Cingular 8525 Troubleshooting and Inquiries - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I've just recieved my Cingular 8525 and it looks great. I've got it unlocked and using it up here in Toronto (Canada) under Rogers. It was a tad expensive so I may decide to sell it, but I wanted to play around with a couple things first and thought that you guys were the best to help me.
1. I wanted to know what program can map the 'ok' key as minimize and close if the button was held down.
2. My keys aren't map correctly to the displayed keys on the keyboard. The letters and numbers are right, but some of the symbols like _, ?, ;, etc. are not mapped correctly and I wanted to know how I could fix this? I'm guessing I have to play around with the registry? I'm using the default Cingular ROM (v 1.30.502.1 dated 08/21/06) so I don't know why some symbols are mapped incorrectly.
3. I'm interested in the Tytndailer and was wondering if you guys are having any problems with it? I would like the ability to dail with 1 hand. =p
4. I want to upgrade my ROM to the latest Cingular one which is the 2.06.502.3 dated 02/02/07, but I'm not too familiar with flashing ROMs. What is the easiest/best method to upgrade the rom? If I do upgrade to the latest Cingular ROM, would I be running WM6? I do know that the latest ROM release enables the PTT button and I'm wondering if anyone knew if Rogers supported PTT. =p
Anyway, if anyone could help a fellow HTC 8525 user out, that would be great. As long as none of these things void warranty, I'm all for it. Thanks a lot!

If anyone is interested in a trade for the phone, I'm open to that actually.
Anyway, if someone can help me out with my four dilemmas, that would be great!

Password/Locking issues on ROM 1.30.68

Hi Guys,
I have installed the new ROM and radio upgrade. It has made my Universal really fly ! I use it mainly for tomtom 5.21 and it has sped up the refresh screen and made the maps smoother.
The only issue that is really annoying is that the Password program has been replaced by a "lock" program that does not recognise that Tomtom is running and the screen keeps coming on and I need to tap password in whilst driving.
I dont want to downgrade the ROM so does anyone know how to revert back to old password program or know a better one to use?
Thanks for any help
It might be worth just grinning and bearing it. its only a "test" rom, the real one cant be to far away now,
test rom, hmmm,, what of it were they testing???
are there lots of test roms we have not been privy to? i would imagine so hmm.
heh i got it, its tomtoms fault, must be. they should release another patch. surlly its tomtom app thats not supressing the timeout!!!
Guess you are right.
I just wish each rom upgrade would be "better" rather than just "different"
The solution

Brand new O2miniS: how to tweak to get max performance?!

Dear all,
I'm new here, I've had a good look through the forum, but I feel a lot of the information is a little over my head. I was hoping for some advice for my new MiniS out of the box:
Regarding setting up my device, are there any programs I should or shouldn't install? Or anything I should uninstall immediately?
Am I better off with the O2 ROM, or is there another I should flash my device with?
Are there any particularly good pieces of software that you could recommend?
Thank-you very much for your help,
s_h_a_h_i_d

Surely since the XDA Mini S is an HTC Wizard, not a Magician, he'd be better off looking at the Wizard forum?
o2 mini is a magician init
Yes, but the thread title refers to an O2 Mini S.....
He is refering to MiniS mate.
HA HA, Now that the squabbles are over, , I'd like to add my bit.
The best thing anyone can do first off with the MINI S is toss that o2 customised crap right off.
I am assuming you have'nt put too much on it yet
Press the soft reset button. (Under the IR port)
As you let go of that reset button, make sure you are pressing both the comm manager button, AND the voice buttons. Thats the top left side and upper right side buttons.
This is called a hard reset and WILL ERASE EVERYTHING prom the phones memory.
Do the screen calibration and cut/paste bit.
When it say's "Tap the screen to start using your device", be ready to press the soft reset again.
This is because when you tap the screen, a customisation box will appear.
PRESS THE RESET BUTTON, when you see this box.
The phone reboots and hey presto, proper PDA, not o2's idea of one.
Hope this helps.
Just to add to the above, there is a thread on here regarding decent software for the PDA.
Have a look through the thread list and you'll see it.
I would recommend Resco as a decent file manager with some excellent features. Be careful with some of these tools if you are not sure what you are doing.
Other than that, have fun.

Hi Jerry-S and everyone.
I've just got a T-Mobile MDA Vario, the Wizard version of T-Mobile.
Would you recommend me doing the same hard reset so that I can get rid of T-Mobile settings?
My Device Information shows:
ROM version: 1.6.2.4 WWE
ROM date: 11/15/05
Radio version: 01.12.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.23
ExtROM version: 1.6.2.105
Can I update to a newer ROM and if yes where can I download it and how can I update ROM, please?
Thanks for your help.
Rgds,
PPB
Hi BUSPBP,
I am a relatively new user myself and won't offer advice on anything I am not sure of.
I have seen ROM updates on here for other networks but as I am on o2 and running my most recent ROM, I can't comment.
Just to be sure you understand though, the updating of a rom that isn't specifically for your unit has many risks. At the end of the day, it's up to you so just put ROM in the search page and have a look at what comes up.
As for removing the Network Provider software, I would assume that the process is the same for them all, as the extra operator features are installed from an extended ROM.
That's to say, the main OS is installed first and then the extra stuff installs afterward.
If you can replace things that you have put on your phone then give it a go, it'll either work or not.
At the end of the day, if you like the extra things and want them back, do another hard reset and let everything install as it wants.
Hope this helps.
Hi Jerry-S,
Thanks for your help. After reading through some threads in this forum I've decided to upgrade my Wizard with the new Qtek ROM. It now works much faster and I don't have any more problem with Wifi connection.
Can you or anybody please advise what does the ExtROM do and if I can exclude it from the device? Any good in doing this?
PPB
If you think of it this way, it's a little easier to understand.
When the device is new or has a hard reset, the following happens.
(If I get this wrong, I'm sure someone will let me know. LOL)
1. The device powers up and a section called the Bootloader starts.
2. As the operating system is not there, it installs it from a ROM.
3. The operating system then runs and you do the stylus calibration
and the date / time settings
4. That is the PDA set up.
5. After that, another ROM is installed, (If you let it), which contains all
the customised software for your particular phone company supplier.
All it means is that the basic Windows OS is running at the same time as the custom software and the Windows functions are accessed by the company customisations that you are presented with.
Because of this, the processor in the PDA is working in effect, twice as hard and it is slower.
As far as I am aware, there is nothing in this custom layer that can't be done directly in the Windows layer.
I would like to upgrade my ROM also as the o2 ROM is one of the oldest versions released, but as I see it, once installed, there is currently no way to downgrade back to the previous version if something goes wrong. Thats the only reason I have'nt done it.
As for removing it completely, I am not sure. I have seen posts on here reffering to that, but I think it is contained somewhere that you couldn't make use of anyway. i.e. Making use of the extra storage space that it takes up.
I know I get a bit long winded, but I have a bit of a job explaining stuff. LOL, sorry.
Hi Jerry-S,
I remember someone told that we could prevent the ExtROM from installation by soft-resetting before that process, but since I don't know yet what are included in the ExtROM and if there's any good in doing so I haven't tried it yet.
I don't know if the O2 device and network settings have anything too special that you could hardly set. In my case though I've got the T-Mobile version I am actually using Orange, so it's perhaps easier for me to come to the decision. And it's worth it for me. No problem with the upgrade, given that I've unlocked CID in advance as someone has warned. And the device is running much faster. That has even halted my intension of doing the overclock, at least for now

Comments recieved.
I must admit, I kept looking and looking at the ROM file on my computer thinking errrrrrrmmmmm...............
Well I did it, but I didn't notice any real increase in speed, actually it seemed slower to me.
That in mind I though, balls and put the o2 Rom back on.
As for the EXT ROM reatures, I think the main advantage is that the MMS and Mobile web settings are set for you, but those could be found quite easily.

There is a new ROM that is official but the one you want from 2/2/07 is not official release even though it is from Cingular. I dont know if that would void your warranty seeing that it wasnt officilaly released. Anyway the one from ciingular from 09/21/06 i think ROM 1.34 can be found on HTC site might help and is guaranteed to be thr real CIngular for warranty purposes. Also did you SUperCIID, then you already voided warranty.

Numeric Forced on Flip out keyboard when on the phone

I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed/experienced this.
If I am on a phone call, and want to send an email at the same time (I Love you 3G!) I cannot use the hard keyboard because the numeric keys are active rather than the alphabet keys.
Shift, caps locks, etc. will not let me use the alpha keyboard.
I would love to get this fixed if anyone has any suggestions?
There have already been numerous posts on this topic, and have not yet seen a stand alone solution, but I see that vp3G has claimed that it is fixed in his latest rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=331812
Thank you for the link!
I'm not on AT&T, so I'm hoping that a less AT&T specific ROM will come out with this fix.
Thank you again for the info...

Is This Possible??

Alright Peeps, ok, firstly i bought a Charmer (MDA Compact 2 / WM5) it was pink and i decided to change the housing/shell. I opted for the O2 XDA NEO Case as i liked the black, smooth sides, chrome earpiece & Buttons. I know your all thinking why, but i've tried it and every part fits perfectly apart from the button arrangement, I was just wondering if i bought a O2 XDA NEO Keypad which has the exact same connection type as the MDA Compact 2 just the extra 2 buttons, could this work out of the box and recognise all buttons or at least the usual 4 buttons work correctly?, or is there, or could one be made, an application that the buttons could be assigned? please any help would be appreciated, as i love modding my charmer from the wise information within XDA-DEV, your the only site i'd look to for honest answers.
Cheers Bren.
just an opinion, don't go spending money because of it
but from my experience doing similar things with htc smartphones, I reckon it should work, but i doubt it will recognise the extra buttons...
maybe with a cooked ROM?...i don't know.

could there not be some registry tweaks? like adding the buttons manually and moving the others?
i have a button remapping software, but this may be more useless than usefull, i think (it'll probably just move the buttons around) i've bought the shell already and fitted it all buttons work and are in correct place, just the keypad... I'll buy the keypad and fit it coming up to christmas, i'll let you all know the outcome, so if there is any charmers that wish to charm with a prophet/XDA NEO case to the full, i will have the answer.
Any ROM Chefs or Registry Raiders? Help would be appreciated here...
or just shine a little light on the subject.
I think the person who might be able to shed some light is vlodeck, he is a very knowledgeable guy, and he ported gullum's ROM from prophet to charmer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1446686&postcount=1
as a mod, he will probably see this thread anyway, and his time is valuable etc etc, so I am definitely not advocating pestering him
....so wait a while but in case it gets missed, FYI in his sig there is a link to PM "if you need help"
*edit, I have no new information right now so I'm not gonna bump this thread but I have to say...
just saw your other thread, and the one word answer;
rtfwplsthx
made me spit coffee all over my monitor as I LOL'd
(translation - read the f***ing wiki please, thanks.)
I understood it, as I've probably spent too much time reading forums like this one recently
Hi guys
I finally read this thread Yes, I do check up the Charmer forums from time to time.
Ok, as to the question. I don't really do the cooking stuff at this time. Basically because I'm not a windows user anymore but there are registry values for soft keys and buttons. I won't tell you were it exactly is right now, but it's there. And taking myself a little in the past I recall some major problems with setting up the keys in WM6 for charmer, you remember it right? Those calendar and contacts buttons were assigned to Start Menu and OK keys, which were unconfigurable, in the registry at least. So my call is, those buttons you want to make work are hardly worth the potential time spent to actually get them working
Hi, the buttons you had trouble with kinda goes with what i want, like you said the bottom two buttons (calendar/contacts) were start menu and ok, as the keypad for the o2 xda neo has start menu and ok as standard bottom two, so that doesn't need changing (that sound like a bonus to me ) the top two will probably get recognised as the answer/endcall buttons (which is not that bad come to think of it, if buttons cannot be configured). its just the two silver answer/endcall present on the xda neo keyboard which probably wont get recognised, and if not, would there be a way in the registry to ADD them, so it would be a little different than altering settings already there? sort of copying all registry settings for one button and adding it alongside another button setting with some configuration.
Thanks Guys...
Well the Buttons worked straight away, charmer to prophet (lookalike)... all the 6 buttons were recognized instead of 4, and all in the right places. thanks anyway.
