Have you ever had/got an Xperia that has had a crack in it?
Just to see how many people have suffered from a crack at one point in their X1 History, Have you ever had/have a X1 with a crack?
Unlike the last thread this is if you have ever had a crack not if you have a crack at the moment just so we can see the how many people have suffered from cacking.
Also unlike the last one which was posted in december i am sure lots more people will have started to maybe get the crack
I have my X1 since january: no cracks, no keyboard issue
December 2008 here. No cracks, no issues, no sending for repair, no hardware problems whatsoever.
Had an 08W52 X1a for about 6 months. It cracked on the battery bay sidewall where the little crimp sits. Sent it in for repair to the SE service center in Bloomington and been waiting for over a month now.

Had two cracks, one on the side by the battery to the screen and another from the camera to the power button.. called up o2 and they sent me a new one that arrived the next day so i had two xperia's for a brief period of time. then just posted the old one to them free of charge.
Crack near volume control
My first one is from January and I had a crack near the volume control. Is off to repair/replace right now.
My second one is without any cracks/issues.

Got mine back earlier this week. They replaced the sidewall, and it is the new "improved" design. Hopefully you'll get yours back soon.
received a crack, actually its a piece of the chrome close to the camera button that fell off this morning...i am selling it, so i cant be bothered...may switch to what i never wanted TP2
Cracked case...sent it in....repaired....recieved phone....cracked again!
Will never buy another xperia! Sony Ericsson South Africa refused to replace the phone after first crack...but replaced the cracked housing...and IT CRACKED AGAIN!
5 !
Had 5 or 6 over the period SE sold the X1. Now I have 09W23 and SE changed the inside frame. Anybody with a date later then that with a crack?

Well, mine is on its way. I was told it would ship back to me UPS Second Day Air but for whatever reason, they decided to make me wait longer by shipping out UPS 3 Day Select on Wednesday which means, my phone is on a UPS truck from Houston to Lake Jackson which is about 55 miles, but UPS needs approximately 72 hours (between Friday and Monday) to cover the distance.
Initially I was told they were waiting on parts. Then the repair center told me they were waiting on a replacement phone and after requesting it twice in about 10 days, Sony Ericsson wasn't delivering it to them. Finally, after a bunch of BS from the cs reps and cs supervisors and cs managers at SE, they shipped my phone on Aug 06, at least that is what I'm being forced to believe, considering I haven't seen my phone since I sent it out for repair on July 02, 2009.

When I responded to the other polls, I said no cracks until I realized 6 months later that I should have said "No Cracks YET".
Anyway, good luck with both your phones.
I didnt have any cracks for the first couple of months, then i got the one by the volume rocker like every1 else. But the other day i noticed another one had formed further down the same bit of plastic along the side of the battery, right where the metal cover attaches, and now the cover falls off even more. Sorry i cant post a pic, i dont have a camera with fine enough detail.
Does anybody else think they have a similar crack?
I want to send the phone back, but Vodafone have stopped selling this phone so its even more complicated.

that sounds identical to what i had, i had three in total. the batt cover would not stay clipped on.
Vodafone dont send you a replacement, you need to send it off for repair and the same phone comes back with a new case. contact SE support the number is on that little black card you get with the X1, they will tell you where to send it.

I had my phone for about 6 months when I saw a little crack appear on the exact same spot as yours, where the cover attaches. After over 5 weeks since I shipped my phone out for repair, it is scheduled to be delivered today.
I guess you should do what Jasand suggests. Contact SE and when you send your phone in, make sure you somehow indicate where the crack is, because sometimes those cracks are easy to miss and SE would just send your phone back.
had to handsets both cracked in the same places (under battery cover on the top left and near stylus port).
on third handset now with new frame so we wait.
ps. my last handset lasted about 6 months till i got a crack, so just because u have had the handset a while does not mean u wont have a crack.
ps2. better to crack whilst in warranty than after (£50+ charge to have it fixed in the uk).

+1. I was told that replacement phones will have warranty up to 1 year from the manufacturer date code.

Hey guys,
I'm a little curious but, if you're still using your FIRST X1 (Not exchanged, repaired, etc) and it has no build issues (cracks) at all, could you please sign in here?
Despite the prices dropping on Amazon.com (From 799 to 615 USD in less than two weeks), I'm still very curious as to how prevalent this issue really is. So please, show me the light!
Cheers.
i got a crack-free x1 bought in denmark, importet from UK.

i have used it in about a month now, and bought it used, so a little over a month.
bought it onthe first sunday of feb. dun rememebr date, unlocked, no problems. production date 08w49
Bought mine in November in the UK .. not long after it was released .. nothing wrong with it ..
Mine is crack free...but the battery cover got lots of scratches.
bought x1a from sonystyle.com in November. Still good.
I'm currently still using my first X1 But not for long anymore. Mine will go into repair tomorrow (just finished reverting it back to stock ROM & SPL). I have a crack at the stylus (I could somewhat live with it as it wans't that bad), and since the end of this week a crack at the batterycomponent (which is no longer acceptable).
I noted all the information I could retrieve from the phone (Serial numbers, IMEI, etc) and marked the Micro SD slot with a pen, as that will allow me to easily recognize if I get a new one or that they will simply put a new back cover on my current one
Still using my first Xperia, got it November of last year ..thinking about getting it replaced though 'cause the keyboard's bugging out one me...
Guys,
Thank you for all the information thus far, please, keep em coming!
Cheers.
I bought black X1i used, it's from December I think. When I got it, the keypad already peeled of sporadically and some very very very minor scratches on the battery cover and the edge near the mic hole... But no crack... And judging from the previous owner, he probably a very careful and tidy person... Just taking a wild guess because the X1 have 2 screen protectors.
The keypad peeling off issue is very very minor to me, in fact, I'm in the process of completely peeling off the keypad outer covering myself. I already completely peeled off the leftward keypad and it really is much better without the coating.
If (knock on wood) the crack issue doesn't rear its ugly head on my X1i, I'll probably replace the casing sometimes in the future, when true wear and tear came up... But for now, quite satisfied, considering how cheap I bought it
im still using my first X1. some scratches on the side due to my recklessness.
thinking of sending to repair cos some keys are getting harder to press. slowing down my typing speed...
Got mine since Nov 08, scratch free, crack free, no problems at all. I'm just lovin it. Production - 08w46.....
Had mine since Nov 08, scratch free, crack free. I take the batter cover off all the time messing with roms and still no problems. I do use a PD air case. Production - 08w45
pretty sure its a UK version.
had mine since 1 mth ago, accidently threw my keys and phone into the same pocket... now a bit of the plastic from the dpad is scratched off... its like mona lisa with a massive pimple ><'' and some minor scratches on the battery cover... apart from that, no cracks, 08wk49 one
I'm also still using my first Xperia, and have had no problems whatsoever.
Go for it
I've had more than one silver Xperias to date
No problems so far
But reading other's stories now I undersand why SONY broke up with HTC...
("quality issues" they stated, and 1/3 of the forum seems to proove it)

gtrab,
Aye. From the looks of it, purchasing an Xperia will land me a 30%+ chance of obtaining a crack within a month. Considering the fact that the Xperia I intend to purchase is unlocked and without a contract, the costs of repairs will likely not be covered. One way or the other, I foresee SE giving me the big turnaround when it happens.
The risks are so high and the chances so slim to even find a problem-free Xperia. I'll give it a couple more days and see how the votes go. Maybe it'll change.
Cheers.
i bough an x1 from UK first week in november,so 3months old and some days, and i only have a crack where battery is.on the side.it is not anoying.otherwise it is ok,no marks and cracks.i have black xperia, week 48.
As briefly as possible.
My X1 (silver, 08W44) had two cracks since last month: near the stylus and near the battery housing. Got repaired for free (warranty) after one week. I get the phone back on monday 9th march. In the morning of 10th march I notice a small crack in the middle chrome plastic band; I get *angry* but I decide I can live with it. In the morning of 11th march (today) I notice another, very thin crack near the stylus (exactly in the same place as the first time).
I get *very angry* and decide i can NOT live with this second crack (I know it will get bigger), and write the following mail to SE.

Subj: Case problem
Good morning.
The case of my silver X1 is cracked once again, even if always used with extreme care.
I will have to take it one more time to be repaired and, as SE surely already knows, many users worldwide are having the same problem.
Is there a definitive answer to the issue ?
Shall users be forced to bring the phone to be repaired once a month, using the phone only for a few days until it breaks again ?
What is SE going to offer to the X1 users ?
Will there be a special offer to switch to another SE phone (i.e. a BIG discount to swith to Idou?).
Many thanks
After less than an hour I get a phone call by SE (how did they get my mobile number?); the person asked me to explain the case, wanted to know the IMEI of the phone and asked me when and where I was going to take it for repair. Also asked me if the problem was a varnish peel-off or a plastic crack.
I got very surprised (and pleased) of such care, and asked if SE was aware of the problem with the X1s in whole Europe (world?), and the guy told me that they would have started to get informed.
Will keep you updated.
Regards
i have cracks too sigh

Very intresting. Good idea about getting compensated, with something like a discount for Idou. Keep us updated as you said
sandrinopi, where do you come from?
It would be a lot of easier to get the phone repaired if SE officially acknowledges the problem.
Do you have a branded phone?
Good luck with the issue. Please keep us all updated. In the event that they are still not aware of the situation, you can always direct them to the major thread that we have here.

From Italy Dadaism, and my phone is not branded.
By the way (despite the content of the e.mail) with the SE guy I didn't mention any kind of discount in the phone upgrade, neither asked about an official position from SE. They only said that they will start investigating.
Anyway, seems hard for me to believe that SE (italians, at least) didn't know nothing about the issue until my email. Also consider that the first time, my phone was repaired in about a week without any kind of problems.
Lets see what happens.
Please look at the photo.
I just wonder is this just the protective layer of paint or some coating that I should peel off, any other user's experience the same ?
i have reported to HTC, waiting for reply... But I m not in the country that I ve bought the phone now... I wonder can I swap it like 6 months later if it's manufacturing defect.
Update 03/01/2010:
I got a reply from HTC:
__________________________________________________________________
According to the picture you provide, there should be slight appearance abrase in the button. Taking of this small layer of plastic would not affect the function of the phone. you may either leave it as it is or take it off. Thank you for your cooperation.
__________________________________________________________________
Update 04/01/2020:
I follow HTC instruction and peel/scratch away the coating of the HOME button only with finger nails.
The metallic effect's gone, and become just a normal black plastic key.
There are lots of micro lines on the button which cannot be seen on the photo.
It is still acceptable, just that I m not happy about a flag ship device's paint/coating came off so easily.
These are the photos
http://picasaweb.google.com/uccoffee.forum/20100104#
The button actually look nice without the coating in the photo comparing with the one next to it which the coating is coming off.
I m thinking should/can I ask for buttons replacement, or it is just a waste of time cos those buttons coating will eventually come off after excessive use.
i still love my HD2 , just a bit sad about so many problems
Update 05/01/2020:
i got HTC reply, nothing much they can help since I m not in Hong Kong.
Anyway, the girl from HTC said there was no one complain about the key's paint coming off.... I just wonder can those people who 's got problem and voted yes, would you mind at least send a complain letter to HTC please.
http://www.htc.com/hk-en/CS_Mail.aspx
yep my button is peeling too I had it 4 2 weeks
no problems here. hd2 is 6 weeks old ...
It's the metallic coating, if scratched away, it looks very plastic. ...
Simililar things have happened to my keypad in less than 2 weeks, and I always put it in its pouch. Guess we aren't lucky
not yet
I only use my HD2 since ~10 days, and do not have this exact problem, yet.
With my previous device (HTC Touch Pro) however, I had a lot of problems with peeling off coating (in TP case it was the plack paint peeling off the housing).
I also have the problem, that I use to buy my devices in Europe with WWE roms, and then take them with me to Japan, where I currently live.
This constellation is a nightmare for warranty return/repair with HTC, as they ask you to sent your device to where you bought it.
To avoid shipping my defect device helf way around the world, I last time decided to send my TP to HTC global repair centre in Taiwan.
They did the repair and they did it quick, but you don't want to know how much that cost me.
As soon as my HD2 starts loosing paint or coating, it will contact HTC global rapair in Taiwan again, but this time I will not accept to pay for the repair but push for good will.
The world gets smaller and smaller, customers do not stay in regions where they purchase devies. It is time for companies like HTC to adapt.
My girlfriend bought an Apple iBook in the US. In the menatime we moved to UK, Belgium and now to Japan.
She had warranty repair done to her iBook in all of those contires without an problem, so it should also be possible for HTC, if they just were a little bit more end customer oriented, but now that they try to market HTC as a brand, maybe it will come.
As a customer paying 500+ EUR for their products, I will not take NO for an answer.
Mine is actually worse than the photo in this post. I thought it was a temporary cover when it started to come away, like some buttons/screens have when a phone is brand new.
max1274, how bad is it? post some pic if possible
I only had my HD2 for 30 days....
I use my hd2 for five weeks, no problems so far. Hope to stay that way.
Its not even that bad, but yes very thin layers go off around the edges
Snap
Same here pal, it happened on my diamond as well.
**** happens i suppose
6 weeks... no problem
Damn.. Seeing things like these makes me want to go back to the shop and return it! Mine doesn't have anything but I am "EXTRA" careful with it but if it has happened to so many people it will probably happen to mine to. I cant stand paying 669€ (Portuguese value) for a phone that doesn't keep it together!
I get mad with these kind of problems!
Mine looks fine, had it since 24/12/09.
Touch wood it stays ok. Hope the guys with problems can get it sorted via HTC without niggles.
Please keep us posted on if you can get HTC to fix it.
Mines fine as well. But you know, the early batches of the HD had surface coating scratch, crack and chip problems. I bought my HD2 a month after they were first offered in the US, hoping to avoid the common problems, which were mostly ROM, but now I think maybe I dodged the bullet on this as well.

I was wrong! I checked my phone at night, and guess I couldn't see the minor peeling I have on the home button. Now I've seen in proper daylight I can see mine is peeling.
This sucks big time. Anyone have any feedback from HTC?
I've also sent a support request via email from the HTC website via http://www.htc.com/uk/CS_Mail.aspx , hope they get back to all of us soon.
Got a response from HTC
HTC are quick, within 2 hours I received a response to the peeling issue:
"We are very surprised to hear that you have an issue with our HTC handset.
If you are within 30 days of purchase, you can book our handset for a DOA (Dead on Arrival) via the retailer. Everything that came with the phone including the box will need to be returned. A DOA can only be booked if there is no mis-use or damage found on the handset.
If you are outside of 30 days, please call us in order to book a repair service.
http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx
Please note that the repair centre will need to see the device before diagnosing whether the fault is covered by the Warranty or not. We can not specify a cost until the repair centre has seen it first.
Please see full DOA/Exchange Procedure below if you are within 30 days of purchase:
We can have the device repaired for you, however if you wish to exchange the device and it is less than 30 days old, please return it to the point of purchase for exchange.
The retailer may not be willing to exchange your device depending on the terms of sale you have agreed with them, this is their right and HTC cannot intervene on your behalf.
If an exchange is refused by your retailer then we can still arrange a repair for the device, but we cannot exchange it.
In the event that a repair becomes necessary and you do not wish to arrange it with your retailer please call quoting your reference number (e2e ref) if you have one.
Thank you.
-If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you.
Best regards,
HTC Customer Support Team "
Why would we want to send our handsets for repair, only to have them fit the exact-same button unit. The same thing will happen again. Once we know HTC have manufactured new non-peeling buttons, that's when the repairs should take place. Painting buttons is stupid, why not just make them out of black plastic and have done with it.

Until they see them though, they're not going to think its a problem. Catch 22 all the way!
Has anybody had experience removing a screen scratch from their hd2?
i've only had mine for 5 days and its got a massive scratch on the screen, don't even know how it happened, i always keep my phones in a glasses baggy, my iphone is still mint after 18 months but today i was watching some youtube clips on my break and the screen was perfect, then put it on charge at work and when i came back to it it was really badly scratched, not sure if someone decided to have a look at it and dropped it while i wasn't there but needless to say i'm gutted, i was thinking of sending it back to o2 coz it has a few problems, random letters on typing and stuck messages, not sure if they'll accept it back even as faulty with this big scratch, any advice as to what o2 do with faulty phones? do they check them, bin them or fix them? it was bought over the phone btw, will they just write it off and send a new one because of the problems?
please help
I think you will struggle to get it replaced under warranty with a fat scratch, even if it didn't work at all, let alone a few issues that are (apparently) solved by updates.
Do you have any cctv at work? I'd be spitting mad and hunting for the culprit!
there is cctv but not in my department, and lots of people come in and out,
worst case scenario if o2 won't accept it back as faulty they'll just send it back as it is,
and if i'm lucky i'll get a replacement?
just been giving the screen a rub with some t cut and it seems to be helping with most of the scratch, there is just a 5 mm part that is deeper than the rest, do you think that would affect an exchange?
Maybe, you`ve got nothing to lose.....
Gotta be worth a try. Chances are they're only going to flash a new rom and ship it back anyway. Course, if you have insurance it COULD go missing....
insurance is what my work mate said, any recomendations for someone cheap but with full cover?
Just for the record, the random letters on typing and stuck messages thing probably won't be enough to get you a new device. These flaws are all over the place. HTC will tell you the 1.66 rom will solve those problems. And the 'not quite aligned screen' is also a thing that pops up here on a regular basis.
Hope you succeed.
Hello guys, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a very similar problem except without the scratched screen. The details are over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627374
Basically, I sent it to HTC and it came back much worse than it was when I sent it to them. What can I do now? Send it back to HTC again or would O2 be better? Is there a way I can get a new phone?
Thx.
If you return it to O2, they'll courier out a new one and pick the "faulty" one up at the same time, so you would get a new phone straight away - they did this with my first HD2 which didn't recognise SIM cards.
What they do with the "faulty" one once it's couriered back is anyone's guess. You could be lucky and it just goes in a big faulty pile to be sent back to HTC. I would deny that it was scratched if they phone you up about it, but that's quite naughty.
Awesome, thanks elyl .
My phone isn't scratched in the first place. Hope it works out for the original poster too.

what department at o2 did you use to get a courier exchange , what did you ask for and what problem did your phone have so that they exchanged it, cheers
sometimes the couriers themselves check out the goods if you are returning faulty handsets that have supposedly have no physical damage. ive had this happen to me a few times with my business units.
i would send it back to O2 anyway... if you have only had the handset for five days, explain that the screen is not "perfect". Its all about how you word it on the return form. Put down your other issues also.
This way when the courier turns up with your new handset and checks the goods and the return form (IF he has one) he will have no choice but to oblige.

Before I divulge this story I don't endorse this sort of thing.
My mate got the HD2 on an upgrade through O2, he sat on it within 24hrs and got a smudge on the screen, called them up and claimed there was a fault with the screen; which they then sent a brand new replacement. This promptly arrived and then by shear idiocy he managed to put it the through the washing machine the next day!
The device turns on but the back light has shorted, so you can see the GUI but only under strong light and it is basically unreadable. He will get insurance via O2 then claim next month saying he lost it. However the insurance does cost 10 pound a month; but still cheaper than 500...

hmmmmm....
shady
but lol
Am I the only one who finds the people who break their phones and then try to weasel their way into a new, free handset annoying as hell?
My local HTC center used to offer courier exhanges for all HTC products, but not anymore. I called 'em up the other day to get my phone exchanged and they told me they no longer do it because people were abusing the service.

no... you are not the only one who finds unscrupulous antics extremely irritating.
however,... some of the stories i hear are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh.
the irony of it is, that when i ordered the phone it went through ok and the money came off my card, then i got a text a few hours after the order, saying they were out of stock, i rang a few days later to see when they expected fresh stock and the girl i spoke to re ordered it for me, 2 days later 2 phones arrived at my house delivered as one shipment, i could have sold one phone but being honest i rang o2 and explained they'd made a mistake, i sent one phone back the next morning,
my phone also has the landscape/portrait problems in internet explorer and calender apps, where if i open in portrait and switch to landscape the screen flicks back and forth fast until i pull the battery, i planned to send it for an exchange anyway as my mate who has one at work has none of my phones problems, its just my luck it got scratched
Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to share my experience with sending my nexus one with an unlocked bootloader to HTC for cleaning.
Like a lot of nexus one owners, I started seeing dust under my screen after a few months (I always kept the phone in it's case while not in use). I called HTC and they sent me an email with a fedex delivery label. I sent the phone in on a Monday, and by the next day they had received it and posted a status that my phone was being diagnosed. A few hours later, the status changed to indicate it was being repaired. By Wednesday, they finished the repair and I received my cleaned phone on Thursday.
The best part: I had unlocked my bootloader and when I received the phone back the bootloader was relocked! This time, I gained root without unlocking the bootloader.
One issue however: My phone's IMEI is different that what it was when I sent it in. Not a huge problem, however some games I had no longer recognized my phone after I did a nandroid restore.
I hope this helps anyone who has a problem with dust under their screen and is reluctant to send it in for cleaning.

Interesting to hear that they cleaned it and returned the same phone. When I called them in may they said it will take two weeks and they will send me a refurb phone.
What was the process like? The Nexus I just bought form a dude from CL was kinda dinged up, which was okay, and the phone was perfect other than those few dings, I find out later(which he probably didn't care about but I do) was the back button isn't as sensitive as the other capacitive buttons and there's one spec of dust under the screen.
How do I start the process?
I had the same results a few months back, but I opted for a refurb instead of a repair. Told them I had dust under the screen, and the rep said, "OK, we have two options...repair or refurb." Not a single question asked.

Any deposit or hold on the account?
EDIT: Just checked the phone, It has definite dust under the screen near the top and bottom. I am a shoe-in for a refurb now.
Same exact story for me. I also had a few dings in the bottom shell of the phone, they replaced that as well. Which is awesome. I just know it's my phone because the IMEI is the same, as well as a small little scratch on the screen is still there.
Also shipped a Cliq in to Motorola to get the keyboard repaired. I shipped them both on a Tuesday, got the Nexus back on that Friday. Didn't get the Cliq back until the Friday after. That's ridiculous.
My serial number and wireless MAC are the same but the IMEI is different.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Grrr, I will have to wait almost a week and a half to do this, since that's when I will have the funds available for the process. . .I don't want to wait a week! Lol, I want to have this done by the end of the week.
@Tito You don't need "funds" to do the repair, just send them your phone and use another for awhile. I lucked out and upgraded to the Vibrant, and then got my Nexus One back the day I was returning the Vibrant. Since it sucks and all.. Haha.

I am wanting a refurb. Do they repair cosmetic stuff like dings or scratches on the housing aswell? If so I will just do that.

Yes, they replaced my entire casing which had a few small scratches and one large ding on the bottom where I dropped it on the sidewalk. It's pretty wonderful.

What was your situation? Unlocked bootloader and all? Did you mention it, did you get any charges, can you tell the whole story lol. I will have 500+$ on the line.
Nexus One Dev handset
I have the exact same issue with dust under the screen but on the lower left of the screen. I have two things working against me ;
a) I'm not sure if the handset is in warranty as it was given to me by a Google Staff member as it's a Dev phone.
b) there are superficial scratch marks from my keys on the casing which an engineer my assume are impact marks from a drop which is not the case.
what are my chances of it being repaired for free?
I would expect it to be out of warranty buy now if it came from a Googler.
I sent mine back due to my screen was impossible to use, sent it back, they replaced just about all inside parts, mother board and much more, I had the phone back in 3 days working great. HTC has done everything to make my phone perfect. I would not hesitate to purchase any HTC product, they are the best IMO.
Thank You HTC
I called HTC UK my phone is still in warranty period until December 2011. She also said the screen would be replaced free of charge as it is manufacturers fault if I wanted any additional repairs i.e. casing etc that I would have to pay for that, however I can still avail of the UPS pick up service. Price Quotation of £30 for new casing.
£30? That's bloody good!
I've my N1 off with HTC UK at present getting repaired, it for some reason stopped letting any SIM card connected to any network.
Sent it off last Thursday (24th Feb) and still not got it back yet. HTC repair tracking is telling me the repair is done but no sign of the phone as yet.
