GPRS Failure: Error message - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Every time I connect to MOBILE WEB GPRS or WAP NETWORK GPRS, I get the following error:
"Cannot connect for an unkown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again."
With a "Settings" link and a Dismiss button below that, in a bubble pointing from the Network/Coverage bars logo on the taskbar.

Please? Anyone?

Hi,
Just need some clarification here - have you ever been able to access GPRS on this or any other mobile device?
I say this because I had exactly the same problem when I purchased my XdaII. Despite several (lengthy) calls to 02 Customer Services, each one accompanied by a request to activate GPRS (and an assurance that it would work within 24 hours), nothing happened.
It turned out that I was on an old, non-GPRS-enabled (but cheap!) tariff. Once the tariff was changed, everything worked fine (but after 5 days, not 24 hours - the XdaII just suddenly burst into life and I could suddenly email and everything!).
I got a refund for my calls to Customer Services, too...
Cheers
Gadget

Well mate, I've been using it on this tariff before.
I'll explain:
I was happily emailing etcetera, then an unfortunate incident occured where my screen cracked, so I sent it off to the service centre.
£150 later... I had a new screen AND a hard-reset
New SIM too... because I lost the old one in the mean time (XDA Service centre are seriously [email protected], it takes them 3 weeks not the quoted 3 days).
So New Sim and practically new phone... I had no GPRS
Bollocks bollocks bollocks.

GPRS On O2 UK, Y is it not working?

Hi all, I hope someone can help with this,
I have tried to all O2 using 100 (but this keeps getting disconnected automatically) so I have to call as 0845 number which uses my minutes + I was waiting 30 minutes to speak to someone and when i eventually did get through they hung up (I am well Pi***d off with o2). Anyhow
I want to connect to the net using GPRS, however no GPRS symbol is displayed and if i try, i get a message saying "No moden at above number" any help would be great.
Cheers
Matt
Right, couple of things to suggest.
Firstly (and I know this sounds stupid)....O2 have recently installed new call centre handling "things" which SHOULD route your call more efficiently but as they have been put in by IBM (also, responsible for more recent "good inovations" in O2) the bits aren't working v well! - trust me as I speak from experience and "from the horses mouth" - I work for them!
So chill when you do get through....the staff on the phones are getting major grief from customers, dealers and fellow staff members (mainly store staff) because it's taking ages......It's not their fault!!
Anyway, back to your problem.....you haven'y said whether you got a new connection or an upgrade.....if it's the latter did you ahve GPRS on your previous phone and did it work?
If it's a new connection then GPRS hasn't been provisioned for some reason (although it can tkae 48 hrs max from connection to go through), same goes if it was an upgrade and you never used GPRS on the old phone.
Give me the answeres to these questions and I'll give you my best guess!
Mike
Check settings
I use this site for settings:
http://www.filesaveas.com/index.html
I would also suggest that you check that GPRS has actually been enabled by O2 for you. I had problems with MMS not being enabled although I HAD asked for it.
Thanks Mike for your responce, and I promise not to go ape at your colleagues.
I have a new account with O2, connected today, however seems strange that it could take upto 48hrs to get GPRS active, I was recently with ORANGE and as soon as I activated the phone (a SPV) the GPRS was active there and then. Ah well I will wait the 48hrs and hopefully it will come active sometime soon.
As an O2 employee, you may be able to assist on this query. As a paymonthly customer on O2 400, I am supposted to call 100 from my XDAII to call CS, but when I do this I get disconnected automatically as if the number is dead, any ideas?
Many thanks for your help.

An update on the aboe. I have managed to sort this problem out, I did a soft reset and when rebooted I noticed the phone settings were on Germany, changed it to UK and GPRS works fine.
Matt
for anyone searching with this problem
MODEM NOT FOUND AT DIALED NUMBER
1. phone CS on 0845 and make sure GPRS is on! (APN provisioning for mobile web access (you can 'check' on the 100 number, but they can't turn it on for you)
2. 3.30pm is the 'switch over' time, so soft reboot after this time each day (
up to 24hrs) ...... phone again if still not on !
3. GERMANY is default if you go to MY XDA - connections. it will always be on Germany. but the wizzard should of set it to UK when you first set it
Do you have the correct settings for wap over gprs, email over gprs using O2 payg sim with free gprs pages and wap.
Is there any portal to get the settigs to the O2 phone directly?

GPRS wont connect

All of a sudden, my GPRS wont connect now. I get the message "the answering modem has disconnected".
I haven't changed any settings, so wondering if anyone else is having the same trouble? Maybe it's a network thing. If not, could someone post their settings please so I can check them. (for O2 UK)
Cheers

At least ONE of you must be on O2? Since the phone is EXCLUSIVE to O2
I've recently had a similar problem myself and today have used the settings here which seem to work

I got it working. I changed it to Class 10 instead of Class 8, which did the job. Dunno why it stopped working in the first place though.
I've got another problem now. MMS doesn't work. It won't let me send, and when I receive I get a web link rather than the actual message. What am I doing wrong? A couple of years ago I heard there was a problem with O2 Online contracts which meant you could only use either GRPS internet OR MMS, but not both. Is this what I'm encountering?
I think that normally happens when you can't recv mms messages because gprs and mms aren't available on an account at the same time. The new MobileWeb service does support both - but you have to ring to activate it.

Vodafone connection problems

Folks, please forgive the intrusion of a non-developer, but I come cap in hand for some wise and informed advice -
I want Internet access to browse to my firm's MS Exchange server for browser-based e-mail.
Took delivery by courier of a VF 1605 on Monday, swapped SIM over from old Nokia 6230i and turned it on: no Internet browsing to any site. Eventually, after many calls to customer support got the setup instructions: settings, connections, ISP/add new modem connection, contract Internet, cellular line GPRS,3G, Intranet, Web, Web, Finish.
Still no connection - just an error message: Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.... (you get the picture.) And so we go off round the houses again.
VF customer support first thinks it's a SIM problem (old one not compatible with new phone) so delivers a new one. Phone fails to work just the same. I try the new SIM in another new 1605 at a VF shop. Same result - no connection to any Web site. I then download vodafone_settings.cab from here and install it on my phone. Still no change. Same result - Cannot Connect. VF now think the phone is faulty and will swap it when they have stock. But I am not so sure.
Can two 1605s be faulty in the same way or does this smack of general muppetry by me?
With thanks for your patience!
KevinF.
Hi replace intranet with internet.
Many, many thanks
Bri.s -
I have done so and the 1605 now connects. I am so grateful. Many thanks.

Wmobile Network cards problem fixed?

Hey, i'm currently using WM2003 on an xda2i.
What is exceptionally frustrating is if I want to use wifi internet, I have to to to
Start-> Settings-> Connections-> connections-> advanced and change BOTH drop downs to WORK NETWORK.l If I want to use GPRS internet I have to do the same but select MY ISP in the first drop down. Switching between communication methods is extremely annoying :S
Also, if I connect to GPRS and leave it on it auto disconnects quite quickly, (10-15 mins) and then the phone needs to be reset inorder to reconnect.
My question might seems illy, but can anyone tell me if things work PROPERLY on pater versions of windows mobile and on the blackstone as I've never used anything except WM2003.
Thank you for your help, I WANT this phone.
.........Ib a n e
The problem you describe is not present on my Touch (Elf) so I'm sure it's been fixed by now. In fact, I didn't have the same problem even on my Exec (Universal) three years ago.
Fantastic! thank you for the input. I'm slowly realising how much I am putting up with in my 2i. I love it, but I need a change, and I don't really want an iPhone.
Might sell my SOUL to afford a sim free Touch HD and this was a stumbling block.
Thanks for clearing it up
I'm also just wondering whether I can justify buying SIM-free and a SIM-only contract from O2, against the cost of a phone on contract.
SIM-free for 18 months:
Phone - £500
SIM card - £20 per month (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £860
On contract for 18 months:
Phone - £100 (guess based on Touch Pro)
Monthly cost - £35 (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £730
There's a huge difference in cost and I'm not sure I can justify it just to get one today instead of waiting a couple of months until O2 release the Touch HD on contract (assuming they do). But I really really want this phone. (In fact, mainly I really really want to leave Orange and go back to O2, whose network actually works where I live.)
To add further info to your original question, I've set up seven email accounts in my Touch and they check for new mail periodically (some accounts every two hours, some every 30 mins). If I've turned Wi-Fi on then the connection happens through Wi-Fi but if I'm out of range or Wi-Fi is off then the phone will automatically and silently connect to GPRS and check emails that way. I never need to touch anything. Once it's connected to GPRS it stays connected for hours with no problems.
The only slight inconvenience is that to send an email the two connection methods (GPRS and Wi-Fi) have different SMTP requirements. I can't send emails through Orange's SMTP server while connected to a Wi-Fi network, and I can't send through my ISP's SMTP server (through my home Wi-Fi connection for example) when I'm connected to the internet with GPRS. But this isn't a limitation of Windows Mobile; my laptop is just the same. My solution was to set up my own SMTP server through which I can authenticate to send emails regardless of how my devices connect to the Internet.
mm... yes hadn't thought about the SMTP but I have experienced this before. It is a slight annoyance, but a necessary one I guess without setting up your own server.
I'm glad to heard of your good checking experiences with the email.
mmm.... i'm not a fan of buying contract and using contracts. I prefer to try to buy SIM FREE outright, and if possible Avail of a simplicity contract with vodafone, which only requires one month warning to leave.
The reason I choose Vodafone is because O2 block MSN messenger... and I'm unsure about skype (not that I use it a lot, but I don't like being TOLD by my network what I can and can't use.)
I have no idea about vodafone 3g hsdpa reception though, might have to look into it.
Yeh, I swap from northern ireland, to southern ireland frequently, and as I am currently looking for permanent work, I don't know exactly where I'll end up....thus, contracts are not suitable for me right now.
I did see the Touch HD in a swiss shop for about 469 sterling. think it was www.digitec.com
I've emailed them to see how much shipping would be.

o2 Germany Stealing my Money???

Hi guys ... got a question ...
I m in Germany at the moment visiting some friends and for that purpose I got my old German o2 pay as you go sim-card out to use for the time that I m here. I m normally on vodafone contract in the Uk.
What happened is, I put the sim card in, working fine - just like it did in the Xperia last Xmas when I was here - however, then I topped up my phone (15 Euro), I sent 2 text messages and made one phone call (2 minutes) and the next morning when I woke up, I had a text message saying that my credit is down to Zero.
So I called o2 to ask them what happend but because this is a sim card that I got from a friend, and which has gone through I dont know how many hands, I couldnt answer their security questions. So they refused to give me any information.
What I did then is, I went online and registered my phone number on the o2 website - this way I get access to my pay as u go bill with a complete breakdown of all charges. However, the charges that took the money from my account are not listed there. Or to be more precise, they are listed there but it doesnt say what they money was taken for.
So for example it will say: 35 minutes - 9.71 Euro - but the two fields that are suppossed to tell you what the charge was for are blank.
So I m not sure what to do now. As I said I didnt have this problem with the Xperia last christmas when I was here. Moreover, although I think that it is impossible for the Xperia to use any internet services as it is pre-configured to vodafone UK, I nevertheless disabled all the data connections in the comm manager including microsoft direct push.
Is there any way that the phone could have connected to the internet using sim card settings or something? I checked under my connections and I ve configrued it to use "My ISP" whenever it wants to connect the internet. This is correct isnt it?
Any ideas what this could be? Since I m not gonna get information from o2 I was hoping somebody on here may be able to help me
Thanks for the time guys
Amano
All i could suggest is installing and "nodata" cab so the xperia cant use and date - search for it in the forum - that seems like the sort of thing it could be - i dont think u can steal from an account or anything though but if it isnt listing the other stuff you are using it could be a problem with o2? i guess u need to ring them too to see whts going on and ask ur friend foir the security info
after carefully monitoring the phone it does seem to be the contract internet that causes the charges which - despite data connections being off - seems to connect somehow anyway.
Now two questions:
1: How can it connect to the internet without the right sim card being in there? The phone is pre-configured to Vodafone UK settings so how can it use contract internet on o2 Germany?
2: There is no way I can be charged for anything in the UK if I havent been using my sim card right? This may seem like a silly question but I dont know I m just worried now that there is some crazy way through which o2 can log in using my vodafone settings and that I m being charged at both ends for the connection (nightmare).
reason I m worried about the latter is that when I click on the connection symbol (the H) at the top of mym screen it says: connected contract internet and it shows u the time it has been connected for - then I have to disable this manually by clicking on cancel - however, I havent had credit on my phone for 2 days now (since I made this post) so how can it be connected to anything? I m really confused
What do u think?

Install no data! clearly it has connected to the German O2 Data Connection! It must have auto configured it or something - install no data and see if that helps
