I've recently run into a problem with activesync. When I connect my spv m5000 to my PC, activesync starts up, and the familiar 'retrieving settings' box shows up. But that never goes away, and after a while, I get an error message on my m5000, stating that
'no IP adress could be obtained from the server. Try again later, or provide a specific IP adress in the Network settings.'
Now, I remember changing the setting in all the 'Network devices' list to 'obtain Ip automatically' a while ago, and I remember that on specific item was set to a fixed IP, but I can't remember which device it was, nor what the IP was. Can somebody check and tell me?
i have the same problem and i get this error message when i connect to wifi too. i think it drainsmy battery when it tries to obtain an ip. how do i fix this?
Try 169.254.2.1 .
BTW, did you read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=555&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ? It explains the why's.
Sorry, which network card should i assign ito? Is it the Asyncman miniport? please advise. thanks!
I'm having the same problem, have searched a lot and can't find a solution. My M5000 syncs well at home, but not with my laptop. There are no firewalls, it always hangs on the 'Retrieving settings' pop up. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hiya.
When I'm syncing my Wizard (O2 Mini S) with XP SP2 via the USB cable, I've started getting a dialog popup upon connection which says:
Code:
Pocket PC Networking
Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in network settings.
I click ok, and the box disappears, and it seems to sync okay. So it's not a big problem, but I just wondered what exactly it's complaining about.
Cheers muchly.
Rolo.
I got that, too. No idea why, though.
Me to although sync works fine??
i think it's referring to internet through activesync. i was getting the same thing when trying to connect to my router so i went to network adapters in network cards and set a static ip for my device.
in the network adapters page there's an adapter called asyncmac.... maybe if u set a static ip for that adapter u'll stop getting that error

I have the same problem. Setting the asyncmac to static IP did not help.
Anyone that has another suggestion on how to solve this.
My kjam started to do this. I know what I did: I went into the Settings/Connections/Network Cards/Network Adaptors/Remote-NDIS Host and it would not let me out without setting something up so I set it to "User server assigned IP address". I then started to get this message.
Something killed the cat...
I then changed it to "Use specific IP address": 169.254.2.1/255.255.0.0
as was listed on another site. The proble went away..OTOH, I'm not
sure what I messed up in doing this..everything seems to be working.

still got problem

I tried the same but it seems I still got problem....is the IP number you reported the same for everyone?
I took the listed IP on blind faith... One other thing I've changed in activesync is to set up a dummy server so that it doesn't start up by itself as quoted below from howard-forums at http://65.254.44.186/showpost.php?p=6156473&postcount=3
I ddid this and the ip change at the same time. Might be worth a try.

Quoted of post by Koksie on Howard-forums:
I had the same on my T-Mobile Vario untill I did the following: In ActiveSync go to menu-server configuration. Put in a server name ( just invent one, does not have to be a real one) and tap next. Leave everything empty and tap "advanced". Do not change the values in the boxes and tap next. leave all the boxes empty and tap finish. Then go to Menu-Schedule and put both boxes on manual. On my Vario it worked, ActiveSync does no longer activate itself every x minutes to try sunchronizing with an exchange server, which is what causes the spontaneous periodical activation of Active Sync.
every now and then i get the following message appear
Unable to obtain Server assigned IP address. try again later or enter an ip address in Network settings.
message screen shot attached
any ideas what is causing this message. wifi works fine so i do not think it is that.
any thoughts or help would be great
Thanks
Do you have DHCP Enabled on the internet connection of your PC? Or do you have static IP address?
Nope, not sure why, i get this sometimes when i try to conenct to a wifi hotspot that has no encryption but static ip address of a weird range
ICS was turned on my dial up connection at work. i have disable this now. lets see if it solves the problem i will leave it a couple of hours and then up date the board
Thanks

Hello every1
Hope you all had a happy easter.
I have a slight problem since upgrading my Qtek 9000 to the latest rom.
I always get this warning when I open my Qtek 9000.
The warning says:
Unable to obtain a Server - assigned IP address. Try again later or enter a IP address in Network setting.
Does anybody known whta is causing this warning an how to stop it.
I'm not using any software that has to connect to the internet.
The push mail I have not set it up because I do not known how.
Can sameone be kind to tell me how to disable this warning because it is driving me crazy.
I do not get any anther problem since installing the new rom it has not crashed my pda now for over a week I'm a very happy bunny, just what this warning to go away.
Thanks
Gigino

I got the same kind of message (not only with the latest ROM), when I connect my Pocket to my PC through the USB cable and ActiveSync, even if everything was working fine (network and internet).
If you check the network properties from both the PC and the Pocket, they are all in "got an IP automatically" status.
The PC is allocated 169.254.2.2 with Pocket (169.254.2.1) as DHCP server.
The Pocket is allocated 169.254.2.1 but by who?
I also noticed that when I am connecting the pocket to my home PC and my work PC, the pocket is having always the same IP address.
Then by changing the "Parameters/Connections/Network Cards/Network Cards/Remote NDIS Host" to specify address 169.254.2.1 (Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0), you can connect to your PC without any such message.
Hoping this will help
PS: I am not sure about all English translation, because my Pocket is in French!
Yes, just playing around with this and having issues with 'pass thru' on another USB/AS4.1/RNDIS related thread.
Am using those same settings, and it gets rid of the 'Pocket PC Networking' popup.. but it is certainly having issues when in pure USB (ie. no wireless anywhere, no cell etc.) and attempting to use PC's USB dial-up broadband..

???????
Remote NDIS Host, is used only in "pure" USB connection.
In wireless connection, it uses tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet. No ?
Having looked through the forums i'm not alone in this problem?,i have always been able to connect to the internet through my home wireless network and veiw wap sites while out & about, until yesterday i can now no longer connect to my network? All i have done is to configure it so as to be able to browse the web via gprs via a remote server as shown in a thread on this site. That worked a treat but now no wireless access, just keeps connecting but not able to connect. tried various fixes as stated in numerous threads, no joy. put it back to original config still the same. as far as i (novice) can tell it can't get a ip address of my linksys WRK54G router. haven't touched that so doubt if that is at fault. All other laptops in house still able to connect? DOH Any advice would be appreciated. Going to check on brothers network if it can connect? will let you know.
It would help if you post links to whatever advice you followed to change settings, so we would know exactly what you were trying to do.
On a side note we have a linksys router at work (fortunately not on the main network) and sometimes it refuses to let my Jamin connect for no reason until I reset it. (Pulling the power supply does the trick)
I know it is not much of a solution, but worth a shot (router configuration will not be effected) specially if you manage to connect to your brothers network.
Sorry here is link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=269023&highlight=T-Mobile+GPRS.
Also had error message appearing about ip address not being assigned, after/during activesync? fixed this. Could it be related?.
When connecting to network all details show correct in the WiFi settings page, but in the advanced tab ip is 0.0.0.0 and status assigned to network. If i tap renew nothing happens?. Hope this helps tia
Guess you would like to no how i fixed the other problem, "http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc/browse_thread/thread/d6df3cc438b9ca5f/8bd321e9d0200967%238bd321e9d0200967?sa=X&oi=groupsr&start=0&num=3"
Have got it working, tried powering down wireless router - no change, thought about a hard reset, not today thanks, tried a soft reset, bingo! it works. swear i had already tried that??, thanks for help great forum.
Oops Must have been a hiccup, was still unable to surf web through WiFi, managed it once then kept getting message unable to connect, check connections. Finally sorted it.
Set up internet connection through my ISP using o2 payandgo details, but with out proxy server info. Kept gprs settings the same in My Work Network.Seems ok after a couple of minutes testing.
If anyone needs the exact settings send me a message and I will post them.
Hello
recently I receive on the HTC Trinty the following announcement shortly after the connection to the PC:
"By the server assigned IP address cannot be called away. Try it later still einemal or give in the network settings an IP address."
And in this connection I have found still an other, interesting point: Anew appears by the installation of software another choice path (Network).
I would be really glad, if I could get rid of this tiresome tip... Any tips, how and where I have to give what that this irritating announcement does not appear any more -
I know, a HW-Reset would also solve this....
Hi folks
So many cracks on these sides and no solution to this problem????
hi! this is apenning because you have been connected to a wireless network, using a proxy server, and when you connect your PDA to you computer, he try to reach this proxy server.
you sould disable it in connection settings.
