Problem with i-Mate Jam? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Please share the most annoying thing that you don't like about your i-Mate, O2 Mini or something similar to it.
I have the O2 XDA IIs and the one part I hate about it is the inabillity to answer call the first try. It does this every hour on the hour.
I have never had a problem with my O2 XDA II. Other than the incompatibility with SPB Pocket Plus on the occasion hard reset, but to say the least it's a software problem, not hardware.
I'm thinking of upgrading to an i-Mate Jam because of the size and the 1.3 mega pixel camera. I'm thinking of upgrading the ram to 128mb from PPCTech, I don't think 64mb is enough, since my old Compaq iPaq 3955 had 64mb and HP iPaq 4155 wasn't enough.
Please share before I jump the gun and purchase the i-Mate. Thank you.

1) the camera is no good (Nokia 7610 1.3MP beats it handsdown IMO). even after the patches and fixes. bearable for snaps.
2) the bluetooth is MS stack. not a problem more of a preference; been spoiled by Widcomm on my previous PPC (an iPAQ), interface is not as easy with wizards.
other than that I love my JAM!!! but get an O2XDAIImini they say it has better resale value.

I heard that the i-Mate jam or similar to it, like the O2 Mini has a problem with picking up calls? If someone calls, it'll get drop, but after a soft reset, it doesn't do that. Is that true? That's almost the same problem as the XDA IIs or PDA2K.

More irritations
when the XDA Mini battery saving function is set, the system goes into sleep mode after the annointed period.
If you are using bluetooth headset (mine is plantronics M3000) on lengthy conversations you loose half the conversation (transmission side only , reception works OK) when the sleep mode activates, until you turn the unit back on. So you either have to live with the reductiion of battery life, the signal loss or remember to turn off the sleep mode, mid conversation.
Others have reported similar problems with no fixes in sight.
The battery life is disappointing but I have not owned other PDA's to compare it with.
The camera is a gimmick only, not for serious use.
I also have trouble in some internet sites requiring pop-up password entry
input (ie. one of my bank accounts) where it just will not acknowledge the data input. Dont know why, and the bank IT people cant explain it either. It works well on another similar banking site. ????
But.. all things considered, it is a pretty useful gadget.
PS; Cant buy any accessories in Australia yet, but www.boxwave.com in USA was a useful site and easy to deal with.

I haven't had any probs with battery life on my Mini. Much better than my SE T610, particularly when you consider the Mini does a double duty of phone and PDA.
Camera works fine for what its there for. Its not designed to replace a digicam, just be there for those moments you don't have it with you.
Not had any of these call problems described.

I'd have to disagree with these two comments, I think the battery life is good on the JAM and as for accessories, lots of online aussie gadget shops sell accessories for the JAM.
http://www.expansys.com.au/
http://www.mrgadget.com.au/
just to name a few.

I shall sit corrected and withdraw my remarks about the accessories in Australia.
Thanks for the links. Have already used one and the other was helpful.
When looking around early last month I coud find accessories listed on websites but nil stocks available. I was impatient so I got my soft case from the states, and aluminium case from Singapore while visiting. Good to see the local have caught up. Although they probably all come from the same places

Thanks for the Input
Thanks for the input, I was curious and now I found the answer.
As long as the pda don't act like my O2 XDA IIs, then I'm fine. I hate it when I pick up a call and can't hear anything on the other end until I have to soft reset it.
I love my O2 XDA II, but it's lacking buttons and keyboard. Both the II and IIs is too big, so I'm gonna try the Mini.
Anyone wants to buy any of my XDA II or IIs? Hehe, I'm serious.

HTC i-MATE Pocket PC Phone Edition is the King of the Hill

I wanted to let everyone know that both I and a good buddy of mine are running our brand new (two week old) i-MATE Pocket PC Phone Edition units directly from HTC. THEY are both the FULL ENGLISH ROM right from the factory direct, no flashing required. The are excellent units with good battery life and everything better than the T-Mobile units we have before. They have lots of bonus software and since we didn't flash them, we will have no difficulty loading any upgrades later on from Carrier Devices. If you need to know more about the devices go to www.imate.com
We ordered our from a great company in the middle east called Compume at www.compume.com and the devices were delivered to our doorsteps in Toronto within seven days of ordering. The pricing was excellent and BEST of all. If you order the english full version you get a full year world wide warrenty, yes worldwide full warrenty. We are running them with the our original sync/charge USB cables at work and car chargers from our XDA units - perfect no problems ... Again, ordering the i-MATE from Compume means a full warrenty and full english version and less than seven days shipping. The devices surf very fast and with the patch for the ID caller program provided already for the i-MATE units, its flawless. Battery life (after 12 hours of work today (on the whole time) it sits at 41% still. Multi-tasking is great, pictures are surprising very very good. MSN is terrific as always. It holds its GPRS and if your wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from the original - it is truely like night and day ... Dont' hesitate with Carrier Devices HTC i-MATE or ordering from Compume. This is without question the best unit on the market and I've had them all. Oh btw - HBH-65 BT headset, perfect and flawless. I am running as is my buddy on FIDO in Canada with no difficulties what so ever. Dont play with your money and go for the original English Rom. If your wondering about price, our total bill came to 2200.00 CDN for TWO devices and that included shipping costs (7 days and that was with customs)door to door.
You're preaching to the converted, dude !!
camera issue in imate
hi everybody,
got my imate and i really like it . however there is one issue that i think needs attention. although i know the camera is just a toy but why does it mess up images? when I am trying to fix a position to take a picture, everything is clear but when i take the picture there are problems in the picture such as it's quite unclear. is this an issue with the jpg compression utility or something like that?
oh yeah also, today i recieved a call and i tried picking it up but my imate froze. i had to reset and the call was dropped.. this only happened once but does anyone know what's the issue there?
thanks.
Rather lightweight compared to the XDAII though isn't it? 1/8th of the RAM, 1/2 the ROM, 1/3rd the CPU speed and no bluetooth (even the limited stack in the XDAII).
It comes down to what you want, a phone with PDA capabilities or a PDA with a built-in phone.
I agree....I am the guy with the other I-mate. After using this for a week I have to say is WOW. What a powerful pocket PC. I loved my Tmobile XDA but this just blows it away.
Pics and that are @ http://www.carrierdevices.com.au
The store compu-me is a LARGE retail chain in UAE so very stable. You use your Visa or Mastercard which should have 100% protection so not like buying through paypal or sending some guy money who will get someone else to sent it. So we felt good about buying that way. We spoke to the store and they were very helpful and shipped it out right away.
Just a few notes on the I-mates. They do have support for Arabic. Meaning when you first turn it on, or perform a HARD reset it will prompt you to install Arabic language support, Just click decline to the prompt and your ROM will be fully english. I have not had mine lockup or do anything strange was a very smooth week.
The devices did come with a Full Leather Case (I am hearing some do not), the option CD came with 2 complete high end games, Tennis and Odyssey.
In the Box you Get:
- The i-mate (of course)
- USB Cradle
- Power Adapter (tis a UK plug, you just need to purchase a prong adapter) it is a 110 volt and 220 volt adapter!
- Leather Case
- Stereo Headphones
- Activesync/Outlook
- Bonus CD
- Extra Sylus
- Full Colour Manual in English of course (very good, I actually read the chapter on the camera lol)
I have used my Lili sync from Pocket PC techs without any problems all week at work, also bought some writeshields from them (expensive but glad I did).
If you want to buy XDA2 then this is the only SMART way to go...
What? Who? Promo?
What's with all this "make a huge promo in 2000 words or more"? "Hey you really need one of these"!!!
Bogus. I played with one... yea, if you want a tiny little screen, no RAM, no processor speed, then it's great. If you want a PDA that's also a phone, then that's not it.
Umm 128mb, 400 Mhz...what are you talking about, the specs of the imate are the best there is. You must have the XDA2 / Imate confused with something else?

I am new and wanna buy a Qtek 2020i, please help.

Hi guys, i am from Canada and wanna buy a ppc phone with BT, wifi, camera and faster CPU. is qtek 2020i a good choice? does it often freeze if many softwares are installed on it? is Expansys a reliable online shop? would you guys please give me some suggestion, thx alot.
...
Hmmm...Why not? 2020i is already a little bit outdated and therefore should be the price not so high. I have 2020(without I-MDA II)since May 2004 and I am still satisfied even is the concept already 2 years old. Yes maybe is it a little bit slow while running too many apps in multitasking, but 400MHz processor is working very well. The stability doesn't deppend on the number of installed applications, but on what kind of applications(unstable,crashing,conflicting,etc.). And what about the stability... Put there a Magneto and enjoy the rock-hard system kernel. The 2003se is also not bad. 2003 is outdated and non-friendly for many new applications(couldn't run on 2003). If you have a chance to buy it from a second hand(the price could be less than 500$!),then buy it!. It is not like a car(that you need be focused for a technicat state and for miles droven as well ). The electronics can working many years...with no problem. The software can be upgraded. My suggestion: TAKE THAT.

Any updated models that I am un-aware of?
think Magician is newer but it's of cause for a different market
if i were to buy i would wait for Universal

Which one is better? O2 XDA Exec or I-Mate Jasjar?

Hi I live in the United Staes. I am now presented with an opportunity to be able to buy the O2 Exec. So basically I have 2 choices, the Imate Jasjar which is available here, thus with warranty coverage, or the O2 XDA Exec which I really want for its color. I don't really know if there is a hardware difference. I want to buy the O2 Exec from one of the members here. He was kind enough to offer the responsibility to send it to O2 if there is a problem with it later.
Does the I-Mate Jasjar have the corporate settings too?
So if you guys were me, what would you guys go for?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Having owned both a JJ and Exec I would, at this point, recommend the Exec because:
- in Corporate mode it is quicker and has more storage space
- it does not appear to have the SMS notification bug
And like you I prefer the all black colour of the XDA.
Also in the UK you can get an unlocked Exec for less than £300 while a JJ can be £540/£640 (contract/SIM free).
The hardware is identical, and the corporate settings on the Exec closely resemble the Jasjar install when you skip the customization after a hard reset. In all honesty, I ended up buying the Exec, it looks way cooler, it also has BLUE keyboard backlight instead of red, which makes it much much better visible at night.
@Jah. Could you kindly elaborate what the SMS notification bug is. I am asking this because for me on the JJ ocasionally when a new SMS arrives it causes my phone to freeze. Just wondering if this is what you are referring to as the bug.
Kind Regards

Unfortunate for me that I don't know anyone in the UK. I'll be buying the Unopened Box O2 Exec for £500.
That is what I paid as well, and not too bad in comparison with Jasjar and Qtek 9000 prices.

Did you bought it direct from O2 or from one of the members here?
Any tips as to check the validity of the sale?
I already asked the seller to send me pictures of the SEALED box. Is there actually a seal or it is just in a box?
@srmz
Yes, that is it. Search here there a whole thread on the SMS problem
@cktlcmd
This is probably something you already considered and checked, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case. My main concern would be the question of whether it's locked or unlocked. For £500 I would imagine it should be unlocked. Which carrier will you be using?

From what I know, all O2 Exec are unlocked. I will be using Cingulair in New Jersey. Do you also have a universal? If yes, how is the reception? Any comments? Thanks for responding.

Yes, I have a Jasjar and use T-Mobile. I'm not a big user on the voice side of things and haven't had any problems with reception, but my limited use of that aspect might not make me the best source for an opinion.
I do use the data connection often (which is why I like T-Mobile's $19.99 unlimited data) and haven't had any problem getting a signal that way.
Ultimately I'm really happy with it because it's just the device I've been wanting. I use it for just about everything.
OK, I just bought the BRAND NEW, UNOPENED, O2 XDA Exec. I can't wait for it to be on my hands. Any tips as to a good screen protector, and where to buy it from? A link would be really appreciated.
Would you mind sharing where & how much for the unit? I am interested in getting one to be used in CA on T-Mo. Thanks.

I bought it from one of the members here for 550 UK including shipping and handling via FEDEX to New Jersey.
Basically, I just waited and watch this site for most of my free time. I just grabbed it when it presented itself.
Thanks for the info, I think I'll wait till next week & get the Qtek version locally, just don;t care the colour of the iMate version.....

I bought my screen protectors from PPC Techs at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~iMATE_JASJAR-496~area~home.htm
Their WriteSHIELDS come in two flavors, the C2 (Crystal Clear) and the AG (Anti Glare.) I've used both and found they are both very good. I have a crystal one on my old Dell and have never had to change it. To me, the crystal one is so clear that you really don't know it's there. That said, I have the anti glare one for my Universal, primarily because of the phone aspect. The anti glare version (which also stands up to usage very well) is also good with keeping fingerprints to a minimum so it works better when you have it up to your face too. PPC Techs offers a package where you can get one of each and that's actually what I bought for the Universal, I'm just using the AG currently.

I bought my Jasjar from Convergent Technology at http://www.convergentech.com/
Their price looks to be $1079.99, down from $1199.99 when I bought it. The color (colour )was never an issue for me, so I went with a company I had already worked with to give me a bit more confidence that any issues I might have (which I haven't, fortunately) would be worked out with a minimum of headaches.
kelford, thanks for the info, the vendor you used is fairly pricey, e.g. their price on the K-Jam is nealry $150 over what MMB charges! I had to do a double take to make sure they are not posting C$

sclui56, that very well could be. at the time i was looking to buy though, every vendor i found (except ebay) had the JJs for $1,200 so there didn't seem much of a choice at the time. that was when it was first out though, (some sites still listed pre-order status when this vendor had them in stock) and prices hadn't started falling yet. obviously their prices drop much slower than everyone else's! they must have less gravity or something.
in any event, there were two reasons i bought from them. 1) all of my previous PDA purchases had been direct through Dell so this one was a little different and being such a high ticket item there was a real trust concern. going with someone i knew was important. 2) (and probably even more importantly) i wanted it now!!! so yes, i could have waited and saved some money, but now i've had all this time to play with the JJ!

Thinking of buying

Hi all,
I currently have a xda 2, but sadly it has a few issues and ive decided to retire it, i am currently thinking of buying this phone on t-mobile
what do you people think, is it a good phone / pda or does it have problems or is this a alternative
thanks in advance everyone
Rik.
O2 XDA Mini S
I'd heartily recommend the O2 XDA Mini S, but then I would. I have a vested interest.
I can heartily recommend the device as a significant upgrade from and XDA 2 (which is what I had). There are a few performance issues (esp Activesync), but overall I am delighted.
Edited:
To be more specific. The mini has much better bluetooth - I can voice dial from the headset, the handing off of calls is much more reliable. The mini has wifi - free internet at home (yippee). The mini is small enough to cary around at the weekend not just during the week. Meaning I now use it as my one all singing all dancing phone/pda/mp3/scribble pad/sat nav/etc.
Downside is if I lose it <fingerscrossed> <touch wood> I'm f*cked. It is insured, but unless I keep using the SIM from the kitchen drawer and not my work sim, the insurance doesn't count.
Cheers, Davebo.
I just sold my dopod 838.I must say it's the best ppc phone I ve owned.
Everything is perfect except its size.
we have just signed a contract with O2 to replace our current SPVM1000's (XDA II) with MINI S's
i personally recommend getting a wizard!
hi mate
i would gladly purchase your faulty xda2 from you if you want the cash?

Better alternative to the Hermes?

Hello...
I purchased a used Hermes from ebay & from day 1 have been battling the white screen syndrome.
I really like the features on this phone (when it works).
I've read thru most of the threads concerning the white screen issue & it seems as if it is a hardware issue that can not be easily repaired.
The seller agreed to refund my $$$ so I was wondering if there is a more stable phone that shares the same features as the hermes, but might be more reliable?
As a phone - I really only use it for making & receiving calls & caller ID (I do not have a data plan with my provider), but I like the PDA functions for my business - especially the Wi-Fi.
Any suggestions on a more reliable phone? Or should I try my luck & buy another Hermes & hope for the best?
THanks for any info!

Maybe not a particularly helpful suggestion but - with the advent of the Kaiser there may be a few TyTns up for sale around here. There are good ones out there but I would NOT buy one from ebay as it's a dumping ground for the bad ones!
Mike
I got my herm100 from a guy on craigslist, I've been more then happy with it.
My suggestion is to return yours and try again.
Yup, I love mine too!
Else there's the brand new Kaiser, which is now called the TyTN II. Looks pretty sweet!
There is some...ah....discontinuity in asking about Hermes alternatives in the Hermes forum. Be interesting to see what the Trinity or BlackBerry forums would say.....
