Hi I'm thinking of getting a new pda/phone but I'm not wure which one to go for... the Universal is very tempting but it's size puts me off a bit... where as the wizard seems ideal in size but I have read several post about how multitasking is difficult because the unit is slow. Any thoughts?
then go with the new TyTn. Its the size of the Wizard with the power almost the same with the Universal. The only thing that is not there is the VGA screen. Other than that, the TyTN has it all, 3G tri-band, decent 2MP camera, etc. Just read about it to make sure its what you look for.
I'm from the UK, is it available here?
http://www.europe.htc.com/products/
Absolutely. Its launched first in Europe, and ppl in the US asked the same question, is it available in the US? =)

Orange do it on their website for 149.99 in the UK, it is known as the SPV 3100.
I have both. For phoning, the Wizard is FAR better. The same stands for the battery life. If you plan to do a LOT of Web browsing (where VGA is important), then, go for the Universal. Otherwise, get the Wizard.
If I were you, I'd get the Hermes though.
OK, I saw information on the 7500 and I really thinking on getting one...
Then I heard more about WM6 and no upgrades to it for the 7500 and thought I'd rather not get the 7500 then... besides it wasn't available.
Now theres an official launch in the USA of the x7501 which is nothing but the 7500 with WM6... !!!!!!!!!!!! wtf !!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_x7501.htm
HTC, what are you guys doing? Why the heck do you spread there will be no upgrades to WM6 when you at the same time just change the model number and make it run WM6?
You are happy to make customers wait to buy something today that is alkready outdated before it's been released. That feels a bit like treating customers like idiots.
Maybe I'm best off to stick with my now pretty JASJAR running WM 5 our WM 6 ....

maybe you haven't been following my post, i have told you there will be an ungrade on WM6 quite a long time ago, HTC said it already in 3GSM.
Anyway, HTC X7501 won't be out until summer in USA. So if you want a Athena, you better buy it now, it can be then update to WM6 in summer
I can also confirm that an upgrade will be available. Although I don't know when.
Ameo Upgrade from Whom?
Re: ROM update with WM6
If we have the T-Mobile Ameo wouldn't we need a ROM update from T-Mobile to get exactly the same feature set? Has T-Mobile committed to releasing one? I guess in the worst case the HTC one will work on the Ameo?

But can we update the T-Mobile Ameo with the HTC Advantage WM6 rom?

i am sure you can upgrade to WM6, either through the official update release , or though some hack (super cid). And the finial result is, you will be able to upgrade to WM6
Does anyone know if the 7501 will be offered unlocked and unbranded in the USA or if it will only be available through USA wireless carriers? HTC has not sold directly in the USA so this would be a first for this market.

thats brilliant news about WM6!
I'd be quite hapy for the HTC ROM, not too fussed about the T-Mob update - wahat would we loose anyway if we used the HTC upgrade? The pink templates and web and wank?
Hi,
I look at the Specs on the x7501 in the HTC web site and there is now second camera.
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=752 there is a second camera, so how is wrong ?
Too bad the one coming out in america doesnt have a camera.

Good catch. The pictures and specifications both indicate the 7501 will NOT have a front camera, which sucks (even if I don't use it). Now it depends on pricing. If the 7500 and 7501 cost about the same I will go for the 7500.

oh, i have just notice the it is true that 7501 don't have the front camera.
I will phone my HTC contact next week and try to confirm this.
Just taken a long hard look at the HTC website, where as other threads have noted, the X7501 has been announced.
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_x7501.htm
Having gone through the 2 spec's the only difference I can find is WM6. My worry (being an owner of an Ameo) was that they'd spotted something in the hardware and had to release a new spec! This doesn't seem to be the case.
It gives even more hope that WM6 for the Athena is a matter of weeks away...
Difference is Front Camera
It seems the front camera is missing from the 7501 ("Second camera: VGA CMOS imaging sensor")

If you have read my post, you should know this by now, the only different in 7500 and 7501 is the OS , and the front camera. HTC will not lunch the WM6 update for 7500. Not sure about Ameo, but DOPOD 100% will lunch the WM6 update for DOPOD U1000. But it's no where soon, it will be in summer.
As a U1000 owner I am much relieved. Thanks for this confirmation. I look forward to receiving WM6 update in summer even if I have to pay for it.
Say what? I just spent a lot of money on the Ameo, beleiving it WAS wm2006, because all the hype was the Athena/Advantage/Whatever would be one of the first to have it.
Now the T-Mobile Ameo HAS a front camera, does that mean no 2006 for us?
Would flashing the wrong rom mean a dead device or a device where the front cam stops working, or even a fully working device with 2006?
T-Mobile better not shaft us on 2006.
I had just assumed the 2005 in the spec was either an error or due to delays in 2006 it would ship 2005 and have an update shortly after, but from what your saying there is no upgrade for the version with front cam? that sounds mad.
There will be an official WM6 ROM. I would say 2-3 months (that's a guess btw, I don't know any official date).

nono, that is not what i am saying, the no front camera version is HTC X7501 (WM6). I am not quiet sure why they took out the front camera, but certainly they will not release wm6 update for x7500 (otherwise no one will buy x7501).
For T-mobile, there is only one version, which is Ameo, since i don't have contact with T-mobile, i can't tell you whether they will release WM6 update for Ameo or not, it's really up to them. When Ameo lunch, it clearly say it's WM5, therefore they really have no responsibility to release WM6 Update. It's purely a benefit for their customer. So let's hope they will do so.
As for DOPOD, there is also only one version, DOPOD U1000, and since DOPOD is always quite strong on software development and frequent ROM update, it make sense that they will release the WM6 update.

What is your source for No Update for HTC 7500? It is your contact at HTC? I am being told that Yes, HTC will allow upgrade for HTC 7500, as who would buy HTC 7500, if three month's later a 7501 with WM6 is planning to be released.Everyone would just wait for 7501...
At least that is what is being quoted on several WM internet sites, with quotes from HTC management. Even distributors are saying that 7500 will be able to upgrade. But then again, I guess you could put any anthena wm6 rom on any anthena device.
Just curious as to why some say their HTC source says yes and some say No...

Firstly i must say don't trust those website who says things without confirmation. I only post facts here, not assumption. It's not hard to assume that WM6 update will be available since they already announce the WM6 version of Advantage. Of course you can simply extract the Rom from X7501 to install on your X7500. But that is not what we call Official Update.
Second thing is HTC has never produce a Rom Update what so ever in the past, and it's very unlikely they will change as well. I have not been told there isn't WM6 update for X7500, but here is the thinking, if HTC has never produce update in the past, will they do it for x7500? If WM6 update is available for X7500, then what's the point of X7501? This is their way to make money, by lunching the same device (almost) with different OS.
Anyway, i once say again, 100% sure DOPOD will have WM6 Update, don't know about T-mobile, unlikely HTC will lunch WM6 update.
After all, if you want a black Advantage with WM6, wait for X7501 which is due out in summer.
I always thought that X7501 was geared towards US market and did not have tom tom installed. X7500 is EU specific release and as a seperate market releasing an update for WM5 for this device would not impact too much on US market..

Not precisely. The X7501 is meant for U.S. market and will be sold by Amazon.com. The X7500 is not intended for U.S. market, though, will be available for purchase as an import unlocked phone like so many previous HTC branded phones. I would expect the X7500 to receive a WM6 update, since the MAJORITY of buyers will should not be U.S. buyers, and the X7501 would not be locally available anyway. Just my thoughts.

Yes, I have gone to the American website, and under new products, the only Athena metioned is the X7501. The Avantage page only lists the X7501, as well. Can you link us to the page that shows where the X7500 will be distributed by HTC, themselves (in the U.S.) as the non american website shows in what countries (except US) where the products are sold? My understanding is that the X7501 will be the first HTC branded (not rebranded) phone marketed in the U.S. Feel free to corect me if I'm wrong on that one. Also this is why the X7500 will have a front facing camera, and the X7501 may not. There is no video conferencing infastructure by the cell companies (that I know of) in the U.S. in place as of yet.
I'm just not sure you're correct on this one. The X7500 is supposed to be European market, though as stated earlier, will most definitely be sold in the U.S. by the same companies that have always sold European market HTC phones here, like Mobileplanet, Mobilecityonline, dyamisim, etc...
Oh, and HTC should be releasing an updated ROM for the 8525 (hermes) this month or next (this one won't have WM6 though). Maybe thats not what you meant, though, since you're already aware of updated ROMs for the U1000, and possibly Ameo.
The reason no one liked to give updated OS's is because when WM5 appeared it really needed NAND based ROM. Though it could be used on a NOR based ROM device, the memory blocks had to be constantly arranged to keep from running out of memory, and it ate nearly 100% CPU about 50% of the time. Performance was terrible on the IPAQ HX4700 because of this, as I performed this upgrade when they released a WM5 upgrade for $50 (I'm not sure if anyone else ever offered one). WM6 is realy a SMALL upgrade in terms of an OS from WM5 and obviously won't need any new hardware. I'm using WM6 on my 8525, and other than a few new services, it is essentially the same as WM5 in day to day use. It does, however, have a much better remote terminal feature than WM5.
With the front camera being the difference, its unlikely, HTC won't release a ROM with WM6 on it for their $1500 device, especially since they will have one for the X7501, which would require next to no tweaking of the ROM to release for the X7500. I guess we can discuss it till the cows come home, so I suppose only time will tell. Anyway, I'm not going to wait for the X7501, and have already preordered one from Mobilecityonline. Hopefully it will be released in the next few weeks (I hope, I hope, I hope....)

I think some of your understanding might be correct, looks like i have got some info mix up. Yes when i say 7500 is available for US, i meant through company like mobileplanet. And i was looking at the wrong site as well, here is where both machine appear: http://www.htc.com/product/03-products.htm .
Once again, although i have contact in HTC, they can not tell me for sure whether they will release WM6 Update for x7500. I wasn't wrong that HTC has never produce and ROM Update before, the update you are getting for 8525 isn't produce by HTC. Advantage isn't the first phone branded only by HTC, there are others already, and they haven't receive any update what so ever yet.
I guess you are right, times will tell, (in summer). And it really isn't that much a big deal since DOPOD is for sure to have WM6, even X7500 don't have wm6 update, they can still flash the DOPOD rom.
Thanks for the link. I think its funny how they list under 'The following products are currently available from HTC'
HTC Shift
HTC Advantage x7500
HTC Advantage x7501
I wish!!!
In any case, I do look forward to hearing what you find out from your contact from HTC in the future. Thanks for all the info contributed.

Hello,
I want to buy a HTC Athena. My preference is the HTC Advantage X7501. X7501 comes out at the end of this month at most places. I really don't know the difference between X7500 and X7501 and would like to know. Other than the WM6 i don't see anything. But it could be more.
Anyways I live in Canada and I would like to buy X7501. Can anyone provide me with some good place offering a nice price? On eBay brand new ones are going for $900. Anyone know some other place cause I don't want to buy one from eBay.
I got mine from CompUSA for US$900. I beleive that Amazon has them for US$850
Practically, you get Tom Tom software but no maps on the 7500. 7501 has shovelware GPS with a monthly cost (I wouldn't call that preloaded....)

I would suggest the x7500 since it has the front VGA camera.
Then just unlock it with olipro's unlocker and use a branded WM6 upgrade (eg. Dopod U1000 WM6).
Software is software. It is always, in my opinion, better to get the software you like/need instead of looking for bundles of crap.
There is always free alternatives to everything. Or you could be shrewd and hard reset your device each 30 days (when most trialware expires) and voila, you get another 30 days. Of course you backup your important data first.

What are you saying? X7501 doesnt have a front VGA Camera?
And all thats happened in the X7501 is the WM6 change and some other software?
Well plainly i dont require all this software and what not. I just require a Vanilla WM6. I thought they might have fixed some bugs and twitches here and there. But looks like none of you got any insider.... If they had to update the devices with WM6 and other software could have released on their site.
I posted the same question on here a few weeks back. I went with the 7500, mainly because it had the front camera and TomTom. Even though it has WM5 on it, I knew the WM6 upgrade would be out soon, so no big deal waiting a bit.
If I had purchased the 7501 at CompUSA for $900+tax, it would have only been about $175 less than what I paid for the 7500. Besides, my CompUSA has been out ever since the first week they started selling them.
I needed instant gratification, so I paid a little extra for the 7500, and got the front cam as a bonus. It might not ever be of much use, but at least it's there in case some cool app comes out that can utilize it.
I just found one at CompUSA in Indianapolis; its mine now. One thing to consider: You can get the two year Advance Exchange extended warranty here. If the thing quits 23 months from now and they cannot replace it, you get a comparable (meaning usually current and better) model or full credit.
Damn... why would they remove the front camera from 7501???
that only makes the phone worse. I dont need any apps. Tomtom / WM6 or whatever you know. We can get wm6 from here and i have a preloaded tomtom software that i can setup in 10 minutes. Well i have no choice. i will get one from amazon for $850.

It is a great device...Good Luck
Just wondering how many of you are going to sell your 8525/Tytn for the soon-to-be-released Tilt/Tytn II! Please vote!
I don't understand the big deal? Seems like the same device with a slower processor and different keyboard flipping mechanism?

From what I have read, the processor used in Tilt/Tytn II is a dual-core processor, so, even though it runs at 384Mhz, it's faster than 8525's 400Mhz processor. Also, screen tilting is not the only upgrade. You forgot a 3PM camera, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, a built-in GPS, etc.
@fordracerguy: If you had read the threads here, or maybe the specs over at pdadb, i think you would have easily understood the "big deal"
Sold for $365 on ebay. Did I mention the BlackJack or actually the Microsoft Smartphone OS SUCKS. The phone isnt too bad but MS SP WM5 sucks compared to PPC. I am hating the limitations pending the Kaiser in Sept.
Well, That does sound pretty nice. However, does WM5 or WM6 support a multi threaded operating system? Or is it more one core is for hardware stuff like the radio, and the other is for the OS ?
None of the above. I will get the Tilt and my wife will replace her Treo 650 with my current 8525.
I'll be keeping my Hermes and adding the Kaiser to my ever growing stack of phones...

Technically, you are selling your 8525 to your wife for $0.

I think I was lucky too seeing a refurb on ATT site is $199 and New is $399. I offered it unlocked with WM6 and no contract so the buyer got a decent deal too.
Hmm. Is it that great? Here is what it is missing IMO;
:VGA screen,
:Full-sized mini-jack out,
:More H/W buttons where you actually need them (at the top of the device where your damn thumbs are!)
:a decent OS.
Oh sod it, where do I sign???
forget selling the tytn im making the girlfriend by me the tilt for a early xmas gift
Christmas seems to get earlier every year...

I paid $1.99 for the 3.5mm jack attachment on ebay for my headphones to work. I am not complaining especially since the Hermes and Kaiser has the same jack.
Will Be Keeping My Hermes/tytn, Only Real Difference Is The Camera, I Gotta 10mp Digital Cam, So Cant Be Fussed To Upgrade
If this camera is good quality I will save up and trade my 8525 in!

Camera is only difference?!? What about dual core CPU, a dedicated GPU, built in GPS, tilt keyboard...i'm sure there's more, but those are the main things Camera Shamera...that's the least important part of the kaiser.
