Hello,
Well everything said in the subject,
I would like to be able to surf internet in GPRS when I am making a phone call, I tried this but It it not working on my QTEK 9090 (PDA2K ....)
I know with the blackberry it is possible.
Is there any crack to allow this?
Thanks
Michael
GPRS is always turned off when gsm or sms is active it turn back on afterwards it's just how the std is
this is why i want to change the standard to leave it on
I believe he is saying it is the way the technology works. You can not be online via GPRS and be using the voice portion of the GSM service at the same time.
yes and no
following the specs of GPRS it is possible depends on the Class of gprs used
take a look at this link

You are correct in what you say, but it actually depends on the class of Device that you use. The RIM blackberry devices are able to keep GPRS on whilst also using the voice connection. The XDA range of devices can't do this I'm afraid.
Very good to know. Do the T-mobile Sidekicks support this class?
Sorry if you all already know this, but orange payg are offering unlimited gprs for only £1 per day, i've been using it for about 2 weeks and it's pretty good, it's a full data connection too so you can get emails or sync over the air etc. In my opinion the best part is that you can pick and choose when you want it.
yeah i'm on it too. The Orange Unlimited GPRS extra for £1 thing right?
People signing upwith Orange to get this extra,REMEMBER, the gprs extra runs out at midnight, regardless of what time you apply it!
Applying it at 23:00 is just plain stupid cos you'll have to re-apply the extra at 00:00 anyway.
I've got a contact stored on my XDA that is assigned to a speed dial key. When pressed, it automatically re-applies the extra.
To do the same, create a new contact & give it this phone number: 450p#p3p1p4p1p1
The call to 453 should take about 45 secs, after that your extra should be applied
THE GPRS DOES NOT INCLUDE DOWNLOADING OVER P2P PORTS!!! almost everything else works fine (ftp, http, https, msn messenger, e-mail-etc) but using p2p costs you money, regardless of whether the extra is applied or not.
anyone know of a PPC app that dials a contact at a scheduled time and disconnect after X seconds? would be real useful for this
does that mean i cud use skype on it?

No, gprs is to slow for skype. My T-mobile gprs is about 40-50kbits/s. (flat-fee for 9,50 euro's a month )
sorry but what why can i use?
im looking into all thsi mobile net stuff but need to find the facts before i lay out money
if i try to get info in store they just try and sell,me stuff i dont need
Well its about the same speed as dial up, so you can surf the net (albeit slowly) and you can use MSN and collect email. its useful but its no replacement for wifi or 3G. I use it when I'm at work (i do a lot of waiting around)
Are you sure you are right ???? GPRS
Ive just picked up an orange sim and yes the £1.00 per day unlimited offer still stands but its for orange world , not other services . I thought from the original thread that this would give me GPRS access to the web ?
Can you confirm what service you have been getting with it ?
Im looking for a basic internet connection I dont mind slow but I do mind £2.35 and upwards per Meg .!!!
Any thoughts
Astro1
I can confirm (with 390 megs of GPRS used under my belt) that it works with any http address.
Haha, if the service worked with P2P, orange'd have been raped for bandwidth by now.
Hi all,
I've been having problems connecting to the internet now for a few weeks. Only one in 10 connections at best. 'Locating', 'Page Not Found' errors, no email.
I've read some of the posts on here about HSPDA, so I called T-Mobile to enable it, but they said that my price plan would have to increase. I think I'm on one of the lowest, but I didn't know there was extra costs for 'Walk 'n' Web'.
We went through some changes, but it didn't make my difference to my connections.
Has anyone any advice about either connections, or the HSPDA price plan issue? Are you paying the 'normal' price plan but are able to connect to HSPDA?
Thanks guys,
Ratzz
Ratzz,
Your not alone here, i have recently moved to T-Mobile and for the first week all was fine, both gprs and HSDPA were working fine, the later being very quick indeed for a mobile device.
This week has been a different story all together, since saturday morning my internet access has been very patchy, the same 'Locating', 'Page Not Found' errors that you are seeing. I can't offer any explanation, just sympathy and would love to get to the bottom of it myself.
Here's hoping.

For the past 3 weeks I have been using my Vario II as a usb modem and had no problems at all HSDPA working great as for price plan I have the basic web n walk, it is pot luck who you speak to at CS but keep calling and you will get HSDPA enabled once spoke to the right person, ask to be put through to technical.
is HSDPA the same as 3g or different? i'm on vodafone, will i need to get them to "turn hsdpa on" or is it on by default?
Check out the hermes forum over at www.modaco.com there is some indication this this is caused by a the T-Mobile DNS and T-Mobile transparent proxy servers being able to cope with the demand.
I had the same problem and have pretty much eliminated the delays by changing the DNS servers from being server assigned to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as many on modaco have done.

Tried that Simon ... same problems.
There is a link below which I found on a thread that worked ok for someone -- but again this didn't work for me.
http://www.manuals.t-mobile.co.uk/maillink.asp?a=3&wm=1a1677a401690a128256
ok, i seem to have found a combination that works for me at least.
I followed the steps on the MoDaCo thread above but used the following addresses.
DNS : 158.43.240.4
Alt DNS : 62.241.160.200
In the proxy settings, tick both "This network connects to the Internet" & This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet" and then click advanced. Tap the HTTP (type) and enter 149.254.201.132 port 8080 and click ok. This works great for me both on gsm (gprs) & HSDPA (UMTS).
Hope this works for you guys too.
Regards.

Hi
I use my Vario II on the train with a laptop over bluetooth everyday between stirling and edinburgh. The coverage is mostly 3G (Linlithgow being the exception), and I get one black-spot just south of linlithgow.
The situation with the original t-mob rom was dire. I am now using the test AKU3.3 rom with radio 1.27 and its much better. Bluetooth PAN seems more reliable than the old dial-up networking.
On my laptop, I have changed the DNS settings for the PAN to non t-mob ones. I was having the same issues everyone else reports with failed resolutions.
Some days it works superbly, some days, its sh1te. This is imho, simply issues at t-mobile. I travel at the same times on each day, so I dont see that the proxy can be loaded more so one day than the next.
I also find that with HSDPA switched off, things are far more reliable than with it on. Having said that, some days I get a good HSDPA connection all the way.
What I could do with is a cacheing DNS server running locally on the laptop that will override the TTL (time to live) for the domains that it caches. I would have installed bind, but its a beast (I use it at home)... Anyone know of a mini DNS server that would suit my needs? Currently I have the sites that I use regularly shoved in a hosts file!
Nigel
I'm having exactly the same problem, had put it down to a problem with my radio ROM, but from reading this thread it looks like a t-mobile problem, so hopefully it will sort itself in due course. In the mean time I'll have a look at changing those settings................cheers.

Hi
I use USB instead of bluetooth where convenient from a laptop. Would you care to do a test @ http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html from your laptop while on HSDPA via USB ???
I get about 550K down and 330K up which although pretty good is way off the headline figures! Wondered if my tests were about the same as yours?

HSDPA
Hi all,
Following on from my original message, I called T-Mobile today and insisted they enable HSDPA on my line for the ongoing internet problems.
They did it (I'm on the BASIC W&W), and within 10 minutes all my problems were solved.
Ratzz
Excellent news - Let's just hope it stays that way. If not give the DNS server settings a try.
BTW what sort of download speeds are you getting? I use http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 and I tend to get a pretty constant 650kbps down and 350kbps up.
I have heard people getting in 750kbps upto over 1Mbps but not something I've ever managed and definately have HSPDA enabled on the phone and network.
enabling hsdpa seems to have fixed all my problems too.
Have seen speed upto 800 kbps so far.
T-Mobile UK Data
Anyone else got anything other than the following showing on their 'my t-mobile' page? You'll find it under 'Mobile Phone Summary-->View Or Modify Features Of Your Plan' :-
WAP Call On
VoiceMail On
SMS Text Messaging On
Call Waiting On
Call Hold On
Call Forward to VoiceMail On
GPRS On
Web & Wap 384k Up/2048 Down On Appearently this is the HSDPA setting
International & Premium Calls On
Voice & Data Roaming On
Picture Messaging On
3G (UMTS) Service On
Mobile email Off
Additionally in another section 'Mobile Phone Summary-->Additional Allowances And Services' I have the following:-
18 Month Upgrade Flag £0.00
Capped Data Rate £0.00
Remove Content Lock £0.00
Video Calling £0.00
£5 Go Direct Discount £0.00
I am wondering what the 'Capped Data Rate' is ?? Its available as a 'service' that can be added as well, but there is no way to remove it. Anyone else got the same showing on their 'my t-mobile' page ??
Nigel
If I remember correctly I have the option to add Capped Data Rate at no extra cost but it isn't applied to my account. I haven't applied it as I don't like the sound of somthing that is "Capped" - I'd love to find out what it is.
What WnW package are you on? I have the WnW Plus (so that I can legitimately use my VarioII as a modem for my laptop and not fear huge bills).
Hi
I am also on web and walk plus
Nigel
'Capped Data Rate'
is for if you dont have web n walk, it means your data carges are capped at £1 a day (midnight til midnight)
Hello,
I have just got myself a universal, but I don't want to run up a huge bill with GPRS connecting to the web and other bits, so how do I disable it.
I only want to connect via Wi-fi and nothing else..... If there is no Wi-fi available I want to be able to then activate GPRS.
Do you sort of know where I am coming from.
Is there a way to tell on the front screen to check if its using GPRS or Wi-fi as wel?
BTW I am new to PDA's so please help me as much as you can.
Many thanks.
When I make a call is it gsm or gprs?
Is there a larger cost to GPRS calls? Is GPRS data?
If so, can I sort of disble it from connecting via this method.
I only want to make calls via gsm, and if I need tinternet I will use the wifi..
Please help... I dont want to get a huge bill when it comes in from work.,.,.,
*** I posted this because I realised I made a mistake in the 1st post, by getting GSM and GPS totally mixed up....***

quickest way to deactivate GPRS is just to delete it's profile under connection settings. should be easy enough to see but in some cases it may cause a problem when it comes to MMS as MMS is part GPRS even though they don't charge you per Mb like they do for browsing.
enjoy
ive been reading and it sounds like this is somehow doable. i've been trying to figure it out for YEARS, but to no luck. ive got htc hermes, blueangel, wallaby, motorazr, you name the phone i can get it.
how can i set this up. ive tried to dialup network over bluetooth and dial the phonenumber of hte isp, but i get PHONE IS BUSY.
help me guys, please=
i cant add data to my plan, this is my only shot at internet on my phone.
You and I just keep runnin into each other....
Who is your carrier and/or why can't you add data?
I had, at one point been q class w/tmobile, and wasn't allowed to add any data plan(s) so I had to connect to some internet provider over gsm cellular connection. this is, to the best of my knowledge, how I did it.
Go to settings, connections, connections, manage connectins, and add new.
Name it and select "cellular line" (not gprs).
Next, input the phone number your dial up provider uses (i'm not sure about 1's or +1's or whatever)
Next enter your username and password for your provider (most dial up's don't use a domain, so leave that blank).
Next, finish, and select it under "manage connections" so it is the default (this will screw up your messaging) and test it out. You may want to use autopick or leave the existing default connection as the default connection, and just click the g icon, and select another connection to connect to the net at that particular time, to maintain your ability to text.
You can expect a slow, fax machine like connection.
I have tmo now, and an sx66 (no 3g or edge) so I got the web2go for 9.99 (for normal phones) and set my access point to internet2.voicestream.com, with no proxy, or username/pass, and I get about dial up -ish speeds. I do have an issue with mms, and am working that out now.
irlol. we're the only two people in the BA forum nowdays, id say we're going to get to know each other realgood. its slightly funny that ive been searching for these instructions for 4years and you're the ONLY person ive found whos done it, so thank you verymuch.
as for carrier, im on att blue. original ATT before cingular bought it and then before cingular changed its name to att. im completely grandfathered in, they refuse to let me modify any of my addons. so i get charged up the ass for data.
alright i set it up. adding the + to the number made it dial longer, buit it sttill screams THERE IS NO MODEM AT THIUS NUMBER.
when i know damnwellt here is. this sux. -_-
i use same method with carrier Claro Dom, with my excalibur. on hermes and any umts phone u must disable it umts/3g first. i have used it with wizard perfectly.btw at&t had this service, using a home dialup account. if the number dialed is free of charge then u get free internet we call Dial-slow, as said already at fax speed which i havent seen over 9600 kbps.
i tried it on the blueangel as well, it didnt work. and its a standard gprs/gsm phone. no edge or 3g.
why can you all get it working and i can, what hte hell am i missing lmfao
ive been trying to get this to work for years i currently just got a Sprint Touch Pro 2 and i am going to Asia for a month. While their im goign to use the GSM portion of my phone.. etc and i would like to still get emails and use the itnernet..
i know the speeds will be ubeeer slow.. but if i put in as said earlier in this forum something from a dial up ISP, i should only get charged VOICe minutes and not data KB?
that would be AWESOME!!!!
