Wizard or Universal.. I can't decide! - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi I'm thinking of getting a new pda/phone but I'm not wure which one to go for... the Universal is very tempting but it's size puts me off a bit... where as the wizard seems ideal in size but I have read several post about how multitasking is difficult because the unit is slow. Any thoughts?

then go with the new TyTn. Its the size of the Wizard with the power almost the same with the Universal. The only thing that is not there is the VGA screen. Other than that, the TyTN has it all, 3G tri-band, decent 2MP camera, etc. Just read about it to make sure its what you look for.

I'm from the UK, is it available here?

http://www.europe.htc.com/products/
Absolutely. Its launched first in Europe, and ppl in the US asked the same question, is it available in the US? =)

Orange do it on their website for 149.99 in the UK, it is known as the SPV 3100.

I have both. For phoning, the Wizard is FAR better. The same stands for the battery life. If you plan to do a LOT of Web browsing (where VGA is important), then, go for the Universal. Otherwise, get the Wizard.
If I were you, I'd get the Hermes though.

Problem with i-Mate Jam?

Please share the most annoying thing that you don't like about your i-Mate, O2 Mini or something similar to it.
I have the O2 XDA IIs and the one part I hate about it is the inabillity to answer call the first try. It does this every hour on the hour.
I have never had a problem with my O2 XDA II. Other than the incompatibility with SPB Pocket Plus on the occasion hard reset, but to say the least it's a software problem, not hardware.
I'm thinking of upgrading to an i-Mate Jam because of the size and the 1.3 mega pixel camera. I'm thinking of upgrading the ram to 128mb from PPCTech, I don't think 64mb is enough, since my old Compaq iPaq 3955 had 64mb and HP iPaq 4155 wasn't enough.
Please share before I jump the gun and purchase the i-Mate. Thank you.
1) the camera is no good (Nokia 7610 1.3MP beats it handsdown IMO). even after the patches and fixes. bearable for snaps.
2) the bluetooth is MS stack. not a problem more of a preference; been spoiled by Widcomm on my previous PPC (an iPAQ), interface is not as easy with wizards.
other than that I love my JAM!!! but get an O2XDAIImini they say it has better resale value.
I heard that the i-Mate jam or similar to it, like the O2 Mini has a problem with picking up calls? If someone calls, it'll get drop, but after a soft reset, it doesn't do that. Is that true? That's almost the same problem as the XDA IIs or PDA2K.
More irritations
when the XDA Mini battery saving function is set, the system goes into sleep mode after the annointed period.
If you are using bluetooth headset (mine is plantronics M3000) on lengthy conversations you loose half the conversation (transmission side only , reception works OK) when the sleep mode activates, until you turn the unit back on. So you either have to live with the reductiion of battery life, the signal loss or remember to turn off the sleep mode, mid conversation.
Others have reported similar problems with no fixes in sight.
The battery life is disappointing but I have not owned other PDA's to compare it with.
The camera is a gimmick only, not for serious use.
I also have trouble in some internet sites requiring pop-up password entry
input (ie. one of my bank accounts) where it just will not acknowledge the data input. Dont know why, and the bank IT people cant explain it either. It works well on another similar banking site. ????
But.. all things considered, it is a pretty useful gadget.
PS; Cant buy any accessories in Australia yet, but www.boxwave.com in USA was a useful site and easy to deal with.
I haven't had any probs with battery life on my Mini. Much better than my SE T610, particularly when you consider the Mini does a double duty of phone and PDA.
Camera works fine for what its there for. Its not designed to replace a digicam, just be there for those moments you don't have it with you.
Not had any of these call problems described.

I'd have to disagree with these two comments, I think the battery life is good on the JAM and as for accessories, lots of online aussie gadget shops sell accessories for the JAM.
http://www.expansys.com.au/
http://www.mrgadget.com.au/
just to name a few.
I shall sit corrected and withdraw my remarks about the accessories in Australia.
Thanks for the links. Have already used one and the other was helpful.
When looking around early last month I coud find accessories listed on websites but nil stocks available. I was impatient so I got my soft case from the states, and aluminium case from Singapore while visiting. Good to see the local have caught up. Although they probably all come from the same places
Thanks for the Input
Thanks for the input, I was curious and now I found the answer.
As long as the pda don't act like my O2 XDA IIs, then I'm fine. I hate it when I pick up a call and can't hear anything on the other end until I have to soft reset it.
I love my O2 XDA II, but it's lacking buttons and keyboard. Both the II and IIs is too big, so I'm gonna try the Mini.
Anyone wants to buy any of my XDA II or IIs? Hehe, I'm serious.

Which one is better? O2 XDA Exec or I-Mate Jasjar?

Hi I live in the United Staes. I am now presented with an opportunity to be able to buy the O2 Exec. So basically I have 2 choices, the Imate Jasjar which is available here, thus with warranty coverage, or the O2 XDA Exec which I really want for its color. I don't really know if there is a hardware difference. I want to buy the O2 Exec from one of the members here. He was kind enough to offer the responsibility to send it to O2 if there is a problem with it later.
Does the I-Mate Jasjar have the corporate settings too?
So if you guys were me, what would you guys go for?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Having owned both a JJ and Exec I would, at this point, recommend the Exec because:
- in Corporate mode it is quicker and has more storage space
- it does not appear to have the SMS notification bug
And like you I prefer the all black colour of the XDA.
Also in the UK you can get an unlocked Exec for less than £300 while a JJ can be £540/£640 (contract/SIM free).
The hardware is identical, and the corporate settings on the Exec closely resemble the Jasjar install when you skip the customization after a hard reset. In all honesty, I ended up buying the Exec, it looks way cooler, it also has BLUE keyboard backlight instead of red, which makes it much much better visible at night.
@Jah. Could you kindly elaborate what the SMS notification bug is. I am asking this because for me on the JJ ocasionally when a new SMS arrives it causes my phone to freeze. Just wondering if this is what you are referring to as the bug.
Kind Regards

Unfortunate for me that I don't know anyone in the UK. I'll be buying the Unopened Box O2 Exec for £500.
That is what I paid as well, and not too bad in comparison with Jasjar and Qtek 9000 prices.

Did you bought it direct from O2 or from one of the members here?
Any tips as to check the validity of the sale?
I already asked the seller to send me pictures of the SEALED box. Is there actually a seal or it is just in a box?
@srmz
Yes, that is it. Search here there a whole thread on the SMS problem
@cktlcmd
This is probably something you already considered and checked, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case. My main concern would be the question of whether it's locked or unlocked. For £500 I would imagine it should be unlocked. Which carrier will you be using?

From what I know, all O2 Exec are unlocked. I will be using Cingulair in New Jersey. Do you also have a universal? If yes, how is the reception? Any comments? Thanks for responding.

Yes, I have a Jasjar and use T-Mobile. I'm not a big user on the voice side of things and haven't had any problems with reception, but my limited use of that aspect might not make me the best source for an opinion.
I do use the data connection often (which is why I like T-Mobile's $19.99 unlimited data) and haven't had any problem getting a signal that way.
Ultimately I'm really happy with it because it's just the device I've been wanting. I use it for just about everything.
OK, I just bought the BRAND NEW, UNOPENED, O2 XDA Exec. I can't wait for it to be on my hands. Any tips as to a good screen protector, and where to buy it from? A link would be really appreciated.
Would you mind sharing where & how much for the unit? I am interested in getting one to be used in CA on T-Mo. Thanks.

I bought it from one of the members here for 550 UK including shipping and handling via FEDEX to New Jersey.
Basically, I just waited and watch this site for most of my free time. I just grabbed it when it presented itself.
Thanks for the info, I think I'll wait till next week & get the Qtek version locally, just don;t care the colour of the iMate version.....

I bought my screen protectors from PPC Techs at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~iMATE_JASJAR-496~area~home.htm
Their WriteSHIELDS come in two flavors, the C2 (Crystal Clear) and the AG (Anti Glare.) I've used both and found they are both very good. I have a crystal one on my old Dell and have never had to change it. To me, the crystal one is so clear that you really don't know it's there. That said, I have the anti glare one for my Universal, primarily because of the phone aspect. The anti glare version (which also stands up to usage very well) is also good with keeping fingerprints to a minimum so it works better when you have it up to your face too. PPC Techs offers a package where you can get one of each and that's actually what I bought for the Universal, I'm just using the AG currently.

I bought my Jasjar from Convergent Technology at http://www.convergentech.com/
Their price looks to be $1079.99, down from $1199.99 when I bought it. The color (colour )was never an issue for me, so I went with a company I had already worked with to give me a bit more confidence that any issues I might have (which I haven't, fortunately) would be worked out with a minimum of headaches.
kelford, thanks for the info, the vendor you used is fairly pricey, e.g. their price on the K-Jam is nealry $150 over what MMB charges! I had to do a double take to make sure they are not posting C$

sclui56, that very well could be. at the time i was looking to buy though, every vendor i found (except ebay) had the JJs for $1,200 so there didn't seem much of a choice at the time. that was when it was first out though, (some sites still listed pre-order status when this vendor had them in stock) and prices hadn't started falling yet. obviously their prices drop much slower than everyone else's! they must have less gravity or something.
in any event, there were two reasons i bought from them. 1) all of my previous PDA purchases had been direct through Dell so this one was a little different and being such a high ticket item there was a real trust concern. going with someone i knew was important. 2) (and probably even more importantly) i wanted it now!!! so yes, i could have waited and saved some money, but now i've had all this time to play with the JJ!

7500 v. 7501

OK, I'm on the verge of getting an Advantage, but wondering whether to wait or not. The big differences seem to be:
1. The video cam (front-facing) supposed to be dropped from the 7501. Is this useful? Anyway to use this for teleconferencing, etc.?
2. WM6 upgrade is promised for the 7500, right?
3. Any other know differences? Any other thoughts? Any other possible hardware upgrades or fixes?
To me, it's looking like getting 7500 might be best, plus I'd have it sooner. Unless I'm missing something...
Thanks for all the help, people.
Your pretty much right on track. Though, some are still on the fence concerning the WM6 upgrade. It's only a matter of time before the U.S. cell companies get video conferencing infastructure in place, and then the front camera may be useful. Until then, however, its not really necessary. Not other differences that I know of.

Haven't tried it yet but in theory the latest version of MS Portrait should allow WLAN videoconferencing with a PC via webcam on PC and built in front facing cam on Advantage.
Whether thats actually useful or not is another matter..
yea dude...the X7500 WILL HAVE A WM6 Uprgrade... even im on the verge of gettin an x7500 although i received an EMAIL from amazon yesterday...and they're offering the x7501 for like $850.00 whereas the x7500 is a bit more...and i tell you it'll be worth it!!!

I am not surprise that X7501 is cheaper, after all, it's has lower spec compare to x7500 and later release date, these factor will make any product cheaper. And also x7501 is specially for US, as you might know, electronic are cheaper in US, all the x7500 are import from europe where the electronic is more expensive. So again, it make sense x7501 is cheaper.

time to update wizard?

hi. I need your opinions should I update wizard to cruiser or wait diamond or even new gen htc phones?
this wizard is getting old and slow so I need YOUR opinions wizard users!
If you can wait, wait for the Diamond. Vastly superior technology. VGA over QVGA, eGPS over GPS, HSDPA, custom UI (reminiscent of PointUI and iPhone, but good enough to mention). PhoneScoop has a pretty good review of the Diamond here: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=193
nice article. maybe ill have to wait for diamond. 4GB limit isnt a problem for me, neither is missing SDIO slot.
only thing which doesnt seem good is that 900mAh battery, since these 1300mAh batterys run out of juice pretty fast also.
but yeah 528mhz processor, lots more internal memory than previous ones mm want that.
im afraid of european version cost, since usually when they come here they cost much more than US version.
Perhaps a vacation trip? The US dollar is so weak right now, that Europeans are flocking to the US to sight-see and shop, instead of the other way around!
found and pre ordered it when it comes from nearby htc reseller.. 550€ but they said its going to drop when it comes.
vacation trip to america would cost much over 1000€ + phone could be fun though but wayyy too high priced trip :>
will see also if there comes some other models with as nice or better specs.

Are Universal's still worth buying?

I have the chance to by a universal for $140 or a htc/at&t fuze for $178. Did i make the right choice going with the cooler and cheeper device, even though it lacks the 3.2mp camera, fm radio, gps, g-class wifi, and smaller/slower ram and rom size?
Welcome to forums
Of course it´s worth every cent!!
Universal is one of the best devices ever build by HTC, and to this date still on the top ones!
Go for it!!!
I don't have a UNI but have most of the other HTC devices. How does the data work on AT&T's network? Can it do Edge speeds or just GPRS? I don't think it has the proper radios to do Edge in US.
Thanks.
There are some American models of this great device, and I´m sure you can get it!
The Universal is indeed a great device. Not only does it work as a phone with everything one needs, it also is a great Windows Mobile device.
What I appreaciate is:
- VGA screen
- full usable keyboard
- pretty fast processor
- size compatible with back-pocket of my jeans, yet big enough to actually use the VGA resultion
What I miss:
- only 64MB RAM, too little for WM6.5 builds (or at least to use them properly)
- no GPS
- no High Speed Internet connection
- camera pretty poor and outdated
I got myself a T-Online Ameo very cheap and while this device features all the missing items, regarding the Universal, it has a major flaw: it does not fit in most of trouser's pocket! This means I keep it at home most of the days...
Newer devices may have equal features, better processors, RAM, etc., but they cost around 500-600 Euro, at least 4 times the price of a second hand Universal!
However, you should definitly checkout the new Windows Mobile models from Acer, like the M900. It costs £189 at Expansys and has some impressive specs.
Cheers,
vma

- I can't upgrade it. I would have to send my Universal to a professional lab, plus I would have to find the right chips. Not exactly something I could do myself, though I am quite familiar with soldering tiny things.
- I use BT GPS, when using my Universal, but it is not nearly as nice as having an integraded GPS module like on my Athena.
- The Athena features a noticable faster internet experience.
Not starting any discussion, just wanted it to be noticed, specially the memory upgrade. If you see how much it will cost you and then add the value or cost of the Universal, you probably might as well swap for a more recent device, unless you happen to get the memory upgrade done by someone you know for little money.
Cheers,
vma

soooooooooo im guessing I won for picking up one with a 8gb mem card for 40 GBP on ebay?
Honestly, I dont think I do much to the universal, I also picked up a kaiser at the same time and that will be my main modding device, I just liked the larger keyboard on the universail...it really looks like something I could write short docs on the move with.
Great choice!
Enjoy your Uni!
Have a read on the Wiki
i just purchased a brand new spv m5000 for 150 im waiting for it to come in the mail. ive downloaded roms and software for it. im going to use it as a backup and a showoff phone. no one knows what it is so i can probably resale for more than what i paid for it.
I say for the price Unis go for these days, depreciating as any device would, and considering what it can do - it's a great device to purchase or upgrade to.

I've used the HTC Universal on AT&T's network and it was just dreadful. Poor reception and only GPRS. AT&T simply doesn't support the frequencies used by the phone and the one that is supported isn't on many towers.
Yesterday my Uni died...
Camera is dead and I cannot reactive the sound in all speakers
But now it's time for a new cell phone. Qtek 9000...black is beautiful
Until there is no comparable device I will use the Uni
