S8 Not detected by Windows - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
I bought an immaculate looking, roughly 2 year old, Samsung S8 recently and all works fine, except, no matter how hard I try, I connect get windows 10 and now windows 11 to detect the phone, so I can download photos off it. It charges, but it does not appear in "This PC" as a drive. Previous owners gave me a blank look when I mentioned it. They are not PC savy. Maybe they never tried to do this...dunno. Anyway I thought I could fix it.....I WANT to fix it.
I've updated the OS and USB drivers, enabled developer mode, tried different usb ports, different PC's , different usb cables and yesterday I fitted a new USB daughter board...still no worky......
I can't even remember all the things I've tried...
I have now bought a new S10 and that all works as it should. S8 still doesn't work.
I am out of ideas.....All I can think of to do now is to replace the motherboard! Extreme, and I don't even know if it will fix it......
How can it not?....lol
I know it doesn't make sense to spend too much on a S8 but it just irks me!
I hope someone can enlighten me....

Not the usual PC connection issue

Hi!
Ive got a big problem cause my Galaxy S just stopped being recognized by any PC. I dont know whats wrong, it just treats USB cable like it was a charger, PC doesnt detect anything neither does the phone. Its very strange since everything worked perfect for the last couple of weeks. I tried to connect it to a notebook i used to flash the phone a week ago and it has been turned off ever since so it cant be any driver related issue. Im afraid my micro-USB port is damaged but i have a custom firmware in it and since i cant reflash it the warranty isnt vaild ehh...
Any ideas?
THX
silly question...
Do you mount the phone via the status bar after you plug it in?
Thats the point - PC doesnt detect the phone AT ALL theres not even a sound that an USB device has been plugged in. The same thing in the phone it just starts charing it doesnt seem to know that its connnected to PC.
sounds like your PC mobo got the USB port fried.
try turning off the PC, unplug the power cord, wait for the energy to drain out, then turning it back on
my Windows 7 x64 some time does that, but it's not a hardware error
on yours it could either be a hardware dead, or the Windows gone Bezerk as usual
I tried different USB devices - other phones, pendrives and a printer and everything works fine except for the Galaxy S. The Samsungs USB cable also works fine with other phones..
I wrote to Samsung and they said to send them the device because its most probably damaged :\ Will they check the firmware version?
btw. as I said in the first post the phone doesnt work on my notebook as well
I wouldnt care so much about this because I can send files using ftp but I cant change the firmware without an USB port working (or am I wrong?)
I sometimes also have this problem. For me rebooting the phone and if it then doesn't work again using another USB port at my PC solves the problem.
Yesterday when the problem occurred for the first time I removed SIM and microSD cards and PC detected a device but it was recognized as 'unknown malfunctioning USB device' but no luck ever since.
Just to let you know my Samsung just fixed itself 0_o Might have something to do with the Windows reinstallation on my PC but it suddely works on my notebook as well. Im really confused now...

If your having problems getting the 10.1 recognised by a PC

Hi Guys
I recently acquired one of the 10.1 LE's and immediately ran into problems with my PC refusing to recognize the Tab. I searched high and low for a solution, including installing Kies, the USB drivers and ever other mad trick people suggested, but nothing worked.
What made this even worse was the Tab would charge while plugged into the PC, so the cable must have been working... well that assumption was wrong, read on.
I live in the UK and the Tab 10.1 is not available here yet, but I realised the 7" Tab appeared to have the same charger and usb cable, so I took a chance and purchased one of these, suddenly everything started working and my PC picks up the tab.
So the moral of the story is, if your does not work neither, try a different cable
What do to when one only has one cable. Where might I get another? Have tried to connect to two different computers already. Tab give notification but no reaction from computers. Kies will not transfer videos. Will contact Samsung support.
Have already downloaded device usb drivers from Samsung. Let Kies look for drivers but no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Tab showed connect one time, but pc wouldn't react. Window 7 64-bit and XP service pack 3.
Turn off USB Debugging!!!!! You're computer will not recognize your device if debugging is on. Turn it off.

Cant connect samsung S1 to PC

Hi,
I'm having a real though time trying to connect my galaxy s1 to a pc. Have tried everything, like kies, direct connection, reseted the device, and no joy.
When I plug the cable it makes that sound as it is connecting but it doesn't show in the PC anywhere, nor even in Device manager.
It can get pwr from the usb cable when is connected; already tried with another cable and same thing.
My final goal is to unlock it.
thanks for any help
have you tried put yoy're phone in depurating mode?
I guess yo mean Debugging mode, as I couldn't found Depurating anywhere. Have selected it and the same effect
HI
I had the same problem after getting nowhere with it, for some reason and I don"t know why, I put it in download mode and then connected it to odin and my PC found it I then disconected it and its been fine eversince.

#Samsung Kies always makes problems on Windows x64 !
##I would recommend, if you got 32-Bit Computer, to use that ;-)
#If you Want just flash over Odin, then is this driver package enough

#The Package is also enough for If you want just to connect to mass Storage (Phone's SD Card)
Don't Forget to Thanks, if it was useful for you!

Hi there.
By direct connection you mean the USB Mass Storage mode, right?
It might be some weird, random problem with the samsung system drivers. I used to have such problems about two years ago, back in the days of Froyo. Have you tried re-installing them? There was a link to proper drivers file in one ICS installation tutorial, and those drivers can be downloaded here. If you go about trying this method, lemme know if it worked.
Cheers.
PS: Unlike diklooc there suggested, do not never EVER go back to x86 OS. That's the worst advice. Kapisch?
Did you check your usb port in System ?
Sometimes it stuck with another lastest device
Hi,
have tried everything, and finally only in a WinXP32 could be abble to get the error shown on the file atached.
But nothing (warnings) come up in Device Manager
Unninstalled everything (kies) and tried to install only the driver and nothing happens.
Should I try to mount it on a linux?
or is it dead?
thanks
i have this problem too
wat chan I do???
my sgs can not connect to my PC
This may help...
Hi there - I don't have the same phone as you, but I did encounter the exact same problem. I've been searching around and it looks like the most common fix was to simply replace the cable. I don't know what kind of cable you have, but my phone (a Samsung Focus i917) uses a mini-usb connector. I found that my Amazon Kindle used the same connector.
When I was using the Samsung cable, I'd get intermittent connects and charge power. The OS would report unknown device. When I switched computer's = same result. I switched to my Kindle cable and the computer instantly recognized the device and installed the drivers. After 12 hours of troubleshooting, factory resetting my phone (blah - lost everything) it turned out to be the cable. I know that this isn't an easy troubleshooting step for most people, because who has an extra cable? I just got lucky that my Kindle uses the same connector. I'm now suspecting (due to the prevalence of this connectivity problem coming from people with Samsung phones - there are a LOT of reported issues) that there is probably a Samsung cable problem in general.
Good luck with your phone.
try
try select mass strong ...

Nasdriver, I currently have a similar problem but mine is related with Samsung Kies as I can't get either my older SGS1 or my newer Samsung Nexus to get recognized by Kies. I also suspected the cable thing and even read it could be a USB port issue but neither of them was my problem (I have 3 cables and 8 ports on 2 computers that result in the same thing). I can connect other devices with the same cables and they work, so I suspect my problem is focused around the Samsung device drivers.
My advice is if you can go in a systematic manner, first focus on the cable (easiest to replace), if you get the same results with a new cable, then focus on the USB physical port, clean it with some Isopropyl alcohol, if the port works for other devices (camera, other phones, etc..) on the same cable but not with the SGS, then try reinstalling the samsung device drivers.
Oh, and if you want to unlock your phone, the EASY way is to download the Galaxy S Unlock application from the Android market (no affiliation) it's free (but the developer does accept donations) and it WORKS. I won't bore you with my 3 week journey trying to unlock my Bell SGS phone here in Canada, had I found this app first I would have done it in less then 2 min saved myself a LOT of frustration.
Good luck

My Galaxy S4 won't stay connected to the computer via USB

Hey all. Just got my Galaxy S4 today and I was loving everything about it until... right now. For some reason, the darn USB won't stay connected to the computer. It doesn't matter if it's simply plugged into the computer as an "installer" or as a media device. It'll constantly disconnect and reconnect itself, even when I'm not transferring any files.
It's not the my computer/USB ports, either, since I can transfer files between my HTC Thunderbolt and Nexus 7 fine. I've also tested 2 other USB cables and they all behave the same way.
Anyone know what's going on? Did I get a lemon?
No im in the same boat. Was trying ti connect in today. I reinstalled and un installed the drivers about 4 times. Tried un selecting usb debugging in developers menu. Installed kies and used the drivers from it still no good. Used 3 different usb leads. Phone will still charge from pc and even when im installing the drivers again and connect the phone it will say that your new device is ready to use but still cant access phone, it simply does not show up.
Wouldn mind was working 2 days ago fine. Same usb port and all. And the port is fine cause my old s3 still reads from the same port.

same problem with me!
every thing ok with s3 but the problem only with s4
please we need help to solve this problem!
Same problem
I have also been dealing with this for a while now. I have Windows 7 64bit and I have reinstalled the drivers many times through Kies and manually. It seems like the problem is getting worse since initially I could do some file transfer through usb if i fiddled with the device (changing usb ports, unplugging it, etc). Now I am hard pressed to get it to show up on the computer through MTP at all.
This is quite annoying since I am developing an android app and I need a usb connection in order to test it. A fix would be awesome.
I just tested on my sister's laptop and it doesn't have this problem. I clicked around the phone, transferred a 10gb movie, and left it plugged in to see if there were any signs of disconnects. None whatsoever. Odd. Maybe Galaxy S4 just doesn't like something with our computers. This is quite annoying.
I have a fresh Windows 7 64-bit partition I installed the other day so I'll test it out on that and report the results later today.

im on xp(retro yeah ha ha) but just a pc i have for my phones and stuff. But i got it working again by flashing my firmware through odin and its back working. Im blaming when i rooted it that it broke but ill see if it happens again
edit: Can confirm pc is now picking up phone. I just flashed the most recent stock rom for my carrier through odin and as soon as it finished updating its prefect now. Might wait another while to root it now and wait for more devs to jump aboard for more roms

Hi
I don't know if it may help but i noticed the usb doesn't work when the phone is locked.
I did check 'stay active while charging' in dev parameters and i never got disconnected again.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Tested it out on a fresh copy of Windows 7 and it still continuously disconnect. What gives?

Oops, missed your post. Unfortunately, it disconnects regardless of the phone's state.
My friend's S4 was doing the same thing on his desktop. Every time he would try to transfer pics the phone would disconnect after a few files.
I tried different things from reinstalling drivers to trying to only copy over a couple of files at a time, nothing worked.
Finally I plugged his phone into one of the back usb ports and transferred over 2gb with no problem and no disconnects since.
My guess is the S4 is a power hog and some usb ports just don't supply enough juice. Try plugging it in to a usb port that comes off a motherboard. Don't use the front ports or usb hubs. Hope this helps someone.

I've been trying all kinds of different combinations of USB leads, phone settings and ports all morning and was just about getting ready to start a new Olympic sport of S4 hurling when I came across this post and plugged my USB straight into the back of my machine and it finally works!! Thank you dirrtpoor for your input - a simple fix, but nevertheless it worked.:good:
I suppose it makes sense that a quad core 1.9Ghz phone would be a power hog.
It wouldn't work on my home PC whatever I tried. Front or back USB ports.
On my dads PC sometimes it would display OK and other times "usb device has malfunctioned" (didn't try the rear USB port)
On my work PC it works fine on the rear ports.
I was having the same problem a few days ago, but then I reformatted the SD card, now everything seems OK.
Even the stock gallery app works now...?!
Guys I was having the same problem. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why suddenly my S4 wasn't being recognized by my computer. I finally went into developer options and noticed a "USB Debugging - Debugging mode launches when USB is connected" was turned on. I de-selected that, connected my phone and now my computer recognizes it again. I hope that helps guys, it helped me.

This may be laughably obvious but I'm a former Apple user, which has it's own dedicated USB connector, so I forget sometimes with the Samsung S4, which has a standard (looking) micro USB connector that I need a USB cable that is enabled for syncing as well as charging...not all USB cords with micro connectors on the phone end will carry the data because I imagine Samsung has made their phone's connector require a different wiring in the cable.
I was pulling my hair out yesterday trying to figure out why the computer wouldn't see the phone..then looked at the USB cable and realized I'd plugged a non-syncing cable in. I tried the cable that came with the phone and bingo, worked like it was supposed to.
Hope this helps, sometimes it's the little things we overlook that drive us nuts.
Any way to connect in master storage with out root.

Use a different usb cable and usb port. I know it sounds stupid but there has definitely been phantom problems which were solved this way, even with something as simple as adb commands
i have same problem. trying all the way but always with the same result...

S8 Not detected by Windows

Hi,
I bought an immaculate looking, roughly 2 year old, Samsung S8 recently and all works fine, except, no matter how hard I try, I connect get windows 10 and now windows 11 to detect the phone, so I can download photos off it.
I hope someone can enlighen me....

If you're using the newest drivers,it won't work.I experienced this as well with my Note 8,and had to roll back to previous driver versions to get it to connect.
Thanks.....I am not sure what versions I have tried now. I would have thought the first attempt would have been on the older driver, and then I updated. Maybe I need to try again. Try some older versions.

Give this a try. Some have had fairly good luck with it since it has old and newer versions of the driver with it.
I tried the Smart Switch version you posted. no dice.
I DID have have a small amount of luck....I did realise that I don't have the MTP option in Developer Options> Default USB configuration, like all the videos show. ( This is disturbing....why? )
I tried 'transferring images' option , re-booted phone and now I'm getting the windows 'ding' and the 'usb device not recognised' error, so thats progress...lol
After that I re-installed the older samsung usb drivers on my pc with no change....same error.
I've found about 8 older drivers, but have only tried 3. I gets a bit painful blindly installing, uninstalling, installing....
Not having the MTP option seems to me. to be the key, but I don't know how to fix it. Did Samsung remove the option in an update?...dunno
