Ok How's this for a first post? Some moron managed to knock my 2 week old wizard off the desk while it was charging at work (so not in its case) and has cause a small chip in the screen (screen still works perfectly - just the outter touch panel is damaged). Since no one is owning up to doing it - and my short-sightedness in not taking out insurance on such an expensive phone, I wondered if anyone had any Idea how much T-Mobile would charge to fix this?
I'm assuming it is too late to take out insurance now, so I'm gonna have to shell out for the repair one way or the other - just wondered how much this will set me back.....
Any ideas? Cheers Guys
Oh and no flaming me please - I feel gutted enough as it is!!

You're saying to replace the screen will cost more than £300??
Sorry mate I'm not made of money - that is not a viable solution.

Sorry, but it's your only one!
Hi,
Your house hold insurance should cover it. Either that or take out phone insurance and claim in a few months.
Thanks
B
I am not sure about T-Mobile, but o2 let you take insurance out in the first 2 weeks. Look on the web and if you are too late give them a call..... ask them when you will be billed for the insurance as you cant see it on your first bill and you did ask for it when you bought the phone.
Failing that there are may 3rd party companies that will insure phones/pda's/laptops, google for it and give them a call......

I think you have to replace the whole screen anyway?... maybe not. I dunno.

[email protected]! what an unhelpful post! They are available on ebay for around £120, easy to fit, just be careful the part you buy matches the part number of the original screen - some sellers say the magician screen fits, my supplier says it doesn't.
Richard
Thanks for all your help guys - I did try calling T-Mobile about insurance saying that I though I'd selected it when I bought it online, but they wouldn't budge on letting me insure it after 2 weeks and sounded pretty sceptical from the start :?
I contacted HTC directly and they're quoting £94 to replace the screen and for shipping both ways which I guess is fairly reasonable - especially after the great suggestion of buying a new one at £200+
Just thought I'd update you incase anyone else is as unfortunate as I was.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post contact details for HTC on here - so anyone needing to contact them, just PM me.
Thanks again for the suggestions

That's actually very reasonable considering your warranty remains intact as well. Cheapest price online is now about £95 for the screen alone! HTC will only deal with t-mob/orange branded items from experence though.

anyone know where I can get replacement parts 4 my MDA in the US. sorri to hijack the post but I figure since u are already on the topic of replacment parts I would give it a shot.
I cracked my touchscreen as well. If I can get the part, I think I can do the replacement myself. Anyone know where to get one?
Hi!
I've got crack on my screen- and you wan't belive me, but nothing has happen! I haven't drop this PDA, nothing elese in the pocket, I haven't seat on that pocket etc.. Just opened AND..
Anyway, I've to fix this ASAP
What are my options? Propably it is not covered by warranty so it is pointless (imho) to speak to them.
Who can fix this? How much do I've to pay?
Or, what's the cheapest option now to buy new EXEC?
Any ideas? Or... maybe I can buy just screen and someone can repalce this?
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Chris
Easy enought to swop yourself - screens are approx £130, but give the o2 helpline a call for a fitted quote to see what they offer as this will maintain warranty on the device.
Is it the LCD or digitiser itself that has broken? (Ink splodge or crack? )
Richard
Thanks for your quick reply!
Unfortunatly LCD (touch screen is still working).
Yes, I'll give them a call today.
£130 is NOT THAT MUCH to be honest.

That's the screen cost from Taipei after shipping and tax - o2's price is likely to be higher.
Richard
Thanks!
Yes, I know O2 will be around £185...
Why it is so expensive ? 30% just for the screen...
Is there any chance to fix this under warranity?

They are charging you to *fit* it as well. No chance under warranty methinks but maybe if you bought the insurance now and claimed in 6 - 8 weeks? ;-)

Screen Broken
My Exec screen also cracked (round the back) It was in my pocket and certainly hadn't been dropped and the case was unmarked and the front of the screen was unmarked So I cant see that it had been knocked or crushed. They replaced it free of charge as a 'gesture of goodwill' - Having said that I have the o2 gold insurance so I wasnt going to pay anyway.
Sadly it took them over a month to get me a replacement, despite numerous calls and emails, so at the end of the contract I wont be going back to O2.
I wonder if this screen thing is in fact a manufacturing problem rather than user error. It might be worth saying that 'you've heard that other users have experienced cracked screens...'

A manufacturing fault and just being vulnerable to damage are not the same thing, sadly. They don't usually break unless you leave them in the cold / in your back pocket as you sit down / face open in your pocket with your keys etc etc. If the digitiser stops working on loads of units with no intervention - that's a manufacturing fault, but lots of people breaking the LCD's? might be easily done - but ultimatley their own fault either by carelessness or accident. My advice - buy a case!
Richard
( who puts all his pda's in his back pocket and sits down on them with his fat ass with no issues so far )
My exec was in O2 for a repair for bloody 8 weeks !!! (it arrived today...).
I had pleased them, mail and phone-bomb them, threatened them to death and court, but they still have pissed on me from the high...
So, my conclusion > NO FING WAY that I`ll give my Exec to O2 again....
Not speaking about that 185 pounds they wanted BEFORE they repaired it (like second week they had it)...
8 weeks?
Paying 185 quid for repair and wait 8 weeks???
Wow, thanks for that post...
Anyway, thank you for all your replys- I've got one more question.. can some1 give an email address to Service dept please? I've tried yesterday to call them but line was busy (
Thank you for your support!
Cheers!
Chris
I've also had this problem - the screen crack looks to me as though it's at the point which gets stressed the most when the screen is flipped around during opening. The warranty expressly excludes cracked LCDs. Which has to give you a clue...
My advice - if you ever buy one do it on a credit card with insurance which covers it. Mine is paying for the repair.
Hi Alec,
I've got this EXEC as a upgrade so they just charged my account (direct debit). Also, I've got just HSBC CC and there is no inssurance.
The other thing is- sales agent FORGOT to add this £5 insurance to my account!!! Also, he should change my tarif- which wasn't done
So I'm very upset with o2 sales agents
My next contract will be propably with T-MOBILE (I'm half German so... )
Cheers!

Richard,
I remeber agent's name - Nick. His extension number was 21SOMETHING AFIK Do they record every call? For haw long do they keep them?
Anyway, is too late...
Soo, i'm ready to pay this £185- but I'd like to mek sure that this screen fill be fixed withn let say 1-2 weeks MAX!
Thanks anyway...
Chris
Dunno how long they keep the records, but if he did the upgrade his name and the time will be on the notes for your account as he'll want the commision - at least ask operator X who did the upgrade and what extension (nicely) than ask operator Y to speak to 'Nicks' supervisor as he didn't add the insurance you asked for - it may even be detailed in the notes anyway as I would think they get commision for that as well.
Richard
DAMN,..I GOT THE SAME PROBLEM!!
I always carried my device very carefull. Yesterday I opened the device and the screen was cracked. nothing on the outside, only the screen had a crack and is useless now. I had to send it to T-Mobile since my garentee is one year (sorry for the bad english)
Very strange,.. is seems like the screen can crack without bumping it to something.
Arjan
Arjan,
I'm so sorry to hear this... And as far I know they wan't fix this under warranity Anyway, TRY!
Also, can you please ask them how much they are going to charge you and let me know?
Many thanks and goodl luck with this one!
Cheers!
Well,.
I phoned up T-mobile NL. and they said I might be under warrenty, since the device is less than one year old. The sent me an enveloppe for the device to sent back. So I did yesterday, including the ticket I got when I bought the device.
I would take 10 days (they said) to fix it and sent back. If it woudn't fall under warrenty the device would be sent back fixed with a bill...
I really hope it will be fixed without having to pay. I was really carefull with it...
Arjan
Hmm, I'm not that careful- I've got some scratches...
Anyway, it was VERY expensive weekend (I had to cancel my trip Germany- Lufthansa, only taxes refunded, canceled car hire reservation, broken screen in my PDA, ALMOST crashed my mondeo, some other unplaned expenses) so 200 more is not a big deal
M8, hopefuly they will fix your PDA for free
let me know please!
Cheers!
Chris
I understand guys..what u all are going thru..my screen has broken not once but twice..n like some of u guys mentioned i had never put any stress on my device...still it broke..for the first change, i had to pay( i fought with imate management but they didnt do anything..i have a post about our conversations) but second time, i just sent them a single email and they changed my screen for free.
Too b honest, i feel imate jasjar have some design issues...just like a blot appearing on keypads(extreme top left n right side) because the cushion padding is not effective.
What ill suggest, we should get together and email these people..however iknow that wont have much effect but still..it might have some effect..
Don't know if this has been posted before (did a search for battery replacement didn't find any article abt it), just surfing the net trying to find battery for my Tilt and found those information about the Wing, thought to share with all Wing users.

thanks for the info its time to get me a new battery
Funny thing is, just a couple weeks ago out of no where and not prompted by me at all, Tmobile sent me a new battery for my Wing. It has a small bend in the corner but it seems usable. I don't see myself using it for quite some time as my battery now is perfect but i guess I have a backup whenever I need it!
i didn't receive a battery maybe mine isn't a dynapack, too lazy to get up and look.
even though this isn't rom related it is very important information. I would like to know what date and how to tell if your pack is a dynapack though.

If you just open your case it says at the top of the battery. So, how do you go about getting a replacement battery? Call Tmobile and complain about my battery overheating?
Here is my battery and I still haven't received a replacement. My phone has never even been left in the heat or anything. It expanded to more than double its original size and broke the back cover to where I had to purchase a new cover. Should I be able to contact them about a new one cuz I've heard of ppl trying that and T-Mobile plays dumb about it.
EDIT: I also only use the supplied charger and usb cable.

I called tmobile last night, and said my battery was overheating, and that I saw online there was a recall on the dynapack batteries. After being transferred to about 6 different people, I was finally transferred to HTC's support number. Unfortunately, it was closed, so I plan on calling today and seeing what they say. From what I understand, they know about this issue, so they should just end out a new one. I'll report back after I call.

Good deal man hopefully they actually have customer service unlike t mobile. I dont use that battery anymore once it expanded and broke the back cover and the actual phone where it holds the back cover. So I had to use the warranty and im on my second one now. After taking it out it kept expanding more and more and is now about 3/4 of an inch thick. The cell inside is like a huge bubble!

Well, just got off the phone with tmobile, and they sent me to HTC's support. They checked the serial number and it was outside the warranty so they said they couldn't do anything for me. They suggested to purchase a new battery. I'm at work, so I really didn't have time to get into it with them, and I would think if I spoke with a supervisor and told them they didn't want a lawsuit, they should replace it. Either way, no luck so far, but I might call back later after work.

Yeah I don't get it either....I guess I'm going to have to call and speak with a manager and let em have it. It's just a hassle though.
Dude i've never called T-Mobile without it being a hassle. Of course I never WANTED to stay on the phone for an hour, but I think i've been on the phone AT LEAST 40 minutes the 3-4 times i've had to call them. You would think they get paid to transfer. It's all they do, lol. I read somewhere on here (and other places) that you could get the wing for like $100 with a "Windows Mobile" promotional code. I called and spoke to a customer service rep. about it and she said the code was accepted. It worked. I said what plan I wanted and that I wanted unlimited text/data. She made it happen and I got my phone a few days later. I waited a few days and then called back to make sure I got the deal I said I was going to get. Basically every person I spoke to said they are "sorry" that it happened and whatever else. So instead of me paying between $150-200 to get the phone + activate it, I had to pay like $400-450 regular price. A big difference, especially when you're trying to save for a down payment on a new car. So I had to send it back and cancel the service. And I was forced to pay like a $50-55 bill when I wanted to re-open my account this time around a month or so ago. And I only used the phone for like 2 days at that time too! It was a big hassle.

Yeah, they are still doing it. I would call immediately. Eventually, they will transfer you to HTC's service. THey have a way of checking the purchase date from the serial number on your phone. BTW, you will have to call from another phone....but I would do it now before it's out of warranty.
don't ask me how it happened, i'm just telling you that you can't rely on the HD2 drop test video on youtube... if someone knows a good place that will make my hd2 look like a new one again, please tell me!
Holy crap!!
Good luck on finding a new housing and screen. Might as well chalk this up as stupid/careless/accident and just get a new one.
pitchbend your not the only one mine was picked up by UPS yesterday afternoon and is off to HTC for repair.
When I first phoned the helpdesk hadn't even received the price list off the service centre. I had to phone them up the next day and then wait for Lee to call me back
Spares are like rocking horse crap at the moment and the only people that seem to have them are HTC's service centres.
I've been quoted £140 luckily the insurance will pay

Have you called HTC? Should be under warrenty? Not many other options...good luck.
Somehow I don't think throwing your phone off the ground will be covered by warranty!
Either pay the repair costs, or fork out for a new one I'm afraid.
I suppose you could buy a new one - and keep that one for 3 months until spares are available... then eBay it!
Do you people not have insurance on this phone?
Really, at £550 a pop, I would assume insurance would be a VERY sensible option.
And how the hell did you smash the bottom of that screen in?! Looks like someone stood on it.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never purchase any insurance for any of my phones. The last phone I've had was a $700 Diamond when it first came out. I check to make sure I have my phone on me at all time. NO. MATTER. WHAT. I've grown to the point where I'm very paranoid when I step out of my car and didn't feel the phone in my pocket. Everywhere I go, I make sure the phone is in a secure spot (ie, carrying case) if not, I will make sure it's in an enclosed pocket (front pants pocket). Don't ever put your phone on your shirt pocket or anywhere with an opening because when you bend over to pick up something...BAM!! Just simple reminders that many tend to overlook. It's just a higher level of awareness when you spend an upward of $700-$1000 for a phone.
hi,
first of all a big 'sorry you', i know how it feels when a brand new toy dies.... i think spareparts are not available at this early time after release. and the glas is maby a part of the display itself wich makes it expesive. so best will be to send to htc for repair.

to say that must be heartbreaking has to be the understatement of the year... lots of dude's don't bother with phone insurance but have you thought about claiming of your house and contents? If you have it the excess fee will surely be less than the cost of outright replacement...

Got mine insured through 'Supercover' - £9.99 per month covers my HD, and the wife and brother in law's iphones. Think (for the gadget mad) they do a 5 gadget cover for £14.99.
Feel your pain - my HD was replaced within 3 days of getting it thanks to an unzipped pocket.
Good luck with it!
EDIT - here's their link if it's any use

EDIT - the wife has suitably informed me that Supercover now do the underwriting, and you need to go through a broker. Link attached

while surfing the net im stumble upon this honkong guy , i dont know everything about them, and never bougth something from them. but they offer the frontglas with the touchscreen, so if someone is in need for it, this may help.
mad.
I've found a replacement screen on eBay for $68 but have no idea how to replace it. I don't see any disassembly of the screen on any of the teardown pics. Any help would be much appreciated.
Insurance thru tmo. Better off getting brand new out the box. Just my thought.
[G2/HTC Vision]
Yeah, that would be ideal but I bought the phone used. No insurance. Also everything, including the touchscreen, works perfectly fine still. The glass is just cracked.

You can call T-Mo, have them add the premium insurance, and then call back in a couple days and have them give you a replacement under the plan for $130.
EDIT: Make sure to get confirmation on this before you go through.
Of course, $68 is much better than $130. This link to a Desire Z teardown shows the top panel being taken apart (about 2/3 of the way down the page). It's a hell of a process; one that might leave you with more than just a screen issue if something were to go wrong.
Pix please and also what link are r u looking at? $68 seems to cheap. Just wanna make sure you dont end up with a mytouch or hero screen
Wow, thanks for your help so far guys. Sorry about the links, it wouldnt let me post a normal link since Im a new user, so just cut and paste.
Here is a link to the replacement screen I found on eBay, its actually $58:

thats pretty bad on the phone but yes that is the right screen.
You cracked the touch screen part not the lcd which would of cost more.
Good luck with replacing it. Idk how good you are at this stuff but for me it doesnt look to hard just make sure you have all the right tools.
and @ EfemaN
thanks for the link. and has anyone looked to see if the led has multi- color?
i don't think you can add insurance now. only at the time you bought the phone.
actually when i bought, they added insurance w/o telling me. i found it later and canceled cuz it's 6.99/mo and deductible is 130. i thought 130 is way too much.
how much will HTC charge you? around 200?
HTC wont even repair them yet, that is the worst part. Below is the email I got from HTC customer service.
We apologize for any issues you are experiencing with your device and would be happy to assist. Unfortunately, we are not currently supporting this device for repair. We will have RMA options available soon, but do not have an ETA on when this will take effect. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Customer Care at 1.888.356.2375.
I was able to remove and re-add insurance back over the last year or so that I had my Blackberry. There's no harm in just calling to ask.
I just called T-Mobile to have a new G2 sent (having radio issues), and during the usual agreement word-for-word reading, the rep mentioned the "if we find that you screwed up your phone" fee of.. I believe she said around $280, and if I remember correctly, it was $130 for the Blackberry. That $68 screen seems a little more attractive now...
I called and tried to add insurance to my G2 today. T-Mobile said I had the phone more than 15 days and could not add it :-(
They did say that there is a year warranty on the phone that covers defects, but not breaks caused by consumer.
I also asked if they have an open enrollment period like some phone insurance companies do and they said that they didn't.
The DID however say that if I went to a T-Mobile store and got any repairs or exchanges done, I would be able to add insurance.
FYI my G2 is in perfect condition. Was just wanting to know if I could add it. Wish I would have when I had the chance.
Just so you guys are aware..
Insurance can be added only during an open enrollment period - purchase of a new phone or a warranty exchange. More or less, whenever T-mobile gives you a phone, you have 14 days to add it to the line.
That being said, the qualifying event that enables you to add insurance to your line doesn't necessarily have to cover the phone that was purchased or exchanged. The insurance will actually follow the sim card (iphone excluded) so that if you put your sim card into another device, that is actually the device that is currently covered.
Now, if you have a phone that can't receive a signal (totally inoperable as a phone) you might run into some difficulties actually making the claim. While it is technically policy, they would certainly prefer to see some usage on the phone you're trying to make a claim on. Depends on who you talk to, really.
Figured I would share. Toodles.

why dont you sim unlock your phone and see if you cant get signal, get your replacement device, which would be covered as a defect, and then add insurance to that one. I prefer sprints insurance, they will even let you claim a phone you got used from ebay/cl or whatever. Also, you might want to look into a third party insurance provider, as asurion is who covers it through every carrier anyway. They will always just tell you to call them, wont make anything easier.
Does anyone have a better tear down link than this?: tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
This assumes that the 1/2 that the screen is attached to is separated from the other 1/2 of the phone. I ordered a new digitizer and am just waiting for it to arrive. I was quoted $50 labor from a local shop here in NYC. I ordered the part for $36.
good luck with this man
it really sucks to have almost no good guides on how to take apart a phone
i did a screen replacement with my old vibrant
it was terrible
