Ok, I give my jas jar hinge a month before it fails (based on nothing more than a feeling!). I reckon i must rotate, flip, rotate it about twenty times a day at the moment. Surely nothing is that well engineered!
What do other universal owners reckon? - PLACE YER BETS!
these days things are made to guarentee so i rekon a year
knowing my luck, the 12 month warranty will expire, then the hinge will break, approx 15 months.
I'm on my second JasJar.
The hinge lasted about 2 hours on my first.
Steve
ekk. how did it fail?
Hi
I really don't know.
When I first opened the box I was disappointed to see that the display portion of the clam shell was not sitting straight and I believe that this led to the failure.
I'm not sure if it was manufactured poorly or if my supplier had a play before sending it to me.
Steve
It will last longer. I fell asleep on my jasjar with the hinge in laptop mode and it got pushed forward. I ended up doing this twice and I put a lot of pressure on the hinge when I fell asleep (I've had my universal a couple week) It doesn't seem damaged at all.
I think it will last a long time
@155,
I know being a daredevil is cool n all but the next time could you please sleep somewhere far far away from the JJ?

errrrrrrr, are they *cough* splash-proof too?
ewwww.
I know the o2 XDA range actually come with 2 years warranty if that's of any help.
blimey - who keeps a pda for 2 years?
As you'll see from my post in "Broken Screen", mine lasted 48 hours. My supplier said that they had got 75% of the Jasjars they had supplied back again because of this problem. Not sure I believe that, but I am still considering whether to cancel the whole thing because of this problem. Shame, because I loved it for a couple of days!

My XDAII will be 2 yrs old at the end of the month, though I'd have replaced it 6 months ago if the Exec were available then!
having had a Sony Clie NX70 (yes it's a palm OS....) for nearly 35 months - which has the same type of hinge -- in fact I am quite sure HTC stole the idea from Sony for the betterment of us all  -- I am quite sure it can last a VERY long time.
My Clie did suffer a lot of abuse and even fell on concrete quite a few times - and it still works just the same!
I guess the hinge will last long enough to survive the replacement of the Universal device with a newer model.

The vast majority of us now the damned telco's are phasing out the 12 month contract and going for 18+ jobs.
PS: I have a Clie NZ-90 that has survived many years (got it Feb 2002), and it is built like an old Mercedes. Top notch longevity.

My jasjar is replacing my ipaq 3650, i.e. one of the original ipaq's and a Motorola phone that was about as old. I kept waiting until I thought there was enough of a reason, and with the HTC Universal I decided there was. I am hoping to keep my jasjar for as long as I've had my ipaq.
So I'll play PollyAnna, and say "My goodness, why on earth would the hinge fail?"

it gives me goosebumps!!!!
Mine is cracked.... in 3 zones.....one month of life......
Same here...a little crack near WiFi button. Have no clue where did it come from...
Same here....i have a crack above the volume button and one that started at the wifi button and is now all around in the front by the end button (WITHOUT DROPPING IT). It seems that a second crack is starting by the wifi as well!!! I am sooo disapointed in the build quality and after spending 500$$ and 2 months of ownership i am looking for my next phone...PALM----> very disapointed
Mine is cracked in 1 zone, bad product, 1 month
I found another split underneath the button of the volume
:'(
I had a crack from the display to the volume button and from there to the back, separating the small bar left of the volume bar. You could easily lift it with a fingernail. Unfortunately i dropped mine two times (on the street >.<) so it was pretty torn, but sending it back for repair to amazon, complaining about the crack and hinting at the reports about these cracks, they gave me a full refund and i took that and bought a htc touch 3g...i am much happier with that phone, 100+ better ootb experience...
Palm Treo Pro: say no to cracks!!!
I purchased my Palm Treo Pro on March 15th, 2009. Like many of you, I was excited to purchase this phone. Also like many of you, during my research of the phone, I came across numerous sites listing the spontaneous body cracks which appeared on the phone after a disturbingly short period of time.
I thought to myself, "I'm very careful with my phones...surely my being cautious will prevent any cracks from developing on the phone, unless I drop it, sit on it, Doc Brown distracts me and I accidentally leave it on top of the DeLorean as I approach 88 MPH, etc."
So as I'm leaving work yesterday, I pull my phone out of the case...and there are two cracks! Both cracks are located right above the send & end buttons. I couldn't believe it.
Now, many people say they baby this phone, and I am no different. It wasn't even a month! I contacted my retailer who, very nicely, pointed me towards contacting Palm directly. After getting transferred a couple of times, I was finally connected to a Palm CSR named Laura.
Since I was in customer service many years ago, I know how tough it can be and I didn't want to lay into her. I know firsthand how much it sucks to deal with pissed-off customers when you personally can't control what happened to them, nor the company rules which you have to abide by. So I was nice!
Laura asked for my name, if I had contacted Palm previously, the serial number of the phone, etc. She then said my phone would be repaired under warranty, but that it would take 3 ( as in the number directly following "2") weeks to get my phone back. Three weeks! Naturally I was taken aback and asked, "why is it going to take that long?!??!" She said that Palm is currently in the process of upgrading their repair capabilities and that, unfortunately, was the reason for the delay.
After talking to her for a bit longer, I realized that I wasn't going to get to anything further from her. She said Palm would send me an email within 24hours on the return instructions.
I have an older back-up phone in case of emergencies, but Palm doesn't know this, and many people don't have the luxury of a back up phone. Clearly I had enough money to buy a high-end phone in the first place, so it's not the end of the world that my smartphone has cracks in it. On the other hand, I'm not wealthy and I worked hard & saved so I could buy this phone. My last smartphone - not the backup I mentioned - was a T-Mobile Dash. I loved that phone and it sucked that it got stolen from the gym. I sat on, dropped, & accidentally stepped on the Dash, and the only visible damage was a few scuffs on the battery cover. And this is after 2 years of use. Now, I've had the Treo Pro for less than a month, have babied it, and cracks have already developed on the body?!?!? That's not right.
I'm going to contact Palm again today and see if I can't get higher up the corporate chain to speed up the repair/replacement process. I'm also debating whether or not this is even worth my time since I may receive a replacement with the same faults.
I have dropped, bumped, sat on, stepped on, skated on, and clunked around my treo pro, and it hasnt a single scuff or scratch, and not a single crack... You've now scared me into treating my phone with much much greater care.
My phone is from Bell, if that means anything, and it hasnt a single crack--god forbid-- yet.
Buyer beware?

I was reading on another major Treo site that it seems certain batches of the Treo Pro are suffering the most cracks. I'd have to conduct my own research before I'd call that the gospel truth, but it doesn't seem too far fetched. As far as TP's in Canada, I'm not sure what batch/week number they are, so hopefully Palm had already weeded out the design flaw with Bell's Treo Pros - and I feel it's safe to call it a design flaw at this point with the dozens of compelling testimonials I've read.
I too had the Pro with creaky case syndrome.. that advanced into cracks in the same places ppl have been talking about. I traded it in for a new one... and it started creaking slightly again. So, I bought a frkin case and now i don't think about it... that much. The Seido case is really nice tho.
Mine cracked in several spots after two months of normal use. I sent it back to Palm and they fixed it...bummer it took them 5 weeks Worst customer service experience ever.
I had my palm pro for two months now...If I didnt read this thread I would've never examined my device...In the back of my mind Im thinking not my phone...Well I discovered a hair line fracture above my wifi button...Ive been using an Seidio Innocase II since week one...Im speechless...
Cracks
I am a Treo Pro user from Bell Mobility in Canada and have had it round about a month now. After a good close inspection I find no cracks yet. Hopefully I won't!
Mine cracked after 1 month of use. Near power button.
Cracks on Treo Pro
Palm Support is the most unsupportive support I’ve ever seen. Having a Treo Pro I don’t recommend it.
I found cracks on my Treo Pro device less than in one months after using it. It wasn’t bogging me until the body started piling off next to the cracks and falling apart. Now I have a hole on the body of the phone. I was trying to buy a new shell for my phone from Palm. Guess what? It costs 199$ to get a new shell from Palm. They just do not sell shells. It was a bad choice to buy Palm.
Hey guys,
I'm a little curious but, if you're still using your FIRST X1 (Not exchanged, repaired, etc) and it has no build issues (cracks) at all, could you please sign in here?
Despite the prices dropping on Amazon.com (From 799 to 615 USD in less than two weeks), I'm still very curious as to how prevalent this issue really is. So please, show me the light!
Cheers.
i got a crack-free x1 bought in denmark, importet from UK.

i have used it in about a month now, and bought it used, so a little over a month.
bought it onthe first sunday of feb. dun rememebr date, unlocked, no problems. production date 08w49
Bought mine in November in the UK .. not long after it was released .. nothing wrong with it ..
Mine is crack free...but the battery cover got lots of scratches.
bought x1a from sonystyle.com in November. Still good.
I'm currently still using my first X1 But not for long anymore. Mine will go into repair tomorrow (just finished reverting it back to stock ROM & SPL). I have a crack at the stylus (I could somewhat live with it as it wans't that bad), and since the end of this week a crack at the batterycomponent (which is no longer acceptable).
I noted all the information I could retrieve from the phone (Serial numbers, IMEI, etc) and marked the Micro SD slot with a pen, as that will allow me to easily recognize if I get a new one or that they will simply put a new back cover on my current one
Still using my first Xperia, got it November of last year ..thinking about getting it replaced though 'cause the keyboard's bugging out one me...
Guys,
Thank you for all the information thus far, please, keep em coming!
Cheers.
I bought black X1i used, it's from December I think. When I got it, the keypad already peeled of sporadically and some very very very minor scratches on the battery cover and the edge near the mic hole... But no crack... And judging from the previous owner, he probably a very careful and tidy person... Just taking a wild guess because the X1 have 2 screen protectors.
The keypad peeling off issue is very very minor to me, in fact, I'm in the process of completely peeling off the keypad outer covering myself. I already completely peeled off the leftward keypad and it really is much better without the coating.
If (knock on wood) the crack issue doesn't rear its ugly head on my X1i, I'll probably replace the casing sometimes in the future, when true wear and tear came up... But for now, quite satisfied, considering how cheap I bought it
im still using my first X1. some scratches on the side due to my recklessness.
thinking of sending to repair cos some keys are getting harder to press. slowing down my typing speed...
Got mine since Nov 08, scratch free, crack free, no problems at all. I'm just lovin it. Production - 08w46.....
Had mine since Nov 08, scratch free, crack free. I take the batter cover off all the time messing with roms and still no problems. I do use a PD air case. Production - 08w45
pretty sure its a UK version.
had mine since 1 mth ago, accidently threw my keys and phone into the same pocket... now a bit of the plastic from the dpad is scratched off... its like mona lisa with a massive pimple ><'' and some minor scratches on the battery cover... apart from that, no cracks, 08wk49 one
I'm also still using my first Xperia, and have had no problems whatsoever.
Go for it
I've had more than one silver Xperias to date
No problems so far
But reading other's stories now I undersand why SONY broke up with HTC...
("quality issues" they stated, and 1/3 of the forum seems to proove it)

gtrab,
Aye. From the looks of it, purchasing an Xperia will land me a 30%+ chance of obtaining a crack within a month. Considering the fact that the Xperia I intend to purchase is unlocked and without a contract, the costs of repairs will likely not be covered. One way or the other, I foresee SE giving me the big turnaround when it happens.
The risks are so high and the chances so slim to even find a problem-free Xperia. I'll give it a couple more days and see how the votes go. Maybe it'll change.
Cheers.
i bough an x1 from UK first week in november,so 3months old and some days, and i only have a crack where battery is.on the side.it is not anoying.otherwise it is ok,no marks and cracks.i have black xperia, week 48.
Have you ever had/got an Xperia that has had a crack in it?
Just to see how many people have suffered from a crack at one point in their X1 History, Have you ever had/have a X1 with a crack?
Unlike the last thread this is if you have ever had a crack not if you have a crack at the moment just so we can see the how many people have suffered from cacking.
Also unlike the last one which was posted in december i am sure lots more people will have started to maybe get the crack
I have my X1 since january: no cracks, no keyboard issue
December 2008 here. No cracks, no issues, no sending for repair, no hardware problems whatsoever.
Had an 08W52 X1a for about 6 months. It cracked on the battery bay sidewall where the little crimp sits. Sent it in for repair to the SE service center in Bloomington and been waiting for over a month now.

Cracked case...sent it in....repaired....recieved phone....cracked again!
Will never buy another xperia! Sony Ericsson South Africa refused to replace the phone after first crack...but replaced the cracked housing...and IT CRACKED AGAIN!
5 !
Had 5 or 6 over the period SE sold the X1. Now I have 09W23 and SE changed the inside frame. Anybody with a date later then that with a crack?

Well, mine is on its way. I was told it would ship back to me UPS Second Day Air but for whatever reason, they decided to make me wait longer by shipping out UPS 3 Day Select on Wednesday which means, my phone is on a UPS truck from Houston to Lake Jackson which is about 55 miles, but UPS needs approximately 72 hours (between Friday and Monday) to cover the distance.
Initially I was told they were waiting on parts. Then the repair center told me they were waiting on a replacement phone and after requesting it twice in about 10 days, Sony Ericsson wasn't delivering it to them. Finally, after a bunch of BS from the cs reps and cs supervisors and cs managers at SE, they shipped my phone on Aug 06, at least that is what I'm being forced to believe, considering I haven't seen my phone since I sent it out for repair on July 02, 2009.

When I responded to the other polls, I said no cracks until I realized 6 months later that I should have said "No Cracks YET".
Anyway, good luck with both your phones.
I didnt have any cracks for the first couple of months, then i got the one by the volume rocker like every1 else. But the other day i noticed another one had formed further down the same bit of plastic along the side of the battery, right where the metal cover attaches, and now the cover falls off even more. Sorry i cant post a pic, i dont have a camera with fine enough detail.
Does anybody else think they have a similar crack?
I want to send the phone back, but Vodafone have stopped selling this phone so its even more complicated.

that sounds identical to what i had, i had three in total. the batt cover would not stay clipped on.
Vodafone dont send you a replacement, you need to send it off for repair and the same phone comes back with a new case. contact SE support the number is on that little black card you get with the X1, they will tell you where to send it.

I had my phone for about 6 months when I saw a little crack appear on the exact same spot as yours, where the cover attaches. After over 5 weeks since I shipped my phone out for repair, it is scheduled to be delivered today.
I guess you should do what Jasand suggests. Contact SE and when you send your phone in, make sure you somehow indicate where the crack is, because sometimes those cracks are easy to miss and SE would just send your phone back.
had to handsets both cracked in the same places (under battery cover on the top left and near stylus port).
on third handset now with new frame so we wait.
ps. my last handset lasted about 6 months till i got a crack, so just because u have had the handset a while does not mean u wont have a crack.
ps2. better to crack whilst in warranty than after (£50+ charge to have it fixed in the uk).

Thanks for the advice, I will def contact SE directly, just a shame i'm going to be without a phone for a month or maybe more :-( or do they send you a replacement while your one is away, this is used for work so i need a phone,
I have finally received my replacement X1. After buying the phone in November 2008 and having it in for 3 repairs last year SE finally decided it was time to give me a replacement instead of repairing, maybe because it was a load of problems this time.
Seems they've made a mistake by replacing my Silver X1 with a Black one but I'm not bothered, only issue is that the new battery that came with it is dead and needs charging. Very annoying since I want to get it Hard-SPLd!
Yeah, it's the Law in the EU to do that.
In my case I got the option of upgrading to the X2 if I paid the price difference between the two. It wasn't much, but I regret not waiting to get the X10.
This X2 is really pissing me off!
Cool news, bro.
I'm sure they've run out of X1's by now - how much was the price difference to get the X2?
i got X2 for free in the begining of february since they couldnt repair my X1. Didnt have to pay anything.

My xperia is now being repaired, also third time! Those f**king idiots cant get my headphone connector fixed. I have had to send it back two times because it came back to me broken. If they cannot fix it this time either, I think I will suggest a change to a HD2

I think it is possible for me too to change to a X2, the only problem is that no one makes roms for X2.. So I would be stuck in a stock rom.

It took them 3 attempts at fixing my headphone socket too, each time they had it for about a month.
I didn't get offered an X2, shame because I would've just sold it on ebay and got a HTC Desire or HD2.
I've had an HD2 for about a year before the touchscreen had a hardware malfunction and it stopped working.
Then I got a brand new HD2 for free and it has last me ever since.

18 month contract ends next week - still going strong
18th Nov 2009 and still going strong
18th Nov 2009 and still going very strong (WinMo 6.5, Android, Ubuntu...)
till the end
I had mine since 1 year. And still cant find one can bite it
I have mine since 14 months and it runs like new - it dropped mutiple times, one corner is dented and the accu cover is scratched but otherwise nothing to complain. It´s a great thing.
18 months old and still looks brand new, even after a couple of drops onto a tiled floor.
It is the only phone that I've known that has lasted so long at the top of the class in specification.
It lasted a week with its original T-Mobile UK ROM - just in case it went faulty.
The best thing about this phone is the geniuses on here who turned a great phone into an amazing phone.
14 months, looks new, works fine...well...enough.
18 month contract runs out in 20 days. It's been fine all the way through. Only visible damage is the coating on the battery cover has rubbed away bits, but otherwise has lasted everything, only reason I'm getting rid of mine is to get a sensation. Hopefully that will be the new HD2 as far as dev goes.
I had mine since november 2009.
I use my HD2 since 12/2009 (X-mas gift) and the phone looks almost like new. Well, I might need a replacement for the original leather case soon.
I was a little later, I have my HD2 since September 2010.
I am very happy with the phone, now running on MccMBoxmaX GS 7.0
My HD2 18 month contract ran out 7 days ago, got a new desire s. Have kept the HD2 and put it back to wm6.5 and use it now as an Igo promo sat nav, found igo didn't run to well on Android on the HD2, Having said that it runs very well on the Desire S for some reason.
Dropped the HD2 several time during its life as my main phone, but it still looks and works fine.
Probably flashed it nearly as many times as Paris Hilton has flashed to the Paparazzi.
It wouldn't have been half the phone it is now if it wasn't for the hard work of so many talented devs on here.
Hi.
Feb 2010 and still going like clockwork. As i have messed with linux etc. on my phone since dcordes put that first post on xda I now have a Bit of a dodgy power button but who hasn't.
Thanks to all the devs who made android and other linux distros etc work so well on this phone, would not have kept it for so long if it wasn't for them winmo just sent me mad lol.
won mine in a contest - lasted about 1 year and 4 months thus far!
Im on my third Hd2. First two with a cracked screen
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I have mine for 1 year now. After 6 months the screen started to look yellowish with blue lines. It never fell on the ground or something. So I brought it back and in 2 weeks it was repaired. They had to replace the main circuit board. Good service, great phone!
