I put on the settings->lock-> 4 digit password last night and I was able to unlock it several times last night and during the day.
Tonight the phone rang and during the call I was typing the password and now my password does not work. I always use the same password for the device so I'm sure I have the correct one. I keep getting the "password you typed is wrong"
How do I get around it? Is there a way?
I can hard reset if I have to but I have received several text messages while trying to figure this out and if I reset I will loose them all.

Not sure you are going to like this. I had similar experience and discovered there is a password bug in the Microsoft code. It has only bitten me once, but caused me a real problem.
If you still have some tries left, do a soft re-set and wait for a few minutes after the system has booted up. Then I suggest you use the on-screen keyboard, rather than the physical one.
If all else fails, do a hard re-set yourself, rather than allowing the password system to erase your machine, as it will erase EVERYTHING, even the memory card if that is installed
Best of luck

Ok, I have an AT&T 8525 version. It's been upgraded to WM6 using the official patch, and the only other thing I had running on it was SPB shell trial version or something. I set a lock password, where when ever you turned the screen on you had to enter a password to access the device. With the Shell trial thingie it would actually give you the clock first, which was why I was trying it.
Now, my problem is this. I'm an idiot and my phone got dunked in water. I took it apart, well, took the battery out, SIM card, etc, anything I could get out without dismantling the whole phone. Took compressed air and blew on it until my can froze up and I had to surgerically remove my fingers from the can o' air (ok, exaggeration there). Anyways, if I call the phone, it rings and does what it needs to. The problem is that I can't unlock the stupid phone now. I'm not forgetting the number, it just won't accept it. I'm up to 8 mins of wait time before I can reenter it as well.
So, my question, is there a way to break the lock code without destroying the data on the phone? If no, how do I reset the phone completely? Do I have to do a hard reset? Can I take it to AT&T to get them to reset it?
And one big question, does the reset go past WM6 and revert to WM5?
Thanks all.
anything, anyone?
Just having the same problem myself.
Didn't dunk in water, but found wi-fi was locking up so did a soft reset with the sylus in the reset hole and when it rebooted, it would not accept the password.
Apperently, this is a common fault with WM6 where if you reset (or lose power whilst settings are in cache memory) the phone 'forgets' your password.
Maybe this is what has happened to yours - the only way round it is a hard reset.
Must be a "feature" not a bug.
*sigh*
Makes me pretty hesitant on ever using the feature again. I'm having serious issues trying to get it back to Syncing w/ my desktop and letting me access the device as a folder. Right now it's just powering up but nothing else.

Hard reset worked for me. Only issue now is I can't get it to allow me to explore the device any more. It'll sync emails, etc, but won't let me access the device while connected to the USB.
The WM6 I used was the official version, not sure if that's a difference.
Hello,
Wondering if someone can help me, i have a very strange problem indeed!
I've just rest my device and when it came up with the Unlock screen to type in my unlock code (4 digits) I can press the buttons on the screen, and the code is typed in, but when I come to press any of the unlock buttons, they do the physical depress animation but it's as though they are not registering the click event.
This is on Mirri WM6.5 rom.
Any help would be appreciated, I also tried to use MyMobiler to use my mouse to try and do it, but as I last used it as Mass Storage, it won't connect as I can't get to set it as ActiveSync.
*Edit - Further update, if I dial 999, I can correctly press the cancel button, which means it's not that portion of the screen which is obscured, it's just the unlock, contacts, mail buttons that are failing to unlock the device. I receive no error messages when typing incorrect codes either.
Could it be possible a program has changed my password?
Thanks in advance folks.
D.
** HARD RESET DEVICE **
Too business critical to keep messing about, please leave comments if you have any ideas incase this happens in future.
I severely doubt your password has been changed. If you are unable to press unlock, it may be worthwhile performing a hard reset to see if this fixes your problem. Obviously backup contacts, emails etc beforehand as you should still be able to do this.
Hi,
I was unable to do anything with the device, so had to hard reset.
As the device was locked upon startup, the only thing i got was the enter device unlock code screen.
I know the changed password is a strange idea, but can't think of anything else unless my device is actually knackered... just finished hard reset now.

Any joy after hard reset?
All seems to be working perfectly now, have lost a few days of txts since my last backup, but otherwise all up and running... very strange indeed!!
Thanks for checking back
Hi
i have my HD2 (UK, 1.43) for about a week now and have a 4 digits numeric password for my screen lock.
Today, for the second time my password was not accepted ("The password you typed was incorrect") after waking up from standby. The same happend a few days ago. A soft reset (red button) fixed the problem. I've made no modifications or any tweaks/hacks on my device.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've tried several times and I'm perfectly sure the password was correct.
Update: three times 'till now...
HTC support suggested to do a hard reset.

I'm glad I'm not the only one this is happening to and I'm not going crazy.
This exactly same thing has happened to me this morning, and yesterday morning. Upon taking the phone off charging and then using the phone first thing in the morning to check overnight emails, the 4 digit passcode was not accepted.
Yesterday I could eventually get the a1b2c3 entered and then enter my password and it was fine.
Today I could not enter the a1b2c3 reliably and this is what was happening:
- After 3 seconds of the screen being on as I was trying to enter the password, the screen would turn off.
- Turning the screen back on by pressing Hang-Up button I'd try and enter the a1b2c3 quickly.
- The Phone Keypad keyboard was only entering Numbers no matter what. I had to get the a1b2c3 entered by holding each key, and then sliding across to the letter (as keypad was only entering numbers).
- On the 4th time of this not working I was warned by the Phone that upon the next incorrect password entry the phone would be wiped.
So I ripped the battery and the Memory card out, and left the phone off for 30mins while I had a shower and got ready etc.
Upon restarting the phone I could enter the password fine and use the phone normally.
Now I don't think this is a problem just with the HD2, as I've had similar experiences with my Cruise, Diamond, and Diamond 2...
I had this happen to me once. One soft reset fixed it.

It's an intermittent problem. As in, on all of my previous 3 HTC phones, it might have happened once per month for no apparent reason. Then the problem may not have appeared for another month or so...
Same issue here. Twice in as many days. I've only had the device for 2 weeks and I've had this 5-6 times. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to pull the thing apart to get to the reset button, and then either try and find a pen or pull the battery out.
I've had this problem when the exchange policy mandated that code. The only way to make it dissapear was to hardreset the device. But after a few days the problem reapeared, hardreset. Later it reapeared again, so i disabled the security policy. Now this problem does not happen anymore, but sometimes i can't get past the lock screen: nothing happens....and i have to reset the device.....
@foske
thanks for your replay. At least I now know that hard resetting won't help.
I have exchange policies too, and for security reasons I'm not going to disable the lock screen password.
I've sent a message to HTC support, I'll keep you informed...
@chiron83, have you heard anything from HTC? And does anyone know if this is fixed in the 1.48 firmware?

I've upgraded to 1.48 and have just started using the lock password feature. I've just encountered this issue with the password being incorrect. So yes the problem still exists in ROM 1.48.
The problem I have now is the phone won't even recognize the UNLOCK button, there's no reponse, not even "Password Incorrect". I've tried several soft resets, battery removals, SIM and memory card removal, the works. I can't unlock my phone and I'm going to lose all my data I've input today if I hard reset.
Anyone got any last bright ideas?
HTC advised me to update to 1.48
Haven't had the wrong password problem until now, but therefore the freeze Problem every morning
Well I never managed to get around the password issue, so I had to HARD RESET my phone and spent half a day restoring everything and re-keying the data I lost from that day. Not impressed. The Lock Password is now very much turned OFF!
Incidentally, I restored my data from MyPhone, then when I got home and synched with Outlook, ALL MY DATA GOT DUPLICATED! So I had to spend ages deleting all the duplicate calendar entries, contacts, tasks etc. I have 900 contacts so as you can imagine that took a while.
I'm kinda pissed off.

Wish that was an option for me, but it is enforced by the Exchange server policy
This happened to me once on my old blue angel, in the worst possible way (Soft reset didn't help me). The phone only knew it had to ask for a password but had totally forgotten what the password was. I then heard it's a problem with winmo. I had to hard reset and lose everything just because I had a password...
Never used the password again after that incident...
From what I can see this is a general Windows Mobile problem using Group Policy and corporate Outlook etc. As I've said previously this has happened across 4 different WinMo phones.
One thing I did on my Diamond2 to get around it was use Zenyee StayUnlock which would override the Group Policy password enforcement. I then installed ThrottleLock which ensured that my phone was still 'password' protected and secure.
However StayUnlock does not work on WinMo 6.5 as I've tried this with my HD2 and the Group Policy password was still active...
I have the same issue and I I guess I am a bit relieved that others do (especially those reported without tweaks). Thanks! . Im suprised that there are so few of us though. I also have the sms fault, and there is a flood of anger and uproar about that. It really pisses me off that you spend this kind of dough on whats arguably one of the best handsets yet and have to put up with this kind of rudimentary crap!
Anway, Anyone tried any other roms besides the two mentioned?
Damn you, HTC!
Wrong password again, and the "wake up from standby freeze" too with 1.48
With my Touch Diamond I never had any password issues.
I thought that it's just my phone doing it, as I got it on the 20th of November and couldn't find anyone mentioning the same issue!
The first HD2 I got had a very, very sensitive screen, and had this lock screen issue, so I had it replaced. The second one is better with regards to screen sensitivity, but I still had the screen lock issue a few times. And the first time the phone performed a hard reset (due to "forgetting" the password) it deleted everything on my micro SD card and somehow "unformat"-ed it as well. The card wasn't recognised by any of my phones after that, so I had to reformat it. After this incident I always remembered to take the card out before the phone gets hard reset.
For me, I think the screen lock problem only happened when I used a certain PC-based registry editor, or a slightly older version of Sprite Backup (the one that came with the phone wasn't compatible with WM 6.5), or when I disabled the Autolock feature (but still had the Exchange group policy enforced). I stopped doinig all those three things and (touch wood!) it seems fine now.
I haven't installed any tweaking, system manipulation or backup software. In fact, I only installed one single programm, audible player.
I flashed my HD2 again today, if the problem resists I'll have to exchange it. I'm not willing to open the metal cover and soft-reset my device every day.

And you shouldn't rightfully be even if the reset switch was much easier to reach...
Im sure everybody has run into this problem on other android devices but i haven't seen this problem with many x10 owners. It must've unlocked itself and flapped around in my pocket until it incorrectly drew a pattern 5 or more times and somehow pressed the "Forgot Pattern?" button.
So your stuck with a screen that asks for your Gmail account login and ive tried every single combination of correct username and pass to get in but it is impossible ( Account logs in fine on PC ).
Ive read about ways to solve this and have come upon 3 different options.
1. Manual Factory Reset ( It's an option but i don't want to spend hours getting my phone back to how it was )
2. While in a call, ending the call and using a short window of opportunity (.5 seconds) to tinker around with your settings to try and make it possible to access your phone.
3. Download the Android SDK and enter something into the command prompt.
I would like to try option 3 however i heard that your phone must be rooted, i don't know how to go about rooting or if it is even possible for the x10.
Any support appreciated, thanks.
i guess don't use pattern lock is my suggestion. is there something else that can be used instead of pattern lock?

Might sound like a silly suggestion... but have you tried powering off. taking the battery and sim card out.. give it 30 seconds or so then put it all back together again.. might let you try your google account details then..
Did same, had to seus to get back in Lucky was 1st day owning so not bothered.
You mention the call thing, can you not disable the pattern lock whilst in call ?. I didnt know the phone could take a call when locked out so didnt try.
I have SPB Mobile Shell installed, and have never had any big issues until yday. For some reason it did not want to unlock when I entered the unlock code. I am absolutely sure I entered the right code, but it said it was wrong (I am not talking about the pin, but the code for locking the keypad). I tried to do a soft reset, but I am not even able to get to the pin-code screen login, as I have to unlock the device before this. In the beginning it said the password I entered was wrong, but now nothing even happens when I press the unlock button after entering the password.
Any ideas, or do I really have to do the hard reset??
If I am correct you have to slide to unlock and then enter your 4 digit number to access the phone.
I had this issue a few weeks ago and tried every method to unlock it. The symptoms that you are describing are exactly what I had. I know that I was entering the right number but the message that came up was 'wrong pincode'.
I contacted HTC and they couldn't help me and suggested that I do a hard reset. I reluctantly had to do this and it was reset to factory settings. JUST BACK UP YOUR STUFF. All my footprints were lost. Good luck !!
Yes, thats the exact same problem as I have. Guess hard reset is the only way out.. =/ I do have all the contacts backed up in Outlook, and as far as I know the memorycard will not be deleted, so all photos etc will hopefully not be lost. But anyway quite annoying.. =/
