Hello World!
Microsoft is serving a bunch of updates for each OS like XP oder Vista to fix problems with security, compatibility and so on. And we know, every shipped OS has bugs!
But for Windows Mobile 5 I can't find any officially Update from Microsoft. So, whats Microsofts update strategy? Are there actually any updates?
Thanks in advance!
Yes.. It's called WM6. That's the curse of imbedded software......very few patches.
Strategy is to deliver a new OS every 18 to drive phone upgrades. This is supported by the primary sales channel... cellular providers. They may offer minor upgrades to fix bugs, but those are available only in branded updates from the cellular company.
WM6 also has Windows Update

Will I be able to upgrade XDA's 2002 Version to 2003 when it's released in the next months ? :?:
No, at least not likely. Rumour has it that the new OS requires more than 32Mb of ROM. That is why the iPaq 3970 and 5450 (and a few others) carry 48Mb ROM.
Would we not be able to do a limited upgrade AKA the 3630 ipaq upgrade to 2002 and maybe add a few apps into ram ??
I hope so.
maybe also we can increase ROM size? does hardware supports this? As I know, RAM upgradeable on all MDAs/XDAs to 64Mb (and maybe more? I seen info but don't know how)
So if we'll got 48 or 64 of flash rom we can upgrade. But what 2003 system is will be? Can you give some infos about it?
Pocket PC 2003, codename Ozone, will primarily be a bug-fix release for Pocket PC 2002 with few enhancements. Users should not expect big changes.
Well i agree you may not notice many deffrence or changes but i was assured from people at Microsoft that majore changes within the OS will take place. I am not sure if they will ever be able the fix the bugs GOD knows each day we discover tonnes...
Anyways we should wait and see
Why wouldn't it be possible to upgrade?
The amount of build-in ROM shouldnt be that much of a problem. Since PPC 2003 PE mainly features bugfixes that total size of the OS shouldn't have increased that much. Else it would be possible to install some application is RAM like they did for the iPAQ 36xx.
The only real reason I can think of is the lack of support from O2 and the other telco's that sell these devices.
Keep hoping!
Kamil
I think it is very possible to see XDA can upgrade to PPC 2003 phone edition, however the upgrade may not be free. I look forword to upgrade my T-Mobile MDA with a PPC 2003 O2 English ROM  .
Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition
More About Pocket PC 2003
Microsoft recently gave developers an overview of the next version of its Pocket PC operating system. Codename Ozone, this will primarily be a bug-fix release for Pocket PC 2002 with a few enhancements.
Developers will have access to new tools to allow them to build applications that take fuller advantage of the XScale processors found in most of today's handhelds. However, these applications will not run under Pocket PC 2002. Of course, the reverse is not true, as Pocket PC 2003 will retain backward compatibility.
Microsoft has decided to postpone adding other new features, such as voiced control, until a .NET version of Pocket PC is completed -- expected in two to three years.
it will be possible to upgrade the 3870 too ...and it has the same amount of rom ...if i'm not wrong ...
Er... according to Microsoft sources, pocket PC 2003 phone edition runs on Windows CE 4.2 - this is more than a bug fix release!
2003
does anyone have a copy of the BETA version floating around?
IT works fine
I have hacked to HTC phone, parts are SX56 and parts are XDA, but I am running 2003 fine on it right now. There seems to be all sorts of little things, and some of the skins are much prettier, but other than that I don't notice anything huge.
Yeah, I am running Palm OS 6 in my reconstruted XDA with 256M ram and Amd Opteron processor too. It is extermely fast, as fast as my Desktop computer.
hehe

Sorry, my BT-Desktop´s Battery was empty
YESSSS!!!
xda with PocketPC2003 is a reality! At least one such device was received by local pda-related software company for review. I have no details about current devices upgrade availability, though.
The only fact is: PocketPC2003 for xda exists and should be pre-installed to new devices after OS will be presented by Microsoft.
I have it on good authority that it is feasible to put PC2003 onto Xda, however this will only happen for evaluation purposes and is unlikely to be available as a general upgrade.
Here it is guys !!!!!!!!! Let's wait for our ROMs now !!!
First AKU 2 device with Messaging and Security Feature Pack ships! Gigabyte G-Smart
Some sites have been incorrectly claiming there are delays in AKU 2 availability (which is complete nonsense) - to prove there aren't any delays....
Here is the first AKU 2 device - the Gigabyte G-Smart!
AKU 2 contains the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5 which provides the 'Direct Push' email capability.
The Gigabyte G-Smart is shipping in Taiwan and is from a new Windows Mobile OEM Gigabyte - the device is pretty innovative coming with a built-in TV and FM Tuner!
The first of a plethora of AKU 2 devices to hit the market
and here is the official news:

This looks great! I wonder if any of the OEMs will bother providing a rom update in the near future though....they're known to be lazy and slowww!
Lets hope they do it

Lol. No they are not going to release 6.1 using the WM update.
They never released an update using the WM update.
Updates are available through the manufacturer of the device (in this case HTC)
They have the possibility to give us an update, but that don't have to do this if they don't want this
Windows Mobile 7 will do updates
WinMo 7 will do real updates via "automatic updates"
I think WinMo6 has it in there as some sort of test. I'm sure they count
the number of times the update.winmo site has been accessed from a device.
You can also be sure they datamine the country, model, device etc..
Nothing wrong there. Would like to see some real updates tho'
Keep clicking the icon maybe they'll release something to keep us quiet.
So this web site is is crowing about new versions of windows live apps, with more (or reinstated) features like photo upload and live messenger... but all the download links lead in a circle (when they don't get caught by the popup blocker).
Does anyone have an actual download of these apps?
http://www.windowsliveformobile.com/en-us/home/default.aspx
If you're referring to what I think you are referring to, I don't they are out yet
No wonder the web site looks like it's half finished. Whoever set it to live should be fired.
And dude. Hi, neighbor.
i think it will show up here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/mobile/wl/download-en-us.mspx
right now they have 10.6.0042.800
but i remember reading somewhete that they will be releasing a new version on thursday, thats tomrrow, so i'm waiting to see what they have instore for the new version. plus the funny thing is in build 6.5 21198 they 10.6.0052.900 so it might be that build they're talking about. the 0052.900 build is not much different from the other builds but i do like the slide left/right functionality though.

It's up now,
http://mobile.microsoft.com/live/En-US/mobile/default.mspx
Version is v10.06.0046.0800
Older than the latest that is around here, v10.06.0050.2700
Anybody want to confirm messenger will indeed install (on Verizon). If not I will keep what I have.
edit: yeah it works sweet! Now if only I can find what changed/fixed from the version I used to have...
Installed on my VZW XV6900.
Will there ever be
A version that actually works and does not come up with the network connection issue ?
seems to work well....actually fixed an issue I had with the stock Touch Pro ROM (the new one) where Messenger didn't work on my phone (it would close immediately after opening).
installed and so far it is working great. no problems at (soft reset after instll). it seems scrolling large emails filled with images have been improved but really not sure about that, maybe its just the speed of the 21198 build. but all in all its great. i wish they had the dinamic backgrounds like they have on the desktop.

Looks good, thanks!
Wait, where is this latest version? I searched for that version number, but nothing is coming up.
Has anyone figured out how to get the photo upload to work? Uploading photos to your live space is advertised as a feature, but I don't see any kind of interface for it.

Perhaps I'm being a penis but can you update the HD2 like a desktop edition of windows i.e. vista / 7 on the flyi.e. over 3G/wifi or are any updates only via Sync?
What is this, I don't even
Windows 6.1 had an update option in the start menu, and that used a data connection/wi-fi - whatever was available. I suppose you could download updates and do it via the usb cable. Anyway, if this option still exists in 6.5, I've not seen it anywhere.
This is probably all moot anyway. I don't think Microsoft bother making updates for windows mobile. That's what xda devs is for
Thanks - I guessed there are very few updates for Winmo just an idea

And where would chefs here on xda get those updates if MS didn't make them? Of course they make updates (called Adaptation Kit Upgrades, referred to as AKU usually), they just don't distribute them to end users. There's a big difference between WM and your desktop system, for major updates on your phone you'll usually have to reflash the whole ROM image. And that ROM image is made by the OEM, not Microsoft, and includes tons of OEM software and drivers. This software can even break with a new update, so pushing OS changes directly could cause lots of problems. So the only safe way to have updates would be from the OEM (HTC in our case). Or we can get them unofficially here.
The Windows Update applet in earlier versions of WM had only minor updates such as daylight time database changes and so on, so I guess it was rarely used by anyone.
Thanks for the Info - I get the drift
