Wifi Connected But Email Won't Download - Networking

I have an HTC Wizard with a WM6 ROM installed (jaguar 4.0). The ROM has been good so far and stable, but the last two days I ran into an issue.
I can easily connect to wireless networks around me with wifi. However, when I go to check my email it says 'connecting' and a message eventually pops up says error syncing, check connection or email settings.
The email settings are correct, because when I disable wifi, it connects using GPRS and downloads email no problem. However, it is also connected to wifi, shows the connection, strong signal, and internet explorer also works with wifi. Updating the weather works as well - it just seems to be email.
Any ideas on what the issue is? Thanks in advance.

WiFi and GPRS frustration

I have a belkin router. It works well with several laptops.
I can connect to it with my JASJAR and get an IP address.
If I sync pop3 email it uses WIFI and works as expected.
If I sync journal bar it uses WIFI and works as expected.
However if I try to use internet explorer it alway tries to start a GPRS session and refuses to work through WIFI. Why??
Ive sent hours trying every setting I can find.
Anyone have any suggestions? :?:
Jon
At least your Wifi network doesn't crash as soon as u connect the JJ. Mine doesn't even get that far...
Anyone who can help???
Hmmm I wonder if this is something in the Telstra settings Cab.
Re those having problems all on Telstra?
Might try a hard re set and then manually build the settings.
Jon
Try de activating the phone. this allows you to use IE via your wireless router.
Tried that, thanks.
I just get the "Cannot Connect" message and if I dismiss it. Nothing!
However I can sync the weather without getting the "Cannot Connect" box. SO the WiFi is working, its just that Explorer can see it.
Im running the O2 UK firmware and it works fine (auto gives prefernce to the WiFi if I am in range, try loading on the genuine Imate firmware.
Jon
I know how you feel. I can't get wifi to work. Heck, I can't even use IE when synced to the computer via USB
Have you tried messing with the settings in start/settings/connections/connections?
I finally got it working.
You have to chose the "Telstra Internet" setting in Network Managment.
Its in Settings, Connections, Advanced, Select Networks, select "Telstra Internet".
I then did, Settings, Connections, Manage existing connections, Modem, and set it to "Auto"
It uses the WiFi first and then only uses GPRS if there is no WiFi.
Hope this helps someone else !
Jon
Can anyone help me with just getting my JJ connected to the wifi network without crashing the router?
Have you tried turning off any encryption etc and re booting the router.
Then try to connect at the most basic level?
Now I'm totally confused
I don't know what is going on!
I have finally managed to use IE via Activesync, using "Telstra Internet" as my My network connects to...
I tried again to hook up to the wifi network. The router is connected to my desktop via a physical cable, and my tablet pC is connected wirelessly (my JJ syncs with the tablet). I turned to tablet off, and then connected the JJ to the desktop wirelessly. On the desktop, I am no longer able to connect to the internet, but for some reason, the JJ is able to connect to the internet
But, even if I disconnect the JJ from the network, my desktop is unable to connect back to the internet until I reboot the router. What does this all mean????
I have the same issue with my MDA Pro! i done even have the sutp option in the modem settings. I can connect to my belkin router with encryption but no response when in IE!
Anyone else got any other suggestions?
I'm beginning to think that nobody has a solution to such connection problems. Is there any hope on the horizon? Any chance of something being sorted out by MS?
BTW, how well does BT syncing/internet connection work?
Ok frustration rising.
I can connect to my Belkin wireless router with no problems but I can only log onto the router and not browse the internet!
I have checked that the proxy is not configured.
Anyone got any ideas?
Nope

WiFI how to make it

Please don't kill me but I want to know
HOW to make use WiFi instead of network on browsers and mail, once I connect?
once you connect you to a wifi network it should be just like using wifi on your computer.
a more specific question or example may allow someone to help you more.
The phone uses Wifi where possible by default. However as my push mail is running over the Vodafone Internet APN I have found some occasions where my browsing session wasn't using Wifi.
So I created my own homepage which tells me the IP address I'm on and works out if it's my wifi router or the Vodafone Internet. It also has all my bookmarks, which is a better than the built in solution from Opera.
If you aren't using the GPRS all day, try NoData which can block all GPRS usage.

Aha, the old friend from MySymbian
Well I'll try that NoData but good to hear X1 wants to use it by default (when connected). I don't use any push messages.
It's a Vodafone ROM thing. if you flash to another ROM it will work fine.
WiFi problem
No man, I have a Vodafone UK Xperia. problem with Wifi initially, then I've ROM it to the generic UK version...now it connects to Wifi but I cannot browse anything with it. The pages don't load and status keeps saying 'loading...' but nothing happens and after a min or so, a message saying that I have to check my internet connection...not connected!

Then you have your Wifi settings incorrect.
How come u say my Wifi settings are incorrect? How can I correct it? In wat way? my laptop etc connects to the Wifi fine...and the phone as well...but it just that the phone doesnt seem to load anything from internet when I'm connected.
First Check if you used the correct Key for your wifi if thats fine then ....
I've never had this problem with the xperia but I have had with other windows mobile phones it was probable because of older versions of windows mobile, if wifi is connected fine go to Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks, then select My Network for both drop downs.

Because you are unable to surf the internet, which points to either the settings entered incorrectly (normally when using WEP) or your router needs a firmware upgrade.
Ok here's a complete answer to my question
HOW to make X1 to connect to WiFi ONLY:
Install NoData (thanks for tip!!!)
Turn this on to NOT transfer any network data.
All the browsers I tried (Opera Mini 4.2, Opera Mobile 9.5)
automatically connect by WiFi, so it's great.
Email NOT. But it's enough to
go to email account settings and in advanced server settings instead of your providers network
choose "The Internet".
Violaa, the email account also connects through WiFi.
Hope that helps somebody
Where do i get no data please
There's one topic here called no data cab file!!
Just find it and it's there!
i got problems with my fritzbox 7270, too.
but i solved it.
just set the 802 adaptor manual to your wifi settings.
free ip adress in your segment, gateway, nameserver.
i think its a dhcp problem, with my 7270.

hotmail connected via cellar not wifi

Hi there,
I have a question about an annoying problem that I've only managed to find one (unanswered) question to on the web.
I am currently using WM6.1 and I use to read email from my Hotmail account, amongst other things. The problem is that the messaging client ALWAYS tries to download my mail via 3G/GPRS even when there's a WiFi connection available. This occurs both when I initiate the send/receive using TouchFlo 3D or from within the mail client.
Connection manager is, as far as I'm aware, configured correctly, and PIE/Opera/weather will all happily use WiFi to connect to the internet, only using my data connection when WiFi isn't available.
The same results occur with connection manager configured in either of the following ways:
Internet Connection = "My ISP" settings with 3G modem connection
Work Connection = Default "My Work Network" settings
WiFi Access Point = Connects to Internet
Network Card = Connects to Internet
OR
Internet Connection = "My Work Network" with 3G modem connection and "This network connects to the internet" enabled
Work Connection = As Internet Connection
WiFi Access Point = Connects to Work
Network Card = Connects to Work
Interestingly, if I disable my data connection and enable WiFi I CAN send/receive mail over the WiFi connection, so it seems like the data connection is being used in preference to the WiFi one.
Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?!
Thanks,
Mike
Known issue and it is a pain as I don't have any mobile coverage in the house but I do have a wifi network but can't sync hotmail through Wifi
Same frustrating issue here. Hate it.
Even tried the modaco nodata hack so that windows live didn't even know that I had data, and with wifi going great it just says there is no connection. Pretty retarded.
yes mines too there should be away to change this Setting.
This is a real pain for sure. But I have experienced that if I turn off the phone copletely and then connect to the internet via WiFi hotmail does sync via the WiFi-connection. Just thought that I would mention this as a possible last resort.
It may also give some ideas to people trying to fix this... shortcoming.

Hmm strange I will have to try this out.
Thanks!
any Updates?
I have this same problem as well
The only way seems to be to turn your phone off and then use Wifi.
oh i will try it so basically turn the Phone on Airplane Mode

Email Problem

Originally I had the vodafone firmware and my email would only work through GPRS or wifi.
I reflashed with firmware R2A generic and it was working fine through both GPRS and wifi.
Randomly one day it just stopped working. I can now only access my email using wifi. I can't log into windows live unless i'm on wifi either, but the internet, google maps and dashwire all work using gprs
Email says
Error Syncronising
and i get a system message saying
Cannot connect wtih current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap settings.
But obviously I don't know what to change because the other things I mentioned work fine. I get the same problem if I start the data connection first
I would check in settings->connections->connections->advanced-select network
if the 2 dropdown are set to my homenetwork it will only use wifi to access
Please check my topic, i kinda have the same problem......

Cannot Connect ActiveSync via GPRS using MyWork Network

Very Strange Problem with ActiveSync over GPRS.
I upgraded Imate JasJam WM6.0 to HTC HD2 Telstra WM6.5.
Device uses activesync over Telstra NextG to My Work Network with Exchange Server 2003. Setup the new HTC with the same work network authentication credentials, used the same Activesync credentials for Exchange Mail Server. I now have the default Telstra Internet connection plus MyWork Network connection. The new WM6.5 connections area is a little different but not too difficult. I started it up and worked first time. Fantastic.
I purchased another HTC HD2 and did the same for a work colleague. Once again worked first shot. Fantastic. Couldn't be happier with the trial.
Purchased 10 more for the rest of the team to upgrade their Jasjams. Setup the next one and no worries with the connection but it would not start active sync. Then setup the next one, with exactly the same problem - activesync spins for about 30secs then pops the 'Cannot Connect' error. Then I setup the next HTC and it worked perfectly. The Jasjam upgrade program is now stopped pending resolution!
So we have 3 that will sync to exchange mail and 2 that won't. I still have a drawer full of brand new HD2's so I try other devices, same problem. I move the SIM back into the JasJam, no problems so its not the SIM or the user credentials. So I try using my own credentials into a HD2 that won't sync and get the same problem, HOWEVER, without touching my own working HD2 whule testing the faulty one, my own device will now not sync either.!
The Work Connection dials telstra.corp and my credentials establish the connection OK which does work and can run other remote apps. The cannot connect error has a blank where you would expect to see the number dialed so it means that activesync no longer knows how to connect. If I change the internet connection from Telstra Internet to MyWork Connection then activesync works OK. Then change it back to Telstra Internet and Activesync still works OK, so that seemed to solve the problem, but now the device cannot connect to the Internet. This is all very strange.
Have tried internet/dedicated setting but this seems to ignore me anyway.
Have tried diabling '...Faster Data Sync..'
Device syncs via a USB/PC connection without a trouble.
Anyone got any ideas. Thanks
Workaround found but its still strange behaviour.
On the HD2 the Telstra connections can't be edited so I created a new one and supplied the access point, IP address and proxy from the old JasJam. The HD2 now has my work connection and my own version of the Telstra connection. This seemed to do the trick. I now have Internet from Telstra and activesync via GPRS to my work Exchange Server.
However what caused Activesync to not know how to connect in the first place?
I would appreciate any ideas you might have. Thanks
I have been having exactly the same issue as posted above and have been tearing my hair out for the last couple of days trying to fix it.
I am syncing using ActiveSync on my HD2 ( WM6.5 ) to Google calendar using google sync and was getting the same unable to connect error or ActiveSync just sitting there saying Waiting for Network.
Syncing worked fine if I connectd to my Wireless network but OTA just wouldn't work.
After much googling I came upon this thread so tried setting up a new connection to Telstra Internet but this didn't fix it.
But then I happened upon the solution, so thought I'd spend the time posting it here in case it can help somebody else with the issue.
Open Tools/ActiveSync on the HD2, then Menu/Options.
Highlight "Microsoft Exchange" and press Settings.
Assuming your settings are already entered and correct, press Next until you see the list of what to Sync (Contacts, Calendar etc).
Now press MENU and select Advanced.
Under Connection, change this to Internet (click OK if you get a warming about not using a dedicated connection) , and press Save then Finish, and finally press OK.
As soon as I did this syncing worked via the Telstra Internet connection and has worked perfectly for the whole of today.
So I hope this helps somebody else out there who like me may have been googling for ages trying to find a solution to this issue.
No Activesync Through Telco Connection
I was also having activesync issues. The connection worked fine via WiFi through any access point (home, work, friend's house) but would not sync through Telstra Internet.
I was trying the "internet" option rpalmer68 mentioned when I stumbled upon the "Sync data when roaming" setting in >SETTINGS >DATA SERVICES >ACTIVESYNC.
After turning this on magic began to happen. All working perfectly.
I realised that I still had the "internet" connection set as above and went back to change it when I noticed it had changed to "dedicated".
I am using stock standard Telstra issued HD2 and haven't needed to modified any network connections.
This may be a simpler solution to try with the same outcome.
I had the same problem with my HD2. Changing the "Sync data when roaming" made no difference.
But rpalmer68's solution worked perfectly.
I noticed that I had to set the connection to Internet (this made it work). And then, when I checked the settings later, it had changed itself to Dedicated.
Setting the connection to Dedicated myself did not solve the problem (it changes itself back to blank).
