natural position of receiving calls(talking on the XDA Exec - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hello
I was wondering which is the natural position of receiving calls on the XDA Exec.
is it talking on the phone into the screen side of the phone or talking into the phone with the phone shut?

It's got a microphone in the base part which is under the bottom part when it's closed with screen up, and it's got two speakers, whichever one is outside and up with the screen closed is used. So in other words, If you hold it with screen visible but lid closed (standard portrait pda mode), you hold the screen to your head right side up, and if the screen is closed, you use the same position but without accidentally activating ten dozen functions from your ear touching the screen..

thanks for the reply
so it has got 2 speakers
the first one below the screen and the second one on the ther side of the screen
and has got one microphone, which is on the other side of the screen.
does that not mean that the natural position to talk is with the phone closed?
"nd if the screen is closed, you use the same position but without accidentally activating ten dozen functions from your ear touching the screen"
how can one activate the dozen functions if the screen is closed?

it does not matter if the screen is flipped around (pda or clamshell mode) or not. In both modes, you use the device in same way.
look at some photos of the universal, then you will understand. the micro is placed on the base, so it is always at the bottom side of the device. the flipable top part has a loudspeaker at the screen side and a loudspeaker on the other side. so you always have one loudspeaker at same place, where your ear will rest when talking.

thanks for the reply
i understand now that irrespective of using clamsheel or pda mode, the voice quality remains the same

Can i talk on a jasjar without opening the phone

i mean with the screen in inside position i am not able to talk and i heard somebody say it is possible so what is true
I'm sure this has been posted a hundred times before, but yes you can use the JasJar as a phone with the lid closed and the screen 'inside'.
There are the two buttons on the hinge for answering/rejecting a call, and the three little speaker holes are clearly visible on the 'outside' of the lid...
i tried it but no voice is coming from the speaker i even tried hard reset twice but still the same problem
sounds potentially like a hardware failure here, if you can here it in upright mode on the other speaker above the screen, in clam closed you should also be able to hear.

Poor Exec ergonomics? Just me or everybody?

There are a few things I'd change about the ergonomics of the Universal. I'm right-handed so I hold the thing in my left hand and operate with my right. Before this I had an XDA2.
- on/off switch should be on the right-hand side of the case, under the 'Enter' key and should be easier to find without looking (i.e. by feel only). In portrait mode it should be at the top of the machine
- the pen should come out of the case in the same location as it does for the XDA2, i.e. under the '->' key on the keyboard. In portrait mode I have to reach over the top of the Exec and fumble the pen out from the left side of the machine
- the phone answer/end buttons on the hinge are exactly where my thumb is located when I hold the phone while talking in portrait mode (I listen through my left ear), so I often press them by accident while talking. They should be at the opposite end of the hinge IMHO and they should light up when a call comes in
- camera lens is at the wrong end of the machine: in tablet mode but landscape (which is the only orientation the camera seems to allow  :?: ) I hold the Exec with my left hand and press the shutter button with my right and in this position my left-hand fingers often obscure the lens. If the lens was at the SD-card end of the case I could hold the Exec comfortably in my left hand without obscuring the lens
I love this machine but I'm curious to know whether I'm the only one who finds it slightly awkward to use in some circumstances. Maybe because of the dual format (tablet/laptop) it'd be impossible to get perfect, but the above changes would help me a lot.
Kind of agree, but I'll adapt.
The other niggle - my lovely Proporta case, complete with belt clip - you leave the device in the case to use it. Perfect! Except the toggle for the belt clip is, of course, on the previously "flat" camera side, so I can no longer sit the thing on a desk to type without first unscrewing (and probably losing) the belt clip toggle...
Pah.
It seems that space issues dictate where the pen went.
Infact, if you look the end curves to go above the usb socket!
I used to laugh at the Magician owners when I had XDAII, i had a real stylus and they had a stubby little square thing.
Bah, i feel foolish now.
On the positive side though, just how many speakers does this thing have? I've counted four so far...
Two on the side edge (stereo), plus one above the screen in tablet mode, and then another one in the plain side where the holes are (above the Enter key when the clamshell is closed).
Just answered a phone call with the case closed and the sound was coming from those holes. So we can answer it both when the clamshell is closed and when it's in tablet mode. Awesome! No more dirty screen!
Does it automatically answer the phone if you open the clamshell to view the screen when it rings? Haven't tried this yet.

Front aluminum sheet!!
Has anyone encountered the same?! I have used the phone with closed clamshell and many times when my sideburners got stuck in between the slight attachement edge of the metal sheet on the clamshel!
I thought it is inconvenient and now I believe it is so! The metal sheet is not properly glued to the phone body!!
Poor craftwork

Hehehe
It sounds funny, but I guess (like the points I made in my original post) it's a small irritation for you. Wonder whether they have bearded testers in the HTC factories...

Although it is funny but way too serious
Yet your suggestion for beard testers is recommended

Earpiece problem.

recently the earpeice on the oustide of my M5000 has stopped working when the phone is in the closed position with the screen facing inwards, if i open the phone slightly so that the display somes on the speaker works again, there is no problem using the earpiece when in "pda" mode when the sceen is flipped to the outside.
any ideas?
its starting to drive me nuts as i always ues my phone in "laptop" mode, and make calls with the phone in closed position.
thanks.
Ryan.
sorry to bump, but i cant stand it any more.
I've been thinking about when it happened. i've got a feeling it was after making some registry changes, are there any keys that control how the phone behaves when the case is opened and shut?

the right side

well... a very very stupid question :-D :-D :-D do you use to put the kaiser in the original (or non original) case with the screen turned inside or outside?
ehhe, thanks
stefano
Screen face in towards the body. Less chance of breaking the screen if you bumped into a corner or if something poked the case. Rare but it happens. Thats how my son lost his iPod screen. The screen was facing out in the case and he was pushed into the corner edge of the cafeteria counter.
Yes... I have think the same observation... The only two think are:
- the button to silence the incoming call is under, so you must pull out the pda to turn the joy and silence the ring;
- With the original case when I try to pull out the phone with a finger under the case (where there is an specific hole), the keyboard slide open itself... I must do more attention to pull out the phone without open the key slide.
Bye!

My ear messing with calls

I keep disconnecting or putting people on mute whatever with my ear, is there a setting to turn the screen off during calls?

Is this in the native dialer?
Your phone screen should automatically turn off when you put your phone to your ear.

That's odd and wrong, the proximity sensor is about 0.5 cm left to the camera cutout, make sure you don't:
Have a dirty display
Use an invasive case
Use a badly applied screen protector, some glass ones can cause problems too
Cover only the left side of the screen with your ear
What software are you on?
S10+ out of the box with the Samsung screen protector , the Spiggen air case, the thinnest one on the market and stock Pie, using Nova

I've had the same thing happen a couple of times. The prox sensor is too far to the edge of the phone so it doesn't always "see" my face when I hold it up to my ear. I had the same issue with LG G7.
It's happen to me as well but I don't really mind since I text more often than I do calling people ?

Can you replicate the bug by playing a WhatsApp audio file(can be your own) and covering the top of your phone?
It's easy to replicate on a call. Hold the phone up to your left ear and just slightly rotate it away from your head. You'll see the screen come on. It all depends on how you hold phone while you're talking.

Yes, I've tested the proximity sensor and it works, so it's more about how I hold the phone it seems. I take a lot of calls whilst on the move and i pace about a lot whilst talking.
It seems the screen is going on and off and my ear is touching the screen before the sensor turns it off again.
For someone who makes 30 or 40 or so calls a day the problem is me and the fact I'm never sitting at a desk when doing so.
I need to work around this with an ear use routine lol

very old thread, but i suffer the same issue, even with all the updates. only when under lineageOS the proximity-sensor works just fine. bur lineage is no solution, unfortunately.
Did you ever manage to really solve this ?
best regards from switzerland
The issue of the Prox sensor is one as old as smartphones. My questions and advice usually go like this,
Do you have long hair that drapes over your ear? Hair that hangs in front of your ear is not always solid enough to be detected. Light can also bleed through and cause false signals allowing the screen to stay on. There are two ways to overcome this, press the phone tightly to your ear. This compacts the hair and blocks the light. Some don't like this because of the pressure. Pull your hair back before placing the phone to your ear.
Are you sure of the device placement? Everyone's ears are different and sometimes the sensor can miss the ear. Slight adjustments forward or back can land the sensor on a solid portion of the ear rather than a recessed area. Also holding the phone too high can be an issue as your ear is actually under the sensor. Figuring out ear placement becomes muscle memory and can change from device to device you just have to find the spot first then make an effort to hit a few times until it's natural.
Is your screen clean? Ironically a dirty screen can cause issues with these sensors as well. If the screen is dirty from makeup or natural oils in the skin the sensor may have a difficult time realizing there's a difference and not react. Just running your palm over the upper portion of the screen right before placing the device to your ear should be enough to clean the sensor and provide a contrast reference.
Most of you have tested your sensor but for those who haven't if you continue to have issues it is always possible that there is a defect in the sensor. If none of the above advice has worked it's a good idea to test both the Prox and light sensor. To test the light sensor, set your device to auto brightness and in a well lit area place your palm over the upper portion of the phone, the screen should dim. To test the prox sensor, place a call or have a friend call you and place your palm over the upper portion of the screen, the screen should go dark with no display.
If all of the advice fails and the phone also fails the sensor tests you may need to take the device in for service.
A temporary solution would also be to not hold the phone flush against your cheek while on calls. There are no controls at the top of the phone and muting or disconnecting comes from cheek contact. The mic on the device is very good. You'd actually find that you could sit the phone on the table and talk to someone in a normal voice and they would hear you just fine. You obviously wouldn't hear them as well if not on speakerphone, because speakerphone both boosts the volume and incorporates the second speaker. So even if you held the device a few inches or CM from your mouth the other person would still hear you just fine. This is another technic that requires a bit of practice but can become second nature with the added benefit of keeping your screen a little more smudge free.
