KILLER Camera - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

The built in camera killed my data!
I was playing around with the features of the camera, then the screen started to turn whiter, and whiter, and whiter.
I poked the reset button to do a soft reset, but when the MDA restarted, it has actualy done a HARD RESET!
all my data is gone.
The contacts, and other things are in the outlook on the PC.
BUT, the call records are gone...
and I desperatly needed the number from it.
Let it be a warning to all!
DO NOT USE CAMERA!!![/b]

Vosh,
That has happened to me too. :x :x :x :x
You better look at your memory. I had so many applications installed at the time that happened to me. It crashed like the world trade center.
This is the problem of small memory with so much available and good applications out there. But the Magician works like magic for heavy phone users. A combination of a Phone with PDA. Not a PDA with phone.
make the best out of it. It is a great phone. OR Modify the ROM. + 27 MB.

I am sorry to hear you have lost your data.
Is there any program to restore backup/data from the pc?
And, there is a little internal application called xBackup. I think we should use it regularly.
Regards,
Arto.

It's HW failure
I have the smae problem with my Jam. Firstly, the power on/off button changed to hard reset button. I mean ervrytime I press the power button, it automatically hard reset my Jam. After I got it serviced, the camera shot continuously right after power on. Finally, the serviceman said it was the circuit error and could not be repaired and I got it replaced. So hope you can have it replaced, too.

Dont go in for the replacement yet... set your camera's default memory location to internal memory the delay in writing to SD Card sometimes creates problem

weird things do happen
this is the first time i heard of the camera doign that though
don't let it deter you too much
i recommend sprite backup
it saved me more than one time

Bought a Qtek 9000, first impressions & questions

I bought a Qtek 9000 a couple days ago and I'm pleasently surprised. I heard all the bad stories about the MDA PRO, O2 Exec, ... so I kind of feared the worst. But I took a chance and bought it anyway and the Qtek doesn't seem to be as bad as the other versions.
It does ring when I get called and the ring isn't late. I didn't notice any difference with my previous phone. So that's positive, I didn't change the ringtone on the other hand, so I don't have a large mp3 as ringtone.
Second, it is stable. Haven't had a crash, hangup, program error. Nor does it crash when I receive a SMS. I have received about 10 SMS'es though, not alot i know. The device is pretty snappy, I never have to wait a few seconds when opening programs or changing the screen-rotation. Also when I bring it back from standby, I don't have to wait at all...
I did a soft reset after setting the regional settings and the phone has been on for allmost 5 days. No major RAM issues, although the free RAM is shrinking, stopping applications in the memory-settings does free up some RAM, but not all. When I first booted the device I had just over 30MB free, and it has slowly decreased to about 18-19MB. I haven't installed any extra programmes on it.
So I might consider a soft reset when it reaches 10MB or so. But my question is, is a soft reset bad? Because you can't really shut the device off, you can only put it in sleep/standby. So rebooting it like a normal pc isn't possible. Does a soft reset damange any programs, settings... that's my main question.
Also, what's the best way to keep the battery in top-condition. Charge it when it's at 20% when the device tells you to charge it. Or charge it when you can, because it doesn't matter when you charge...
And one last thing, MSN Messenger doesn't draw the conversation window that well... Sometimes the part of the screen where your received/sent messages are shown is really small (about 3 lines high) and there is a large whitespace under the field where you type your message.
Thanks a lot to the guys at this forum for providing me with the most reliable info about the device, so I knew what I was getting.

PS: I ordered a Brando Screen Protector Plus, any comments, things I should know before I put it on the screen?
This is a good post to read first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32218&start=150
Here you will have an is\dea of what to expect between a QTEC and an O2 NEW ROM version have to offer.
Thanks for the link, but I wasn't really looking for a new ROM. As I'm quite new to the Universal, I prefer getting to know the device itself better, before I start doing the more 'professional' things. Besides, I don't have any major issues with the Qtek ROM at the moment.
I just wanted to know a little more about soft-resetting the device and how to charge your battery for best longterm performance. Because I find the manual quite minimalistic.
To soft reset: YOU RETAIN YOUR SETTINGS.
1) Just press the small pin hole found at the back of the Universal right beside the USB plug.
To hard reset: YOU LOOSE YOUR CURRENT SETTINGS. BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS.
A) Method One
1) Go to Start.
2) Go to Programs.
3) Go to Clear Storage.
4) Type in the code: 1234
5) Press YES.
6) Wait for the automatic reset.
B) Method Two
1) Press and hold the two keys with this mark (-) at the same time found at the top most part of the keyboard.
2) While pressing these 2 keys, press the pin hole found at the back of the Universal for 1 second.
3) You will notice a reset and a blank screen will appear.
4) It will prompt you to either press X or 0.
5) Just choose which one you prefer.

1) No, a reset both hard and soft does not damage your Universal. A soft reset to clear out the memory is good to speed up things better.
2) The best way is to leave it charging for more than 16 hours the first time. Unplug and use it till it drops to around 15% then charge it fully again, this time it does not need the 16 hours. Just wait for the green light indicating a full charge. After following these first two, just keep it plug-in before going to sleep at night making sure you got a full charge for the next morning.
3) I don't know about Brando's screen protector but I used Proporta's screen protector which included a wipe cloth and a screen spreader. I've had my screen protector on before I started even charging and using my phone. Another tip is to use a small peice of tape to take off some dust or specs that might have stuck on the screen before applying the screen protector. Sometimes even with the wipe there are still dust residues. You can also use the tape to clean the side of the screen protector that is going to stick on the screen.
Isn't a soft reset similar to pushing the reset button on your desktop? So couldn't you loose cached data that is in the RAM, because it wasn't written to ROM yet?

I had never lost any data after a soft reset. It free up unused memory that was being kept by the system for faster processing. Plus WM5 has persistent memory now. May be that was the difference?
So in fact, you can't shutdown a Qtek? You can put it in standby modus, but the phone is still working then. And resetting it, is just rebooting it. So if you want to take out your SIM card, you have to take the battery out while it is actually running?
You actually can turn you device off, with a little help of some small programs, like PsShutXP for example.
Hmm, thanks for the info. I will look into that one, but at the moment I'm still very hesitant to install any third party applications on my 6-days old precious.
One other question, does the led blink orange when you receive a SMS. Because now it doesn't, it blinks green, like normal. But I seem to remember the first I got it, it blinked orange. Or am I confused.
@emmerman
You are right you can lose data. I have lost emails and other users have reported loss of WEP keys etc. But I have never had this problem with Symbian devices.

Can anyone answer this one.
Go to Start>Settings>Sound and Notifications>Notifications Tab>Choose the event you wish to correct.
The changes in any settings never occurred on mine nor any type of freezes. Something I am glad about.
What I did when I first turned on my device, off from the box or right after a hard reset, was to go through those settings and made sure they are all configured the way I want them to notify me. This is the only difference I could possibly think of why others have disappearing settings on notifications.

Will not return from standby - need Soft Reset

Hello Everyone,
I have a Cingular 8125 with the original 2.25ROM. Every once in a while (about once a day), when I try to press the power button to return my phone from standby, the screen will not light. The green LED light showing that the phone is powered on still keeps blinking, but the screen will not turn on, and I have to soft reset my phone with the reset button on the side, or remove the battery in orer to get my phone back working.
I have done a hard reset and this problem has not changed. Does anyone have this problem, or seen a fix for it? I am thinking it might be a problem with some of the reg tweaks I have done, or with a program.
The problem programs I am thinking may be contributing to this are Wisbar Advance due to memory leaks, or PPCProfilesPRO. The only real reg tweaks I have done are Molski's Customizing tweaks and the A2DP hack. Could it be a hardware issue? Any help would be much appriciated.
Thanks.
Sorry I cannot help more, but I remember Wisbar Advance doing that to my h6315 WM2003 based device. Then again, it would sometimes do it on it's own too (but very rarely w/o W.A). I hacked it to make A2DP work, and it did not cause such problems on it... but again, totally different device, but similar CPU.

NEED HELP MDA GOING CRAZY(willing to pay)

My MDA IS GOING CRAZY!! Every time I press the power button to take the phone off of the standby mode the phone seems to randomly just open up contacts and then try to delete one of the ones that are first on the list. Also the two soft buttons aren't working. the keyboard, some of the letters aren't working either, and every time i press the left softkey on the keyboard the menu on the right always opens up when I am on the internet. For some reason it just started acting like that when I increased the size of the cache. This one time all the keys worked for like 5 minutes the other day, then they went back to not working. I already did a virus scan and nothing came up, so yea. I am willing to pay if needed to the person through paypal, whoever helps me fix up my mda. NEED HELP!!!!
Have you tried updating to a newer firmware?
Are there any magnets in the immediate vicinity of the MDA?
I know it sounds crazy but even the magnet on the included t-mobile case can do things like switch the screen to landscape or bring up the calender.
It's just a thought and a possibility.
nope no magnets, and the rom is the 2.6 one, the newest rom, dunno what wrong with the phone, im willing to pay to fix it up. whoever helps me fix it up, i will pay them.
if i were you, (thankfully i'm not because i have had enough problems with my XDA!! lol) i'd do a hard reset, but i'll assume you can't do that because of the mind of its own issue, so power down the phone, and leave it on charge so there's atleast 50% battery in the phone. meanwhile, goto the t-mobile website and get the latest rom (or re downlownload the rom that's already installed...2.6 i think u said?) and try to upgrade using bootloader. todo this, hold the camera and the power buttons until a funny screen comes up, run the update utility, and then plug in the phone to the firewire cable (then onto the usb) on the first screen of the program (if that makes sense). then run the update utility and that should work.
there's no reason why it shouldn't. i had a similar problem with a se w800i about a year ago, and it turned out a button was stuck down, so check that.
i hope you get it sorted, as i kno how frustrating these phones can be.

Ok, you need to give more info. What IPL/SPL, Radio, version, etc. etc. What other steps did you follow? Downgrade to 1.08 unlock? CID unlock? Upgrade to 2.26? Then flash whatever ROM you are using...and which ROM is it? What other apps have you loaded? How old is the phone? Who is your service provider? What is your bank account number? (ok maybe we don't need that one haha) What SD card are you using? Have you dropped the phone?
--M
uuh, i haven't dropped the phone at all. Its unlocked, and I changed the network settings so that I get unlimited internet and other data transfers for free. I have Tmobile prepaid. Other than that I am going to try to hardware reset it, tried it already, it didn't work. So, I will try to update the rom, the phone is unlocked, so if I update the rom hopefully it wont become locked again.
It won't become locked again, it sounds like a hardware problem it is most likely a button or key on the keyboard is getting stuck and/or shorting every so often causing this behaviour.
Have you recently loaded any apps? Maybe changed the key settings? Deleted a file by mistake?
How large did you make the cache? What program did you use to change the cache? Did you change anything else besides the cache?
uuh i made the cache to 4 MB and I did change the settings for the IE but I changed them back, I used Resco Registry Editor, also I went to this website to find the registry tweaks http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/
Then I went to the 2 performace tweaks:
http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/speed_up_your_pocketpc
http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/increase_performance_speed
I also did this one on the IE using Resco Registry Editor:
http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/change_pocket_internet_explorer_6
Other than that I haven't done any other ones, I tried overclocking by using a software called Omap Clock, but that software sucked, it would be overclocked for a while, and it would return back to the default speed whenever I would press the power button to put it on standby.
if i were you..
if you are willing to pay for those who ever fix you phone, i'd rather pay my nearest service center to fix my device.

Volume down button defective

Hi!
I received my Touch HD on friday (German version) and I was initially very happy with it (no dead pixels, etc.) However, after playing around with it, synchronizing with the PC, etc., it started acting stranegly somtimes: the volume screen would come up without any apparent reason, it was not responsive, and so on.
Finally I discovered, that the "volume down" button is defective: sometimes it's not working at all and sometimes it's stuck at the pressed state, which, of course, renders the device unusable. Removing and reseating the battery cover did not help, neither did a hard reset (which was only possible via software, because the combination vol up + vol down + power doesn't seem to work either).
Obviously, my device is defective. Great... so time to get a replacement - after only 2 days! Nice build quality - congratulations HTC!
Regards!
I have not this problem ....

judging the entire assembly line/company based on one device is naive. if you disagree, you can try to find me a company makes products of this sophistication (cars, electronics, whatever) that has 100% quality.
one suggestion is to do a hard reset (volumn up and down button pressed simultaneously, when reset msg comes up, press volumn up). and use it for a couple days before you install or modify any settings. then you will know if it's the device or a crappy program that messed up your phone.
Hard reset doesn't work on my device - probably because the volume down key doesn't work? There is, however, a way to trigger a hard reset per software, which I did. The problem still exists unfortunately. So it's definitely a hardware problem. The device has just 3 buttons and already one of them doesn't work - I would call that disappointing...
Strange thing is, that sometimes it works normally and I was hoping the problem just went away. But suddenly, the button is stuck again or doesn't work. I've sent the phone back to the dealer and I'm asking my money back. I don't want to risk that it's beeing sent in for repair which could take weeks and maybe they don't even fix the problem...
Regards!

i am not sure if the software-triggered reset is a true hard reset or it's just a merely storage erase. may be it is. but i dont' know.
in anycase, yes it is disappointing, can you do an exchange with the vendor? that may be the best route and simplest for now, rather than risking it to fix it yourself.

[Q] Treo Pro vibrating problems

Hi there,
I hope to find someone helping me to solve my "little big problem" :
when a call comes in, and my treo usually vibrates in interval, (i mean it vibrates, stops, and vibrates again) it keeps vibrating until i accept or decline it.
it is not a hardware issue, because it does vibrate with interval when receiving a new sms.
it cannot a slightly problem with the software, because the problem exists too, after a hard-reset is done.
the problem was solved ago, when changing the ringtone, but after it came back, no change in the preferences solved my problem, and i began to get frustrated...
the palm support told me to send my palm to their service center, but my palm is bought new at ebay, so i cannot verify the date i bought it...
i think, because the problem was solved once, it can get solved twice within software, but how?
maybe if i would reflash the windows mobile system... actually it is original, no flash was done on the device.
when reflashing it could solve my problem, it would be great, if someone could help me flashing it, because i never flashed a winmob device...
i would need a original untouched ROM, if possble too...
or does someone have another idea? please help me!
Quite a bit simpler than that. All you need to do is a hard reset.
Remeber to backup everything you want. I would suggest activesync, or if you have sprite backup, backup everyting except sysem settings (documents and contacts, appointments...)
Once it is all backed up, simply hold down the red button on the front. While holding the red button, use stylus to reset phone. Then it will say reset? Press up on d-pad and you will be set.
Nope, srry... like i allready wrote: "it cannot a slightly problem with the software, because the problem exists too, after a hard-reset is done."
i allready did a hard reset, and the problem is still there...
Any more Ideas?
Now, (20.04.) the Treo's LED does not light up, when connected to charger.
Sollution!
Okay, finally i got a sollution without reflashing the device!
The combination with HookMGR (nedded for next)
And VAlert 2.21 let me configure the vibrating problem...
So, it's running all fine now
Love Palm! Love Treo!
vAlert 2.21 Download Location
Do you have a download location for vAlert 2.21? I have a Treo Pro that I am trying to reconfigure the length of time it vibrates. It stays on continually when I receive a phone call and it is really loud in meetings.
Thanks.
