I was on the phone to o2 UK for 15mins today trying to enable MMS on my handset. Is is not possible! o2 will not allow the use of GPRS and MMS together. You can enable MMS but must disable GPRS. I asked if they had any plans to enable the use of both. The woman on the other end said no!!
My Serial Cable is on order. My contract runs out in August. Change of providers me thinks. Maybe orange and the Sony p800, just for fun...
[I also use my sim chip in a Siemens S55, hence the MMS request]
What experience if any have other people had trying to enable MMS please lets see what I am doing wrong...

I've had exactly the same problem here. Being rather annoyed by this state of affairs, I spent a good three hours repeatedly calling both O2 and Carphone Warehouse to try and get a decent response as to why this was not possible.
The responses fell into two camps:
1) Technical problems - "GPRS takes all the available slots so MMS can't push messages through". This smells like BS to me, even though I got this answer from fairly clued up tech support people on the data team. After all, it's virtually impossible to keep a permanent GPRS connection going at present, so if I'm not using GPRS, why ever should I not be able receive MMS?
2) Simple administration problems on the billing system - it's currently impossible for the O2 accounts to have both a GPRS data plan and MMS activated purely due to red tape in the billing system. This seems more likely to me. Expecially as one can get MMS activated, but have to 'downgrade' GPRS to a pay as you use service at £5/MB. That's an active GPRS and MMS service by my reckoning - it's got to be red-tape.
I was told 'unofficially' that they were looking into this and had a very loose date of end of May for this silly situation to be rectified. However, we all know how loose O2's deadlines are - EUU3 was released in March, with no file in the installation dated after November.
I even got a semi-official email (quoted below), but this, IMHO, is plain confused as the proposed solution quotes a Rom update. If unavailability is due to "necessary changes taking place on our network systems" then why would it require a client side ROM update? Basically, I beleive this just refers to the availability of EzWap 2.5 from O2.
Re. your query on MMS usage on the Xda.
After mailing the relevant people concerned, I have the following information..
MMS will not work with the Xda at this moment in time due to necessary changes taking place on our network systems (no timescales to hand).
(This would possibly account for your Service Provider being unable to provision MMS for you at this time).
O2 are also driving to have MMS available for the Xda in the next few months - possibly as part of the next ROM after 3.16.32 (currently in testing).
I hope this helps..

I changed my data plan from 13.99 for 3mb, to £2.25 (maybe £2.95 I forget because of my frustration!) per 1MB, PAYG. This is one hell of a saving for me. So if I try again, I should be able to get MMS enabled. Confused!
I asked specifically:
"I cannot use GPRS and MMS on the same phone"
02 "no, you will have to disable gprs".
At the price I have been quoted for PAYG 5MB is less than £15. So I'm on a better deal?
Is there any official, or accurate information on this please.
Martin
Guys,
I have just spoken to O2, and there is another system that they use that will allow GPRS & MMS to co-exist on the same tariff. It's called the "die" system, and involves you "porting" your number to a different customer base within O2.
Sound daft to me - but heres the catch. You have to be out of contract, i.e. over the 12 months initial period. In my case it is this Sept. So I will be chasing them then.
Ho Hum.

The issue is one of service providers.
O2 stores are OK - generally you can just about get what you're after.
But, if you bought your kit from dixons or Carphone, they don't have to offer MMS and GPRS, even if O2 support it! stupid, huh? guess it will cost money offering services people want.
Now, if O2 direct can't do it then that's pretty ****.
I have an O2 SIM from an O2 shop, which has MobileWeb and MMS enabled (bought with a 7650). Slips easily into an xda...
But, MMS on xda is prety poor... :?
mms
i got mine from o2 and they have said that i cant have mms and gprs as the xda cant deal with the both ????????????? :?:
> the xda cant deal with the both
Of course it can. This seems to be just a techno-BS-excuse to try and put off potential users. OK so the XDA probably can't receive a WAP push message for an MMS when GPRS is in use, but then, it can't maintain a permanent GPRS connection anyway.
IMHO the reason they don't allow both tarrifs is purely administrative.

sounds like excuses i am currently on rom 3.16 and i have had my xda for a few weeks. o2 arent very helpfull and they shouldnt be selling this product if they cant provide the support for it 8)
mms
you cant use mms on the xda its not possible to get the correct Ezwap 2.5 connection and mms settings for this program to work in the UK. If any one can help then email: [email protected]. cheers

Not excuses at all. The XDA does not support MMS features 'out of the box' and without using no UK Acredited software (acredited in Asia & Australisia). If O2 don't wish to support a 'feature' that was not advertised as being part of the package, then that is down to them. They never said it would work in the first place.
If you download the o2 gprs settings direct from their site its free!
They are currently running a free use with fair use policy of course.
I'm using a t610 with this no problems.
Good hunting...
I work for the Aberdeen O2 store and we have came acros this problem with a few of the billing agents.
CCL and Cell ops I believe to be the worst at this. There is no plans for them upgrading there system and you should leave them if you want the XDA2 or any other phone to run the gprs and mms at the same time.
The O2 stores now use a new billing company the same one for o2 online connections and I got my XDA2 through them and it works mms and gprs fine.
There are loads of billing compaines within o2 carphone warehouse and singlepoint seem to be the worst.
Also please note that o2 direct is normally your billing agent and there really **** when it comes to knowledge on the XDA's.
Us boys in the Aberdeen store know our stuff so if your stuck just pop in past it's probly a fair bit away from everone but its a nice drive up here
Richard
I had the same explaination from O2 after some 6.5 hours on the phone over the course of a week.
I'm a pay monthly customer - they told me the tarrif was incompatible.
After some complaining, one of the guys in the data services dept turned MMS on, and sent an email to the billing dept.
two days later I had a text message saying it was all up and runing.
I have tried it, and it works. I have MMS & GPRS
now if only I could get this bloody SanDisk SD Wifi card to work !!!
Every time I connect to MOBILE WEB GPRS or WAP NETWORK GPRS, I get the following error:
"Cannot connect for an unkown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again."
With a "Settings" link and a Dismiss button below that, in a bubble pointing from the Network/Coverage bars logo on the taskbar.
Please? Anyone?

Hi,
Just need some clarification here - have you ever been able to access GPRS on this or any other mobile device?
I say this because I had exactly the same problem when I purchased my XdaII. Despite several (lengthy) calls to 02 Customer Services, each one accompanied by a request to activate GPRS (and an assurance that it would work within 24 hours), nothing happened.
It turned out that I was on an old, non-GPRS-enabled (but cheap!) tariff. Once the tariff was changed, everything worked fine (but after 5 days, not 24 hours - the XdaII just suddenly burst into life and I could suddenly email and everything!).
I got a refund for my calls to Customer Services, too...
Cheers
Gadget
Well mate, I've been using it on this tariff before.
I'll explain:
I was happily emailing etcetera, then an unfortunate incident occured where my screen cracked, so I sent it off to the service centre.
£150 later... I had a new screen AND a hard-reset
New SIM too... because I lost the old one in the mean time (XDA Service centre are seriously [email protected], it takes them 3 weeks not the quoted 3 days).
So New Sim and practically new phone... I had no GPRS
Bollocks bollocks bollocks.

I get this sometimes when I swap sims. Needs a hard reset or re-run the O2 active setup thingy
All of a sudden, my GPRS wont connect now. I get the message "the answering modem has disconnected".
I haven't changed any settings, so wondering if anyone else is having the same trouble? Maybe it's a network thing. If not, could someone post their settings please so I can check them. (for O2 UK)
Cheers

At least ONE of you must be on O2? Since the phone is EXCLUSIVE to O2
I've recently had a similar problem myself and today have used the settings here which seem to work

I got it working. I changed it to Class 10 instead of Class 8, which did the job. Dunno why it stopped working in the first place though.
I've got another problem now. MMS doesn't work. It won't let me send, and when I receive I get a web link rather than the actual message. What am I doing wrong? A couple of years ago I heard there was a problem with O2 Online contracts which meant you could only use either GRPS internet OR MMS, but not both. Is this what I'm encountering?
I think that normally happens when you can't recv mms messages because gprs and mms aren't available on an account at the same time. The new MobileWeb service does support both - but you have to ring to activate it.

I don't think that phone can work on 3 network. I think it is of an complete different 'frequency'. Can you make/receive phone calls using the 3 sim?
yes, calls work etc not tried a video call as yet but i know lots of fones dont work at all with the 3 sim but the exec does
Same here

You can input all the settings, but I can't seem to be able to access the 3 portal.
In settings, connections tab, connections
advanced tab, select networks
new, and input the relevant info from here:
Data accounts: Create one called 3 GPRS.
APN: three.co.uk
Username:
Password:
Login request: Off
Allow calls: Automatic
IP address:
DNS address:
Authentication: Normal
Data compression: Off
Header compression: Off
MMS settings can be entered via outlook menu
gateway: http://mms.um.three.co.uk:10021/mmsc
proxy: 217.171.192.2
port: 8799
(account is the 3UK avvount above)
Not sure if u need to input the Video gateway.
If anyone know how to actually open the portal, plz help,
I think the problem is that the page detects what device you are using, and an exec is not on their list.
My A1000 uses Opera so it cant be that much different...
Thanx Aristotle
3GRPS seems to work ok, considering that on EXEC it will not display any service pages still but does connect to 3.
Though the MMS settings are not working. I am not able to download my MMS messages and send either any suggestions.
Thankyou in advance
In Australia, so for we have got the Universal to connect to planet3, 3G for internet access, and video calling. We still have not managed to get it working for mms, and video streaming.

Oh that's good, is there anything special you need to do to access planet 3? because I can connect, but can't load any pages.
I guess the video streaming is to do with the hutchkey plugin(???)
Aristotle, you're in the UK, and it's all firewalled on 3, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. I know things are different in Australia (from the 3g forum).
That's why I left for t-mob: the irony is that the network that claims to be the most hi-tech is in fact the most low-tech of them all. On t-mob web and walk pro and the exec, you get full internet access (no restrictions), with infinite bandwith. That means during the day I remote-desktop to my home machine over 3G, then when I go home it switches calls to skype (I turn gprs off and wifi on), never worrrying about the bills. Try doing that on 3. :-/
lol.....well in australia we only really have one option for 3G at this stage, and thats 3.
walk into an optus store here asking about 3G, and if your lucky they know what your talking about, and at best they might be able to tell you that the broachers are coming.
Vodafone here, well not bad, but ask them anything outside what there trained to know and you might as well be talking egyptian.
telstra....lol....almost as bad as optus.....
Give us another 3 yrs....

Yeah, I know, thanks =/ it would be nice to see the F1 news and footie scores whilst on the train...
Used to be on T-mobile but it's reception was (and still is) awful where I live, drops more calls than 3.
Yep, wouldnt it be great to have a program that would have all the F1 details for the season and also sync options to get all the latest news, minute by minute race and qualifing updates....mmm....sounds very viable

no offence, but...
universal is a 3g compatible phone - it will work with 3, vodafone 3, Australia 3, etc - it is designed to do that.
secondly - use the http://mobile.three.co.uk/hb/7600/HutchKey as access to the portal - just make it your homepage. this one is for nokia, it works with me.
re sms - check the sms centre!!! thats all you have to do - call the support and they will give you the number.
confused
sorry to seem really thick ( I probably am), but where is the setting to change sms centre number on the unversal. Ive been through all settings and cant find it. I dont remember changing this on my A1000 when I flashed it with the non 3 Uk F/W
I've been told about this 3 network not compatible with any other phones except the phones that cames together with the package. I wonder why is it so? I mean, others are trying to lock the phone, so that it can't be used with other network. But locking the network to a certain phone doesn't make any business sense.
However, I've recently had a look on my friend's 3 network phone. And it seems that the phone main screen is flashing advertisements constantly. And, as far as I know, this 3 network is the cheapest to maintain so far, that's why many seems to be using it.
So, my current conclusion is that, they need a phone that has the ability for them to flash advertisements, if not, they won't let you have the cheap network rate without the ability for them to flash advert.

Hi igs, I can access some pages on planet 3, but not others, if I try for example the link you give for nokias, I get an error message (see below, sorry for the small image, can't find the right screenshot programme)
However, I can access some pages, e.g. checking my balance (see below), by typing the link. and if I click on the links from there, I can open some pages but not others.
These are my settings
I have APN: three.co.uk
Username password and domain are blank
Use server assigned IP address in TCP/IP and Servers
And nothing checked for proxy settings
Any ideas? Could it be that you have some plugin that I don't? Thanks....
Also ai118, I didnt need to specify a sms centre, it did it automatically...

I think that might be a 6280, you can turn those 'adverts' off
Folks, please forgive the intrusion of a non-developer, but I come cap in hand for some wise and informed advice -
I want Internet access to browse to my firm's MS Exchange server for browser-based e-mail.
Took delivery by courier of a VF 1605 on Monday, swapped SIM over from old Nokia 6230i and turned it on: no Internet browsing to any site. Eventually, after many calls to customer support got the setup instructions: settings, connections, ISP/add new modem connection, contract Internet, cellular line GPRS,3G, Intranet, Web, Web, Finish.
Still no connection - just an error message: Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.... (you get the picture.) And so we go off round the houses again.
VF customer support first thinks it's a SIM problem (old one not compatible with new phone) so delivers a new one. Phone fails to work just the same. I try the new SIM in another new 1605 at a VF shop. Same result - no connection to any Web site. I then download vodafone_settings.cab from here and install it on my phone. Still no change. Same result - Cannot Connect. VF now think the phone is faulty and will swap it when they have stock. But I am not so sure.
Can two 1605s be faulty in the same way or does this smack of general muppetry by me?
With thanks for your patience!
KevinF.
Hi replace intranet with internet.
Many, many thanks
Bri.s -
I have done so and the 1605 now connects. I am so grateful. Many thanks.
