way to add the internet sharing via PAN BT like hermes' brothers ( P3600) ???
thx in advance
Greeting from Italy
Davide
I'm having the same problem, also in Italy on TIM. I have tried two different SIM cards, different data plans, and can not find any pattern to the disonnects. If the connection sits idle, it will suddenly stop passing traffic. I have at times been able to keep the connection active by running a game (WoW) in the background on my laptop, but as soon as I the game quits due to timeout (not playing), the connection gets "stale" and dies. Other times, the game will not keep the connection active either. The time it stays active is inconsistent as well. Sometimes when I connect, I get no received packets, only sent. If I disconnect/reconnect 4 or 5 times, usually I will get a good connect and be able to open a web page. I do find it is worse in the daytime than in the evenings, but this is not always true.
BTW, I'm on a TyTn, MacBook Pro w/ the modem script linked from the wiki.
Any ideas?
@ jcolley :
i don't know about macbook , but a problem like your appear on micro$oft XP with the built in bluetooth stack .... much more better use the widcomm stack or toshiba stack for bluetooth

Nope, as there still isn't an AKU3 ROM for the TyTN.
As far as disconnection problems are concerned, try using a desktop-based ping utility to keep up the connection.

I have just upgraded to an XDA Trion (Hermes) and I have got TomTom (5.21) working without too much trouble. However, as with my old Wizard my push email GPRS connection is almost always connected and TT Traffic doesn't like it. It wants a 'vanilla' GPRS connection. I could switch this manually on the Wizard (although it was a PITA), but on the Trion, TT just refuses to connect.
Is there anyway of forcing TT to use the vanilla GPRS connection ?
BTW, The GPRS connection takes an age to set up. E.g. in POP3 email, it just sits there for 90 seconds connecting before the data transfer starts.
Confused, Leeds, UK.
Hmmmm
After spending most of the day trying to connect to Tomtom services and emailing them (in vain) I got through to them on the phone <shock>
It was pretty fruitless, but it did make me look at my push email schedule and I set it down a notch to every 5 mins instead of instant, which is kind of defeating the point, but...
Soon as I did that Tomtom Plus connected. I can get traffic on the move. I can get my email in seconds.
A compromise, but at least things are coexisting...for now.
Hope that helps.
I have a tomtom go510, it worked before the att rom update, now it says the phone has no data connection. HELP
Ooer
Sorry I know nothing about TT Go's. Have you posted a new topic in the forum ? I think you'll get more hits that way.
Sorry, Dave.
Dave,
I have exactly the same problem with Tomtom traffic, could you tell me how to change my push settings - or even delete them - as I don't use push email on my tytn, having traffic back would be great.
Paul
The issue on conecting the tomtom go seems to be the removal of DUN on AKU3 bluetooth, there is a cab file which gives you the functionality back as listed eleswhere on this forum (WM6_BT_DUN.cab)
Hello,
I've been searching the whole forum, but I cannot believe nobody is having the same problem (or idea) as I have:
BA is still great, but nowadays it's lack of 3G internet speed capability (no HSDPA or HSUPA, only gprs.. is becoming more and more quite a problem...
So I thought, wait, I'll connect my BA via bluetooth to another cell phone with 3G, HSDPA, etc. capabilities and basically connect to the internet through that phone, and have high speed internet!
However, I can't figure it out.
First I tried through DUN, but it turns out MS removed DUN from wm 6.1, and from what I can see, Internet sharing is not intended for this task. Or is it?
Can we have high speed internet on BA?
Thanks,
pooksee1802
I couldn't get it to work - but I have just got a 3G USB dongle which I hope will (with a connector cable) provide the old BA with 3G access..
I'm hoping I can configure the BA as if it were going through the USB activesync to the PC and so to the internet.
Anyone tried this yet??
hmm,
judging by the thread's view count it seems the issue is interesting, but unfortunately no answers...
c'mon guys, nobody interested in having high speed internet access on our BA's?
thank you!
in theory the scheme is simple but useless
you need laptop, 3g dongle connected to it and then BA connected to the laptop via cable (bluetooth is slow)and activesync, this is the only working way. This scheme is useless because if you carry the laptop why will do you need the BA?
there is no usb host on the BA so you can not connect the 3g usb dongle to it in any way, thats why you need the laptop
I am using BA with phone as Bluetooth modem towards HSPA network.
Actually, the initial purpose was to share one SIM card between phone and BA, which is more or less permanently installed in my car.
So far, the experience is good. I have 2Mbit HSDPA connection from Nokia E71 to my operator. Bluetooth link has a theoretical maximum speed of 1Mbit/s. In reality this is even slower, but way higher than you can get from EDGE Class 10.
The only problem is that THERE IS NO ROMs released lately, which support Bluetooth dialup. That's it.
ROMs I could get to work with phone as Bluetooth modem are WM5 ROMS and WM6 - "BA ROM CE OS 5.2.19199 (Build 19199.1.0.0 PV DVH) 16MB PP (04)" (using it now).
All later builds do not even try to connect to BT DUN on phone and immediately show "Unable to dial *99#" prompt. No idea what they did to cripple BT DUN in WM 6.1 on BA.
the old dialup was dumped in all later ba rom builds but if it is required so much i can add it in a later build of my roms
Well, I would very appreciate it, really.
Stpark - that's exactly what I was trying to do!
Regarding BA's bluetooth speed, I was aware that it's bt is only ver. 1.1, that is quite slow, but I assumed it would nonetheless still be faster than ordinary gprs. Thanks again for the confirmation.
Stpark, by the way, searching for the "missing bluetooth DUN" I came across a WM developers blog, (http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2007/04/17/why-did-we-remove-bluetooth-dun.aspx) who said that actually they didn't remove it from the ROMs completely, they just put it as an option, but due to user's demand they will return it to the standard package in WM 6.5.
Xplode, thank you for all the roms so far, and I would also appreciate very very much a rom with the DUN included, and I think many of us would as well... Thank you...
To be exactly precise on DUN... There is DUN and there is another DUN.
There is model where your BA acts as DUN host (i.e. you dial from PC using your handheld as modem).
And there is model where your BA acts as DUN client (i.e. you dial from BA using you whetever mobile phone as modem).
So far we are talking about second model, whereas Microsoft is dropping DUN for first. It means that BA as modem role is being replaced by BT PAN. I am not aware about Microsoft being dropped DUN client role in Windows Mobile.
It seem to be just an issue with composition of latest BA ROMs.
That's right, we need the "second" option, that is when the BA acts as a client connecting to a host mobile phone with 3g internet connection.
Be it as it may, because I don't know if MS did drop DUN altogether, or just the first, host mode operation, we need the second one. I'd say badly.
Now I'm hoping for a ROM with DUN in it... (xplode..xplode..
ps. I'm writing this on my BA connected to the net through gprs, speed: 5 kb/s, just like dialup, happytime...
Well i am working on 20931 rom and may publish it these days, but i still have some issues with it when i solve them i will publish it
