Still looks like fake... I think it will look more like Samsung, flat, sharp, SMALL...

Unfortunately, having had the xda for a few months I've come to this conclusion.... you cant have small with this kind of device!
Normal hand held use
I got cramp in my hand using the Sony Erricsson for 20 minutes. This was mainly due to its smaller size, otherwise its a good device. Again I wouldnt want to write a story on it for 2 hours like I did waiting in a car-park the other day on the xda
GPS Navigation
Consequently the xda screen-size is also perfect for GPS use in the car, again, with a smaller screen I wouldnt like using it in that application either.
The only possible way it could be improved size wise is with two screens, in a fold out flip-phone configuration, with the same overall screen size as now, but it would be a pain for GPS.
Basically, If you want a tiny phone, this isnt for you. If you want a device that is highly versatile, ergonomic which just happens to also be a phone, (e.g. as a secondary function) a pocket pc xda / xda2 is excellent.

Groan,.... when are mobile manufacturers going to realise that the xda's user demographic already own decent digital cameras.
The effect of this will be you never use it, unless you're out minus digital camera and see a ufo.
lets face it a ufo would have to be pretty close at 640x480 to make it worth taking a picture of!
Wouldnt it be better to not bother with a built in camera until streaming video calls become affordable/technically available.

It doesn't like a phone anymore......
I'm afraid the signal will not be as good as the old XDA..

xda 2
hi
isnt it a shame they havent fitted a decent camera. especially with the 65000 colours. and why havent the put blue tooth as standard.

The camera's a reason for me NOT TO BUY an XDAII: In the industry I'm in, camera phones are banned for reasons of espionage. Manufacturers should keep in mind that this applies to many other businesses as well. The time will come when we have to go back to old fashioned wired phones on our desks because no wireless device will be available without a camera.
... it would really hurt to buy a new device and immediately treat the camera with a nail and hammer!
Martin

That's really stupid. If you can't be trusted to begin with, you could very well sneak in a mini digital camera anyway. Idiots.

Screen Brightness/ Clarity

The XDA screen struggled in daylight, I hope that this is improved. The brightness on some iPaq's is meant to be 'blinding', any news on the XDA II...
Good to see the now normal 64k colour screen. This shall go a long way in clearing up things. Using downloaded themes from the internet was touch and go. I ended up using a Monsters Inc cartoon theme as anything with people in it was just laughable!
I have sold my XDA, after nearly 14 months I have moved on. I am now using a S-E T610. This is a mobile phone, something that the XDA struggled with in my opinion. I look forward to see what happens in the new year... This will determine whether I buy an iPaq 2210 (£300 on http://www.ebuyer.com) or the XDA II tba £500+ . . .

I got a MDA II for testing (only a few days )
I have a MDA and what could i say
The difference is like night an day!!
The Display is bright clear and "sharper"
The thing i didn´t managed is to get in bootloader Mode :x
The MDA way is doing a cold reset on a MDA II
Are there Infos around to get in Wallaby Mode.
In that case there is a chance that i could share
the ROM Image for the public

LMFAO ROFL
t610 have the worst screen clearity out lol you cant see them in sunlight one bit and your complaining about the xda lol
sorry just made me laugh my xda seems fine much clearer then the 3650
re
I gotta agree with gazzaman2k.
I work part time in a UK phone shop and we have had more T610s returned than any other current phone. Not for technical reasons but because of complaints that they simply can't see the screen in sunlight.
A shame because apart from that the T610 is a fantastic phone.
Cheers, Shire
All Color LCD (back light style, all PDA and phones) is not easy to read under sunshine!
the old non-color phone is very clear under sunshine!
Walking down street today tring to ring somebody on my T610. I went and hid in the shadows of a nearby door way trying to see the daft thing.
Maybe in the future something can be done? My old Siemens c35i is sat in the draw maybe I should get that back out for use in the summer!!
From what I have seen of Palm screens in daylight, they should all be returned. I have an ipaq and xda and also an Axim x5, I like the xda screen, only problem is we cant do much about the backlight intensity except off/on, can this be hacked or is it hardware limited?
there was a link somewhere on this site that took you to an ipaq hack site. I followed the reg hack, and was presented with the brightness tab. I adjusted this to see what would happen. Nothing, the settings had no effect. Except at either extreem where it was either off or on.
So it must be a hardware limitation, as a software hack did not help.
My XDA II broke, and I bough MDA II.
The maximum screen brightness on the MDA II is much lower than on the XDA II.
I've opened them both up.
They are diferent from the inside!
Images os the two devices attached, MDA on the left, XDA on the right.
Their screens are different!
Even some memory chips seem to be different!
It's impossible to swich their screens or motherboards.
It seems that MDA II is an older version of the XDA, with an older, much darker screen.

would a different camera software improve it?
thanks
Yep the wizards camera is'nt up to much
- there are some camera tweaks here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45123
and someone on the forum is looking to develop some camera software. The camera software that you can use with the magician certainly helps that device. It's a shame the prophet's 2mp camera and the upcoming hermes is much better so it gives us something to look forward too.

what do you mean but 'gives us something to look forward too'. we have to buy a new device to get image quality of a standard cellphone. HTC should be ashamed of themselves the razr a $100 phone has a better camera than out 350-450$ device. I had the jasjar a $850 HTC pda and the camera was crap on that too.
As annoying as it is... if you bought the a cell phone (of any calibre) with "must have good camera" as one prerequisites, then a quick check at a store with a demo model would have easily shown that the HTC Wizard's Camera (and pretty much all of HTC's models cameras) are pisspoor.
And yes, they certainly could and -should- get better cameras. The one in the Hermes may be better, but it's still a far cry from a decent camera... this just boils down to HTC either manufacturing these themselves (don't think so), or getting cheap modules. They really should get a contract with a company who knows their stuff when it comes to small form factor camera modules... if that means they have to charge $50 / device more.. so be it.
With my Cingular 8125, which I've had a week, I could get better pictures with a Quaker Oatmeal box with a pin-hole in it, a piece of white paper and a pencil. In daylight, I have a total 'whiteout'. I'm not adequately technically minded so am reluctant to know which fixes to use, and how to apply them/it. So far, I haven't seen problems like mine here. Only fixes for difficulties in low-light . I've already tried tweaking the processes available through icons in the camera screen, but haven't been able to find settings for things like 'contrast', 'gamma', and 'white-saturation' etc.

Hi - in camera goto - settings icon\tools\adjust and you can adjust contrast etc.. there.
Thanks!
If I set the 'brightness' left, about 3/4 from middle, the outdoor pics .......I can even see clouds! I completely missed the 'tools' menu in the camera-settings' click-through in the view screen. If a fix doesn't rectify this problem, changing settings for different light conditions could be a chore. I imagine increasing the brightness setting for indoor/evening would achieve opposite results, but I'm recharging my unit now.

Finally Saw a Cingular 8500

I've had my 8525 for about 2 months now, and in all the literature you see it mentions an 8500, but all this time I thought it was just a pre-production prototype, or just a way of refering to the Hermes based phone series. Well, I had my phone out yesterday at a meet and greet and a guy goes "I've got that same phone but without the camera". One thing led to another, and I shot some pictures of it.
Maybe you guys have seen them before, maybe not... maybe ya just don't care. Whatever, I thought it was interesting how they blacked out the camera and flash, while still keeping the camera button.

Forgive me for asking, but is that phone supposed to be for folk who work in companies that have a rule against cameras. Otherwise it seems very shoddy to still have the button and camera frame etc but no camera! Surely a back could have been designed not to look completely daft with those camera bits and the button, it could have been rebadged to some other function.
Mike
The guy who had it was a contractor for the government, and certain areas he is in, they don't allow cameras of any kind. Until he got this phone, as you know, the only phones he could find were really crappy phones.
And, I agree they could've... but with the low production, and low demand for it, why bother? That is way better than the last non-camera phone he had.
I guess your right
Mike
Believe it or not, the 8500 was released by cingular's B2B sales department about a month and a half before the 8525. I was in the Cingular corporate store here in austin (a friend works there) and I got to check one out. And yes you guys are right, its made for people who work in places where camera's aren't allowed, BUT since it still has the casing for the camera, many government offices still don't allow it!!! hahah, nice try cingular.
Also there was a report on one of the PPC blogs that if you open the device up, all you have to do is add a camera from a 8525 and your good to go, no other hardware mod's needed. Other than a back cover with a lens on it.
If the made the battery cover completely flat without the camera cover, it would have been more successful, but I guess they overlooked that.

Is there any source for that? (other than finding someone ditching a dead 8525?)
Mike
Hey! I have the cingy 8500. Everything is the same as the 8525, just no camera. The camera button takes me straight to my pictures folder. fone_fanatic is correct. The phone *looks* like it still has a camera unless inspected a little closer. The bad thing, it still can't go where camera phones are not allowed (though, usually these places dont allow ANY phones anyway), the good thing, the phone CAN use extended life batteries. Seems all the extended life battery companies only make the back cover WITH the holes in it for the camera. If we didn't have the blank off stuff, we'd be out of luck in regards to extended batteries....
ps this is my first post... be gentle.
Alright, another Austinite!

As I could tell, the only thing that is a step back from the Uni is:
Smaller screen
No GPS (although there's an inline headphone GPS version, from what I can tell, without replaceable headset)
Memory Stick =/
However, it does have features that set it apart from the Uni:
800x480 VGA screen. Widescreen, not 4x3 like the Uni's 640x480 display.
Slider (not clamshell). This depends on your preference, but for me I like to see who's calling without having to open the phone up
Optical joystick - this is really awesome. You just slide your finger on it and it guides and onscreen pointer. I've gotta see this.
Headsets have an inline media control accessory. I haven't really found one that works with the Uni.
Camera is 3.2 mp.
Bluetooth 2.0/ADCP by default. Assuming this won't be buggy.
Wifi G - nuff said.
Assuming better battery life.
Smaller. I guess this could be a benefit depending on your opinion on the size of the Uni.
No wonder Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 is so good: HTC makes it
please be advised there is some posts about sonyericsson x1 on off topic thread and ,.....
and i think you should to know: this device will be MANUFACTURED by HTC
the X1 is all HTC-built
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/no-wonder-sony-ericssons-xperia-x1-is-so-good-htc-makes-it/
it seems there is no further than HTC
It also has a-GPS
I think it looks the dogs danglies, I don't care who makes it. Just look at that screen (dribble dribble)
That damned Sony Memory Stick is the only thing holding it back (I so hate Sony's proprietary garbage). But if it lives up to its promises...I guess that'll be forgiveable!
Hi,
we heard it through the grapevine that the X1 is all HTC-built....
This is what engadget wrote . But i also think it is true. All these htc devices all around....
I think HTC is some kind of reference for the mobile market.
Although some things very crappy in the past
So from my point of view the X1 is really nice device. I noticed it a few days before and of course there's GPS inside.
Although the sliding mechanism looks very comfortable.
The Uni is very universal but in fact it is too big, to use it as a real phone or take it everywhere anytime. At least this is what i do at the moment
The Kaiser is also a good mixture for an everyday device
Maybe the X1 will do it even a bit more better.
But first let's rip off the memory stick interface and integrate SD cards....
scholbert
Sony does make some damn fine electronics, but their customer support is lousy. But the phone looks good, memory sticks suck and the last I checked don't have anything over 4GIGS the touch interface looks neat, and if the keyboard is anything like my old UX then it will be a great keyboard my only concern will be Sony's support of the product.
So basically it is the same thing as the Toshiba except for the video call is that correct?
GSM arena has it with a micro SD slot so it will be interexting to see what it actually has when its released. I like the security of the Clamshell design of the Uni but i might be drawn away by the X1 if its all that it states....
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x1-2246.php
If Sony is reading this I hope to god they:
Use STANDARD SD size so we can store large amounts of data, to be comperable to iPhone
Include GPS so we can use tracking apps that are becoming commonplace
Both pdadb.net confirms the microSD and Sony's own site confirms the GPS

hopefully in the next day or 2 they will upload the guy running through the software so we can see what software they included and how much they have improved it from the announcement model (if they have sorted the lag and changed or improved anything).

Sigh... after watching the video, somehow just adds to the feeling that it really ain't much of a big improvement over the X1. But well, will still get it. And hopefully, it'll be out before the 1 year warranty of my X1 expires so that I can send it for servicing. Gotta get my keyboard issue resolved, now that I realized it ain't to do with me using a custom ROM.
If you want it to feel like a "big thing" just simply think of it as a standalone phone from the Xperia series, not as a successor to the X1.
After you establish that fact, it's just a new phone in the lineup.
I hope they won't put those pathetic earphones in the final set.
I would like to LAUGH one more time about their decision to use micro usb when all the companies in the undustry have agreed to use mini usb.
Midway through the video, just after he puts in the battery (which looks to be a standard X1 BST-41 ) - he hits a switch on the side. I was originally going to ask if that might be a Hold switch like the ASUS phones have - but I realize now its actually just a battery case lock - oh well.
Can't say I like the reduction of the buttons, makes for less customization, the micro-usb means I need to get mini-micro adapters (90% of all usb non-USB-A devices I've owned since 2002 have had Mini-USB plugs). Flat screen is nice though, being a little bigger can't hurt. Nice camera, but lower frame-rate on VGA recording like the X1a now for all editions? Mostly same specs though and no idea what software it will break... makes me with hold judgment on whether I'd ever buy it though. That and the fact I have a brand new X1 to play with in my hand right now .
Peter
P.S. Just saw your reply above me orelsi, I wish Mini-USB were the standard but I keep reading that it's now micro-usb - I'd be happy if you can prove me wrong on this Ref: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2341261,00.asp
