Numeric Forced on Flip out keyboard when on the phone - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed/experienced this.
If I am on a phone call, and want to send an email at the same time (I Love you 3G!) I cannot use the hard keyboard because the numeric keys are active rather than the alphabet keys.
Shift, caps locks, etc. will not let me use the alpha keyboard.
I would love to get this fixed if anyone has any suggestions?

There have already been numerous posts on this topic, and have not yet seen a stand alone solution, but I see that vp3G has claimed that it is fixed in his latest rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=331812

Thank you for the link!
I'm not on AT&T, so I'm hoping that a less AT&T specific ROM will come out with this fix.
Thank you again for the info...

slideout keyboard not working correctly in phone application on Cingular 8525

Hello, all,
I do hope this finds you well.
I am new to this site and of course did some heavy searching before posting this to the forums--I read through forum posts that seem to concern this, and found nothing.
So I have a Cingular 8525 still running WM5--waiting on an official release of 6--basically it's at factory default right now except for registry hacks to turn off the start up sound and change the ActiveSync device name, and give it the default phone skin.
Having said that... All day today, my phone has not wanted to let me dial numbers from the keyboard when in the phone application which is the best way for me to do it, I've found--as opposed to using the jog wheel or joystick thinig...
It will however, let me text just fine, or write e mail or whatever I need to do. When I go into the phone application the only way to dial a number is with the jog wheel, or through the contacts list--I cannot use the keyboard as one normally can once one is in phone mode.
However, if I hit the function key which usually changes to numbers for when you're texting and the like I can dial. So it seems like that even though the sliding keyboard is out and I am quite clearly in the phone application ready to dial a number that my phone is not so willing and ready to let me dial that number via the keypad.
I tried a couple of hard resets to fix this, since I didn't have data to lose just now and because I didn't know if I had accidentally done something bad in the registry. But I'm going to assume it's nothing I've done and some setting under the phone since it's just not working no matter what I do.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Shanda

Wake on slide open?

Hi all. I'm the proud owner of a new XV6800 and I'm wondering, is there any way to make it wake from sleep when I slide out they keyboard?
I have been panning through all of my menus and cannot find a option to wake upon slideout of keyboard. It may not be possible...
Unless someone else knows of a possible registry edit or .cab file...
I haven't seen anything either, my wing did this and I miss the feature.
If you are using Pocket Toolman, which you REALLY should be, under OS tweaks, there is an option to click on, "wakeup when sliding keyboard".
Pocket Toolman is awesome!! And free.

Thanks Benderhoggs! I was looking for something like that. Can't wait to try it!
Sure. You'll love it. One of the best programs I've gotten for my phone so far.

Looks like a great tool, but unless I'm missing something, the "Wakeup when sliding keyboard" feature does not appear to work on my Titan. Any Titan users able to get it to work?
yeah the wake on keyboard feature doesn't seem to be working for my titan...darn
It doesn't work for me either, so I uninstalled it, since other parts weren't either. Looks like a neat tool though.
Crappy Program
I tried this program. It didn't do what it said it would do and also when uninstalled left all the settings that it changed in place. Now I have to do a hard reset. Worthless.

The program was designed to make it easy to change certain registry settings. Perhaps you should've defaulted everything before uninstalling it.
Anyone know another way? This is a feature I'd really like to have

Has anyone discussed this with the developer? It seems like such a waste to do all that work on this app for it not to work properly. There is no place to post comments on the blog, and I noticed the app was just updated yesterday.
I'm leery of installing this with such drastic issues looming. I will e-mail him with a link to this post. His e-mail is [email protected] which is in Canada.

Hi xfortrenox,
Can you give more information on what problems you were having with PT2? What device are you using? You're more than welcomed to email me at [email protected].
I am not able to get the Wake on Slide Function to work on my Verizon xv6800.
Also, since I have installed Toolman, It replaced the CONTACT soft button with Toolman.
I tried to RESTORE the right soft button, but now I have a bunch of weird characters in its place.
Do I need to fix something in the registry to get back CONTACTS for my right soft button?
Thanks!
BTW, LOVE the program so far
..............
I think that a wake on slide open for the titan would be a bad idea. The wake on slide open worked well on the htc apache,, although if you think about how the sliding mechanisms work the apache snapped closed, so it woudl not open easily, the titan on the other hand is spring loaded, so any various movements could trip the device to turn on(if the slide open powerup was enabled). I had wanted this feature at first, but soon realized how randomly the phone would turn on if it was shook or moved a certain way, allowing the phone to slide open the quarter inch required to activate the switch. just some random thoughts about this topic, thanks.
I will have to respectfully and vigorously disagree. First off the power button couldn't really be in a worse place - the bottom of landscape mode... holding it in landscape means none of your fingers could be farther away from the key.
I am still holding out hope to be able to power this thing on with a slide.

would be glad to test a new version out if u get this fixed toolman... I'm on verizon using xv6800 with Verizon signed OEM ROM.
I'd be glad to beta a version that has wake on slide as well, using a sprint mogul with 2.17 ROM.

HTC HD2 Keyboard is KILLING ME!

I just wasted close to a thousand US$ on the most brain damaged SmartPhone ever constructed by HTC - and they've got a lot of brain damaged products to show for.
For one, that IDIOTIC keyboard they got built in there NEVER,EVER lets me finish what I'm typing.
IT allways(!) ends up "correcting me" in mid word and 99% of the time, it corrects it wrongly.
It simply exchanges one letter for another and I'm sure is darn proud of itself while doing it.
And no, I already tried disabling "auto-correction" in the device input options, and it doesn't change a thing.
This is just a moronic design!!!!
How the f$#! can I get that plain old & boring Windows Mobile keyboard to work on that thing?!
Then try TouchPal Pro. But for me, I prefer HD2 native keyboard. The T9 mode is useful.
I'd recommend calibrating the screen (with your thumbs, as if you're using the phone), and just slow down and get used to it. It does take a while, but I can type very fast with it now and very rarely make mistakes. The keyboard takes a lot of practice, but is worth it.
I have T9 mode on and auto-correct off. I like to have suggestions, but don't like it forcing words on me. It usually gives me the correct word by the time I'm half way through typing it, so this obviously speeds up typing.
Incidentally, T9 rather eerily learns how you type. It seems to adapt to your typing style as you go along, so stick with it, or just turn it off completely if you want no suggestions at all.
Deactivate T9 on the keyboard.
I didn't feel happy with the original keyboard, too.
Tried Resco keyboard 5.23.
Now i have a better accuracy.
If you must do the tap tap thing... Touchpal 4.0.... however, I find that Swype is the best and really really fast.... it's almost like magic...
Yes... turn off T9....

Then DIE or use the forum SEARCH!
T9 is supposed to learn your "style", you can't expect it to correct everything right without you teaching it first.
Dont run just yet
You shouldnt need to change ur keyboard... i tried Swipe and i think its really good but still can use the HTC at top speed with T9 and correction on
Things to try first
1.Recalibrate
2.Install 3.3 Cab from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=604831
3 if you dont want to reduce sensitivity just add a screen protector takes away about 3-5% of sensitiveness
Thats all I have done and i dont dread sending texts anymore
Hope this helps

Your heart warming reply was so (not) helpful that it makes me appreciate the other responses which contain actual hints - rather than mindless insults - that much more.
Thanks once more (for nothing)
And by the way, I specifically stated that I did not want *anything* to be auto corrected - as I can correct myself a lot faster if I don't have to correct the keyboard first all the time.
Sorry, but there are countless threads about the keyboard. If you're not able to search before you open another one, then it's your fault if you get resposes like this.
Same for your stupid thread title. Make a proper thread title, use the search and you won't get such responses.
And if you disable T9 and autocorrection, then it won't correct you. If you're still not able to type, then it's your fault. It doesn't exchange letters just for fun. It's you pressing the wrong keys.
This is just a moronic design!!!!

Try the Swype keyboard!
See that T9 switch at the left of the keyboard? Press it. Problem gone.

Understand your anger and frustration if the you are not getting on with the device but a couple of points:
- There are a lot of people (not all) who are happy with their device and have found solutions to the keyboard issue (some suggestions in this thread) so the problem might be your technique perhaps?
- Also, given that you spent nearly $1K on this device, did you not test one out thoroughly first BEFORE buying it? I can't see anyone being silly enough to spend that amount of money on anything, whether its a phone or a vehicle, before checking it out first?
Really interested in your answer to the 2nd question in particular.
Hopefully with the help you have been given here so far and if you take your time you will eventually be able to work with the device. I don't have the issues you have but where I have not been comfortable, adopting a solution off XDA, having searched first, has worked for me.

I totally agree with this. Whilst I don't hate the original keyboard I did find it a touch fiddly. Swype is fantastic IMO' a great idea and so easy to use.
I can sympathise with the frustrations here. I like using auto correct and am very familiar with all of HTCs onscreen keyboards, along with those of the omnia i8000, Galaxy and iPhone and I must say that although the HD2 keyboard isn't the WORST, it can be most frustrating, particularly when you need to type out a quick text. most of my problems stem from what seems to be poor prediction algorithms. let me say that I am no Apple fanboy, but this keyboard has a long way to go to be as excellent as that of the iPhone: often on here if I get ONE letter wrong at the start of the word it will be incapable of understanding what I'm trying to type, whereas if I get a letter wrong somewhere in the middle it'll be fine. another problem I have is that sometimes when sending an sms the cursor will magically jump to the top of the text and I will unwittingly start typing over the start of my initial sentence. Also if I go to delete a number of letters often the keyboard will have a fit and start throwing letters and paragraphs everywhere. I accept that this is probably my finger not being 100 percent accurate but surely it is also a sign that the keyboard is just TOO SENSITIVE, even with the patch installed. I never had this problem on the Hero, nor the iPhone - both of which have vastly smaller screens.
lastly i'd like that t9 button moved as its just TOO easy to catch without realising.
I accept that some people on here don't seem to have any problem, but perhaps you guys are too forgiving, and sometimes it takes a bit of a whine and moan to get things fixed. Like I said, I'm very familiar with onscreen keyboards and accept that there is a certain learning curve to all of them, but after nearly two months with a HD2 I'm starting to believe that this one is very flawed: given the massive screen real estate of the hd2 I believe there is no excuse for a flawed onscreen keyboard. remember, this is a CRUCIAL part of a device with no hardware input facility, and we should not (in my opinion) have to buy third party software to get an acceptable basic user experience on a handset built as a thoroughly commercial mass-media device.
Thats my two cents.

I agree with both of those cents fully
Also with regards to the post a few posts up, I presume that the person who spent $1000 on a phone lives in America where a HD2 would be hard to come buy as its not actually out there yet? You can't really blame him for buying it without testing it, especially with all the rave reviews on hundreds of sites, none of which seem to mention the flaws such as the keyboard and terrible (seriously terrible) sms sending issue.
Actually I also think HTC keyboard is not very good. I will not recommend anybody to use it. Anyway different people have different experience.
If you don't like Swype, you can try Finger Keyboard I think it's better than the HTC Keyboard.
I also have problems with my keyboard but I suspect a hardware fault and I am going to return my phone.
When I type it sometimes selects (multiple) letters on the other side of the keyboard or around the key i pressed. It usually comes in "bursts"; sometimes its nearly impossible to typ. Nearly threw the thing out of a window. Its a good phone but my keyboard is ruining the whole thing. Also (thats more rare) it can begin typing on its own, selecting or opening programs, switching tabs without me touching the screen! I waited for a new ROM and tried various tweaks but it doesn't get any better

Swype erratic and unpredictable?

Hey guys/gals,
I've been using swype for going on three weeks now but it's being a right pain more and more often now.
It just seems to pick words that have nothing like the letters being selected -due to the swype the trail jumping in different directions sometimes I suspect-
I also can't select the second function (punctuation, brackets etc) without a right fuss. when I hold a letter to get the number sitting above it I'll get something like "bbb b" or "xxx" even though my finger's perfectly still. and when I try and hold delete to delete whole words I might get something like "mmm l m lmm"
It just goes mental some times.
Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix the nutty behaviour before Swype and I have a showdown at dawn?
Sounds like your phone and not swype.
I had huge problems with the light grey colored swype (don't know what versions there are, the one extracted from the tmo rom I think) just wouldn't let me get 2nd function, and really jittery.
I went back to the original one I found weeks ago (again, sorry no idea if version, kinda dark grey and grey/blue, ) and that one, along with the screen sensitivity tweak in bsb tweaks makes it a joy to use (admittedly after a few weeks practice/annoyances)
I'll attach the cab of the one I user to this thread when I get home in an hour or so.
Not the phone it seems as I've tried the same one on two different HD2s.
Screen sensitivity might play a part in this but it's definitely an issue with swype. If I use swype, it's very troublesome and very erratic but if I use the standard keyboard, doing something like second function is spot-on 100% of the time.
Also, in notes and drawing apps, although lines that I draw aren't perfectly to my traced line, they aren't anything like swype's crazy lightning like bolts, however, I understand this might be like comparing apples to oranges
Samsamuel, that would be perfect mate, hopefully it can get myself and anyone with similar issues back on track with swype. It is a blue version I use too, but could hopefully be a different release you have.

i have the same issue. i'm not able to type in a number by second function and holding down the button. that's why i guess it's a touchscreen fault.
like you, swype draws more bolds than straight lines. but i have the same problem when playing games like flight commander, where the drawn lines are shown all time. this "zick-zack" lines happen only every few seconds. most time i can draw lines perfectly. this is the part which i cannot understand...
if the screen is faulty, why does it work most time correct?

It's interesting that it happens in games too but I still believe it's Swype at fault in this case and not the touchscreen.
Open up notes and start a drawing, draw really slowly or really quickly, press light and press heavy and the outcome is a far straighter trail (nearly perfect). This could be down to programming but I don't think Swype is programmed to be over sensitive or everyone would have the same problem, there must be another reason.
I have been having the same problem, wasn't all the time but it was like it was spiking a lot when swyping across the keyboard. Installed Keyboard tweak 3.3 with reduced sensitivity and working better than it ever did before but have only been testing for a couple of hours.

Ok, heres the swype i've used successfully on a few different roms. I don't remember where i got it(i got it from xda dev), and i cant find how to see a version number. The lighter coloured, slightly chunkier version is the one i had trouble with.
Version is important because if you read about, it seems there's a bug in one of the swype versions where it can affect passwords if you have a lock on your phone, and i think you have to hard reset to get back in, so i'd hate for that to happen! (I dont use a lock, so i wouldn't know if this is the affected version or not) so please back up your stuff.

[Q] Missing fifth row with numbers on keyboard

Hi,
I am a user of DesireZ for three months, after 2 years with G1, and so far I found it...even depressing (sic!), that the keyboard has no numbers row but only the combination of Fn + key.
How do you find it ? Any extra method of typing IP numbers for example ? or numbers with spaces e.g. +48 123 456 789 ? Please tell I me I get used to use it
Solution for me would be, and this is a question, there is a way to map two programmable keys to "space" and "comma". Possible ?
Cheers,
Whatlogin
I was a migrant from the g1 as well and found it hard to get used to at first. It isn't all that bad though considering you can press the fn key twice in succession and then the top row will work as a numbers row rather than letters. Apart from that, I don't have a solution sorry
I think I remember someone posting an apk in here that would show numbers row at the bottom of a screen as soon as you'd pulled out the keyboard in 'txt writing mode'. Mind you, it was way back in dec or jan... Try search?
I used to have it but it didn't work for me as I seem to remember it required root (I don't have that yet)
See if you find it, good luck
edit: I did find the file in my fone (!)
I take no credit for it nor responsibility whatsoever!!!
Sadly, I do not know who made that either (to credit them) but here it is...
good luck
Wow! TA for replies.
@HAK Devil: I know, but permanent Fn switch the "space" to XT9 and "." to ":"
@wolek76: this is exactly something that could sort out my needs. I should have been looking for G2 rather than DesireZ
Anyway - here is the thread regarding to whole idea and developer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813742
I haven't have a chance to have it working yet - but good to know I am not alone
Regards,
Whatlogin
You should keep your G1 as a backup phone incase the DZ goes wrong and you end up having to send it back for repairs. After 7 months the touchscreen on my old DZ kept sticking in one particular place and HTCs idea of "fixing it" was to kill 1/3 o fthe touchscreen, which was really annoying so after a month of heavy duty legal pressure (thanks to my partner), they coughed up a replacement.
Short version: I wouldn't ditch the rock solid G1 if I were you, it'll one day come in handy.
Hey I tried installing this and it wouldn't show up at all. Enabled it in keyboard settings, fixed permissions; nothing worked.
Has anybody gotten this to work? And have there been any updates on it?
One of the biggest probs I've had with this phone was the 5th number row. You do eventually get used to it, for the most part lol.
What keys did you have in mind for the swap?
Also, I think you may need root for this method to work. Are you rooted?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Even my old Nokia E70 had better keyboard than Vision/Desire Z has. That is so sad :-(

It did not work with me as well, thought when it got updated to 2.3.3 it actually started working no problem. Still there is a problem with Fn and 'shift' keys. I have no root and I haven't change anything to my phone apart from allowing installations from other sources.

Hi,
I am not rooted and as I mentioned - this does not work yet well. Check out also the thread I listed above. It is still being under development.
The two keys I was thinking about was the programmable keys that can be used for apps and so on.
I know I will get used to it. The easiest is type everything and come back to paste special symbols I guess like "ftp19216811://..." ha ha Maybe HTC want to make people stop writing like U2, sk8 is gr8, 4me and use proper language
Cheers!
