[SOLVED] Advice: replace battery or buy new phone - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Hey fellas
Today I was videoconferencing with my mom through WhatsApp, when suddenly my Moto G4 Play shutdown whilst around like 9% battery. I've been suspicious its battery has been worn for some time now. My needs are super basic: WhatsApp, Google Maps, bank app, buy cinema tickets, read e-mails and very rarely take photos (the camera is good, but seems to get worse every once in a while!). Stock Android BTW, I see no need to flash any ROM or root so far, perhaps to remove annoying operator popups but they are unusual. Replacement batteries seem very cheap, below R$ 100 whilst a new smartphone is R$ 1000 >. Also, I can choose myself a new smartphone, no worries. Should I replace its battery and keep using it or should I buy a new smartphone?

Welcome to XDA
If you like the phone, replace the battery. A battery's usable lifespan is 1-3 years depending on how it's used.

Thanks!
It's settled then, perhaps I should really just replace the battery, it's a small cost if I ever repent and decide to buy something new. Should I mark this as [SOLVED]?

If you wish. Nothing like a fresh new battery...

MESSAGE to HTC, Tmobile, Android and Google

There is a problem with our battery life and we all know its true... I have even been given a new battery and HTC mains charger
I turn off any service im not using at the time (ie: wifi, BT, GPS, NETGPS,etc) not that I should have to do this, but lets story on track...
My battery will make about 1 day as I am A "power user" but if its not plugged in I wont have the juice for my alarm to wake me up, my wifes Sony Ericsson lasts 4-5 days per charge, but lets not compare apples and oranges, the whi-phone 3g my sister has sahe bought it about the same times as my g1, she hadn't ever heard of "deep cycling" 2-5 times when you get a new phone, she never lets it discharge fully and just tops off all the time, AFAIK she is treating a NIMH cell exactly the wrong way, BUT SHE GETS 1-3 DAYS depending on the type of use, and never turns off ANY of the 3g, gps, net gps, wifi, BT nada and Id say she uses hers alot because its her primary camera, GPS & A/V player
my question is WHY?
Im sure there must be somebody involved with the development of this phone/OS that reads thru here, since there is more exciting stuff coming from XDA than there is the market...
Im gonna add a poll that pertains to battery use...
I wanted to add one very negative one but hit submit not preview, maybe just post and dont vote if none apply..
they better come off a new battery almost all other new phones will get 1-2 day + average use, Ive had phones that could go 3-4. but the state of the art G1 mindblowing innovative phone wont even work a whole day, so what if its bigger than the whi-phone, it has no keyboard.
I for one would like to hear some solid info on a replacement battery and back, for new and existing G1 users, early adopters got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on the HTC->headphone jack adapter I got the headphones with the htc angled adapter from fleabay, so many manufactures stick it to the early adopter, when we are the ones that get the word of mouth going, as people go "WOW that thing is cool!,what is it?! they know when we bought out phones and should be able to figure out when the head phone rev change was made, so send them to the first of the buyers....
IF the battery issue isnt fixed, alot of people will be very angry and the g1 will flop.
I think the bad press is starting to out weigh the good press the G1 and possibly android as a whole is at a crossroad. If the g1 tanks Android will be stained forever...thankfully enuff I dont think XDA-DEV would give up on this badboy, I love this thing, and I love it for what it can be

Well stated sir.
HTC/Google need to fix battery problems in G1. Maybe it's soft bug, but maybe it's a hardware bug - Nobody knows
I dunno. With normal use, I get about 12 hours or more from my stock battery. That's about the same as other HTC phones I've had.
there is a battery issue and we are al aware of it.
i have managed to have it last through out the day
just set the brightness to the lowest possible, sleep time to 15 secs
turn off data and wifi and anything else that you are not using
its not how the phone was intended to be used, but it's what i ave to do for now
I find it fine for everyday use. Of course I haven't done a full test but maybe tomorrow I will.
I would like to use my G1 like I use my WinMo but no way I can with the battery.

I think you're exaggerating here a little bit. The battery life, while it got press at first, has faded from the limelight of android news for the general population. The G1 is already far from a flop and I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden mass return of all the handsets sold.
Let’s face it living on the cutting edge means you will get cut sometimes. Your high expectations will not always be met and manufacturers will frequently not care. The battery life is less than what many people expected, but we’ve learned to deal with it. At least we have options (power management, backup batteries, and expanded capacity batteries), but I’d not hold my breath on HTC making any major moves. How long has the issue been going with the TYTN II drivers anyway?

I have no idea what kind of use gets 1-3 days, but it certainly isn't 3G web browsing. Most iPhone 3G battery life tests clock 3G data use at about 3-5 hours. Based on my own usage of a friend's iPhone 3G, that seems to be about right. Coincidentally my G1 gets about 3-5 hours of 3G data use as well.
Frankly, from an engineer's point of view I have not seen any power drain tests conducted with enough rigor and variable control to be worthy of being called a truly scientific analysis. Even the best "battery life tests" out there aren't declaring what type of testing environment (los and distance to closest 3G tower), what background apps are installed, ambient temperature (which affects the battery discharge profile), etc. Without considering and removing these variables from the test, deviation could be as high as... well there's no fixing the percentage really. It's all just junk data.
I do notice after I installed Task Manager, to close out programs I am not using my battery life went up. There are a lot of un needed start up apps.

Yep my friend has iphone and we did test last weekend, both went 3 hours and change then died. If i dont use internet and set timeout and brightness down plus use task manager mine will go as long as my dash. I personally dont care about the battery life, i have a computer, home charger and car charger and i drive for a living so if it gets low no biggie. In my opinion i dont see android going anywhere and i love the g1. Just like wm its gonna take time to get off the ground. To say its at a crossroads is ridiculous.
I am using ADP1.1 and yea if I am browsing the net with 3G for 3-5 hours straight I start seeing the battery go down. But from 100% to 0% takes me longer than 5 hours. I know because I like to lay in bed and don't care to come check my messages LOL
I bought a G1 last week and so far I have been really dissapointed. After having an elf and seeing other htc phones I was expecting big things from the G1.
I am now a week into ownership and after 5 full charge - discharge cycles I am managing to get 24 hours out of the phone with next to no use what so ever. If i check my emails and do 30 mins browsing the phone is dead in 6 or less.
The hardware is simply put 'very poor' my screen is wobbly and the back is loose, all this after just a week.
As for android, it is fantastic everything I expected (except hotmail support) and there is no way it is going to flop. Its just a shame that google and htc didn't wait until they had the right phone for the job.
Thats just my 10p worth!!

It all depends on what you have installed. for me the start up is. I beleve amazon does too, but I uninstalled that. But the first thing I do is go into task manager and kill everything. And only like two things auto start up. I really with HTC built in a x-button app for android. I loved the click x for close.

Under light usage I get about 36 hours from full charge to shutdown. That's GPS on, Bluetooth on, Autosync on, periodically doing e-mail and web browsing.
Under heavy usage (Which is basically I listened to MP3s for 2 hours) it goes at least 17 hours before I plug it back in. I haven't tested but I'd bet it could go 20 or more.
That's as good as (or better) than I was getting on the Wizard/MDA.
I dunno if anyone has stated it but the problem with the battery has to do with the phone recieving the cell signal. For some reason the phone runs in overload when searching for a cell signal...I noticed this one day when T-Mo suspended my service and my battery meter never moved all day, I think by night it was down to 85-90%...sure enough that night when I paid my bill and the phone started picking up signal again, the battery depleted at "normal" speed.

Why do i keep hearing that there is no hotmail support? Android (and G1) works with hotmail just fine! Just go to the Email program and set it up. WHY!! .. I am having connection errors sometimes though..
Battery is a big issue. Never had any luck with it.. EVER.. just unplugged it and after about 1+ hour it's down to 66%. Played a game (slide puzzle) watched 2 youtube vids of about 3 minutes each. And I had it fully drained and recharged a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't even took 10 minutes to drop from 100% to 89%.. But I was on wifi.. Maybe this is normal.
Software has a lot to do with this I think. Yesterday I had about 50-60% left. Did something, can't remember what, opening programs or music. And closed it. After 5 minutes I checked and battery was hot and had drained to orange level. I checked with task manager and only calendar/messaging/tunewiki/music was on. I closed all and restarted the phone, cuz it was still hot. Luckily it lasted a few hours till I got home, with very carefull use..

Battery Issues

Hey guys, i've had my PPC 6800 (bell) for about slightly over a year now.
Recently i've noticed that the battery is dying instantly every time i make a call or access the internet. It can go from 90% down to 6% in a matter of seconds. I've tried differnt firmwares and nothing helps at all. Anyone got any ideas? Is my phone kicking the can..? or is it my battery?
Thanks for the help
I would say it's the battery. I had same thing after about a year too. Mine would go down even if I wasn't using the phone. I thought it was the phone's fault so I called Verizon and they sent me a new phone. But battery acted the same. So I bought another battery. All is fine now!
it could also be a problem with the phone. Does it get really hot during the drain periods. I had on that did and it was just defective.
hmm well it acts normally when i'm just using the GUI (aka just playing games etc), however everytime i access data or call, the battery dies in several minutes. I'm gonna try upgrading the battery i guess, its a shame they're just so expensive
You can get oem ones cheap on ebay. Or even the cheaper chinese ones
Could ya tell me if this battery would be compatable?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25024
Or could you recommend any other sites/links to get a cheap batt from?
thanks again
It would work and it is the same as the cheap extended ones on ebay. The battery is of great quality but it should last. I look at the cheap ones this way. I can buy at least 3 of them for the price of a name brand one. This allows me to buy them if they fail cheap.

Extended Battery - Need advice

Hi guyz
I need your suggestion in buying an extended battery for my tilt, since I have been able to acquire one. I am a heavy user of pocket pc so may require a high capacity battery. Do you have any suggestions? I dont want a spurious product which could damage the phone. I got few ones on ebay, can you plz help me, here are few offers I found on ebay

Bump...I am looking for some suggestions.
I'd go for first link as using a 2700 purchased about 9 months ago well lasts about 2 days with me using wi-fi HSDPA etc
Here is a picture to show my battery as only way i could compare was by image.
The only prob i have had is the GPS gromit thing always fell off so now leave it off...
Thanks Luke, indeed very helpful, LOL I should have asked you otherwise. I forget you keeping so much on kaiser. BTW what is the daily use, I mean I want to use it as walkman, how much is the weightage of this use would be great.
Happy diwali to you & all back home. Stay blessed, have fun. Cheers
That's cool Sunny,
I use as .mp3 player, Wi-Fi "minimal", HSDPA and get average 2 days has lasted longer but just depends on how much i can leave it sat without play
Extended battery only adds another 1cm to base to which is really not noticable as Kasier already a brick
Happy diwali to you & yours
Peace.
Hello, I tried an extended battery bought on Ebay. It's great. It changed my life I can use my phone for a whole day without worrying about battery. The phone became very thick and heavy but tranquillity worth it.
Don't worry about damaging your phone. The main risk is that battery won't last as long as expected. Very few of them don't have integrated control chip but most of batteries works as well as original one. I bought 5 batteries on Ebay for different products and received bad battery only once: it lasted 3 times less than expected.
If you want to maximize your chances of getting good product, check seller rating and comments.
Thanks for your views Arpax, really appreciated, but could you plz point me towards the product which satisfy you, I would not like to send that back in case of any defect. Kindly suggest me something specific, let me know about above links as well.
One option to consider is to have two batteries-I always keep one in and one extra charged in my bag. That way I know I always have 2+ days worth of battery life with me with no need for an extra-fat phone or questionable battery.

HELP - Battery replacement

Hi
My 5X died (LG Spain told me that they don't want to repair it using the warranty, because they found this inside, I've never wet the phone..also started bull****ing about the screen, screen was perfectly fine, and recovery, i was able to enter recovery, just wasn't able to boot the phone or use it without a reboot after a few minutes...)
Anyway,
Now I'm getting a used 6P at a good price today.
The issue is the battery, apparently is in bad shape......like 74% left with 30 SoT (mainly Whatsapp), 4 hours standby, and some Spotify..(I'm not the user, but I got this info today).
So I'm planning to change the battery next week if I get this 6P.
I've already saw this video, and it's difficult mainly because of the glue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEQbQPAU9Ss
Do you have any good link to buy the battery in Europe? Some good eBay vendor..or something like that? I'd like to have good unused battery!
Thanks

Hello... Check this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/accessories/oem-battery-t3534410
People discuss about OEM battery replacement and where they bought it.
For a guide to change it, there's also discussions either on XDA or the interweb...
Good luck... :good:

Yeah... You just need the proper how-to, the proper tools, patience.
Take your time and be gentle with the thin parts. You may buy a new back cover and lens protector (not sure).
Anyway, those who did it certainly know better than i on this matter...

The good part is that, you don't have to deal with "side locks" (I think) and the side buttons seem to not be affected by the process. (I've replaced a Galaxy Nexus display in the past, and the volume buttons never were the same. Also opened a Nexus 5 to change battery; and the low part of the back ended up a bit loose, probably because of the side locks. Here, at least, we have screws in the cover...the most difficult part is the removal of the glass and the bottom aluminium, but at least there are no side locks, just glue....
(I'm planning to use a hair dryers, and then just get the other tools).
Anyway...first I'm gonna try it with the current battery for a week. but seems to have a bad battery (maybe 20% worse than a regular 5X). I understand that a 6P has more life than the 5X, so that's what I'm aiming after a replacement...
I've been using an iPhone 5S for a week....amazing compass (compared to all the nexus I had), but the rest..... I don't like it (specially the screen size). If I have to open a LINK in Chrome, login into airport wifi, multitask or basically write a big paragraph....i want to kill myself.
So I'm in a hurry right now...

At the end I've replaced my battery (used a "Cameron Sino X-Longer" one as replacement, it's more expensive than the others, but seems to worth the price).
- No more shutdowns before reaching 1% battery left.
- More than 100% increase in battery life. Now I'm having 4-4:30 hours+ SoT and all day standby. With everything enabled, trusted voice, trusted places, etc. (except NFC and bluetooth).

Nice... This is the average SOT you get when the phone is brand new. I use my devices mostly on WiFi without GPS. Also trusted voice/places disabled. So I usually got between 5h30 and 6h30 with average usage (web, YouTube, SMS/MMS, XDA Labs)
I've switched to another model now. But the N6P is a great device nonetheless. Enjoy your new phone..! :good:
Cheers...

Sent from my Nexus 6P
Got one the Cameron sino for the Huawei 6p on eBay for 25.00. working like a champ.

battery.

it has been months now having to deal with this issue.
i really love my 6p but I've got tired of having to charge my phone every three hours. it shuts down when recording video when the battery below 50% or giving the CPU a hard task like searching a long excel sheet. i cant open Snapchat when below 50% fearing that it will shutdown and its not may or may not it will shutdown .
i don't think its a hardware failure because when it happens twrp boots up just fine but cant mount data and it shows the real percentage. while ROM shows 1% and shutdown. it happens with all ROMs even the stock ones.
I live in a country where there is no support from google or any hardware store ( they don't even know the name of the phone ).
this issue have put me in many awkward moments I've waited for a long time towards a solution maybe that's it. and it is time to move on ??.
Its a hardware fault, as in as much as your battery needs replacing. Well known issue where the battery degrades causing this issue.
You could install Accubattery and do a health check to conform this.

I installed a new battery and used battery calibration from the play store. It's working like new again.
I just got my new 6p battery. I can confirm that I just get 1hr of screen on time and it will shutdown. I live in asia and There is no stock of the 6p's battery everywhere here even in Huawei stores and service centers. I got mine from an online site and have it shipped to me. It took a while but it was worth it. Its like new again (bought this device 2nd hand and already have the degraded battery).

I've never heard that one. But I've heard I've had to be careful with sino as most are fakes now. But I've also heard good ones about Cameron sino x longer? Or something.
Very much would appreciate your advice on this as I don't want to pay for a fake. As I plan to get a new charger, battery, screen protector and case for it. But with the battery as it is now. Wouldn't be worth it

I suggest Beltron like mine, most of the batteries doesnt have any temp sensor. It doesnt bother me that much. I suggest using a 1A charger. Slow charging but it doesnt stress the battery so much like the OEM charger. My wild guess is that the charger is the reason why the battery degrades so fast. Good luck with your 6p!

But, So far no issues. 1hr 45mins SOT and i still have 70% (Fb, YT, Web browsing, instagram and etc). Today is my first day of using this battery. Fingers crossed.

Agree... but what does Accubattery say your battery capacity is? 1st day feel of the pants is feedback, but having data would be better. Run the app, and after a few full charges let us know how this battery compares to the one it replaced. You *may* have found a great replacement. Thanks.

Ill download the app again. I always forget using that app. Last night i charged it 30%-100% in just more or less 3hrs using 1A charger. i was asleep that time. Today I'm using the phone non stop. Off wifi and off cellular since i have a dedicated daily driver for my social life using this device just for entertainment. Today I've been reading manga using an app non stop @ 50% brightness. Here are the screen shots of my battery in settings. I think its good. Ill return with accubattery data later
Any links for recommended battery instructions?

it has been months now having to deal with this issue.
i really love my 6p but I've got tired of having to charge my phone every three hours. it shuts down when recording video when the battery below 50% or giving the CPU a hard task like searching a long excel sheet. i cant open Snapchat when below 50% fearing that it will shutdown and its not may or may not it will shutdown .
i don't think its a hardware failure because when it happens twrp boots up just fine but cant mount data and it shows the real percentage. while ROM shows 1% and shutdown. it happens with all ROMs even the stock ones.
I live in a country where there is no support from google or any hardware store ( they don't even know the name of the phone ).
this issue have put me in many awkward moments I've waited for a long time towards a solution maybe that's it. and it is time to move on .

My wife had the same problems and got a Pixel.
I ordered a new battery for around $20, put it in and now it's like a new phone. I swapped out the Sim card from my Moto z and now it's my daily driver. By the end of my shift it's still at 80%
I bought a brand new Nexus 6P and have had it for a month now and I must say, coming from the LG G5, its a damn shame the 6P's battery doesn't live up to the potential some phone batteries do. I would recommend doing a health check for your battery once a month at least, it's what I do to keep an eye on things. There are some good apps for monitoring your usage and longevity quite accurately.
Nevertheless I still prefer my 6P to the G5 :silly:
If your want an OEM battery here is one https://goo.gl/jmYfn9 the seller runs out but seems to get more in. I bought this one and had five and a half hours screen on time when I plugged in at 8% battery left. Mine was shutting down as soon as it hit 20%

I have to object to the that factor that the battery on the 6p doesn't live up to its potential, well I'm making a statement out out of that comment, I bought an replaced my own battery, even went as far as adding new thermal paste in the places required, I also have my device rooted an pretty much battery mod central on my device, I have had it for 5 days on deep doze settings an it's at 68%. I had insured my journey with complete overall satisfaction, I have added a 3600 an it came 2 days after I Ordered off Amazon, for 15$ free shipping, can't beat the fact is the way a device should run, no just a nexus 6p, I mean ll devices, if you can oot it when your phone is new, you can max your battery potential to the extreme, if you've had the device like me for 3+ years, every battery saving option I went through trial and error Makin that thing last for 3 hours if it was rooted with doze settings and lasted an hour max if not rooted. So I went the do it youself an learn something an it wasn't hard one bit. Charged It till full an turned it on an let it do its thing, I can't tell you how many of you need to change your battery out an buy a new phone. let's be clear an unrooted phone will never exceed battery life for the reasons of the hogwash they add o it an cause it to drain, if you eliminate the drag you'll get your full potential on battery life and only 15$ than forking out 500$ on a new device, work smarter not harder. Seeder, amplify, greenify, power nap, servicely, naptime, xposed, better battery stats, tasker, appcontext, powersving.apk, magisk doze mods, I recommend them all on magisk even if they are repoed, fix the prop for the present time if you know what your doing, Lspeed Is a great tool to have, I use elementalx an tweaked my settings for battery another great tool for battery conserving is [All+ROMs]+Galacticâ„¢+DeepSleep+MOD+[Super+Battery+Saver], find an flash it in recovery. For all devices.
If there are any questions on those apps or have any fed back let me know. Good luck.
