Yeah I agree... and the Java version of Opera, Opera Mini.

Looks good, only it seems totally incompatible with the magician as it comes to the on-screen keyboard.
Regards, M

Opera is not yet available for WM2005 though (only smartphone 2003) - I was on their site yesterday, still no download links. You know better, please tell!
Also minimo will be free (will prob be 2 years before we see a decent version though!)

I have Opera for 2005 for a couple of weeks or so... and it looks great.

Opera is fantastic. Stomps on PIE's head.

I'm also in love with Opera. beside some small bugs (like double space) it's the most reliable and compatible browser for mobile devices (from full AJAX support ans so on)

unless im mistaken, the link to minimo at the TOP of this page is a very old version (11 months old ver 0.02 feb 05 edition ) there is a much newer (1 month old ver 0.12 dec 05 edition)

aven't tested it yet, but 0.12 version (& older versions too) can be found here http://www.meer.net/~dougt/minimo_ce/
It's big & fat (almost full screen & > 10MB), looks good though. Crashed just before finishing my post. Supports on screen keyboard, very important on a magician & compatibility ??
Going to test it for a week or so.
Cheers, M

I liked minimo, but I found .12 simply too slow to really use
Opera is quite a bit faster than minimo, but still slower than PIE on WM5 and tends to do some strange things with frames (hopefully they'll get that ironed out for the real release)
I'm really looking forward to these programs maturing, as PIE could use some real help

Dang . . and there i was thinking i was adding to the community .
Sigh.
I was looking forward to getting rid of my n00b stabilisers

Is there any solution for the double space problem?
Cheers,
Steve.

A month ago, i tried to install Minimo on MDA Pro, but encountered insufficient memory problem.
Has it been solved? (I saw the flickr images and it seems that it's running on Jam not Universal..).

Best internet browser

I have tried a few browsers pie, opera, minimo etc and I find ftx Pbrowser best - small size not like those massive installs, fast and proper tabs. the only thing it does not do is download files but don't do that much any how. give it a go interested in your feedback
p.s. it also does'nt have the annoying keyboard pop up problem that pie does!
Far better than the recently released webby mobile (could not remember its name earlier ) and does go full screen and landscape mode and clear type for those that use it. U can tell I like this program
May we have some screenshot ? Thanks
Screen shots at this link
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=686
is this better then the Mini Mozilla browser? for some reason, it took FOREVER to load for me so i uninstalled it. it also took up a lot of space too.
Sorry hard to see how it took a lot of space its only 75kb in size. just place the file in program files on your storage card its a stand alone aplication it needs no install. mine loads in less than a second and favorites come up quicker than pie.
I think he meant the 10 MB mini Mozilla browser. I heard that this file (ftx Pbrowser) is only a shell around PIE. So the tabs etc are in the ftx Pbrowser file, but the engine is normal PIE.
Yep it is a shell for pie but I particularly like the tabs, makes it more like firefox. oh yes I see minmo took forever to load for me to - certainly not minimal!
Looks good, I'll try it!!
It workd really well, there is still need for improvment , but the tab browsing is well done and I would love to see it when its more devloped.

Has anyone tried PIEPlus lately? http://www.reensoft.com/PIEPlus/
This also has tabs, etc. I used it some eons ago but not recently. Doesn't say if it's WM5 capable.
I know ranchosteve there is room for improvement will try and contact developer see if he will reconsider finishing product off

Let us know if he replies, this is very promising browser! Needs finishing off but still useful.
I have a bed feeling the programmer has completely gone, the last version was over 2 years ago.

the latest version of pieplus v2 supports wm5 and works well on the wizard theres a 14day trial as well
anyone else tried this
r
Yes I have tried PiePlus on my Jasjar. It certainly is WM5 compatible and they say so on their website.
However apart from adding tabs I don't see much in way of enhancing the capabilities of the PIE. My personal opinion is that it is not worth the money. But again this is just my personal opinion. Best is you try the 14 day trial period.

new pieplus is great, except something weird happened, my address bar went away and no way to get it back...so to go to a site, i have to add to favs, and im not in full screen mode either, anyone know a work around?
I like the program but when I went to fullscreen mode I can get it bacc to normal. Any Help?

i think its the same problem im having...
ive been using mini opera as well as the built in pie....I think opera handles some sites better than pie...and uses less bandwidth
In case anyone cares... you can get the latest flash plugin (7.0) for ppc at macromedias web site
Ftx is certainly showing its age (I used to use it on some of my older devices). I have been using NetFront 3.3 (Trial) and it's been pretty good - not as fast as Opera Beta 2 but certainly faster than PIE.

Best VGA Browser

I am soon to get a XDA Exec, and I was wondering what the best VGA web browser for the Universal is. I dont want to have to make my whole system VGA, so it would be better if the browser had VGA options as default. Is there any way to use PIE in VGA without changing the whole system? Which is best out of minimo, opera and netfront?
Thanks
The best one out of these three is FtxPbrowser . (with the mui hack)
You may want to consider....
You may also want to look at Opera. The version for WM5 is still in beta though, but you can download and try it out. I'm guessing that the final browser will be released within the next month or so. The beta is free to try, but you'll have to pay for the final version. Great browser though.
Justin
Go with Opera. I've tried the three you mentioned, and while they're all quite ok, I found minimo to be painfully slow, and NetFront to often have problems displaying pages correctly. Opera installed and worked flawlessly right from the start.
yes Opera is best around at the moment:
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/index.dml
I had problems with font size using opera... some fonts are very big at some www places.. using netfront it seems ok. opera may be more compatible with JavaScripts, etc.. but I found Netfront more optimized to the mobile environment: virtual canvas size, fast rendering mode, etc.. it loads faster..
Thanks alot for the help. Does Opera need a VGA patch to run in VGA, or does it do it by default?
Thanks
Default.
On the OPERA site, it states the beta is going to end June 1st 2006. Does that mean after that date, the application will stop working unless we buy it from them?

yes, you are right. After that, they may release full retail version or they may release beta 2

Erm...beta 2 has been out for about two months now, and they've removed the limited duration thing.
I am testing out the PIEPlus V2.0 Beta1 on my Universal. Not bad with performance. It allows 2 views (normal vs column) and tab browsing, pretty convienent. No font issue like Opera. Worth a try...

I today downloaded their latest trial version. Maybe I am doing something wrong but it still does not support flash and java and has the usual limitations of the previous trial versions. Though the final commercial version will support all this.
There is also a news item on their site that the commercial version will be available by end of this month for US $ 29.80

I think we have not answered the original question yet (as posted in the very beginning of this subject).
Which web browser that will work in high resolution (VGA) even though the WM5 is running in normal QVGA mode?
Does either NetFront or Opera actually display the browser in VGA mode even the WM5 running in QVGA mode or it only works in VGA mode if the WM5 running in VGA mode.
I myself personally prefer to run my Uni in normal QVGA mode, but for certain application, I would love VGA. PocketXPDF for example, is excelent! Its actually display the PDF file in high VGA resolution even though the WM5 is running QVGA. Other excellent examples are: Logmein.com that can display full 640 x 480 remote desktop smoothly though the WM5 is running QVGA, and lastly, Google Map, also does the same thing.
So, back to the original question, which web browser that can do that?

What browser to use

Hi all
Got my first windows phone and was wondering what browsers you are using with it ?
Thanks
Robert
IE, the built in one. Works fine for me. Only thing that'll make me switch is if Firefox is realeased for WM Wouldn't that be great? Oh and throw in Thunderbird too and It'll be the best!
I hear Opera is very good for mobile devices.

The better one is Netfront wich allow javascript, textbrowsing and many functions.
I use it on Universal since more than one year and I installed it on P3600 with success...
Have a try
Could anyone provide an invitation to download deepfish (or post it on rapidshare?)...

Thanks tried it for an hour now and I'm loving it!!! (writing this with it ) Nice!
Opera Mini is amazingly fast. The fastest browser I've ever used. Too bad it need to run in java so entering text there's no autocomplete.
ThunderHawk is the most similar to a desktop browser and somehow their technology manages to fit about twice as much of a page on screen while still being legible. You pay a subscription of about 5 dollars a month, but after being away recently and having to use the PDA browsers a lot I was getting a headache using Pocket IE and Minimo, and the only browser which didnt make me claustrophobic was ThunderHawk.
They really should do a trial version of thunderhawk, because i dont believe many people would want to pay them before trial so its a very bad business model.
The problems with ThunderHawk are that it tries to usurp your operating system and it isnt like a normal PPC program. So, for simple short tasks I still use Pocket IE since it is less regimental.
I found Minimo to be pointless, Opera bloated, Netfront was ok, but pricey for not much advantage over an expanded PIE.

WM Browsers for the Shift???

What is the best browser for SnapView/WM on the Shift. Explorer is ok but there are a lot better mobile browsers out there. Has anyone been able to try the new Skyfire browser on the Shift? I have it on my treo 750 and love it. Just looking for something better than explorer. Any links or cab files would be appreciated.
I use Opera.
Wait for Skyfire... I think it is going to blow them all away from what I have seen since it went beta.
opera mini 4.1 beta....
opera mobile 9.5 is best even though it's beta
I have heard great things about opera mini 4 but I have not tried it yet. I have tried older versions of opera and the one that came with the HTC Advantage but have not been overly impressed with those. Except for the opera on the X7501 I have only tried these on my Treo (Opera and Skyfire)
remove Opera 9.5
Hi,
I have installed Opera 9.5 and it needs lots of space and crashes because it needs too much while working.
Now it seems to have installed files all over the place. Probably it will not delete all the files when I remove it.
Is there any method to find all the files it has installed to delete them manually?
It needs much too much space.
Space: In the windows folder there is a bis file called "provision.zip". Can I delete it? Or is it needed?
Are there any other big files which can be deleted?
How big is Skyfire, can it be used in Europe (Germany)?
Thanks!
S.

Its nice but It needs much memory to run. After surfing some webs the memory decreases to 2 MB and then Opera is closed
and INstalled over Real VGA makes the icons extra extra extra big. I will wait for a more stable version....

no news about safari or firefox mobile?

LOL! Yeah, I wrote a long email within Opera on my ebay account, tapping away, got to the end.... oops a typo, better correct that.... DOH! nooooo! the delete key becomes the back key. Yeah, plain stupid.
well DEL is used as back in every PC browser, but "should" be disabled when in a textbox.
Does anyone know of a fix for this? I currently select the text by holding down the shift and replace it with the characters I want, or go before the offending text and use Fn Delete. Its hard enough banging out some moan on a forum while on a train!!
definately agree with this one...REALLY annoying!
well that opera is way worse than it's desktop and mini counterpart
is there any way to uninstall it? and what's the best alternative for that?
USe MINI Opera or the Beta 2 - much newer Build
Load Opera Mini or the BETA of Opera 9.5
It is newer and faster
I'm using the 9.5 beta, it's much faster, and doesn't do that.
I looked at opera mobile website and it says that the latest version is 9.51b, is that's the newest? it has been from July!?
where to get the newest?
I have opera 9.51b installed on my Xperia and indeed it's much faster than the Opera 9.5 version which standard comes with the T-mobile branded version. However the standard installed Opera is still on my phone besides the new beta version. Does somebody know how I can uninstall the older version? It's not in the uninstall programm list...
waitin' for a good browser
since 3 years i'm waiting for a good browser for pocketpc or other small devices. but nothings happened yet. opera & iphones safari cannot handle sites with DHTML and javascript for a comfort surfing the web.
we can only hope for opera next versionen or the new pocket IE.
Strange! It doesn't happen on my Vodafone-branded X1 when I press the key slowly and carefully. But it does sometimes when I'm deleting more characters and press it repeatedly and quickly! I have originally installed version 9.5 build 2141 of the Opera.
for me, DEL acts like DEL - but ONLY in text mode!!! so everything is normal.
Sorry but the mobile safari Browser on the iPhone is very good. I can not understand anyone telling it is crap.
Sure some sites will not work - BUT THIS IS A MOBILE DEVICE !!!!
And on Windows Mobile the first browser which gives us a good experience in browsing is OPERA - still it is not as good as safari but it is good. Only not so nice that opera does not offer newer Builds.
There is beta 1 and 2 and the versions on HTC devices and on the X1 - they are all old builds so there is a big missmatch around.
THE ACTUAL OPERA MOBILE BETA is calles 9.51b2.cab
so the x1 operia is older than the official beta? strange cause the build number is lower...

Not SEX1's fault, bugs come from Opera, all devices use it have all the same old issues. We gotta wait for Opera mobile team to comes up with the next stable release.
