excess fees - Wing, P4350 General

How can I make the wing safe so I don't incur any unnecessary fees? I've read stories about how some used the internet and he was charged $2000 for only one month. Anyone with similar experience?

Get a program that monitors GPRS activity to make sure you don't go over your allotted data usage... or sign up for the unlimited data plan with your service provider.

Is there a plan i can get to prevent this? There's a data plan for $5.99. Do I need this plan if I plan to use AIM?

If you're going to use the Internet (beyond AIM/SMS/MMS).. things like google.com, or searches, or other websites..
Get the Total Internet Addon, $39.99/mo.. this also gives your phone wifi hotspot access when you're at a t-mobile hotspot
If you're Texting, I believe T-Mobile has 3 Texting plans:
4.99 = 400
9.99 = 1000
14.99 = Unlimited
These will not cover E-mails and any web-surfing...
IMO, if you want to prevent overages:
-Pick a minute plan you can't easily touch
-Get Total Internet Addon
-Get more Text messages then you think you need
I went with Unlimited Text and Internet, and my minute plan was a promotional rate (1000 min / 39.99) .. So basically I'll never see an overage charge.... Unless I go on T-Mobile web and download ringtones and wallpapers.. why would someone do that with the Wing? I don't know

Thanks for help! So if I decide to use starbucks wifi or my own wifi than I would need the total internet addon? What about the $5.99 data plan? What does that do?

Correction, unlimited internet is now only 19.99 for all phones.
It used to be 29.99 for wings and non blackberry (blackberry is 19.99), but now its all the same price..
Trust me, just get unlimited. Otherwise you'll be charged by the MB when you go over the limit, and it gets REALLY costly.
Also, WIFI is free, no matter where you are. As long as theres a signal, and internet on that signal, you can use wifi for free regardless what internet plan you have/dont have
the 5.99 data plan is like a dumbed down version of the internet in my opinion. It allows for quick online look ups (like places to eat, movies, sports, ect), but it lacks the FULL capability of the internet like included in the 19.99 package. But like I said, just get unlimited. Especially since its so cheap now, if you have a Smartphone or PPC, there's no reason NOT to get it.

oh, and one more thing. Those prices for messaging listed above are correct, UNLESS, you have MyFaves. If you do, then unlimited texting is only 9.99

Cingular data plan help

Ok I can't get straight awnsers out of cingular so xda to the rescue again. I want unlimited internet with the ability to stream via orb and need text messaging. I have no need or want to tether. So will a media max plan work or do I have to have the unlimited pda data plan?
I have the old Media Works Plan, (1500 txt, 200 MMS, and Unlimited internet, 19.99) and i have no problem on my 8525.
Do you use internet alot
yes, use it with IM+ for instant messenging. and web browsing
You are "supposed" to have the PDA Connect plan for an 8525, however the truth is that any of the cheaper MEdia Net plans will work.
But getting a rep to put you on that plan can prove difficult. Easiest thing to do is to keep a cheap/free 3G phone on hand like the LG CU-400 or 500. Put the IMEI for that LG on file with Cingular then they won't be the wiser. Just make sure you use the [email protected] login and not the [email protected] one.
can i not just add and change features via my account on the website?
Yes, you should be able to go to OLAM and change the feature there. Much easier than going through CS.
one other quick question. Will the media works package be able to use umts when it arrives.

That's a really good question! But I just read over at the cingular forums that with the mediamax bundle there is NO streaming of audio/video through medianet. but i connect with wap.cingular every time with my pdaconnect plan. I almost changed it but worried about this... anyone had any experience with this?
I have the PDA Unlimited plan for $40 and I have not had any problems yet.
Cingular dataplan
I have the mediamax unlimited 200 text plan for 19.99 and can do pretty much anything I want with it except connect to certain vpn's. I tried getting the rep at the store and the CS on the phone to change it from the PDA unlimited plan they autostuck me with, but they wouldnt do it so I did it myself online.

COOL- im almost there.. but what i want to know specifically is if Orb or SiriusWM5 will stream without excess charges..And also, did you unselect your pdaplan and select your mediamax at the same time and then hit change? or did you do it in steps?

@shogunmark: do you anything about limit for unlimited accounts - when flags are rised?
I am considering swith to Cingular from T-Mobile. But I use much data - around 80-100 MB per mo. on TyTN and additionaly 200 MB on Network Data Card - same SIM card.
I was told that I should go for Laptop Connect Data plan but it is almost 60 USD per mo. - in my opinion it is too much.
So with mediamax - will I be safe?

Using Wifi + hidden fees

Well, I am a cheap guy, for the most part. With that stated, I wanted to know if it is free (i.e. no text charges) to send and receive email using the provided outlook application on the 8125 via wifi. I believe AIM costs money, regardless of wifi (using regular AIM). Anyway, I dont care about AIM, but I was just curious about the email situation. Thanks in advance!
using wifi
Whenever I use wifi, there are no hidden fees. For instance, when I'm at home and use my own wifi access point it would be quiet doubtable if I have to pay someone else for using my own gear. But then again, I pay approx 10 euro for unlimited use of gprs. so no data limit.
Well i love gprs but the costs Pi** me right off.
i downloaded about 1.7mb and i got a AU$25 bill for JUST that data.
Well, me being a cheap b***** myself have been doing some testing regarding this. Using WiFi does not charge anything, assuming the HotSpot is free. Using GPRS on my provider (Orange DR) set me back about 30 mins. off my plan per Mb.
BTW Unlimited Data is not an option for me so far, US$50 plus taxes is not cheap.
gprs costs
i pay approx €30,- a month
this is including my flat fee for the data use via gprs
for me in the Netherlands, this is cheap.
of course this is completely dependable of what is affordable for one or another.

Nobody would help you to STEAL
which phone plan are you on? Please note that of you are say telstra or virgin mobile customer you are always able to get hsdpa connectio without first signing up for their data plan. In this case, all data usage will be charged at the ultra expensive rate of about 1.5 cents per kb. This is also the rate one pays for exceeding the allocated quota under a data plan. I know there was a guy with a 1 gb plan who was billed about 15k in a month for exceeding his plan by 7 percent.
I hope your telco has not just stolen from YOU instead of the other way round!
am using 3G's 99 plan for now.
i have been checking my bill's. it didnt show a big rise
i think i may keep look
perhaps you should do some research here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=124 aboutdata plans in australia.
If you are on the "3" network you are roaming anywhere outside the limited network and charges are then anything but free
BTW I also upgraded to the WM6 and have a virgin (only 300mb )data plan and have no connection troubles
I'm a bit lucky that I got the 1gb data pack for $10 from virgin before they changed the plan offer.
I normally use about 800mb per month, but I still watch my usage with a gprs monitor. The penalty for exceeding the quotas is scary, judging by the postings to the whirlpool forum. I'm frankly quite concern for people who innocently step into the trap of using it thinking it is free,or carelessly exceed the quota. The rate of 1.5 cents per kb is day light robbery. Display of one web page could cost close to $10!

I want to drop my pda data plan that is $40/month to the media max for $20/month. If I do this will I loose anything like outlook email or web surfing?
No, but youll be limited on the amount of data you can transfer without paying per kb. Dont you think that ATT would be a better place to ask this other than a software developers forum.

I use just fine except for internet radio, at&t blocked the port or sevice that it was using, so I just did a vpn link with my home router and it works fine, But yeah unlimited data for 20.00 bucks a month yipee

Officially the MediaMax plan is not supposed to be used with PDA phone like the 8525. If you go to the Cingular store, they will not let you activate a MediaMax plan and will force you to use one of the PDA data plans. They are also not supposed to let you activate the MediaMax plan on-line or by phone if you have a PDA either. If you already were using MediaMax when you changed to a PDA phone like the 8525, then they do not catch that.

Terms of service. If they catch you using a PDA with the $20 service they'll likely drop your data plan and not let you resubscribe to it until you get the $40 service.
I found this about a month ago when I was looking for an answer to this similar question (but regarding tethering with a laptop & dataplans). I post it here in an effort to share something that may be useful to others with similar questions.
------
What AT&T doesn't tell you is that all of the data plans are the same, they all work the same way, and there's no difference between the $20 media max data plan, $40 pda plan, or $60 laptop plan.
Well almost none, there is one difference which I'll explain. But the point is tethering or not, you'll never be charged a single penny more than your flat unlimited rate no matter what you do.
AT&T doesn't differentiate tethered data vs. phone-originated. To them it's all used the same way. The phone logs in to the data APN and uses data and in some case that can be coming/going to the laptop.
Officially for tethering or laptop data cards alike, you're supposed to have the $60 "laptop connect" aka "data connect" unlimited plan.
So what's the difference?
Here's a little primer on data plans.... AT&T has 3 access points (APN's or Access point names.)
1) wap.cingular
2) isp.cingular
3) blackberry.net
#3 is only on blackberry plans and it's necessary to use blackberry connect for your Treo if you were to try to use it. Otherwise, it's not interesting for this discussion.
For ALL AT&T phones (flip/bar phones,) Windows mobile, Symbian, Palm OS, laptop cards, and tethering.. in other words EVERYTHING that's not a Blackberry, they use APN #1 and #2 above (wap.cingular or isp.cingular.)
wap.cingular = NAT IP address. Basically IP address sharing you find on any corporate or home router.
isp.cingular = Public IP address. Exists for the purpose of supporting VPN clients, some of which have trouble working over NAT.
wap.cingular is intended for use with all phones, PDAs, etc.
isp.cingular is intended for data cards and tethering.
However, they're not mututally exclusive to those operations. You can use a phone on isp.cingular and tether on wap.cingular for example.
OK, now the data plans:
$20 Media Max 200 = wap.cingular only
$40 PDA "personal" Max (1500 text messages) = wap.cingular only
$40 PDA Connect Unlimited (aka PDA39) (no text messages) aka PDA enterprise = wap.cingular + isp.cingular
$60 laptop plan = wap.cingular + isp.cingular
Any plan with "tethering" will include isp.cingular + wap.cingular.
Any plan with "Personal" in the name will be wap.cingular only.
OK so what does all of this mean?
None of this means anything except that I'm trying to explain how the different data plans aren't different.
If you have a data plan that includes isp.cingular, you can use as well as tether on isp.cingular. If you have a plan with wap.cingular only, tether and only use wap.cingular, never use isp.cingular.
On plans that don't include isp.cingular, it should simply fail to connect. But to be safe make sure you don't see any kind of "internet pay per use" or similar wording on your features list. that would mean wap.cingular is unlimited and isp.cingular is "pay per use" rates.
This is how you'd get burned by a big bill and how people have been burned in the past. But AT&T seems to have fixed the problem and no longer put isp.cingular PPU on accounts anymore.
Just simply be aware of this so you can avoid it.
What APN you're using, you'll have to drill down in to the connection settings. The profile "My ISP" as well as "Media Net" are both set up by default to use wap.cingular (aka works on all plans.) Media net only differs in that it's set up to use a proxy.
You can also get more on this on a page I published here:
http://www.gadgetech.info/wireless/cingular/data/
Note, this is outdated. it was written before they introduced "PDA Personal" Max, so it doesn't reflect those new plans. But it is still educational if you want to know more about the difference between APNs.
Having said all of that, I have Media Max 200 and have had it for 4+ years on Treos. I've tethered, and use my SIM in laptop cards. I've never been charged extra. to be charged extra would be a billing error that AT&T should resolve.
PDANet is the easiest way to tether on a Treo 750.
When you get the WM6 upgrade, it has internet sharing built in which takes away the need for PDANet.
Note on WM6, the use "My ISP" not "ICS." "ICS" is set up to use isp.cingular.

No you wont lose anything. But my friend had the $20/month plan and his phonebill was $350.00. I think its better to go with the unlimited data plan for $40.00 unless you live in a city that has free wifi. I just use wifi myself. I know AT&T hates that.
I just signed up online. Att doesn't know what phone i have or seem to anyway. I use wap.cingular login. $20 a month for about 6months now and no problems.
^^^^^$20 month plan is Unlimited. Intended for normal Cellphones not PDAs.

What internet plan are you using for your Wing?

I have a T-Mobile Wing running Open Touch.
Everything on my phone is set... except for internet.
What are my available options for internet plans for my wing?
I want unlimited internet usage and unlimited text.
What is available and what is the best/cheapest plan to get so I can use it for Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Maps, Weather, etc.??
I just have unlimited text and unlimited data. I figured that's what every wing user had.
So, that's $14.99 for Unlimited text and $19.99 for Unlimited data..
Is there any other option? Or is this the only way to go..
Can I use the $5.99 T-Zones plan for internet?

You can but don't expect it to be there when you need it. My daughter does the 5.99 and I on average 2 times a month I get asked to see if I can figure out why she can't go to Myspace in Opera Mini. It is usually her fault changing a setting but still I do expect the day that the loophole will be closed. As for myself I have unlimited text and data. I just like to use my phone as I want when I want. As a matter of fact today my ISP (Comcast) was having difficulties with the ambient temps around here so web was slow or not loading. So I used my phone's ICS to browse the forum.
it's in my signature
Thanks for the input..
So the Unlimited data is the best thing to do, but the $19.99 hurts, haha.
Say I get the T-Zones $5.99, once I get that activated, will my internet explorer, weather, google maps, etc work automatically?
Or do I have to change some settings and download some cabs before they work?
Can someone shed some light on what steps I have to take to get T-Zones internet to work my internet explorer, google maps, etc. after I activate it?
Unlimited will require no configuration changes. "If" you already have T-Mobile configurations present.
T-Zones will not work right away the proxy configurations are listed all over the forum and can be found via google. There is a decent amount of configuration edits. It can be tedious or work right the first try all a matter of how well you follow the directions and if the directions you find do indeed work.
Good Luck!
p.s. If you plan on using palringo (all in 1 IM) ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) the proxy did not work for me. Can't say that is true with everyone.
I just tried the proxy settings 2 nights ago with a friends sim card on my Wing just to show him what the benefits are of paying for proper service and not.
My opinion is get the Full Service it just works.
Thanks for your response.. really helpful.
I'm going to try the T-Zones for a while, if I hate it, then I'm going with the Unlimited Data Plan...

Yeah, I'm too cheap for that too, but now I'm starting to rethink the 5.99 tzones though. Although, wi/fi works fine and anytime I need it, I can usually find a hotspot.
Because of work, I HAVE to have unlimited internet and the worldclass service, so that I can use my phone and internet from any country... If I wasn't always traveling on a monthly basis.
I got the Tzones set up the proxy like in the tutorial loaded up a few pages fine then i had to go to work...a couple hours later tried it again and this is the message that I get on internet explorer now...
"Error:request content '(website here)' cannot be accessed. You do not have access to the site."
wifi is fine for me it saves me 20 dollars a month...lol

you goofed by not just telling them that you swap your sim out with another smaller phone once in a while that you DO use t-zones with. If they ask you why, just tell them it's none of their business Or if you are feeling nice then say that you're 2nd phone is for times when you want to use your smaller Samsung T-809 or whatever to keep in your pocket when you're out... like clubs, ect. The wing is not pocket friendly so that's what I actually do sometimes.
Bottom line is, they have no business canceling your t-zones without your permission.
Im on a $2.99 offer for Unlimited T-Zones and Unlimited Picture Messages
I use the T-Mo Proxy =]
