Hi
i have my HD2 (UK, 1.43) for about a week now and have a 4 digits numeric password for my screen lock.
Today, for the second time my password was not accepted ("The password you typed was incorrect") after waking up from standby. The same happend a few days ago. A soft reset (red button) fixed the problem. I've made no modifications or any tweaks/hacks on my device.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've tried several times and I'm perfectly sure the password was correct.
Update: three times 'till now...
HTC support suggested to do a hard reset.

I'm glad I'm not the only one this is happening to and I'm not going crazy.
This exactly same thing has happened to me this morning, and yesterday morning. Upon taking the phone off charging and then using the phone first thing in the morning to check overnight emails, the 4 digit passcode was not accepted.
Yesterday I could eventually get the a1b2c3 entered and then enter my password and it was fine.
Today I could not enter the a1b2c3 reliably and this is what was happening:
- After 3 seconds of the screen being on as I was trying to enter the password, the screen would turn off.
- Turning the screen back on by pressing Hang-Up button I'd try and enter the a1b2c3 quickly.
- The Phone Keypad keyboard was only entering Numbers no matter what. I had to get the a1b2c3 entered by holding each key, and then sliding across to the letter (as keypad was only entering numbers).
- On the 4th time of this not working I was warned by the Phone that upon the next incorrect password entry the phone would be wiped.
So I ripped the battery and the Memory card out, and left the phone off for 30mins while I had a shower and got ready etc.
Upon restarting the phone I could enter the password fine and use the phone normally.
Now I don't think this is a problem just with the HD2, as I've had similar experiences with my Cruise, Diamond, and Diamond 2...
I had this happen to me once. One soft reset fixed it.

It's an intermittent problem. As in, on all of my previous 3 HTC phones, it might have happened once per month for no apparent reason. Then the problem may not have appeared for another month or so...
Same issue here. Twice in as many days. I've only had the device for 2 weeks and I've had this 5-6 times. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to pull the thing apart to get to the reset button, and then either try and find a pen or pull the battery out.
I've had this problem when the exchange policy mandated that code. The only way to make it dissapear was to hardreset the device. But after a few days the problem reapeared, hardreset. Later it reapeared again, so i disabled the security policy. Now this problem does not happen anymore, but sometimes i can't get past the lock screen: nothing happens....and i have to reset the device.....
@foske
thanks for your replay. At least I now know that hard resetting won't help.
I have exchange policies too, and for security reasons I'm not going to disable the lock screen password.
I've sent a message to HTC support, I'll keep you informed...
@chiron83, have you heard anything from HTC? And does anyone know if this is fixed in the 1.48 firmware?

I've upgraded to 1.48 and have just started using the lock password feature. I've just encountered this issue with the password being incorrect. So yes the problem still exists in ROM 1.48.
The problem I have now is the phone won't even recognize the UNLOCK button, there's no reponse, not even "Password Incorrect". I've tried several soft resets, battery removals, SIM and memory card removal, the works. I can't unlock my phone and I'm going to lose all my data I've input today if I hard reset.
Anyone got any last bright ideas?
HTC advised me to update to 1.48
Haven't had the wrong password problem until now, but therefore the freeze Problem every morning
Well I never managed to get around the password issue, so I had to HARD RESET my phone and spent half a day restoring everything and re-keying the data I lost from that day. Not impressed. The Lock Password is now very much turned OFF!
Incidentally, I restored my data from MyPhone, then when I got home and synched with Outlook, ALL MY DATA GOT DUPLICATED! So I had to spend ages deleting all the duplicate calendar entries, contacts, tasks etc. I have 900 contacts so as you can imagine that took a while.
I'm kinda pissed off.

Wish that was an option for me, but it is enforced by the Exchange server policy
This happened to me once on my old blue angel, in the worst possible way (Soft reset didn't help me). The phone only knew it had to ask for a password but had totally forgotten what the password was. I then heard it's a problem with winmo. I had to hard reset and lose everything just because I had a password...
Never used the password again after that incident...
From what I can see this is a general Windows Mobile problem using Group Policy and corporate Outlook etc. As I've said previously this has happened across 4 different WinMo phones.
One thing I did on my Diamond2 to get around it was use Zenyee StayUnlock which would override the Group Policy password enforcement. I then installed ThrottleLock which ensured that my phone was still 'password' protected and secure.
However StayUnlock does not work on WinMo 6.5 as I've tried this with my HD2 and the Group Policy password was still active...
I have the same issue and I I guess I am a bit relieved that others do (especially those reported without tweaks). Thanks! . Im suprised that there are so few of us though. I also have the sms fault, and there is a flood of anger and uproar about that. It really pisses me off that you spend this kind of dough on whats arguably one of the best handsets yet and have to put up with this kind of rudimentary crap!
Anway, Anyone tried any other roms besides the two mentioned?
Damn you, HTC!
Wrong password again, and the "wake up from standby freeze" too with 1.48
With my Touch Diamond I never had any password issues.
I thought that it's just my phone doing it, as I got it on the 20th of November and couldn't find anyone mentioning the same issue!
The first HD2 I got had a very, very sensitive screen, and had this lock screen issue, so I had it replaced. The second one is better with regards to screen sensitivity, but I still had the screen lock issue a few times. And the first time the phone performed a hard reset (due to "forgetting" the password) it deleted everything on my micro SD card and somehow "unformat"-ed it as well. The card wasn't recognised by any of my phones after that, so I had to reformat it. After this incident I always remembered to take the card out before the phone gets hard reset.
For me, I think the screen lock problem only happened when I used a certain PC-based registry editor, or a slightly older version of Sprite Backup (the one that came with the phone wasn't compatible with WM 6.5), or when I disabled the Autolock feature (but still had the Exchange group policy enforced). I stopped doinig all those three things and (touch wood!) it seems fine now.
I haven't installed any tweaking, system manipulation or backup software. In fact, I only installed one single programm, audible player.
I flashed my HD2 again today, if the problem resists I'll have to exchange it. I'm not willing to open the metal cover and soft-reset my device every day.

After coming back from real VGA, my x7500 does not want to accept my unlock code anymore. The one cached in Activesync does not work anymore either, becuase activesync now also asks for an unlock code again.
This effectively has shut me out of my X7500, and my only option now is a hard reset.
Has anyone else ever had this experience?

I experienced a similar issue. I was working with the devie and had to soft reset a few times. The last tme I got locked out of my device. My password would no longer work and i was forced to hard reset. Needless to say, I don't have a password on my device now. Was a very annoying issue. Im running WM6 withthe x7500, not CID unlocked.

Well, of course I keep daily (Sprite) backups, so no real harm done. But it was a bit of a surprise nevertheless. It indicates that the database that keeps the unlockcodes apparently continuously is in an open state or else a soft reset would not have corrupted it.
Errr I now have definite proof that there's something wrong with either the WM6 upgrade specifically or with the Power shutdown routine in general.
I just performed a hard reset, did not bother to configure anything except for the power on password/pin. After the shutdown and reboot, the pin is corrupted and entry into the machine is prohibited.
What's more, when I cleared my password on a fully configured machine and performed that same shutdown, after the reboot my mail password was gone and even my TomTom activation was gone ....... somehow something gets seriously corrupted after a shutdown.
There is definitely something wrong here. Could someone try this on a factory default WM5 machine, or even on a freshly installed WM6 machine to see where this issue comes from?

Do you experience the problem if true VGA is not used?
Ok, I have an AT&T 8525 version. It's been upgraded to WM6 using the official patch, and the only other thing I had running on it was SPB shell trial version or something. I set a lock password, where when ever you turned the screen on you had to enter a password to access the device. With the Shell trial thingie it would actually give you the clock first, which was why I was trying it.
Now, my problem is this. I'm an idiot and my phone got dunked in water. I took it apart, well, took the battery out, SIM card, etc, anything I could get out without dismantling the whole phone. Took compressed air and blew on it until my can froze up and I had to surgerically remove my fingers from the can o' air (ok, exaggeration there). Anyways, if I call the phone, it rings and does what it needs to. The problem is that I can't unlock the stupid phone now. I'm not forgetting the number, it just won't accept it. I'm up to 8 mins of wait time before I can reenter it as well.
So, my question, is there a way to break the lock code without destroying the data on the phone? If no, how do I reset the phone completely? Do I have to do a hard reset? Can I take it to AT&T to get them to reset it?
And one big question, does the reset go past WM6 and revert to WM5?
Thanks all.
anything, anyone?
Just having the same problem myself.
Didn't dunk in water, but found wi-fi was locking up so did a soft reset with the sylus in the reset hole and when it rebooted, it would not accept the password.
Apperently, this is a common fault with WM6 where if you reset (or lose power whilst settings are in cache memory) the phone 'forgets' your password.
Maybe this is what has happened to yours - the only way round it is a hard reset.
Must be a "feature" not a bug.
*sigh*
Makes me pretty hesitant on ever using the feature again. I'm having serious issues trying to get it back to Syncing w/ my desktop and letting me access the device as a folder. Right now it's just powering up but nothing else.
How to reset the password
Ive just updated my rom to wm6 2days ago. Now im having the same problem...my device was set to auto off after 3min then when turned on... password prompt...i know the password...but was not accepted. Tried to re-flash wm6 but nothing happened. Anyone plsss help!!!! Thank you very much in advance!

Hard reset worked for me. Only issue now is I can't get it to allow me to explore the device any more. It'll sync emails, etc, but won't let me access the device while connected to the USB.
The WM6 I used was the official version, not sure if that's a difference.
This is weird. My company requires that I have a password on my device. So be it. I want to say that when I upgraded to WM6.1 this issue started, but it might have been there before. Not sure. Anyway, here is the scenario:
1) Phone coming back from a soft-reset/battery removal/etc. Doesn't
matter, as it always does this.
2) The outline of the Password screen pops up, I press top left of outlined
area.
3) Enter password the second that the numbers show up and press unlock.
4) If I don't do it fast enough, the device locks up - HARD!
5) To come back from this, I have to do a soft-reset and perform 2 & 3
fast. If I do, the device works fine. In fact, subsequent password
entries will work fine. Only the very first one after a reboot.
Any ideas on this? I did a little searching and didn't find anything specific to this issue. But then again, my searching sometimes isn't perfect! :-D
Thanks in advance! Cheers...
I've seen something like this, though not as bad.
Try turning off absolutely everything on the Today screen to see if that helps.
When I saw it, I think a program was firing up in the background while the password screen was displayed.

Do you possibly have some other type of startup program running in the background? I had something similar (can't recall now exactly what it was) when I was using a Wizard a couple of years ago. It was like the lock interface kept losing the "focus" after a few seconds. Ultimately I hard reset and started from scratch, but the issue never resurfaced.
In the end I chose to stop the policy enforcement from my company's Exchange server altogether. Not necessarily recommending you do the same, as it's surely frowned upon by all pointy haired bosses in IT. But in the event you'd like to experience the Dark Side of the Force... here ya go.
I have been having some problems with my leo where i cannot unlock it after coming out of standby. The screen just freezes.
And sometimes when i press the END button to get it out of standby, the key lights come on, but nothing else happens.
Apparently others have this issue too! - check out u-tube video:

Has anyone else had this or still having this? Do i have to return my phone for another one?
Have you tried a hard reset?

Haven't had the issue. Vaguely read about this somewhere else, might be related to the default WM 6.5 lockscreen. Disable it and try something like S2U2 and see if u still have the same issue.
I have same problem with my device. Is this software or hardware problem? I have to do hard reset, and after that display can be stack. So I have to do soft reset, and phone working. It happens to me 2 times in one day, both times after I have been in room with very bad signal. Maybe that can produce problem. Symptoms are same as on YouTube video.
Does anybody know how to solve this?
i face this b4, it happend few times a day. but after i do hard reset the problem is solved. i think should be installed something conflict with the phone or inproper amended some registry
i used to have this but now it is less common after I have installed WMTask to Close applications when I hit "X" (instead of WM just minimizing the app). In effect it frees up memory and hopefully does cause your HD to struggle for memory when waking up?
guys,
for your info, I installed a new ROM and this didnt help. So it is NOT a SOFTWARE issue. I returned my phone for a new replacement unit and no more issues.
Sorry to say but if u have this problem u need to send your phone back.
I now have no more issues!
Mine has been doing this a lot. Turning it back on just results in the keys lighting up and nothing more.
Work around is to turn on so keys light up, hold down power key until lights all go off, then press power key again ... it will come back to the lock screen.
Thanks for your prompt answer.
It is not seems as memory problem, because if I remove and return battery problem stay. Maybe it can be problem with display driver. Also it is a little strange that after hard reset, I have to do soft reset to get it work again. I not like to change rom version, because it can void my guaranty, and maybe it is hardware problem.
Mine does exactly the same thing once it gets warm. Decided to return it after trying multiple hard resets. ROM changes and S2U2. Made no difference.
As I've joked on this forum before (although it's true), I had to put mine in the freezer to get the screen to work again so it sounds to me like a hardware issue.
Mine's going back for a replacement next week...

Well thanks for the solution so if we get that bug , just put your brand new HTC HD2 on the freeser lol
I had similar problem four mornings in a row. Hardware keys would light up but screen dead. Soft reset got it going again, and a hard reset made no difference, even without reinstalling my softwares (I had a clock alarm set for each morning, maybe this is just coincidence). Someone on another forum with a similar issue suggested installing MemMaid, and for me this has worked. Running a regular 'clean' has meant that the problem has not returned, for three days now. So far! I notice that every clean finds many duplicate or invalid 'notifications', not sure if these somehow accumulate and cause the device to crash? Maybe worth trying? So problem for me at least is software related. HTC need to sort this as it is really annoying, and MemMaid is only free as a trial.

I am not quite sure that is software problem, if you done hard reset, and display still not respond on touch.
Soft or hard reset could clear the problem, I just mean that a hard reset didn't avoid the problem coming back. My current ROM is the official 1.48, didn't have this issue on the previous official ROM.
I got confirmation from service today, that it is hardware issue with phone display.

How do you know if youre phone should be replaced? Does it happen every time?
This happens to me every so often.
ya, I'm experiencing this as well. real drag!
The same thing happened to me aswell.
I recieved a message and when I tried to unlock the screen, nothing happened. The hardware keys worked but the screen didn't register my touches.
Tried soft reset, didn't work. Removed battery for a while, didn't work. Hard reset, didn't work. Flashed official ROM from HTC, didn't work.
It's been sent for repair. Hope I get it back quickly
I actually don't. But I insist to get phone replaced. I wrote appeal to company where I buy phone. Also I wrote down S/N and IME so I can check if I get new one.
Got the exact same problem, have been complaining about this in different topic here.
Sometimes couldn't unlock screen for many hours... then suddenly works again.
I've tried everything : decreasing/inscreasing screen sensitivity with reg, removing the screen lock, stopping the weather animation as suggested, putting a second finger in a corner while touching the screen : NOTHING WORKS
The only thing i'm convinced : it IS a hardware problem.
When the screen didn't react at all for some hours, sometimes playing with its humidity could help for a few minutes only ( by cleaning the screen with some special wet lcd cleaner or cleaning the screen with some humidity from my breath).
Also i'm travelling a lot (several countries a week)... and noticed THE PROBLEM APPEARS IN COUNTRY WHERE HUMIDITY IS HIGH. (that's also the reason why freezer could help. in a freezer, it's so cold, that the humidity is not in the air anymore, but is in ice state).
MAYBE SOME GOOD NEWS:
I recently bought the HTC screen protection for the HD2 (5 days ago).
Thanks to it, Air humidity doesn't touch the screen directly anymore.
And the problem hasn't appeared, not even once!
I just arrived a few hours ago in the country where i always had the problem (cause of its high humidity), and guess what ? Screen is still working great
I'll keep u up to date if problems come back.... but for now, i really think this is the solution (with logical explanation).
Kaemon.
Hello,
I recently configured ActiveSync E-Mail on my HTC HD mini. Everything works fine until I power off and power on the device. The startup sequence is paused with the following text:
"Company policy has enabled device encryption. Startup is suspended. Select unlock to continue. Emergency calls: Press talk."
When I select Unlock then nothing happens (the button is pressed).
The device cannot be turned off by power off button (it only goes to sleep).
The problem is not solved by removing the battery, putting it back and powering on.
The only way to get the device working is to hard reset the device by the special sequence of keys.
Device: HTC HD mini
ROM: RUU_Photon_HTC_WWE_EastEurope_1.36.479.1_Radio_Signed_32.2803.05.06_0.63.05.36_Ship.exe
I reproduced this problem 3 times.
I downgraded from RUU_Photon_HTC_WWE_EastEurope_1.36.479.1_Radio_Signed_32.2803.05.06_0.63.05.36_Ship.exe to RUU_Photon_HTC_WWE_EastEurope_1.32.479.2_Radio_Signed_32.2802.05.06_0.63.05.35_Ship.exe which seemed to remove the problem. However, it appeared after several power cycles also on 1.32.
Any idea how to correct this?
I had exactly the same problem when I purchased the HD minn a few months ago. It happened 3 times in a row that I had to hard-reset and re-install for exactly the same reason (no unlock keys after start-up.) I called my corporate's IT department. They said they changed something on my MS exchange policy profile that may help. Frankly, I can't believe that this was the real root cause of the issue but ever since then it works fine. Never had this problem again for 4 months.
Sorry that I don't have a real solution for you.
CM
Thank you for you reply. May I have additional questions?
1. What ROM release do you have on your HD mini? As you had the problem a few months ago it might be 1.32, right? I have the problem on ROM 1.36 when I first time power cycled the HD mini. It survived many power cycles on ROM 1.32 until the last one which caused the problem again.
2. Is there any chance asking your corp. IT dept. about the change they did?
==
edit:
It seems that the responsible one is HTC Sense. I upgraded from ROM 1.32 to 1.36. I decided to test this with HTC Sense turned off. The problem is no longer present on 1.36 when HTC Sense is off. However, it is a workaround only. I informed HTC support and I hope they will fix it.
Same problem as the others, only I found the cause!
Everything works fine on mine (1.36) until I change the lock screen wallpaper. As soon as I change that the device hangs on the unlock screen at start-up.
If you look at the way it all works, on start-up when you are prompted to unlock, you get the standard unlock screen with the slide down option, and a background picture. I'm guessing the default picture is held in un-encrypted memory, and so it works. If you change the picture, the new picture is held in encrypted space and can't be accessed until you add your key. Only you can't because the device has crashed.
One work around may be to assign it a background picture from the SD card. But having only just got the thing to work I don't feel like trying it in case it puts me back to square one.
Update: Yes copy the image you want to SD card and then change the lock screen wallpaper to point at that. Device boots normally with the new wallpaper.
Hopefully this will help someone.
radar: Thank you for your input. The explanation sounds reasonable. I'll test it once I need to reinstall the device. I'll stick with the working status I have for now.
I am in the middle of waiting for my hard reset to complete as I type. I just had the same exact issues as you all described. I wanted to add though that the background I was using when this happened was from my storage card so I dont know if that will fix anything.
Ill try to add anything else I find out. I am going to try this one more time and then forget about my work email if the same thing happens. Or I might try to find a new rom - but I like what I have
Edit: I actually just saw that you (radar) said the image on the card worked... weird. I'm goign to try again. If I could get around this everything will be working perfectly and I'm not ready to give up.
Try disabling HTC sense. It helped me.; I am running months (done several power cycles) without the problem.
