Hi,
I live in Ottawa, Canada and work in NYC. I just got my Trinity from Superiorgadgets.com and I am in love with it. It is the black colored one and it is fantastic. One thing I noticed in the book is when I am in an Edge area the E sign will be on and when I am in GPRS area, the G sign will be and same with 3G when in NY but the question is, since I am using my Cingular sim card and roaming in Canada, there is only a G sign on my screen to indicate it is not Edge but I know Rogers and Fido use Edge unless they lie and this is not weird up in Freezing land. Can anyone shed any light on whether the E sign is activated on the Trinity and 3G not U is the indicator for 3G. I will know soon when I return to NYC for the 3G sign.
Best regards,
Gilbert

according to the manual the E sign is active...to be honest maybe the roaming rights does not allow use of the EDGE network....cause i am in Ottawa, and although i have a prophet i get an E sign...
Hi,
I live in a Edge area, and i've no E icon.
i thought i have to tweak the registry to enable it, but it is already activated.
At home, with "G" icon, the Trinity download speed: ~110kb/s (is it really a GPRS connection?)
at the same place, my Magician in GPRS: ~56kb/s.
The UMTS "3G" icon works, and download speed ~300kb/s.
I'm waiting for HSDPA ;]
download speed tested with:

Hi, thanks for this. Just wondering if you are using a local sim card for the prophet or a sim card from the US? I am using a Cingular sim card.

my bad i thought it was implied that i was using a local sim card...yeah my provider is Rogers, and i am using a rogers SIM card...im in the 613 area code, but go home frequently which is in the 514 area code. Never have a problem with losing the E symbol...and sometimes based on speed tests i get up to around 200kbps..its pretty sweet..but of course its not as sweet as using my wifi connection (around 1500kbps)...when HSDPA comes in (completely...just in Torontoish right now) i will be as happy as a clam

I would find it really strange if two operators allowed standard GPRS roaming and not EDGE roaming. Using my limited knowledge of GSM I'd say that even from a pure technical point of view it would only be additional headache (if at all possible).

after updating my jamin with the latest rom the network icon now shows "E" instead of "G" although I dont have EDGE technology and I use GPRS. I successfully made a GPRS connection and after disconnecting it shows "G" for a while then turns back to "E"!!!! anyone experience the same problem!?
this is not a problem. If your network is able to work with Edge, it will appear "E" and than when you connect it will appera "G" (because your device don´t have EDGE). This icon it represents what your network is able to offer.
the problem is; I KNOW THAT MY PROVIDER DOESNT HAVE EDGE!!!

who is your provider? as far as i know all providers in the use who is capable of using this phone on thier network is edge capable. outside of the small mom and pops. cingular/tmobile/cellularone are all edge capable.
sorry just read this thread over at hf.
I've had this . It momenterily shows the E and then reverts back to G. I am with Orange UK and I am in a Strong 3G network cell. I know that Orange are suposed to running edge out to areas with no 3G but not sure when.
I can only assume that it is picking up an edge signal from somewhere. To tell you the truth I wish I saw the E all the time . That would at least give me edge speeds .
This is defo a problem (Well doesn't hinder the phone). I was using my Jamin with copilot which was connected the whole time to Copilot Live via a GPRS connection. If I come out of the copilot screen and initiat a call the G symbol changes to an E . It then reverts back to a G when the call finishes.
Maybe your provider is doing some EDGE testing?
Hi everyone,
It's my first post here - most likely not to be my last. Oh, and i know i spelt HSDPA wrong in the title!
I very very recently (yesterday in fact) managed to get hold of my T-Mobile Hermes (one of the .37 batch) and am having no problems whatsoever with the phone, the only problem i am having is getting any web download speeds faster than around 40kbps?
I phoned T-Mobile yesterday and after being on hold twice and explaining myself many times i think i got HSDPA enabled as the lady (who was very nice) said she promises it has been enabled for me. I tried half hour later and sure enough, i used www.dslreports.com/mspeed and could now download at around 800kbps - perfect! Unfortunately i tried again this morning and it says 40kbps again
Is there any way to tell whether HSDPA has been enabled on my phone before i call T-Mobile again? Does HSDPA just run over 3G? I haven't got a brilliant signal where i am - usually 1 or 2 bars, could this be what is affecting my download speed? I need some help!
Just realised i have spelt HSDPA wrong in the thread title - never mind! Can anyone help?
Have you read this dude?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276154&page=5
Theres a couple of files you can check you have i believe, also the Fit4cat program is worth downloading.
40kbps is GPRS data speed. Even without HSDPA you should get 300kbps on UMTS.
Your phone will show a U or a G depending on which network you are on.
It shows a "G" all the time in a little white block next to the signal bar, and sometimes the signal bar shows an antenna and sometimes a "G" also - does that mean when im on the "G" ill be on HSDPA and when im on the antenna (if i cant get 3G) ill be on GPRS 40kbps?
If so that makes a lot of sense as the signal is not brilliant round here, i went shopping in a much bigger town this afternoon and tested again -> full signal and downloading at around 1200kbps! Obviously it is enabled, think its just down to my signal....
Does that sound about right?
RTFM, the G is for GSM ie data will be GPRS.
You will either have a 3G or U depending on what ROM you're running for 3G/UMTS/HSDPA .
I'll be honest i only got half way through the quick start guide before i started playing with it. So, if my phone is always on "G" i'll assume i need to try and unlock it using the fit4cat thing? As T-Mobile have said they have enabled HSDPA on my account?
How did i get 1200kbps on GPRS by the way? It definately said "G" when i was connected and did the speed test...?!
I just ran the fit4cat Hermes tweaker and still no luck, it only connects to "G" rather than "3G", 3G is apparently available in this area so why does it only connect to G? Im confused and would really appreciate some advice...
Well if you probably didn't notice the U (or whatever) when you got 1mbps once it. This means that HSDPA is enabled on your phone and SIM.
The fit4cat tweaker only (dis)enables HSDPA but that isn't an issue because even without HSDPA you would be getting UMTS speeds.
One thing you could try is. Go to Start->Settings->Phone->Band set GSM/UTMS to GSM900+1800 + UMTS2100
You could also try a manual search for networks from Start->Settings->Phone->Networks->Find Network
Finally you can also disable GSM totaly using network type in the band selection and see if you get a steady 3G signal.
Thanks for your suggestions, here are my findings:

Good point, i have a long drive home tonight so will check when going through built up areas to see if it connects to 3G or U then.

Did this also, it pops up with the message "Registering on the network" and disappears and thats it, nothing happens.

I cannot find an option to disable GSM in the Band tab, i have the following:
Select your network type.
__Auto
__GSM
Select your GSM/UMTS band.
__GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
__GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
and thats about it. Cannot find anything that would let me not use GSM whatsoever? I appreciate your help so far
It may be the case that your reception for 3G just isnt adequate enough to work where you live, O2 states there is reception in the area where i live but i only tend to get UMTS upstairs....just one of those things....here at uni i get FULL UMTS reception anywhere.

In the dopod ROM it has a WCDMA option too. No big deal !
Seting the band was just so that the phone doesn't bother looking for bands that are not available in this country. To try and encourage it to check the correct UMTS band more quickly.
My suggestion to use find network (you need to select manual search) in Networks wasn't too helpful anyway as it doesn't list the band. So no use unless you can disable GSM.
Of course you may have got a spurious speed test result. How old is your SIM? It needs to be a USIM
Yes firstly is your SIM card a USIM....or is it a SIM card from an old handset?? I think youve already said you have had the 'U' appear on your TyTN at some point.....so again im going with the assumption you just dont have adequate UMTS reception for it to work....hence why you are only seeing 'G'.
So, funny story...
It seems where i was over the weekend (girlfriends) is borderline, so as mentioned aboved i can get 3G upstairs but not downstairs - i decided to drive around and got 3G all over the place...the best news is i get 2/3 bars of 3G at home too!
Problem solved, im an idiot - but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask right?

hey guys im using a jasjar with WM6 (and have tried with others) newest release and even all the WM5 releases. I have my 3G simcard from my shop now. I have configured the phone for GPRS/3G using
Add line: GPRS,3G
wap.cingular
[email protected]
CINGULAR1
Works like a charm .... for GPRS my phone wont display 3G no matter what.
I live in NJ and tried multiple areas such as elizabeth and middlesex. I have also tried manhattan and still no go. I spoke to customer service and had them re provision everything and still NO!
Then some clown says that the only phones that go on the 3G network are firmware locked versions of cingular phones.
now i have 2 universal same issues one is jasjar on is Qtek9000 and i have seen other cingular USA customers on the forums using a universal and on 3g...
whats wrong? its not even letting me see it much less connect to it all i see is "G"
ok after much findings and a lot of searches the jasjar has 2100 while cingular is using 850/1900.
will cingular every use 2100 or is some mod to the radio rom possible? prob not but...
So can anyone advise if its possible to mod the radio rom to make the jasjar support 1900 UTMS?
or is this a hardware limitation?
if same hardware i don't see why it wouldn't be possible
i mean the phone does connect to 1900 for other services in USA why couldn't you hack the radio rom?
Same problem here. I can't understand why there is not a radio hack. What a waste of a good phone.

You might already be connected and you don't know. From what I know, the WM6 can't show the 3G icon, it always show G icon even when connected to 3G.
Have you read this thread and tried V2 of the 3G Icon? THREAD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293375
Please let me know if it works on yours. I don't have 3G SIM, but I do have Cingular. Thanks.
You cannot simply do a "radio hack" as that would be like putting a Dodge engine in a Chevy vehicle its just not that simple. Or a square box in a circular hole.
Also I believe the main reason is due to Cing/T Mo have no ownership in the 2Ghz spectrum (Sprint does though). T Mobile will be using the 1700 area for their 3G service which is brilliant as we will not have to colliding networks around the same specturm. However this begs the question on what will happen with unlocked 3G phones in the future.

The question is since the universal has 1900 and 2100 band, is umts being pushed over the 2100 band via the os or radio rom or even a setting in the registry. Or is this a hardware setting only.

Hi, i currently live in toronto, canada, and i use rogers as my provider. when i put my sim card (from rogers) and turn on the phone, the phone says that it the network cannot find something (provider i think), and i should update my software. it then takes me to the "network connections" where i choose my country, and my provider. i notice that Canada is not in that drop down box. can someone please tell me how i can go about choosing Canada, or do i have to flash with a modded firmware instead of an original firmware? please answer!

Same thing happened here, I live in Brazil and it is not in the drop down list. I just choose dismiss (or something like that) as soon as the first message appears, followed by "do now show message again" (or smth like that).
Been using the phone without any problems so far.
oh yea? ok t hats cool. do you think you can help me out then..
i dont understand what 3G EDGE GPRS are.. like because im with the provider, i do not want to be charged more than just calling people.
when i plug in my sim card, do you know what is supposed to be displayed on the top of the dopod, near the Signal strength?
and could you tell me what each of those three mean? thankss

Answer:
3G-Video calling using the secondary camera (which we can't use yet in canada)
EDGE- Basically high speed data transfer (since you are with rogers, I believe there are data plans that support that feature)
GPRS-Never use it, cuz it charges on your airtime using the towers

You can call Rogers and tell them you don't want any data services, then you should see a X icon right beside your signal strength level...
Ok when i put it in it says:
Network Wizard
Your current operator (30272) is not supported. You should obtain an update from your device vendor.
Would you like to select another network provider?
I want to put canada in it.. if anyone knows how to do it please post!!

Agreed. I disabled all data way back when I had a regular phone. I kept getting random data charges when I never loaded my browser so I just disabled it. Anyway, I get the 3G logo, however, I haven't tested out the transfer rates or anything like that. I don't know if you can boost the signal or anything, I manage to make calls (which are surprisingly perfectly clear) with 1 bar.
I get the Edge logo on my phone in vancouver. I do know that they charge for Edge usage here and there was a big promo for unlimited Edge usage for about $40 bucks per month posted on craigslist.com. I know 3G network has been built, but probably a few good years before it's affordable to use.
Hi, i'm from Canada, PQ, Montreal and another mate in this forum from Canada, Vancouver is having the same problem.
For the first 10-20secs after the X1i has been booted succesfully. We get the G status icon(GPRS signal) in the corner and get 2-3bars of signal, during these times, we can call/text or receive calls. After this, the G signal will be replaced by E signal (Edge), this is when i cannot make any calls nor receive any calls nor send any message. I tried this while i was in the streets in a open sky place. I tried my friend's phone and i had FULL SIGNAL (its an nokia 5800 xpress) , i tried my other phone, nokia n95 8gb, i get sky rocketing signal as well.
So the only way to call me, is to keep on trying , hoping i get GPRS status. I have tested my mom's sim card prepaid , to see if it relates to 3G internet or something , still no luck. Anyone from canada having problems?? I'm with rogers. They use 850mhz/1850mhz , i have disabled HSPDA and seletected these two bands, still no luck .... I cannot update the radio rom because its locked ....
Please help =(
perhaps we might have to unlock the phone with Fido to use voice calls on edge? i'm having the same problem. ;(
Perhaps you have to call fido to disable EDGE and use GPRS only ... i'm gonna have to refund my x1 =(
Initially, Fido worked basically with 1900MHz but since the acquisition of Fido by Rogers in 2004, Rogers integrated the networks extending coverage thru 850MHz...
Better get the X1a or change provider
I live in sweden and I also have problem with my signal. it just disapears from time to time.
Same problem here on the other side of the world; in Abu Dhabi. Sometime the signal is completely lost!
