Hi all.
I hacked the registry as suggested to get two different icons when under Edge coverage opposed to standard GPRS but my S200 always shows the G icon, never the E icon. Since at the moment I am sitting at about 2 miles from the Vodafone UK headquarters in Newbury I really doubt they haven't got Edge in their hometown, so something must be wrong with my phone or this hack is not working.
Is there anyone who has used this registry edit successfully? If so can you please specify if you are using Vodafone in the UK?
Thanks.

Do Vodafone support Edge?
Orange do but it only tends to be where they don't have 3G.
And yes I get G and E where appropriate.
Well since the Vodafone phone catalogue mentions when a phone supports Edge I assume that their GSM network has Edge capabilities.... It could be that they have not deployed it where there is 3G coverage but it seems strange that I have never been in a Edge area while driving around south England....
Here in the Netherlands is it Telfort that support EDGE and is the only one.
Vodafone support GPRS and UMTS here.
I've do the registry hack this morning and it works! I get the E at the place there was before a G.
I've tested my device it works on EDGE or GPRS:
My girlfriend has an Ipaq and a Samsun D500 with T-Mobile GPRS (supports only GPRS); mine is many quicker! A knowledge has a T-Mobile MDA Vario (with GPRS) and last week we have tested mine Qtek S200 and his MDA VARIO and mine was quicker!
I don't think Vodafone support EDGE anywhere in the continent. They support 3G (UMTS) only as far as I know.
I edited my registry to show an EDGE Icon, too...
And I almost forgot about it, because in germany no operator seems to support EDGE anywhere..
But I was in France just a week ago and there it showed that EDGE Icon instead of the G...
But I didn't test Edge, because I had a feeling that it would be to expensive..
I wouln'd worry... EDGE seems to be a technology that won't come up very far... 3G will overrun it, I think.
i thought only orange support EDGE? Anyway, the ONLY time i have ever had the "e" icon appear is on about a 2 mile length of track on the train back and forth to work in london. i live in west kent? i did a speed test and got about 60kbit/sec as apposed to the usual 38(ish)kbit/sec

after updating my jamin with the latest rom the network icon now shows "E" instead of "G" although I dont have EDGE technology and I use GPRS. I successfully made a GPRS connection and after disconnecting it shows "G" for a while then turns back to "E"!!!! anyone experience the same problem!?
this is not a problem. If your network is able to work with Edge, it will appear "E" and than when you connect it will appera "G" (because your device don´t have EDGE). This icon it represents what your network is able to offer.
the problem is; I KNOW THAT MY PROVIDER DOESNT HAVE EDGE!!!

who is your provider? as far as i know all providers in the use who is capable of using this phone on thier network is edge capable. outside of the small mom and pops. cingular/tmobile/cellularone are all edge capable.
sorry just read this thread over at hf.
I've had this . It momenterily shows the E and then reverts back to G. I am with Orange UK and I am in a Strong 3G network cell. I know that Orange are suposed to running edge out to areas with no 3G but not sure when.
I can only assume that it is picking up an edge signal from somewhere. To tell you the truth I wish I saw the E all the time . That would at least give me edge speeds .
This is defo a problem (Well doesn't hinder the phone). I was using my Jamin with copilot which was connected the whole time to Copilot Live via a GPRS connection. If I come out of the copilot screen and initiat a call the G symbol changes to an E . It then reverts back to a G when the call finishes.
Maybe your provider is doing some EDGE testing?
Hi,
I live in Ottawa, Canada and work in NYC. I just got my Trinity from Superiorgadgets.com and I am in love with it. It is the black colored one and it is fantastic. One thing I noticed in the book is when I am in an Edge area the E sign will be on and when I am in GPRS area, the G sign will be and same with 3G when in NY but the question is, since I am using my Cingular sim card and roaming in Canada, there is only a G sign on my screen to indicate it is not Edge but I know Rogers and Fido use Edge unless they lie and this is not weird up in Freezing land. Can anyone shed any light on whether the E sign is activated on the Trinity and 3G not U is the indicator for 3G. I will know soon when I return to NYC for the 3G sign.
Best regards,
Gilbert
Come on guys, no comments

according to the manual the E sign is active...to be honest maybe the roaming rights does not allow use of the EDGE network....cause i am in Ottawa, and although i have a prophet i get an E sign...
Hi,
I live in a Edge area, and i've no E icon.
i thought i have to tweak the registry to enable it, but it is already activated.
At home, with "G" icon, the Trinity download speed: ~110kb/s (is it really a GPRS connection?)
at the same place, my Magician in GPRS: ~56kb/s.
The UMTS "3G" icon works, and download speed ~300kb/s.
I'm waiting for HSDPA ;]
download speed tested with:

Hi, thanks for this. Just wondering if you are using a local sim card for the prophet or a sim card from the US? I am using a Cingular sim card.
Best regards,
Gilbert

my bad i thought it was implied that i was using a local sim card...yeah my provider is Rogers, and i am using a rogers SIM card...im in the 613 area code, but go home frequently which is in the 514 area code. Never have a problem with losing the E symbol...and sometimes based on speed tests i get up to around 200kbps..its pretty sweet..but of course its not as sweet as using my wifi connection (around 1500kbps)...when HSDPA comes in (completely...just in Torontoish right now) i will be as happy as a clam

I would find it really strange if two operators allowed standard GPRS roaming and not EDGE roaming. Using my limited knowledge of GSM I'd say that even from a pure technical point of view it would only be additional headache (if at all possible).
Hi,
I have bought an uses hw6915 device, which works fine, except for EDGE. I´m connecting to web.vodafone.de (Germany) without any problems while in GPRS. As soon as I´m approaching an EDGE network and the [E] appears, the data transfer is stopped, server can´t be reached but the device is logged into the EDGE network.
Phone works in EDGE network as long as I´m not connected to APN.
Does anyone has a clue? Could the device defective or is it a strange configuration problem?
Is there a way to swith off EDGE in registry?

Perhaps the carrier that runs that EDGE enabled tower doesn't have a data roaming agreement with Vodafone. That would cause you to become disconnected once you hit that EDGE tower.
Just an idea, as I'm not sure how data roaming agreements work in Europe.
EDGE is just an extension to GPRS. and only between both supporting radio's (both network and client device). If you dont see the E for EDGE coverage, chances are you just aint in range of an EDGE enabled transmitter. Most countries that have 3G wont bother using EDGE, orange in the UK say that EDGE is only really used as a fall back when you are out of 3G range.
I dont know of any way to force EDGE use, and if there is Id like to hear it! GPRS sucks!
It was a technical error. HP replaced the mainboard, now it works great...
HI Everyone:
I just got my HTC P3650 Cruise and have problems connectiong to the regular Edge network with AT&T. I don't have 3G or HSDPA in the location that I'm at and it take a long time to search and lock in on the network. It is also very slow. I have a Tilt and it works perfect in Edge and 3G.
when I travel and go into a 3G/HSDPA area, the phone works like it is on broadband. I searches and receives the AT&T network instantly like my tilt and works without problems. It does not have a strong signal when it gets between buildings and inside concrete structures. My tilt has a lot better reception.
Is anyone having this same problem? Do you know of any setting that will correct this condition. I already changed the band setting from auto to specific for AT&T. It does not make a difference.
I have the HTC branded TyTn II. My problem is not exactly as yours but something similar. My TyTn II on an edge connection barely gets a download speed of 100 kbs. When I put the same SIM in my old HTC branded Touch I can occassionally peak at 200 kbs. So the edge speed on my TyTn II is usually half of what I can get on my Touch.
Obviously this is not an operator related problem as I am using the same SIM Card between the two devices. I don't have 3G in my country and the best is EDGE what I can get. Any suggestions or similar experiences would love to hear.
Edge Problems
I just flashed the radio 1.64.08.21 and it does not seem to make any difference on the network. I have not tried it in a 3G r HSPDA network yet.
Anyone else having problems connecting with the Polaris? When I change sims and putit into my tilt it works on all networks and flies. I don't know if AT&T is doing something to enhnace the phone on their network with all their applications. The only thing different is that I use a proxy server on the tilt.
Just wondering if anyone else has an HD2 on Orange. I live in Leeds and no mater where I am in the city, I can not get HSDPA coverage.
Would anyone have any ideas? Am I being a dope and missing something obvious?
Note, yes the Orange web site states that I should be able to get it where I am.
You can always check in the registry if the icon is set to be On but it should be by default..
Go to settings -> all settings -> connections -> advanced network
Make sure that both HSDPA and HSUPA are enabled
Thanks for the suggestion, but that was enabled. The icon is ok.
Speed is still poor! Hmmm odd one as on T-Mobile, HSDPA icon showed and I got great speed.
Crappy Orange bahh
Cheers
I take it your orange is pay as you go? I don't know if this anything to go by but I WAS with Orange a few months back, I had a 3g phone and all HSDPA was enabled. However..I was just getting normal signal. where my friend was on orange aswell and he was getting 3g standing right next to me. But this was the difference...
Myself = Pay As You Go = No 3G
Friend = Contract On Orange = Constant 3G.
I don't know if Orange limit there 3g to contract customers however now i'm on o2 Text and Web Tarrif (Pay and Go) getting 3g and H signals now. o2 has better coverage in my opinion.
Hope this helps.
My friend who is also on Orange (but has a HTC Hero) has just recently had loads of problems with her 3g signal being non existent. As far as she could ascertain (through calls to Orange helpline) it is Orange that is having technical issues with its 3g/HSDPA infrastructure. She lives in Halifax by the way.
